The Léner String Quartet has been almost forgotten, perhaps because their style of playing had been termed "old fashioned", when compared with the modern ensembles such as the Emerson and Juilliard String Quartets. Nevertheless, the employment of extreme vibrato was the style of playing known and approved by the romantic masters of the late 19th century. The reissue of the Léner recordings has been sparse during the LP and CD era even though they enjoyed one of the greatest and most important recording careers.
Commenced during the accoustic era, they re-recorded everything when electrical recordings became the norm. Among their many distinctions, they were the first ensemble to record the Beethoven String Quartets.

Back in "Iron Curtain" times it was by no means easy to hear Soviet-bloc artists in the U.S., and recordings really established international reputations over here. And based on available recordings it was generally conceded that the two great Czechoslovak string quartets were the Janacek and the Smetana, the former based in Moravia (Brno), the latter in Bohemia (Prague). The heyday of the Janacek Quartet was the 1950s and 1960s when these recordings were made for Deutsche Grammophon, British Decca and Westminster. About half were recorded in mono, the rest are stereo; but all are, technically speaking, very decently produced and wear their years lightly. Performance highlights for me are the Decca recordings of Dvorak and Haydn quartets; the DG recording of the Brahms piano quintet (with Eva Bernathova); and the stunning Westminster performance of the Mendelssohn Octet (where the Smetana Quartet joins in!). The great conductor Karl Bohm once declared that the Czech lands were the home of great string playing, and when you hear these recordings you sense the justness of that remark. These players produce an ineffable sweetness of sound that never cloys, and they phrase with an easy naturalness that, on every re-hearing, discloses new subtleties. No, this is not high-powered American string playing ala the Julliard Quartet; what the Janacek Quartet offers is a style and sound that is almost lost in today's internationalized musical performance world. Catch this set while you can; it's billed as a limited edition and many of the performances have been unavailable (in the U.S., at least) since the early 1960s. Space-saving soft box format and price are additional inducements, but these priceless recordings would be a bargain at twice the price DG is charging. Final note: no collection of the Janacek Quartet's work is complete without their stunning stereo recording of the two great quartets written by their namesake, currently available on a midprice Supraphon CD. Although an earlier, mono recording of the second Janacek quartet is included in the DG box, spend a little extra for the Supraphon CD just to get the Janacek Quartet's equally stunning performance of Janacek No. 1 ("Kreutzer Sonata" quartet). You won't regret the minor duplication, plus the Supraphon CD also includes a pleasant, "off the beaten path" quartet by 19th century Czech Romantic Vtislav Nowak as a substantial bonus. But for heaven's sake, don't hesitate to buy the DG collection right now!

Nadia Reisenberg (1904-1983), who studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, emigrated to the United States where she became a pupil of Alexander Lambert (a Liszt student) and Josef Hofmann. Her career as teacher and virtuosa spanned over 60 years. During her years at Juilliard, she produced many fine artists. She was a gifted performer with rare sensitivity and musical elegance. Nadia playing was exquisite , arresting and flamboyant . Her style belonged to an ancient tradition that simply does not exist in these days .
Musicality , honesty , are the last consequences of a deep insight in the soul of the composer . In her hands , Haydn sounds so convincing , that nobody in this moment (with the gloroius exception of Andras Schiff) can play with such pureness and rapture .

This is piano playing at its finest. Tone color, voicing, clarity are impeccable. Played with fire and conviction although in a totally idiomatic, classical fashion. This is not the 'prettified' playing of many pianists of this generation but full-bodied, dramatic, musicianly straightforward interpertations of some familiar as well as not so well known pieces. Mme Reisenberg was a musician's musician. I wish some of her other releases (Chopin, Kabalevsky, Rachmaniov) from this period would be re-released.

It was through the Weller Quartet that I came to love the Brahms Op. 51 quartets during music school years ago. Theirs are very warm and loving performances in a style of playing that one finds less of now. The quartet's history tells you much of what to expect--all of the players were from the Vienna Philharmonic, and were the sons of professional musicians. Their sense of ensemble is first rate, and their sound is warm, even lush at times, though with reserve.

Walter Weller's comments say much about their interpretive stance: "nothing should be exaggerated--too much of any dynamic does not make any musical sense"..."always floating, never hard or sharp." Indeed, to me, their Brahms was like a warm bath...not to say that it was lacking in passion, but there was nothing fierce or overly aggressive about it.

Listening to the other performances in this box (some of which I'd heard, some not) provided a similar pleasure. The Wellers' approach harkens back to the traditions from which it came; very solid music making, impeccable ensemble, warm sound, and, while not lacking in energy or excitement, overall somewhat conservative.

This is not to say I don't enjoy some of the great quartets of our day: The Emersons, Leipzig, Takacs. In fact, it is probably fair to say that the latter 2 in particular descend, to some extent, from the Weller-type tradition.

But I would urge those seriously interested in chamber music to invest in this box, for the pleasure of hearing a somewhat different approach, and, definitely, for the pleasure of a number of hours of fine music making. The recorded sound is first rate for Decca in the 60's.

        The Haydn and Mozart quartets are the only live performances ever published by this celebrated ensemble, which made many recordings in the early 1950s. They are even more intense and vital than the group's studio recordings, full of drive and power, but never going outside the bounds of the classical style. The HSQ also does full justice to the wonderful quartet by Mozart's favorite pupil, Hummel, in what still seems to be its only recording since before World War II.             The Léner String Quartet has been almost forgotten, perhaps because their style of playing had been termed "old fashioned", when compared with the modern ensembles such as the Emerson and Juilliard String Quartets. Nevertheless, the employment of extreme vibrato was the style of playing known and approved by the romantic masters of the late 19th century. The reissue of the Léner recordings has been sparse during the LP and CD era even though they enjoyed one of the greatest and most important recording careers.
            Commenced during the accoustic era, they re-recorded everything when electrical recordings became the norm. Among their many distinctions, they were the first ensemble to record the Beethoven String Quartets.
