Editorial Reviews
Album Description
English-born singer Summer is in the same mould as Filippa Giordano & Izzy, with the same light, ethereal slant on the classics. A particular highlight is the stunning vocal arrangement of Beethoven's 'Moonlight Sonata' ('Mal Di Luna') but the whole album is awash with sentiment & atmosphere. 12 tracks. Sony Classical.

E ora? Questo brano è la copia sputata di Jaded. Ripigliatevi, cari Aerosmith, così proprio non va. Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare a breve? Un duetto con Britney Spears?

    5 out of 5 stars Great Single!!.......2003-09-20

'Girls Of Summer' is a great song, Steven Tylers Voice sounds great, Joe Perrys 12 string sounds awesome! Then you get 'Jaded' and you cant go wrong there, and 'Walk This Way' from their 97 tour how cool is that! Awsome single!

    Album Description

Import only two-disc coupling of his 1981 album 'If I Should Love Again' and his '96 album, Summer of '78. The latter is out-of-print in the US. Barry Manilow decided to follow the success of singing with the big bands with an album saluting another great lost era, The Summer of '78. Even on the newly-written title song, it's never quite clear why Manilow chose to single out the summer of 1978 out of the entire decade after all, the album is comprised of songs written throughout the '70s but the exact reason doesn't matter: as much as its predecessor, this is an exercise in nostalgia, pure and simple. Of course, it's very entertaining nostalgia, as Manilow has chosen soft-rock songs (Dan Hill's 'Sometimes When We Touch', Leo Sayer's 'When I Need You', Bob Seger's 'We've Got Tonight' that perfectly suit his style. The Summer of '78 is a perfectly executed and entertaining slice of nostalgia. BMG. 2006.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Barry's Beautiful Musik!.......2007-06-24

I do NOT have this digitally remastered version, but I DO have the 2 albums it is comprised of, and they are DROP DEAD GORGEOUS! I am playing "Summer of '78" as we speak, melting all over the keyboard from this incredibly romantic music, sooooo, I'll start with:

    SUMMER OF '78

Well, this recent aquisition is my 41st Manilow CD (a hair less if you count them by actual albums, since some albums have more than one CD). This is a 12-track collection of absolutely beautiful songs that Barry is not famous for. God, I LOVE his music!

This CD is all beautiful songs. They just make you wanna melt! They are songs from the '70s that Barry did an album of in 1996. Why "The Summer of '78"? I donno--must have been a special time for Mr. B. I think everybody remembers "Reminiscing," "Sometimes When We Touch," "Never My Love," "I Go Crazy," and "Just Remember I Love You". "I Go Crazy" and "Sometimes When We Touch" are just so very beautifully crafted by Barry. I guess they are my favorites on this CD, but I love them all.

"I'd Really Love To See You Tonight" is done differently than I'm used to. I have several club mix versions of this song, and as much as I love them, I love this version without the pizzaz too. Oh, you'll recognize "The Air That I Breathe" too. I recognize "Interlude: Love's Theme" from some TV show of the '70s but cannot remember which one. You know, dah, dah dah...dah, dah dah. Anyway, you'll recognize it when you hear it. Other songs include "Summer of '78" and "When I Need You," "Bluer Than Blue," and "We've Got Tonight".

Geeze. This is just one beautifully romantic drop-dead gorgeous album. Sorry it took me 11 years to discover it. Don't let it happen to you. Let the Manilonian in you come out and feel the love in this album. It's incredible! Took me just about 2 or 3 plays for this to become by favorite Manilow album. It moved the blue background "Barry Manilow" album you see in my reviews to my second favorite. I cannot stop playing "Summer of '78" -- NOR DO I WANT TO!!!

    IF I SHOULD LOVE AGAIN

Beautiful album! Great songs! 11 in all, at a total time a hair over 40 minutes. Some songs I had not heard before. Some I've only heard a few times.

"The Old Songs" and "Somewhere Down the Road" are Manilownian staples and beautiful songs. "Let's Hang On" is one of my favorites. It rocks and I'm really glad Barry recorded it. "If I Should Love Again" is another absolutely BEAUTIFUL song and appears on many Barry CDs. The piano bridge on this song is just awesome, in my opinion, and is crescendos so beautifully. These songs are all great; they are all the standard Manilow arrangements.

The less-frequently heard songs follow. "Don't Fall in Love With Me" has a nice little easy-listening cha-cha beat. (Don't fall in love with me. I'll only break your heart. For us, forever is just tomorrow. . .) "Break Down the Door" rocks. It has a nice driving beat. "No Other Love" has a very pretty melody with lots of feeling in the words (There was no other love but you--where did our love go--type song).

"Fools Get Lucky" is a slow song. (In other words, I am a fool, but got lucky anyway because I found you). "I Haven't Changed the Room" is also a pretty slow song. "Let's Take All Night (to say Goodbye)"--That says it all, a slow song--Let's take all night to say goodbye, `cause goodbye is hard to say. (H-m-m-m-m. After you spend all night saying goodbye, maybe you won't need to say goodbye, or want to. Heck, no. I'm stayin' now--But what do I know?). Pretty song, anyway. "You're Runnin" Too Hard" kind of a "bop" (You're partying too hard--slow down before you crash)

Great albums, especially if you want some of these less-heard songs. On a scale of 1 - 5, I would certainly give them at least a 5 or better, matter of fact, I'd probably give "Summer of `78" a 25! This collection is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Collection of House, Classic House & Vocal Trance.......2006-04-20

You can hardly go wrong with any of the Bargrooves CD - maybe the most consistently excellent series of house, classic house & vocal trance CD's - all tracks tasteful selected with slighly degrees of variations ... this CD has a bit more vocal trance than the others but still excellent throughout.

About the other thing missing on this one is kind of a shabby Cd artwork compared to the others but that's about the only thing wrong with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Some odd flip sides.......2007-06-03

The live cuts here are worth the listen. If you can't download them on the web, you may want to buy a copy of this.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live Van performances of late.......2003-07-19

While the title track is a great listen, rich with the subtleties that Van layers seemlessly, the real treat is the live performance of In the Afternoon/Raincheck. Not only is the playing fantastic, but Van's ability to take two relatively mediocre songs and combine them into a truly satisfying and exciting performance earns this album top marks.

4 out of 5 stars This EP is for die hard fans only.......2000-08-07

Theses tracks are closest to ELpH vs. Coil Worship The Glitch, which is a cool album, but is not like most things that Coil does, but then again Coil's music changes all of the time.

          5 out of 5 stars Positively Weird.......2000-07-05

As another of the "Seasons"-Series, this is probably the weirdest - and possibly the most potent of the four releases. Unfortunately, the track listing on the Amazon page is stightly erroneous, so I take the liberty of correcting:

          1. Bee Stings

          2. Glowworms/Waveforms

          3. Summer Substructures

          4. A Warning From The Sun (for Fritz)

This EP, with a running length of approx. 25 min, offers four different kinds of music in four songs that could not be more various in their respective styles: "Bee Stings" is almost conventional, a combination of electronics and beautiful strings, whilst "Glowworms/..." is close to ambient droning - which is not to say it is not highly interesting. Even more multilayered than aforementioned song is "Summer Substructures", that takes more than a bow towards Schoenberg. If Coil ever did a song that really deserved the label "sidereal", living up to both possible linguistic interpretations of the word, this is it. The last "tune" almost does not deserve this title, as it is a very chaotic, almost (but not quite) unlistenable collection of noise and shrieking vocals, making the listener more than just a little bit uneasy - which in itself shows it's brilliance: When was it the last time a song/tune/whatever really made you think whether you could stand it any longer? (and NO, I don't mean Dancefloor!)

          4 out of 5 stars Warming up........2000-03-15

This album has its strong moments, and its weak moments. Its strongest is "Glow Worm/Waveform", and Its weakest is "A Warning From The Sun"

This album has a very odd feel to it, and I am sure that it is intentional. The electronics of all match the time of year exceptionally well. Coil manages to pull it off indescribably well. Spring's electronics feel renewing, starting, and building up. Summers's feel hazy, warm, sharp, and almost bright. Autumn's feel retrospective, aged, mature, aware, ending. Winter's feel cold, seperate, transcendetal, almost like "afterlife". This is something only Coil could do without looking pretentious. The only greater example might be their "Angelic Conversation" soundtrack.

          5 out of 5 stars Summer Solstice.......2000-02-06

track listing (slighty corrected from above) is as follows :

          1. Bee Stings
          2. Glowworms/Waveforms
          3. Summer Substructures
          4. A Warning From The Sun (for Fritz)

second installment of the equinox solstice series, and probably my favorite. great vocal manipulation, great poetry, very creative sounds and music. this series is limited and has already been deleted, make sure you get them before they are gone.
