Editorial Reviews
Album Description
This is a collection of original compositions for the harpsichord composed by the great masters of the eighteenth century: Couperin, Handel, Bach and Scarlatti. The album begins with the haunting 26th suite or "ordre" of Couperin, written in the last years of his life. Next comes Handel's Air and Variations, nicknamed the Harmonious Blacksmith. This is one of Handel's most popular compositions, full of energy and virtuosity, taken from his fifth suite for harpsichord. Bach's 6th partita follows. This is the most intense of all the six partitas, and contains a fabulously intricate Sarabande. The album ends with three Scarlatti sonatas-little binary gems that contain dazzling fingerwork, haunting tunes and unusual modulations. Martha Brickman combines superb technical mastery with stylish articulation and great expressiveness. Her instrument, a French double manual built by Craig Tomlinson of Vancouver in 1989, is possessed of a rich tone well suited to her passionate rendering of this great music.
