More than practically any other African musician, King Sunny Ade has enjoyed unparalleled longevity, both at home and with Western music fans. Born into Nigerian royalty (the "King" is not merely a courtesy title), he embarked upon his chosen career path early, incorporating traditional rhythms and percussion, chilled-out vocals, sinuous bass lines, and especially the wacked-out, psychedelic guitar of Bob Ohiri. During the '60s and '70s, Ade's mature sound slowly evolved; although he was years away from an international breakthrough, his trademark stylistic markers were already in place, hastening him toward historic doings. The bandleader's high, nasal voice, wreathed in talking drums and shakers, echoed by a call-and-response choir, reflected Yoruba folkways along with hints of Muslim and Christian religious and secular music. By now, Ade's songs had become longer and more subtle; many of his intricate, gradually unfolding sets of themes and variations were clocking in at twenty minutes-plus on record and over an hour live. As on Shanachie's excellent Best of the Classic Years (2003), these tunes, although unquestionably landmark recordings, have hardly been heard outside of the maestro's homeland. They constitute a crucial document of Ade's first flush of local fame, and if the sound quality is slightly over-resonant, it is also remarkably vivid and clear. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars You helped with our 50th anniversary.......2006-03-23

My husband and I have been married 50 years and our daughter wanted to make a DVD of our life and the music that we had. Our song when we were going together was "Young Love" by Sonny James. I was thrilled to death when we found it and she set it to our DVD with all the pictures. We used many of the songs as they were of our "era". Thank you so very much....it was fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite titled correctly, but still nice to listen to.......2004-08-20

As a couple of other reviewers state, this CD set has a couple of items that I wouldn't call "instrumental." One, Percy Faith/Felicia Sanders on "The Song from Moulin Rouge," happens to be one of my all-time favorites, and the other, Billy Vaughn/Ken Nordine on "The Shifting Whispering Sands," is a fiendishly hard to find piece, especially if you are looking for the whole thing (it ran about twice as long as a typical '50s hit!) so I have to forgive the producers for their lapses.

Some of the songs on here overlap another CD I reviewed earlier, "Big Hits of the '50s," and I'd rather not have the overlap, but this is something hard to avoid these days. And it has some truly hard to find pieces (like the abovementioned "Shifting Whispering Sands," and the Dick Hyman version of "Moritat," which sounds totally different from the versions appearing under the name of "Mack the Knife"), so that even with that overlap, I'm glad I have both CDs in my collection.

Anyone who likes the pre-rock'n'roll era's music is sure to find some favorites on here. There are a couple of pieces where I'd consider that the version on this CD set is not the top version (It has Ralph Marterie's version of "Skokiaan" rather than the Bulowayo Sweet Rhythms Band's, and certainly Les Baxter's is not the definitive version of "Unchained Melody" -- but if you are stressing instrumentals, Baxter's would be the one you'd select, of course). But even in those cases, the versions did make the charts as well as the top versions, so they can be accepted. And over all, this is a nice set to listen to.

All in all, considering all the pieces I've mentioned, as well as the last Big Band pieces to chart (the '50s are certainly after the Big Band era, but Jimmy Dorsey had a hit with "So Rare" as late as the middle of the decade! And it's on this set.) This is a great collection.

    3 out of 5 stars It Ain't All Instrumentals.......2003-02-24

The people who be this CD out, should look up the word INTRUMENTAL.
If this word means singing. You have a CD set. Without the vocals this two CD set should have been out as a single CD.

    3 out of 5 stars It Ain't All Instrumentals.......2003-02-22

Someone should tell the people who put this CD set to look up the word Instrumental. It does not mean singing.

5 out of 5 stars once there were greenfields.......2002-01-18

A truly amazing collection of wonderful music from the pre-rock days! This album has it all: Frank Chacksfields "Ebb tide" (1953), Nelson Riddle's Lisbon Antigua (#1 in 1956) and there's even the immortal, enchanting "April in Portugal" (#1 in 1955). Not to mention Percy Faith's "Delicado" - what a delicious toe-tapper it still is! Makes me go back to the days when really enjoyable music became big hits. OK, I'm pushing 60, so I'm prejudiced. But for a guy my age, this collection is priceless. If you're part of the post-war generation, don't hesitate, buy this CD. You won't regret it, instead, you will play it over and over. Yeah, it's true, they don't make hits like this anymore...

5 out of 5 stars A raw and powerful collection.......2002-01-18

Specialty records was best known as the folks who brought the likes of Little Richard to the fore in the 50s, but it's rawest and most powerful work of the era was with Black Gospel music. Unknown to almost everyone but Black churchgoers at the time, these were unquestionably the strongest and most emotional Black records of that time. No matter what your religious beliefs are, you will be awed and blown away by tunes like "Lord Lord Lord" by Alex Bradford, "My Rock" by the Swan Silvertones, the eerie "Prayer for the Doomed" by the Chosen Gospel Singers (don't listen to this one alone in a dark room, folks), and any of the selctions by Sam Cooke's Soul Stirrers, Dorothy Love Coates, and The 5 Blind Boys of Alabama. This is the high-energy stuff with the feeling that Soul Singers and rock & rollers have tried to capture ever since. A good companion piece to this is "The Great 1955 Shrine Concert" featuring many of the same artists. Only complaint about this collection-no liner notes telling us about the songs and artists. Either way, behold and be awed.

5 out of 5 stars Listen to this soul stirring singing by Sam Cooke.......2000-06-14

Sam Cooke is a great legend. He sings with such an anointing. He feels what he sings and that is what makes this album a great one. I just get chill bumps when I hear him sing because he has a sweetly anointed voice. If you want to be sung to sleep physically or spiritually this is the perfect CD.

5 out of 5 stars A collection of material that is just that...some gems to enjoy!.......2006-02-13

With "Gems", Aerosmith gives us some more of their backlog of hits that were screaming "don't forget about us!" during the bands commercial explosiveness of the late 80's and beyond.
The songs found on this particular album are perhaps the most metal/strongest to date. Powerful, gritty and raw, yet still smoothe enough to keep up with the growling, signature screeching that frontman Steven Tyler screeches throughout the record.

"Lick and a Promise" and "Chip away the stone" are great lil rock gems that aren't to fast or to slow, and get the message across. The most prolific rock songs to me coming from this album are "No Surprize" which have an awesome sounding crescendo when Tyler speaks to us "Midnight lady,Situation fetal,Vaccinate your a** with your phonograph needle.." and WHAM in comes the signature guitar lick from Perry that I never tire of hearing! "Critical Mass" and "Nobodies Fault" are also great raw rollicking tunes as well. Gems is aptly named, as we can relish some of the bands earlier sometimes blasting rockers coupled with a Blues feel on the slower tracks.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but almost useless.......2005-09-13

Released in 1988, this compilation is a set of Aerosmith lesser known, but still excellent songs. It contains the band's selected records from their self-titled debut (1973) to Rock In A Hard Place (1982). So, You've got the no-hits, but rockin' gems here like No Surprize, Lick And A Promise, one of Aerosmith's most underrated songs Rats In The Cellar, and also the more known two, Train Kept A Rollin' and Mama Kin, just to mention a few. This album also includes very rare studio version of Chip Away The Stone. After all, there's still something to be desired. I'm a bit disappointed by the track selection. Where's Big 10 Inch Record, Write Me A Letter, Milk Cow Blues, or Reefer Head Woman? It would be better to replace weird Round And Round or the famous Mama Kin with some of those tunes.

After all, this compilation is just useless. All of those songs have been already released on the original albums. Even Chip Away The Stone has already appeared on Live! Bootleg and though version included here is a cool gem to own, You can go on without it.

So, instead of getting this, I advise getting their 70s albums instead - You won't regret the money and You'll see there are many more gems in Aerosmith's catalogue.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Aerosmith Anthology.......2005-01-25

GEMS is an excellent anthology of lesser-known Aerosmith songs that is just as great as GET YOUR WINGS, TOYS IN THE ATTIC, ROCKS, GREATEST HITS, and PUMP. Of special interest is the otherwise unavailable studio version of "Chip Away The Stone", which is better than most of the group's recognized "classics." The album also contains such immortal cuts as "Mama Kin" and several others which must be heard to be fully appreciated. Get this CD/cassette along with the others I've mentioned, and I guarantee, you're in for a great ride.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE ONLY 2 AEROSMITH CDS I OWN.......2004-08-14

THIS IS NOT A GREATEST HITS ALBUM. BUT, AN ATTEMPT TO CASH IN ON SOME OF AEROSMITH'S 1970S SONGS. EVEN THOUGH IT'S JUST A COLLECTION OF OLD AEROSMITH SONGS WITH NO NEW MATERIAL AT ALL. BUT, IT IS A VERY GOOD CD TO HAVE FOR ANY AEROSMITH FAN. THE MOST POPULAR SONG ON THIS CD IS ''MAMA KIN''. OTHER THAN THAT, THE REST OF THE SONGS ARE JUST OLD ALBUM TRACKS THAT NEVER WERE SINGLES. THE SONGS I LIKED THE MOST ARE OF COURSE ''MAMA KIN'', ''CHIP AWAY THE STONE'', ''RATS IN THE CELLAR'', AND ''LICK IN A PROMISE''. THESE ARE ALL GREAT SONGS FROM THE BEST TIME PERIOD OF AEROSMITH'S CAREER, WHICH WAS THE 1970S. A GREAT BUY FOR ANY AEROSMITH FAN. AND TO MAKE THINGS BETTER, IT'S PRETTY CHEAP NOW.

4 out of 5 stars A good collection of their deep cuts.......2004-02-09

At the end of the 1970's, Columbia Records released Aerosmith's Greatest Hits. At the time of its release, just about everyone thought their best days were behind them, thus the release of a greatest hits album. Although the album had all the hits, it didn't quite tell the whole story. The beauty of Aerosmith's '70s albums was that the album tracks were just as strong as their singles, especially on Toys In The Attic and Rocks. So with Aerosmith at the beginning of their near impossible comeback of the late '80s with Geffen Records, Columbia hopped on the money train and released Gems, a stellar collection of their best album tracks.

Although this collection was released strictly for profit, it showed fans that came during the late '80s that they were more than the band that did "Dream On" and "Walk This Way." Most of the tracks here are top notch, with 8 of the collection's 12 cuts coming from their first four classic albums. These tracks are the strongest ones here, with the tracks "Rats In The Cellar", "Train Kept A Rollin", and "Mama Kin" still getting regular airplay on classic rock radio. The remaining cuts from these albums, "Nobody's Fault", "Lick And A Promise", "Round And Round", and "Adam's Apple" are also excellent tracks. The tracks "Critical Mass", "No Surprize", and "Jailbait", are all strong tracks which are salvaged from their albums after Rocks, which were progressively weaker with each release as dissention and hard living affected the band's creativity. Also featured here is the excellent studio version of "Chip Away The Stone", which was originally only available as a live track from their Live Bootleg album. This is a strong collection of their lesser known album tracks. It definitely blows away everything they recorded after Pump. If you like the tracks on Gems, I'd highly recommend Rocks and Toys In The Attic, their best albums, and some of the best hard rock recorded in the '70s.

      5 out of 5 stars Bloody brilliant.......2006-12-12

I can play this (both discs) over and over and not grow tired of listening...GLP has one of the most unique and gorgeous voices in all of music. this album is just haunting, esp. Stars 'n' Stripes and Crashing at Corona. this is not beach music, driving music, etc....it's serious turn off all the lights and draw the shades music

      5 out of 5 stars Corona Alona.......2004-06-13

Wonderful collection, worth twice its retail value for "Crashing At Corona" alone (on disc 2). Beautiful melody, mysterious lyrics. Even after three dozen listens, it continues to shiver the spine. Enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars This is "Happiness"........2004-04-27

I'd imagine the majority of fans would have been happy with just a single disc hits album, but everything here is wonderful, and more is better right. Of course the first disc here is all the best, minus a song or three. It includes "Fuzzy", "Homespun", "Truly Truly", and probably their most popular song "Mockingbirds". I'm also glad it has "Honey Don't Think". The second disc is all b-sides and extras, and for the most part, nearly as good as the first disc. None of it really stands out to me yet, but it's all far from filler. As with any "Best Of" album, this is a great collection for the newcomer, and also should appeal to fans of the alt-country scene, etc.

      5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a great songwriter.......2004-03-17

Grant Lee Buffalo and frontman Grant Lee Phillips can definitely be regarded as one of the finest songwriters of Great American tunes. This "gem" of an album is a must have for any avid GLB enthusiast or anyone that appreciates a great collection of music.

This album not only provides a well rounded collection of the great GLB rips like "Fuzzy", "Lone Star Song", and "Truly, Truly" but the group has also graciously given us a second disc of outstanding tunes that won't be found on their other albums, including a handful of acoustic versions.

This cd set has it all and it delivers the best of the best. If you have never heard of these guys...definitely give them a listen...you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars A good Patti "chill" album - not for dancing around the room.......2005-10-10

While I am a Patti LaBelle fan, I give 'Gems' 3 stars because in my opinion, it leans too much on the ballad side. Don't get me wrong - Patti's vocals are at their best when she delivers an emotional, powerful ballad but 10 of the 12 tracks on this album are ballads. The only real uptempo tracks are 'The Right Kinda Lover' and 'This Word Is All'. If Patti would've included 2 more tracks like these danceful ditties, 'Gems' would be a solid album and a welcome addition to any fan's Patti LaBelle catalogue. This album was quickly forgotten after its release, which is too bad. Patti's previous album 'Burnin' and her follow-up to this one 'Flame' were much better efforts and are definitely worth picking up.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Patti at her best.......2002-10-26

This a great CD that only gets better with replay. Shows her great range, from soft to belting it out, from funky to smooth. I've owned it for years and still listen to it frequently. Highly recommended.

      4 out of 5 stars Gems.......2000-07-22

Ok, at a first listen, this may not be one of Patti's best Cds. Afterall, it followed one of her best CDS ever, "Burnin" However, the more you listen to this CD, you appreciate Patti's ability to phrase a song and her ability to purr and to roar. Songs such as "Stay in My Corner", "Right Kinda Lover", "If I didn't have You", "Time will Tell" make this CD well worth the buy. Some of the other cuts you will love the more you listen to them. She does a relaxed but great version of "All this Love". People who prefer to hear Patti belting might be disappointed with some of the selections on the Cd, they all don't give her the chance to break loose. But as always, her style is admirable and there are many times on the Cd her power shines through. I especially like the background vocals that she performs on the Cd.

5 out of 5 stars Patti at her best!.......1999-03-23

Patti LaBelle is a GEM of our time. Being in the musical industry for over 35 years, she is the best there is. Everyone, including the likes of Oprah Winfry and Rosie O'Donnel, say that they can feel the pressence of God when Ms. LaBelle opens her mouth to sing, and that is the truth here. This album showcases the Patti LaBelle that everyone knows. If you're new to the Patti Scene, this is the album for you. An album of mainly ballads, Patti takes you on a smooth ride with infinite vocal range on such tracks as "Stay In My Corner" and "Come As You Are." You can't miss this classic album by the one and only Diva.
