Customer Reviews:
Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

worth the purchase.......2007-05-14
I read a performance review of "Kingdom Come" in the NY Times, which stated that some in the audience wept and said it was the most beautiful piece they had ever heard. While this seems to be a slight exaggeration, it is indeed a first-rate recording. I have been familiar with this composer's music for 25 years, long before he became generally known.
I recommend it.
beautiful ethereal music.......2002-06-03
Apart from a measure or 2 here & there, the music on this cd is a lamp swinging slightly in fog & wind. The first piece, Kingdom Come, is has some great scenes Ingram Marshall happened upon & recorded & music he later composed for the concrete tape recordings to be in. He stresses that both the instrumental sections he composed & the tape are music; it's not just the music he composed with some tape sounds thrown in. The way they work together can be in turns deeply relaxing or creepy & haunting. But more relaxing -- even more with the few atonal or haunting shocks keeping the listener alert. Airy.
Then, the cd's next piece, Hymnodic Delays, is made up of 4 songs. The first 3 were composed in the late 18th century. The 4th, the 17th century. Marshall added reverb & echo to them. They're very poignant pieces to begin with; that was his attraction to them. When listening, you can hear that he echoes just the perfect notes -- just the ones that bring the emotion to its height. And the music moves. The chant-like effects of the echo & reverb add to the poignancy of the music. For me, the 2nd of these songs, "Broad Road," is the most enjoyable, because the voices are so distinct & the reverb impeccable. The final Hymnodic Delays song is the most bouncy -- a fitting climax after the much more somber previous 3.
The cd's last piece is a rescoring of the piece For Tropes for string quartet. The piece started decades ago called Fog, a tape of the Balinese flute "gambuh" & ambient maritime sounds such as foghorns & birds recorded at the San Francisco harbor. He "troped" it in 1982 when he added the brass parts. The idea then was that the timbre of the brass & foghorns would blend together as though of the same instrumental family. Now that it's "twice troped" with string quartet instead of brass, the different timbres of the piece work against each other. It's very beautiful, the different kinds of sound you find swirling & growing around you here. It feels very careful. The music is so thick. & the intensity/etherealness undulate just like the marina's waves.
Rather Exquisite Staid Classical Electronica.......2002-01-12
What rock have I been hiding under? Over the years, I've listened to a considerable amount of "new" music much of it electronic in nature. Yet, to discover Ingram Marshall was a complete suprise to me. I was roundly impressed with these slender exquiste combinations of tape, vocals and instruments. I am even more surpised to see that Mr. Marshall has a substantial back catalogue of work. Fog Tropes II is just sheer delight. Hymnodic Delays is fascinating. Where are those headphones when I need them?
It's all process.......2001-09-04
Ingram Marshall writes pretty music that is fine to play while cleaning the house or relaxing, but doesn't promote close listening. In place of soul and depth is process, and in place of expression is cleverness. The pieces on this album sound good, and mean nothing.
another triumph.......2001-07-27
Ingram Marshall succeeds again with his second album in a little under a month. He seamlessly blends electronic and acoustic elements here to create three profoundly moving works for varied forces. The title work, for orchestra and tape, blends Sibelius-like romanticism with eerie yet beautiful tape effects and is certainly the highlight of this disc. "Hymnodic Delays," written for Paul Hillier's Theatre of Voices, uses digital delay and echo effects to transform this small vocal ensemble into something richer and more powerful. A reworking of Marshall's famous work "Fog Tropes" ends the album, with the Kronos Quartet taking the place of the original brass sextet. More a re-envisioning of the work rather than a new arrangement of the same material, it serves as an excellent ending to a masterful collection of works. Marshall's music continues to set the standard by which all other electro-acoustic music should be judged - his music is never overshadowed by the technology it employs, with both acoustic and electronic elements working in absolute harmony. A real triumph.

Music for the masses.......2005-09-25
This disc is a bit different from many of the Cambridge Singers' discs in that it is exclusively secular songs. They have retained one of their favourite recording spaces, the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral, a structure well atuned to a capella singing (it has a natural nine second delay in the cathedral). This recording was John Rutter's first album on American Gramaphone Records.
--Music--
Madrigals are songs that have various purposes. They can be for private or public entertainment; they can be together with dramatic performances or played on their own. Petrarch is the inspiration of many madrigal texts, and folk songs also feature significantly. The English Madrigal School took full bloom during the golden age of Elizabeth; by the middle of the seventeenth century, the era of composition of the madrigal was essentially over. However, they have remained a popular pieces for performance, and many modern composers have arranged them, including on this disc Holst, Vaughan Williams and the Cambridge Singers director, Rutter.
Madrigals are often upbeat, happy, sometimes poignant, and lively. Some madrigals incorporate humour and jokes. There are exceptions to all of these, to be sure, including among the songs on this disc. Perhaps the best known madrigal in modern times, Greensleeves, is presented as the last piece on this disc, here in an arrangement by Vaughan Williams. There are lively emotions and sombre tones here, all sung with grace and consistent quality.
--Liner Notes--
Unlike many of the Cambridge Singers' CDs' liner notes, this one has a biographical sketch of John Rutter, a description of the setting at Ely Cathedral, a listing of the singers, and an essay about madigrals. Also unlike other CDs of theirs, this one does not include the words to the songs, a missing piece that would be helpful for many of the songs.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
This is a fun and fabulous recording.
Beautiful but perhaps overly solemn for some selections.......2002-10-19
The splendor of these arrangements and the setting confer on all of these traditional madrigals (and some newer arrangements: Side B is dominated by twentieth century arrangements) a certain solemnity and a certain stately pace (so the lyrics are not lost in the echo of the cathedral).
This leaves a strange effect on some selections, such as "Now Is The Month of Maying," which is about, um, springtime urges and here sounds oddly like a mass.
A tasteful and beautiful collection.......2001-08-21
This disc furthers my belief that madrigals are the best forum for a capella voice. Each song is unique and beautiful, and the sequencing allows a very smooth flow. Better-known works such as "Month of Maying" or "April is in my Mistress' Face" are perhaps most representative of the style, but included here are many lesser-known gems that you're sure to enjoy. The Cambridge Singers use their obviously well-honed skills to great results, from the more frivolous tracks to the darker, more solemn ones. Very highly recommended.

Space and Time.......2007-04-29
Easy enough to contend with, to differ with, to agree with alot of what's been said here regarding this Magisterial piece of work. But finally I simply allow myself to drift to flow to conjure other spheres with the tumble and patterns and bracing echoes of notes AND? It works, ladies and gentlemen, and it works incredibly well. Case in point 'Freeze Frame' All of you who have reviewed here, go "reaudit" this work NOW. Just allow it its space, its interiority, its special interlocution. And then email me about the experience. 5 or 10 or however many stars there may be. Thanks, Ralph.
Ravishing.......2007-01-25
I enjoy this CD even more than Ana or Anthem, two other great Towner recordings. From striking guitaristic pyrotechnics ("Oleander Etude", "The Hollows") to enigmatic musical meditations ("The Pendant", "Five Glimpses") to beautiful renditions of jazz classics ("Come Rain or Come Shine", "My Man's Gone Now"), Towner has all the bases covered here. A very fine recording by a modern master of the acoustic guitar. Contrary to what some other reviewers have said, I find the sound quality to be marvelous. Highest possible recommendation.
+ 1/2 stars...Wonderful Album by a Gifted Guitarist.......2006-12-29
This is Ralph Towner's 21st ECM album (not counting his albums with Oregon) and his first since 2000's ANTHEM. Towner, who was 65 when this was recorded, is a technical master of the classical and 12-string guitars. But don't let the mastery of his instrument lead you to think these are strictly clinical exercises in form and style. These twelve--mostly original--tracks are both warm and personal. This is partly due to the venue: The entire album was recorded in an Austrian monestary.
At the ECM website, Towner says, "It was a very different experience from my studio recordings. I'm playing without headphones and projecting the music into this very large space, very conscious of the natural reverberation of the church, and working with that, as part of the total sound."
The two non-originals on the album are standards closely associated with Bill Evans: Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" and George Gershwin's "My Man's Gone Now," the latter featuring Towner's impeccable 12-sting playing. "Freeze Frame" is the only other song that features 12-string guitar.
The accompanying 16-page booklet is woefully lacking in any detailed information on the recording--one page of tracklisting snd song length, and another page of production credits. The rest consists of photos--some of Towner, others similar to the cover shot. It would have been nice to include the personal anecdotes of each song that can be found at the ECM website. [For example, Towner makes this observation of "Oleander Etude": "In Sicily, where I lived for several years, they plant flowers along the highway, and oleander is particularly plentiful there. So when you're driving, you have all these beautiful flowers whizzing by you, all these flashes of colour. The rapid pace of this piece made me recall this image." For me, these insights add to the enjoyment of the songs.]
I've been a fan of Towner since his early days with Oregon on Vanguard. If you enjoy acoustic jazz guitar, you will find much to enjoy here. [Running Time - 43:54] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Ralph Towner is the Keith Jarrett of the guitar.......2006-11-27
I see Ralph Towner as the most creative and original musician the guitar has expressed since, .. I don't know... The only names that can match Ralph's originality among the most "recent" cats in my opinion are Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, Joe Diorio ... and that's it. They're very different musicians from each other but this is to say that Ralph is really one of the most unique and creative voices of the guitar nowadays. And comparing Ralph to Keith Jarrett is to me the rightest way to look at him and his music. He really try to be creative and to strecht out the limits of his instrument (the classical guitar mainly .. the 12 strings guitar occasionally). In the case of the classical guitar the limits are even harder to break. But Ralph does this on every album. He, like Keith Jarrett and few other musicians (Garbarek, Stanko etc) is the epitome of the ECM philosophy and sound. He is his own jazz. I especially love his classical guitar solo albums versus his more orchestrated efforts. Ralph's sound is fabolous and it deserves to be listened alone. And Ralph's guitar really doesn't need any other instrument. It is an orchestra in itself. In Time Line there is sure some natural reverb from the peculiar enviroment they choose for this recording (as a lot of people told you before me) but its not something really annoying. Believe me. As any other ECM album it is recorded very very well. State of the art. I love the atmosphere. About the music I can say that the compositions are all from Ralph's pen apart from a couple of standards that in Ralph's hands become something almost never heard before ... Talking about the overall artistic quality. This one is on the same level of the masterpiece "Anthem". And its a lot. How many musicians could release a masterpiece after another like Ralph does?
What Was Ralph Thinking?.......2006-10-21
This album is poorly recorded. Many people have praised this album's audio quality, but I am here to set the record straight: it's awful. First of all, there's way too much reverb when playing a huge open space like a church. If it were mixed right, then they would or should have been able to cut out alot of the church's natural reverb. It's a live setting, but it doesn't sound good at all. Secondly, Ralph is making alot of noise changing chords and switching to single-note lines. Part of the art of playing solo guitar is not making pick or finger noises when changing strings. Anyone who's into solo guitar and/or enjoys playing solo guitar should take that into careful consideration. Lastly, why is Ralph playing by himself anyway? He could play with almost anyone in the world he wants to, but no what we have here is yet another stale attempt to do something he's done way too much already.
I love Ralph Towner's music and his guitar and piano playing, but I think it's kind of ridiculous that he continues to do more and more of these solo guitar albums when he is better at playing with other musicians. I'll give this album 2 stars and those 2 stars go to Ralph Towner. Don't waste your time with this album. If you want to hear Ralph Towner play something fantastic with a group then check out his 1975 ECM album "Solstice." "Solstice" is truly one of the greatest achievements of Towner's long musical career.

Never mind the gay, just enjoy the music.......2005-01-18
If you are dubious about the "gayness" of this music, no worries! So are most of the composers on this disc. Strangely, despite the premise of the collection, in the liner notes most deny their music is "gay," even if their lives are. Aside from the Whitman texts and a few other hints, you would be hard pressed to hear anything here but beautiful 20th cen. American music. And it is a beautiful selection, nice especially for the inclusion of lesser known young composers along with Rorem and Harrison.

...Of the composers of note during the last 100 years or so (here in America) the vast majority of them are/were gay. This disc, with it's companion Volume 2 are a way to step into the gay sensibility a bit...
Well, I defy anyone to listen to Walt Whitman in 1989, by the late Chris De Blasio and have them tell me that isn't the heart-rendering cry of a gay man for his dying generation.
I don't want to give the impression that this disc is a downer. It isn't. But it is defiantly gay. Painfully beautiful, and at times downright challenging. Buy it. Stick it in you drive, and luxuriate in the fabulousness (and I don't use the "F" word lightly).
Art at its best!!.......2001-06-06
Absolutely wonderful music! I recommend this recording highly! The most moving works represented were provided by Philadelphia composer Robert Maggio and New Yorker Lee Hoiby.

Customer Reviews:
From one who loved Glorious history of Robert Shaw Chorale n 1957.......2006-07-03
First hearing this amazing impression of the current Atlanta Symphony Chamber Chorus under Norman MacKenzie, gave me such a sparkling crispness of "Ubi Caritas" from his first Touring performance of Durufle`...I was considering the possibility of another balanced CD recording with 6 pieces of the newer version of Atlanta Symphonty Chorus with older versions and the newest Choral offerings of The Morman Tabernacle Choir.
After several days of listening to the whole recording, I became thankful to Norman and Craig Jessop for their Joint Adventure in combining this first recording of Atlanta Choral Offerings to include the Older Vintage of Shaw masterworks, such as, Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms' "How Lovely are thy Dwellings!"
Even with only three Morman Tabernacle Gifts of "Take TIme To Be Holy, Abide With Me" and the traditional Hymn, "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" there seems to be reasonable balance to the new with the old and the more recent history of Choral growth alongside the vintage Robert Shaw Masterpieces... they include Faure`Requiem and Berlioz Requiem,++ Mendelssohn's Lift Thine Eyes and He watching over Israel!!
Most Sincerely from Retired Shaw Singer and avid admirer, Fred W Hood
