Amazing.......2006-12-20
When I first got this c.d. I was not a big fan of it. I listened to it once and put it away. What a mistake that was. This is one of the best metal albums that I have heard. Best tracks are... all of them. This is pretty close to a masterpiece. Buy it.
An Excellent Album.......2006-09-24
In an era where much of rock is fueled with misogyny and lumbering Nickelback-esque rhythms, Killswitch Engage is a breath of fresh air. Alive Or Just Breathing is an excellent album highlighted by the constant shift from pulverizing rhythms into melodic cleanly-sung choruses. Their change in dynamics rivals those of Disturbed's Believe. This album amounts to a fusion of almost death metal and melody. An even stronger contrast is the mix of thundering vocals with uplifting lyrics. That's because Killswitch Engage's lyrics are optimistic, singing about how "love will overcome", instead of focusing on death and destruction as so many bands do. In certain tracks, such as "Fixation on the Darkness", Jesse Leach (now replaced by Howard Jones) sounds like Tom Araya of Slayer, which is not a good thing. However, the heavier parts of their music remind me of a slightly slower Slayer (South of Heaven-esque); this is a good thing. The album contains no solos (The End of Heartache has one), but the music is still technically complex. The album is filled throughout with good songs, but obvious highlights are the opener "Numbered Days", "Fixation on the Darkness", "My Last Serenade", and the haunting interlude "Without a Name", which leads into the thundering and sensational closer "Rise Inside". The only possible flaw in this album is that at times it is TOO consistent, since every song is an alternation of heavy and soft, but that is a minor detail which is easily overshadowed by the best moments of the album. KSE's next album is more refined and technically complex and therefore slightly better, but credit this album with laying the foundation for the heavy/soft dynamics that flourish throughout this band's songs. This is an excellent album, very highly recommended.
KE at their finest.......2006-06-30
This is KE at their finest. The songs on this album carry a meaning which is a welcome change from CDs that just babble on and on about nothing but blood and dying and the grave. Jesse's vocals are better than Howard's in my opinion. It's too bad Jesse left the band and started a band called Seemless, who aren't even that good. The best songs on this disc are Fixation on the Darkness, My Last Serenade, and Life to Lifeless.
MEH.......2006-06-02
My friend let me borrow this album along with Between The Buried and Me's first album and Converge: Jane Doe.
FIRST OFF: THE OPENING RIFFS IN "MY LAST SERENADE" WERE STOLEN FROM SLAYER'S "GHOST OF WAR" FROM THE ALBUM SOUTH OF HEAVEN... minus the double bass... I'm surprised nobody pointed that out yet...
I didn't catch on with this band nor did I enjoy this album. There's just something about them that I don't like. It's probably because music like this has already been done before and there really isn't anything 'great' or 'new' about the type of music on this album.
If you've never listened to any of Metallica's older stuff, Slayer, and Hatebreed, you're probably gonna think this stuff is amazing. If you want good HEAVY metal pick up every older Slayer (their new stuff is ok too) and Metallica albums. Other great alternatives are Lamb Of God, Converge, Between The Buried and Me, The Red Chord.
Overated But Excellent.......2006-05-24
This is probably one of the best melodic metalcore releases from one of the best bands of this style. Yes, this band is definitley overated to the extreme but unlike some of their contemperaries like Lamb of God and Shadows Fall, this band actually deserves to be listened to. They don't have a bunch of melodic riffs and shredding like that of the great In Flames that every other melodic metalcore band uses. Also, the metalcore in this is some of the best sounding I have listened to. It doesn't sound like too much hardcore and especially emocore. This is 110% metal here people. Since this is my only cd that I own buy these guys, I can't compare it to their other stuff, but if this cd is this good , I have no doubt that their s/t and End of Heartache are equally excellent. A definite buy.

Come Back!!.......2007-05-26
No lie one of the best albums I have ever owned. It has been in my car since 2003...if someone knows the members of this band...please encourage them to get back together!!! I need more of there music...one album is not enough.
a bright star that faded too fast.......2007-04-04
Like probably everybody else, I first heard of Revis from their single Caught In The Rain off of the Daredevil soundrack. I immediately loved the song and vowed to get the album of this band that I had never heard of. Wow, was I impressed! Places For Breathing, the one and only album from Revis, is strong stuff. I especially like Justin Holman's voice. It is very powerful and obviously sung with a depth and emotional quality that we don't get from a lot of lead singers. Caught In The Rain, the opening track, is a little harder than the rest of the songs here, but make no mistake; this is a great album from start to finish. It isn't music to bang your head to; rather, it is strong, thoughtful, mood-creating music for the contemplative rocker. My favorites on here are: Caught In The Rain (obviously), Seven, City Beneath, and Everything After. I really, really like Places For Breathing, and hope these guys get it back together and bring some more great alt-rock to the table. There's way too much musical talent here to let fade away after only one album.
Favorite Rock CD.......2006-09-14
There comes only a few times in your life when you discover a CD that hits every emotion, cord, and musical taste in your body and soul. A CD that you play 35 times in 4 days and cant believe you havent gotten sick of it yet. Revis is the band that did it for me. I discovered this band during my senior year of college (3 years ago) on an internet radio station. "Seven" was the song. I turned the volume up in awe, realizing that I had come upon a song that I thought was above anything I had listened to recently. I immediately recognized that this was the same band that wrote "caught in the rain", a song that I had been listening to off of the "Daredevil" movie soundtrack for 6 months already. It took no thought to buy the CD or keep it as my music of choice for the next year. "Your Wall" hit nerves I had never felt before while weightlifting; "Look Right Through Me" and "Living Rooms" made me want to cry, and "Spin" helped me through the emotional toils of senior year. The band is rumored to have broken up, which in my mind is devastating. They will be forever one of the most potent rock bands I've ever listened to. A rock band that I will recommend to everyone and anyone who listens to music for that emotional appeal that is discovered only a handful of times throughout your life.
Original lyrics and great sound.......2006-08-10
First heard a Revis song (Caught in the Rain) come out of a computer game and when I heard samples of the album I decided to give it a go... Good choice! This is an excellent CD with a good combination of solid, strong lyrics with variable paced melodies, Revis really know how to set the mood of their songs. Highly recommended.
Dreamy, catchy, but a tad boring.......2006-04-12
Places For Breathing by Revis is a good, solid, alt rock album. And the disc has cool dreamy sound effects which kinda put peaceful feelings in you. But unfortunatly, most of the songs dont really have a hook that pulls you in and keeps you listening. There are a couple of good ones on here though, these include Caught In The Rain, Seven, Your Wall,Spin, and Re Use. I'd recomend you listen for yourself and see what you think.

best cd ever.......2007-04-28
okay, i only named it that because of the few who rated it 1 star and... the one who rated it 3. it really is one of my favorite cd's though. it is an aquired taste and a love it or hate it cd. if you rate this a 3, i really don't understand you. i have fallen asleep to this cd blasting in my headphones once, and that is truly terrible. because this is probably THE heaviest cd i own, and although the members have changed (besides scogin) the chariot continue to rule with UNSUNG and the fiancee. they never cease to amaze me, but this album will take time to grow on you. once you do, you WILL NOT put it down for a LONG time.
The Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Ch Chariot!!!!.......2006-04-21
Well, obviously if you are looking at the reviews for this CD you may be seeing that people either LOVE this CD or HATE this CD. I am one of those that LOVE it. The Chariot is mainly a thrash band without the 30 second songs. They have all the brutality of The Locust, Et Tu Brute? and bands in that genre without having 1.) The blood lusty, depressing lyrics, and 2.) The half minute songs that all sound the same after an hour of listening.
The Chariot is fronted by Josh Scogin of Norma Jean (Who, by the way, does a LOT better than the new vocalist they have). He has a huge range with his vocals and brings over his trademark long song titles for this CD. (Check out the title for track #2) But the lyrics he writes are poetic and uplifting, not dark and disturbing like others in the genre. And if you pick up "Everything Is Alive..." check out their "Unsung EP" with some new music and a concert video that is wicked. Bottom line is, though, you are going to like it or hate it. So maybe borrow it before you buy it to check it out. But if you are a fan of Norma Jean or even As I Lay Dying, you should give it a once over.
Chaotic Metal: Definitely An Acquired Taste.......2006-04-06
I got a good laugh out of the sticker on the corner of "Everything Is Alive..." that read something like "For Fans of Opeth, Unearth, and ASHLEE SIMPSON". A band on Solid State Records that sounds like a mediocre pop "star"? Yeah right; this band definitely has sense of humor.
When I first played the CD, I listened to the first track all the way through. I absolutely hated it. I then skipped through all the other tracks and listened to about 30 seconds of each. More of the same. I couldn't believe that I had wasted my money on this pile of slow-paced loud noisy garbage. The guitar feedback grated on my eardrums, and I ended up with a massive headache. Needless to say, I took a break from The Chariot for a while.
A few weeks later, however, the song "Die Interviwer" popped up on my mp3 player's random shuffle, so I listened to the whole song. I could actually tolerate it. Soon, I started listening to more and more songs from the album, and I was amazed by the realness of the sound, and the incredible brutality of it all: the ripping guitars, the pounding drums, and the lead singer, who roars like a man possessed. I listened to the album all the way through, and I was hooked.
The Chariot is a truly incredible band, and is nothing like I've ever heard before. They draw a listener in more than Norma Jean ever will. They are just as amazingly brutal in concert, also. However, a word of warning: You cannot just start listening to this band. A love of metal is required, and you have to be open to new styles. I would recommend listening to bands such as Becoming the Archetype before picking this album up. But it is well worth it; listening to The Chariot is a breathtaking experience.
DO NOT!.......2006-02-20
This is one of the worst metal releases of all and I mean
ALL time. Lots of long song titles that make no sense and
are stupid. Short songs. Sloppy metal. Horrible screaming.
Crap. Get zao instead.
Feedbackfest 04! Starring The Chariot.......2006-02-08
Well.......what to say about this album other than.....it has mroe feedback than a Who concert (even at 13 decibels haha!) This one is decent at best....I'm glad a friend of mine burned it for me instead of me going out and actually paying full price because it's not that great. I was expecting so much from Scogin but ya know what......if you really want to hear what this band can really do, check out The Unsung EP. Now I can understand how most people really love the rawness, I am one of them believe me, but ya know what....there is only so much feedback that one person can take without wanting to throw the CD out the window. The one blessing that this album gives you is that it's only 29 minutes long. My favorite song on the CD by far is track 5 And Then, Came Then. I love the intro with the classical music, then Josh's bone rattling roar blasts from the speakers. If you're looking for Norma Jean 2....don't listen to this CD. The only thing NJ about this CD is Scogin. But if you're interested in The Chariot, listen to The Unsung EP...the songs have more of a polish but it still showcases the talent wonderfully.

I don't like New Age Music.......2006-03-26
But this is good music. I got this to do Tai Chi to and it works great . I've bought Cd's that are supposedly for Tai Chi and the flow required just isn't there. This cd is not only smooth and flowing enough for Tai Chi, but also 'quiet' and soft enough for meditation, and at the same time just nice enough to put on at home or in the car and just LISTEN to. It never sounds repetitive or too minimal , and yet it doesn't change so drastically in tempo or tone that Tai Chi or meditation is adversely affected. I love it and very highly recommend it.
Breathing Spaces.......2006-03-09
Hypnotic ~ this is the utmost best albulm. Her music is breath-taking. It mentally catures you, takes you away to a magical place, then leaves you with a tingeling sense gladness. I listen to it all the time. I wish Jiang Xiao-Qing had more CD's ... I'd buy them all.
Music that touches your soul.......2005-06-17
Absolutely brilliant and peaceful.
If you can combine "calming, touching, heartwarming, soothing" into one word, let me know so I can describe just how good this CD is!

In Love Jiang.......2005-04-20
I have found a new and personal friend in Jiang Xiao-Qing. A very personal serenade for those quiet moments in the evenings of life.
The Exquisite Heart of Stillness.......2004-10-01
From the very first listening I was encaptivated by these beautiful gentle melodies. Easy on Western ears but with wonderful oriental instrumentation and tonal scales. The music has an undercurrrent of spirituality, you can tangibly feel Jiang Xiao-Qing's committment to her playing and the emotion she has poured into her performances. Just one track from this album is enough to make me feel relaxed - I play it in the car, I play it when I get home from work and I play it before I go to bed. It is calming, restful and uplifting; the exquisite heart of stillness.

Ben Lee got the jump on being a pop star by starting his career when other kids his age were more concerned with acne medication than writing the perfect love song. A lo-fi savant, Lee's humble approach and off-kilter, nasal wail called to mind his acknowledged idol Jonathan Richman. Here, at the ripe old age of 20, he has managed to maintain the precocious, friendly, and wide-eyed personality that influenced both Noise Addict and his early solo efforts, while graduating to more complex musical structures. Breathing Tornados sounds like it has an intravenous feed from early-'80s MTV, with electroriffs and catchy refrains coursing through the tubing. But luckily, Lee's lo-fi tendencies still rule the day and the synthesizers and computers are used with the same simple joy with which he bashed out nerd-rock love songs on his teenage guitar. --Lois Maffeo

i had the pleasure of seeing him live, when he opened for J Mascis, and he was amazing. "Burn To Shine" was soooo passionate.. buy this
I Love It.......2003-01-02
Ben Lee's music has really evolved. I love the new sound, it's much more mature. There are so many great tracks on the album. Check out I Am A Sunflower; it's currently my favorite. Buy Breathing Tornados - You'll be glad you did ;)
mediocre, but thats not always bad.......2002-02-28
OVERALL its pretty dull, and somewhat repetitive, but incredibly relaxing. If you wanna relax, sit back, and just chill, this album is perfect. Nothing too hardcore (to say the least), but I like it. A good buy, worth the money.
Breathing new life!!!.......2001-06-17
Okay it's 1999, just about every artist now days want to add some drum loop or some crazy computer effect in their songs. Now former Noise Addict Aussie (and Double Dare contestant!) is one of those artists who follow in that direction. But unlike other artists who uses the drum loop and samples as something "now "or gimmicky (like the awful Sugar Ray... "Every Morning" I have to listen to that ....ha ha), Ben Lee really uses it to it's advantage, breathing new life in his songs. These are not your basic four-track Ben Lee acoustic albums (Grandpaw Would and Something To Remember Me By) The opener, "Cigarettes Will Kill You", starts off with piano very reminiscent to Fiona Apple's "Fast As You Can". And has a great chorus, "I wish everyone was wrong." On song two, "Nothing Much Happens" features a monologue by Kids and Sonic Youth`s "Sunday" video director Harmony Korine. When song three comes, it sounds like Ben is getting his groove on "I Am A Sunflower" that sounds a bit like Barry White. Maybe it's the fact he's getting some from ex-My So-Called Life Star Claire Danes that Ben's lyrics sound more sensual than the other albums. Another factor in the writing of Breathing Tornados was that it was recorded in some guy's house that made some ...!? (Yes it's true, go to some site and read about it.) There are some classic Ben Lee songs "The Finger and the Moon" featuring very minimal organ and acoustic guitar with slow drumbeats. "Birthday Song" and "10ft. Tall" is just Ben with his guitar with barely any accompanying percussion. Want something jazzy or funky? Listen to "Nighttime" "Burn to Shine" or "Sandpaperback" (with Sean Lennon on guest vocals) Throughout the 12 songs on this album, Ben searches for someone he could be intimate with. Using "organic" or "electronic" methods, he sings with the passion to grab anyone listening. Sure, he does have some weird nasal thing in his voice, which may be hard for people to listen to. (C'mon he's Australian!) But give it a chance please.... This is one talented young man who may be the future of rock and roll!

Album Description
Chakra breathing meditation can help you to become aware of and experience each of the seven chakras. This meditation is active and uses deep rapid breathing and body movement, accompanied by musical sounds to open and bring awareness and vitality to the chakras.
Customer Reviews:
THIS WORKS.......2006-02-15
This is not for the faint of heart. If you want to open the chakras, and eventually raise Kundalini, this is for you. You can do it once a week or so, but to REALLY get in there and open things up, do it once a day. Be ready for your emotional 'stuff' to be brought to the surface though. The meditation is intense, beautiful, healing. The results appear quickly (if doing daily). I recommend you arm yourself with a bit of Kundalini knowledge and be prepared for some intense emotional clearing. Then, enjoy the ride.

Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915 is a setting of a lovely chunk of prose text by James Agee describing an evening from his childhood. An accomplished singer himself, Barber's vocal writing is expert, and this work must rank as one of the finest examples of the art of word-setting in any language. Barber perfectly captures the conversational quality of the text, while at the same time clothing the words in an atmosphere of gentle nostalgia. It's a masterpiece that Dawn Upshaw sings with keen insight and lovely tone. The remainder of the program is creatively chosen as well, making this one of the finest vocal recitals available by an American singer. --David Hurwitz

Excellent Material for Ms. Upshaw........2006-04-26
'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' is a performance of a selection of operatic pieces by Americans such as Samuel Barber or Europeans transplanted to the United States, such as Igor Stravinsky. Ms. Upshaw shines with material, which is good for her, since she is just slightly out of her league with the material covered by the likes of Renee Flemming on the operatic front and Ute Lemper and Lotte Lenya on the Euro/American popular musical stage.
Like any good sampler, this recording's strongest draw is the fact that it makes one interested in tracking down the complete works by Barber, Menotti, Harbison, and Stravinsky. And, while the package includes all lyrics, everything is in perfectly clear English. A perfect addition to other American classics such as 'Porgy and Bess'.
Keeps Getting Better.......2005-03-02
I have had this disc for years, and I'm more impressed with it as the years roll by. I bought it for Barber's "Knoxville, Summer of 1915" which is a glorious piece of music caught here in a luminous performance. I didn't initially warm up to the Harbison songs, but they have grown on me over the years to the point that I listen to them far more often than the Barber now. I think it just took me a while to absorb Harbison's style and understand how deftly and ingeniously he uses it to take the listener into Mirabai's world. Not to be missed!
The Barber alone is worth five stars.......2004-01-16
People are always saying that they find a particular piece of music is "haunting." For me Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" is such a work. Dawn Upshaw's reading of this great American masterwork is the best I have yet heard. She won her first Grammy Award for this recording - and deservedly so. If you're a fan of either Upshaw or Barber you'll want to add this beautiful CD to your collection.
Buy this disc...twice!.......2002-07-20
Extraordinary!! This has got to be the definitive Knoxville--rich, touching, elegant and as close to perfect as it can probably ever be. Upshaw has the perfect voice for this work, and she gives it all the loving attention that it requires. This is a performance of Knoxville that will make you weak in the knees. For the Knoxville alone, buy this disc....twice! There is, however, just a little bit of downside here. The other works on this disc just aren't very captivating.
Dawn Upshaw, vocal actress extraordinaire.......2002-01-01
This is the CD that made me fall in love with Dawn Upshaw's singing. I had heard her before and admired her work, but this disc made me a real fan. As it's one of her early recordings, her voice is somewhat "fuller" than on later work; she later started moving the voice "forward," simplifying the sound. Either way, her immense talent for communicating the essence of the text is the outstanding aspect of all her work. It's amazing how she can sound angry, desperate, hopeful, melancholic, all while producing a beautiful sound and tackling all the vocal challenges of the music she's singing. She inhabits the characters, the narrators, of each of the pieces on this disc, and makes it more than just a collection of songs or arias.
I want to make special mention of the Harbison _Mirabai Songs_, as it seems to have been maligned somewhat in other reviews here. This was the work that most kept me coming back to this disc when I first bought it. I think it is a masterpiece, and one of Harbison's best and most important works. (Apparently I'm not alone in my admiration of the piece, because I've heard it on a number of live concerts in recent years, so it seems to be having a successful performance life.) Harbison's song cycle is by turns exciting, sensual, driving, longing, beautiful. The orchestration for the small ensemble is masterful (as Harbison's efforts at scoring always are), and Upshaw expresses all of Mirabai's complex emotions enchantingly.
The _Rake's Progress_ aria also deserves individual comment. In this engrossing example of Stravinsky's neoclassical style, Upshaw assumes Anne's air of fierce determination, and brings the disc to an absolutely thrilling climax on a concluding high C.
All of the music on this terrific CD is very accessible, and the performances are stellar. The recorded sound is very clear and immediate, as one would expect from Nonesuch. It's one of my favorite discs in my entire collection, and would probably be so for the Harbison and Stravinsky alone.

Pulverizing Masterpiece.......2007-05-19
Despite criticism from many, Killswitch Engage are undeniably an amazingly talented band with something many bands don't portray these days, HEART. The band as a whole pours all their soul, energy, love, emotion, tears, heart, and ambition into the music they produce. What you get in return is perhaps the best music you'll find in the current state of metal. An extremely original band, Killswitch gives the listener a lot to think about and a lot of hope and inspiration amongst "negativity" that many bands spill out. This band plays aggressive, sounds agressive, but yet they are such a positive figure to look upon. The album as a whole is probably one of the heaviest thing sout there as far as sound goes. Speaking of sound, the production values are thick, clean, clear and downright explosive. Adam D. knows exactly what he wants when he produces an album, and his careful tending shows beautifully. Every track is an astouding testament to the talent that each individual unit brings to the table. There are no ego's here, this is a band that simply loves the music, loves the fans, and loves one another. I cannot say enough good things about this band, I cannot say enough good things about this album. I have 2 copies of this album, the standard and the re-released. If you do not already own this, for the love of all that is metal, go out and pick up this masterpiece. This is not only KSE's best album by far, but one of the best albums ever released in my opinion, and from what I've seen, many people's opinion.
One of the Greatest Albums I've Ever Owned.......2006-01-23
Killswitch Engage is one of the greatest metal bands out there, highly influential with their style. They can take any sort of song and make it sound amazing. Their stage presence is unlike anything I've ever seen either, whether it's the comedic theatrics of Adam D., Mike D. throwing his bass every which where, Justin "rocking" his beard on drums, Joel windmilling, or Howard just being...Howard. I love these guys.
The only thing, for all you new Killswitch Engage fans who don't own an album of theirs yet, buy this one first. The End of Heartache is an absolute masterpiece, don't get me wrong...But I'm sorry, Howard on vocals just doesn't match Jesse's. (Jesse is on vocals on the album Alive or Just Breathing, whereas Howard is the vocalist on The End of Heartache, watch their documentary you'll understand). Jesse is so much better in my opinion, and his lyrics are a lot catchier than Howard's. Check this album out first for sure, although both are beyond amazing.
You Need To Own This Album.......2005-11-13
As most people know, Roadrunner Records has been reissuing influential records from their catalogue for the celebration of its 25th Anniversary. It's only fitting that Killswitch Engage's "Alive Or Just Breathing" should be one of those influential re-released albums. Largely responsible for bringing the metal/hardcore hybrid to the mainstream, "Alive Or Just Breathing" is simply one of the best albums I've ever had to pleasure of listening to, and it's one thing to have missed out on listening to it the first time around, but now that most people are getting a second chance (and an extremely good deal at that), there's no real excuse not to hear this revolutionary cd. The re-issue contains a bonus disc with unreleased b-sides and demos from the album, as well as out-takes, and makes the purchase of this album a must for any fan of the band who somehow seemed to have skipped this album in the past.
Killswitch Engage was one of the first bands in the music world to start playing what has come to be known as "metalcore", starting with their humble debut on Ferret records. However when the time came for a second effort, following their move to Roadrunner Records, Killswitch Engage unleashed the monster known as "Alive Or Just Breathing" on us. It's safe to say that anything the band attempted on the first record (Gothenburg influenced metal riffs, heavy breakdowns, trade off screaming/singing) has been absolutely perfected on this release. With Adam moving from drums back to guitar, and original Aftershock (Mike, Joel and Adam's band before KSE) drummer Tom taking his place behind the kit, the band has a much fuller sound. Adam and Joel are free to trade off licks on tracks like "Self Revolution" and "Fixation On The Darkness", while playing deeper tones together on others like "Life To Lifeless". Mike D's bass, and Tom's drumming are also flawless, giving the band the much needed driving backbone that propels "Numbered Days" or "Temple From The Within." Jesse Leach though shines above all others on this release. Like many others I still prefer Jesse to Howard, and really miss the presence he brought to the band. His trademark vocals create beautiful moments on "My Last Serenade" or "The Element of One", where Jesse goes from high pitched shrieks, to deep growls and then instantly into beautifully dynamic choruses. His vocals were often an overlooked aspect of the band, and now that he has departed, you can see the obvious difference it has made in KSE's sound. You may not think that a vocalist who can sing and scream is anything special anymore, but when this album came out, only a hand full of bands were doing it, and it was especially absent in metal. Now it's commonplace in almost all genres. The biggest standout on the album has got to be the semi-title track "Just Barely Breathing" (which seems to be the answer to the question purposed by the album's title "Alive, or Just Breathing?"), which is a hauntingly heavy tune, one minute going from a gloomy driving rhythm, right into blazing guitar riffs and screaming, only to be taken to further heights during the gigantic chorus where Jesse questions "Are we alive, or just breathing?" Jesse's lyrics always added a positive message to the band's music, as can be seen on "To The Sons of Man" or "Rise Inside", whereas most of the band's newer material seems to focus on love or emotional aspects ("Rose Of Sharyn", "The End Of Heartache"). Jesse could write about emotional struggle ("Vide Infra", "In The Unblind") and not make it come off too emo or whiny, but instead about finding true strength in one's self and overcoming your demons. There is not one second on the album that is dull or uninspiring, and this cd easily captures rotation after rotation on my stereo. Everything this cd presented was far ahead of its time, and many aspects are now common trademarks in both the metal and hardcore world. Simply put, this was KSE's shining moment.
The bonus disc is a great addition to any fans collection, but may not necessarily warrant the purchase of the album if you already own the original. You get "In The Unblind" and "Where the Balance Is Broken", two excellent B-Sides from the AOJB recording sessions, and an interlude that would have fit perfectly on the album, entitled "Untitled and Unloved." The other tracks are demos of "Fixation On The Darkness", "Just Barely Breathing" and "Numbered Days", which ultimately got the band its deal with Roadrunner. There's also the verison of "Fixation On The Darkness" re-recorded with Howard's vocals, which is a welcomed addition, as well as some out-takes from the studio which are pretty comical, and shows the band doesn't take themselves too seriously. The bonuses are a great touch if you never owned the original (and indeed this would be the version to purchase if that were the case), but if you already have the previous, you're probably better off just downloading the extra tracks off the internet or something.
Metalcore is a pretty stagnant genre right now, and there's millions of bands doing the exact same thing, and sounding exactly the same. When Killswitch Engage's "Alive Or Just Breathing" was released, it was revolutionary, because the idea of fusing swedish metal riffs, breakdowns, and dynamic vocals had not been done by any other bands. With this release KSE single handedly gave metalcore some respect, and paved the ways for the countless numbers of imitators that have come afterwards. If you've never heard this album before now, I would encourage you to pick this up as fast as possible, because you are really missing out on some truly amazing music, and an album that was truly revolutionary in both the hardcore and metal worlds. So pick this one up and figure out whether we are "Alive or Just Breathing".....
Better than ever, and easily one of the best of the 25th anniversay series.......2005-11-02
In the spirit of the label's anniversary and the upcoming dvd that'll be out this month, it's very appropriate to redo and reissue this album giving it the same awesome treatment as the other reissues they've put out this year. You get of course the entire album remastered, new linar notes and artwork, a bonus cd of b-sides and rarities and all the music videos released for this record. Expect nothing less than great if you're a fan of Killswitch Engage.
Awesome CD with Tons of bonuses.......2005-11-02
Well, Alive or Just Breathing is just an awesome CD. Killswitch combines great instruments with great vocals. And if you're looking for some intelligent upbuilding lyrics, you've found em. It's a refreshing change for a metal band not to have evil satanic lyrics. But the delivery is just as awesome. Great screaming; great singing and melody. The bonuses rock, too. You've got a twenty-two page booklet with great new artwork, a buttload of pictures, lyrics, and alotta interviews with the band about the cd. Disc two has unreleased tracks, demo tracks, out takes from the studio, and all 3 videos from the album. All I have to say is GREAT band, GREAT CD, and GREAT bonus features. Do yourself a favor and pick it up!!!

If you don't know what to say, then move on................2005-01-10
Why do some people write reviews that don't tell us anything but that don't get it? Glen Velez is one of the great musicians of our time, and one of the more progressive thinkers as to the benifits of musics healing powers. I highly advise everyone to listen to the audio samples and go to Glenvelez.com to become better informed before writing senseless reviews. jb
I don't know what to say..............2001-02-08
How can a reviewer rate an album as "one-star", and then write only polite comments? I don't know. My personal experience with this album was unpleasant. Glen Velez wrote some facinating music with some very serious new-age philosophy to back it up. I truly understand where he wanted to go. Personally, this album missed it for me. My chakras (?) did not react the way the music intended. My reaction was contrary to the design of the music.
Something Different.......2001-01-07
This CD combines the simple melodies of pan flute, cello, and voice chant with complex and pleasing rythms, produced predominantly on frame drums. The mixture is suprising and delightful! Its not quite like anything else I've heard. Glen Velez is a composer who is thinking outside of the box. Most music has a complex melody with a simple backbeat, this is exactly the inverse of what you are used to! Try it, you'll like it!
