Talk about MUSIC!!!.......2002-08-22

This masterpiece has been beautifully recorded. Macal is an incredible conductor that can change color with the slight of hand. I was introduced to this piece personally through performance. After listening to the recording, the attention to detail by soloists, symphony players and the Westminster Symphonic Choir simply moved me to tears. This is by far the best recording done of this work.

Composed for performance in England, this Romantic cantata sets a classic ghost story: A young woman is lured from her home and kidnapped by the demonic spirit of her dead lover. She prays to the Virgin Mary for salvation, and her simple faith vanquishes the evil spirit. Works such as these were wildly popular in England, with its grand choral tradition, but there isn't a single good one by an English composer in the entire 19th century. They were all imports. Dvorák's music is vintage stuff: tuneful, expertly written, and vividly orchestrated. It's not surprising that he became one of England's most popular composers, even if the glamour of works such as this has faded with time. Listen and decide for yourself if it deserves its current neglect. --David Hurwitz

Dvořák thought it was better than his "Stabat Mater," but "The Spectre's Bride," a cantata commissioned by the city of Birmingham, England, for its 1885 oratorio festival, hasn't had much of a hearing in this century. There is some beautiful writing for the soprano; this is one of Dvořák's most evocative compositions, and more than just a curiosity. This recording, made in concert in Prague, is well-played and, for the most part, well-sung; there are a few less-than-optimal moments from the soloists, and the chorus does not always achieve an ideal blend. Jiri Belohlavek conducts strongly and idiomatically, finding both the drama and the lyricism in the cantata. --Sarah Bryan Miller
