Album Description
This project is about exploring and expanding the vocabulary of musical story telling: Stories as words, as music, as theater. And that’s exactly what the songs in "An American Song Album" are: musical stories. A special feature of the CD is an enhanced CD that can be played in the CD-ROM drive of your computer. The enhanced CD traces those roots and illumines the musical stories with more stories about the lives that created them.

The songs are intriguing. They originally sprang from the lives and heritage of the Scotts Irish immigrants to the US and their descendants, and are part of the heritage of the performers themselves.

EDWARD BARNES is a composer-librettist of more than 15 works of opera/musical theater. His first opera, "Feathertop," was written when he was 19 years old and won him national acclaim when produced in New York by the American Opera Association at Lincoln Center.

KATE PETERS is a singer/actor/violinist with a life-long career in musical theater, classical music, and cabaret. She has appeared in numerous regional musical theatrical productions, recordings for the Musical Heritage Society, and in concerts and recitals, many with Barnes at the piano. She has premiered more than 30 works of new classical music.

Edward and Kate are founding members, along with choreographer, Kimi Okada, of The Metro Ensemble, a music-theatre ensemble. For them, Edward created "The Bones of Love," and "Old Aunt Dinah’s Sure Guide To Dreams and Lucky Numbers," produced in conjunction with the Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia. Other projects together include the music theater piece, "The Vagabond Queen", also available through MMB Music.

All of the songs are based on traditional American folk tunes-- Appalachian ballads, cowboy songs, and gold-rush and railroad melodies-- though that is just the starting point. The combination of dramatic, new music and lyrics, with traditional music and lyrics makes this album a fresh and exciting listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars End to Rest Time Woes.......2007-06-02

My three year old loves this CD and the cling book. It has made her rest time every afternoon a pleasant one for us both. She sings and clings and really uses her imagination. She is occupied and independantly creative. What more could a mom ask for?

4 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2007-05-07

ID PREFER THE DVDS BETTER BUT THIS AUDIO CD VERSION OF IT IS GOOD ALSO.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps them listening.......2007-03-21

My 5 YO son listens to this CD whenever he can find it. He is very engaged and participates as well in the pat, pat, pat and questions the Little Einsteins may ask. I have to hide it so he will do something else. We used it for musical chairs at his Little Einstein birthday party and it was very well received.

5 out of 5 stars Mission Completion!.......2007-03-19

My son LOVES his Little Einstein CD and listens to it all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Little Einstein fans rejoice.......2007-03-08

Ok..my [...]is a HUGE Little Einstein fan. She really loves this cd, however this is more of a story cd. It comes with a little book with removable gel like stickers so that the listener can make the picture of the story being recited. There are 3 or 4 very familiar stories including the music and all the Einstein character voices but I thought it was going to be just songs and music from the program. I was worried at first but it turns out to be a great "quiet time" cd because it's stories and music....your child does not need to use the stickers to enjoy the cd and they actually end up on my windows sometimes!

The jewel in the crown in the Music for Little People catalog, Gift of the Tortoise is stunning in its beauty and uncompromising in its delivery of excellence. Expressed from the viewpoint of a very wise tortoise, the lush harmonies of Ladysmith Black Mambazo are supported by renowned guitarist Johnny Clegg and storyteller Gcina Mhlophe, creating a captivating blend of Zulu lore, South African history, and that country's brave optimism in the post-Apartheid era. As the drama unfolds, the listener is drawn into the spell cast by this marvelous group of players as they carry out the chant of ancestral names on "Two Shelleni," the folk legend of the "Boy Who Turned into a Cat," and the classic "Mbube (the Lion Sleeps Tonight)." --Paige La Grone

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2007-05-13

For anyone wishing quality for their children I've yet to find anything better. This is a magical CD. When it was stolen from the car, my son(now 18)requested I reorder it. The voice of the storyteller transports us to places and feelings we've rarely experienced and yet share a common human experience of joy and hope.If I could only purchase one CD for my child - this would be it...and I would be listening.

5 out of 5 stars We Love It!!.......2006-01-16

I put this on my 19month old daughter's Wish List for Christmas and we just listened to it today. She loved the animal sounds in the beginning and danced to some of the music. It's not something she'll sit down and just listen to as a storytime yet, but I think it will be a timeless addition to our CD collection. As an adult, I enjoyed listening to the stories and the music. A good buy for younger and older children as the music is very rythymic, but not too loud (I think my daughter would have liked it as an infant).

5 out of 5 stars wonderful for our 2-yr-old.......2004-11-25

This album is a great hit with our toddler. Many, many nights she requests to listen to this CD as she goes to sleep. The rhythms are wonderful for young ears, she loves to sing the choruses with the children on the recording............it tickles me to see my daughter respond so positively to lyrics in a language foreign to her.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful....and different.......2004-11-17

My 2 year old son LOVES music - all types. Laurie Berkner has been a fav for a while now. But this cd is DIFFERENT!! In a good way!!!!! It is simply beautiful and fun.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent entertainment!.......2004-11-08

I bought this CD because it was geared toward children, but it had the beautiful acapella harmonies of Ladysimith Black Mombazo, which I enjoy. I found the stories to be enchanting, and my 2.5-year-old loves to sing and clap along to the songs. This is a wonderful CD to have in your own library as a break from nursery rhymes and traditional children's songs. It also makes an excellent gift for friends and family.

3 out of 5 stars Where's Jiminy?.......2006-06-24

I had this record back in the 50's, actually it was my older brothers record. At that time it was entitled "A Day At Disneyland" and it was a great record to listen to before visiting the park itself. This rerelease is good as far as bringing back those fond memories, except one problem, there is no Jiminy Cricket. The original recording had Jiminy narrating along with the music throughout the different lands and was a bit more entertaining. My brother recently obtained the original L.P. in a used record store, I am having him record it for me. This new one is good but I really miss the cricket, Jiminy made it great.

5 out of 5 stars Going back in time.......2006-01-27

As a DUTCH Disneypark fan, I LOVE the music from the parks
verry much! With this CD you go back to the beginning
in the '50 when Walt Disney started Disneyland.
If you like classical music and the movies from Disney
you HEAR that moviemusic in some of these songs.
Nobody is singing on this CD it is just GREAT music!
It all started with Walt Disney and to HEAR him
on this CD is a special gift and moment.

I will go to Disneyland next week and after I come back
I go and will listen to the special 50th CD.
you will here different music then.

5 out of 5 stars A favorite memory returns!.......2006-01-19

On my first trip to Disneyland, my parents bought me an album, narrated by Walt Disney and Jiminy Cricket, featuring a musical tour of Disneyland. As I grew bigger (but never grew up!), this album remained a favorite. As I got married and had children, they enjoyed it as well.

2 years ago, we had a fire, and this treasure was among the many, many things we lost...and now I can have it back, and better than before (on CD, since my old turntable also went up in smoke). Thank you, thank you, a thousand times thank you!

Sure, it's music and narration, and not even "real sounds" from the park...but for a 5 year old child (who won't grow up), it was every bit as real as the tour that it captured.

3 out of 5 stars Historic Music.......2005-09-13

This CD is a faithful recreation of a record originally released in 1956. Not only are the tracks the same, but the cardboard packaging is made to look like the album of old.

The key to understanding this release is the sub-title, a musical tour of the Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney starts each track by briefly describing the spirit of each land. From there on out, you get nothing but music. The exception to that is the Tomorrowland track, where there is occasional dialog discussing what is happening on the journey around the moon, still a science fiction concept in 1956.

Don't get me wrong; the music is great, especially in the Fantasyland track where we are treated to selections from Disney's movies. However, that wasn't what I was looking for. I was hoping for more description of the park from back then and even more pictures. As it is, this is a good CD that will mainly appeal to fans who had it on record as a child. Those looking for a historic trip to the Disneyland of 50 years ago should probably look elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Finally re-released!.......2005-08-22

This is a re-release of an original LP from the Disneyland label. A historic record in for many reasons, it was originally released in 1956 from Disney's first in-house record label, and is the record they released. Basically it is an audio tour of Disneyland narrated by Walt Disney himself, as he takes you to Main Street USA, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tommorrowland. Many attractions he mentions are long gone, so it is historic in that sense as well. It is accompanied by music, voices and sound effects to make you feel as if you are there. The CD quality is very good, a faithful recreation of the LP, with the original LP cover reproduced as well. 35 minutes in length. Thank you Disney for unearthing this gem, a great CD and I reccommend. Since the title list above is incomplete, here it is again in it's entirety:

Main Street U.S.A.
Disneyland Theme - Walt Disney Narration
Meet Me Down on Main Street - Player Piano, Orchestrion, Marching Band, Calliope

Adventureland
Overture - Walt Disney Narration
Adventureland Boat Ride - Orchids in the Jungle | Monkeys and Hippos | Distant Drums | The River and the Rapids | Tribal Dances | Finale

Frontierland
Overture - Walt Disney Narration

Golden Horseshoe - "Slue Foot's Hoe Down"
River Boat Ride - "Farewell"
Finale - "Balad of Davy Crockett"

Sara Hickman's spring-loaded Toddler plays like a 2-year-old's trip to the zoo. What's around the bend is anybody's guess, but because each creature is as kooky or adorable or exotic as the one that came before it, you can hardly wait to get there. Think of it as a 31-track grab-bag: "I Got You Babe," its lyrics modified from "I got you to wear my ring" to "I got you to push me on the swing," butts up against "Storytime with Tish Hinojosa," a spoken-word saga of feline demise and rat liberation; the 1930s safety song "Remember Your Name & Address" swings out soberly on the heels of "Mr. Kawasaki (the Wok Song)," a gastronomic gross-out detailing a stir-fry gone wrong; and a hip-hop take on "This Little Light of Mine" thumps along in the hands of guest vocalist MC Overlord before this CD shoves off to Hawaii for "Pupu Hinuhinu." Interspersed are more spoken-word tracks (someone called Mr. Peppermint takes a turn, as do Sara and other friends), old standbys like "Freres Jacques" and "Duke of York," and, with "Waar Is Mijn Dulfje (Where is My Baby Bird)" and the Hebrew "Hiney Rakavet," there are some stabs at toddler world music. Where most CDs that string together snatches of this and that collapse into catchalls--nothing special--Toddler stands steady on its feet, buoyed by Hickman's wit, spunk, and way with a song. Her's is a voice as warm and inviting as a best-loved blanket, calling to mind Karen Carpenter in calmer moments, and what she chooses to wrap it around will leave moms, dads, and tots hoping she takes this boringly titled series, which started with Newborn, all the way past Tween and College Kid to Old Geezer. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars I love the variety.......2007-07-07

I bought Sara Hickman's toddler album after listening to her Newborn album. I'm an even bigger fan of the Toddler album. The songs are all upbeat, but from different musical genres. I walk around all day singing the songs we hear on the way in to work.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD........2007-01-09

This is a sweet and well balanced CD. My husband and I fell in love with it right away, and my daughter started to like it after it's played a few times. She can now sing a few songs from it. It's so funny to hear her sing the weenie man. :) Now it's one of our favorite CDs.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Kid CD.......2006-11-02

The warning i'm going to give is also the best reason to buy it! If you play this in your car for your 3 year old, you will never hear any other music besides this CD EVER again! Keep them happy! Buy it now! of course, there are one or two throw away tracks, but after the 20-something song, no one notices!

5 out of 5 stars we all love it!.......2005-12-02

We weren't surprised that we love it, as Sara does not put out bad albums. This cd lives in the minivan to keep my 18 month old twins and my 15-18 year old teens happy. The twins clap and sing and wave their arms to the music. Everyone sings and has their favorite songs, especially Weenie Man. Even on long trips, nobody gets tired of it. Even my teens' friends sing along with gusto. An amazing album from an amazing woman.

5 out of 5 stars We wore it out - have to get a new one.......2005-06-07

Fun for both adults and toddler. We've loved this cd and on a long car trip to grandmas (it kept everyone happy!), we somehow scratched it. I probably miss it more than my 2 year old. I was hoping to get a cheap used copy but obviously everyone else loves it too.

5 out of 5 stars My son's favorite by far!.......2007-04-26

I was fortunate enough to be introduced to this album while working at a daycare. My fellow employees would laugh (lovingly) at me while I belted out the choruses. Their favorite or course was hearing me sing, "I'm a nut, I'm a nut, I'm a nut, that's me!" (from The Acorn Song) :o)
I loved hearing this play in the background during playtime.

Naturally when my first child was born I knew we HAD to have this album. We keep it in the car. Even at a very young age I could tell that he liked it. Heather Forest's voice seems to have a wonderful affect on children. Case and point: when my son would be crying in the car, I would put on this music and he would STOP! Amazing!! He will be 3 years old in a couple weeks and it STILLS has that affect on him. Being older he doesn't CRY as much in the car anymore, but it's the TEMPER TANTRUMS that the music instantly puts an end to now. Don't know what we'd do without this album. Thank you Heather Forest!!

One last thing- one of the best things about this album has been my son learning the words and singing along. Too too too cute and he just LOVES it ! ! ! He looks so proud of himself :o)
He picks this album over all the other music we have in the car...even The Wiggles!! And if you are a parent to a toddler you might just know how amazing that is :o)

Trust us and buy it :o)

5 out of 5 stars Must Have for Excellent Story Times.......2005-06-03

Perfect for Pre-K to Grade 4 story hour. Kids pick up the chorus instantaneously. Three Billy Goats, Little Red Hen, Stone Soup are my cornerstones. I suggest reading aloud first. Then play the song and exhibit the appropriate pages. I use Janet Stevens' Three Billy Goats Gruff, Paul Galdone's Little Red Hen and Heather Forest's Stone Soup. Visit her website at www.storyarts.com for more ideas. I took a workshop with her. She's terrific!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fun music for children and their adults.......2004-01-04

We have had this recording on audio cassette for 15 or so years. My 18 year old son and my 14 year old daughter both remember it fondly as do my husband and I. At dinner tonight, we were singing "The Acorn Song" and it made me wonder if it was available on CD. I'm glad to see it is still available to families. The songs are both entertaining and beautifully performed. Although many are humorous, most are based on classic stories or fables so they aren't simply silly. Enjoy!

.....Another great release from Harry....

He says that this is his blending of American Gospel with his Indian Raga Blues. I didn't know what to expect, but the "gospel" sound is only really strong on one song (Sittin' on Top of the World, done in a light upbeat way). What is noticable, is the lyrics seem more upfront here. While Harry plays his usual tasteful mix of Lap Slide Guitar, Mohan Veena, Banjo, Harmonica and Tamboura, he also utilizes female backup vocals (rich and beautiful), keyboards, and tabla and other percussions, but puts these all backseat to supporting the songs. The result is a pop/R&B sound like Van Morrison at his mellow best. The instrumental fills are more Indian sounding (Mohan Veena slide and Tabla). These are spiritual blues or blues washed in light, the gospel part is that the intent is a blending of East and West spiritual roots music.

These are deep and profound songs but packaged and delivered in an easy listening way. As he sings in Stir A Little Breeze, "The world is a tale, told by a fool...Come see real flowers, of this painful world, their numbers few...This ways' not for the blind"

5 out of 5 stars "West Eats Meet" Is The One C.D. That I Take Everywhere!.......2004-12-05

....I first saw Harry in Grand Rapids, Michigan and was mesmerized by his sound, I now watch his tour dates and call ALL of my friends from the East Coast to West Coast to inform them of his arrival in their cities and towns. Harry is not to be missed! But, if you can't see him live "West Eats Meet" is a phenomenal piece of work and the biggest sleeper of the year! A must have in your music library!
