Album Description
The Mighty Five collected and used in their compositions much more foreign folklore than any other national music school. A desire to become a voice of their own people and to talk to the world on their behalf encouraged many composers to learn different musical cultures.

5 out of 5 stars An Appealing Balakirev Package from Chandos.......2005-12-14

A deal, this is, as far as I'm concerned. It comes into direct competition with a similar, two-fer-one deal from Hyperion featuring Evgeny Sventlanov and the Philharmonia Orchestra. The pairing is a bit different, though both offer the two symphonies, of course, and Balakirev's orchestral masterpiece, "Tamara." While Svetlanov gives us two overtures on Russian themes, Vassily Sinaisky gives us "In Bohemia," scored similarly to "Tamara" but more lighthearted and focused more on melody than on color, plus the Piano Concerto No. 1, here sounding somewhat more convincing than on another Hyperion recording with Malcolm Binns. While there is probably not much to choose between Binns and Chandos's house pianist Howard Shelley, Sinaisky gives the orchestral accompaniment more character, and the recording on Chandos is better as well. A curiosity in the Sinaisky set is Balakirev's "Overture 'King Lear.'" It starts out with a regal fanfare recalling the "Procession of the Nobles" from Rimsky's Mlada but then follows the sad course of Lear's story. For a work entirely absent from concert halls, it's pretty effective, worth an occasional hearing.

That leaves the two most important works, the symphonies. Some reviewers have found Sinaisky's interpretations uninvolved and uninvolving. Perhaps this is true compared to recordings I've not heard, for which I apologize. However, next to the Svetlanov First, which I have heard, Sinaisky's holds its own handily, having maybe a bit more atavism and rugged grandeur about it. Chandos's recording, too, is slightly finer, with just that much more heft and maybe a tad better stereo placement. The Second Symphony isn't as commanding as the First--as important a work in the history of Russian music as, say, Borodin's well-loved Second. But Balakirev's Second has its points, too, and its gentler, more refined way is captured well by Sinaisky and his orchestra. Again, the sound is top of the line.

So perhaps you could come up with more hard-hitting performances by shopping around, but to find all this interesting music in one package, well performed and stunningly recorded, is a deal-maker for me.

4 out of 5 stars Exciting and upbeat.......2007-05-01

Balakirev was one of the last great Russian composers of the Romantic era. He did not compose as many works as some of his counterparts, but those he did are quite good. This CD comprises some of his most famous symphonic pieces, and provide about an hour of exciting music. The themes are strong, upbeat, powerful; quite different from the drama of Glazunov's symphonies, or the melodic beauty of Tchaikovsky's ballets, or the Asiatic sounding works of Kalinnikov. This music is distinctly different from other Russian Romance composers, but is still great.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performances and compositions.......2006-07-09

When I listen to a CD, I look for a well performed, well recorded
overall experience, with great audio anad memorable compostions.

This release is the case, which is somewhat difficult to find.
I would suggest it's unique in the rarity in locating Balakirev's
works compiled in a long playing CD, such as this one vs.
intermixed in a greatest hits package, irritatingly with
other composers (on other releases.) We are spared that
aggravation ont his release, sold at extremely affordable
price.

I would suggest one start with Cesar Cui, to really mellow out,
and then perhaps, after the outstanding numbers of the piano
(on Naxo elsewhere), to move on to "Balakirev: Symphony No. 2;
Russia " and then, finally, to this release to wrap it up.

"Russia " and the other CD, is certainly Balakirev's forte,
however, this CD has memorably melodies and playmanship.

5 out of 5 stars Balakirev--Modest Cost, Excellent Performances!.......2003-09-10

As a musical Russophile, I really enjoyed this CD of Mily Balakirev's orchestral music. It is a treasure.

Igor Golovschin gives wonderful, committed performances of unknown and underrated works. The First Symphony is beautiful, with lots of Russian themes from Balakirev's folk song collection. You will hear pre-echoes of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade." The woodwinds handle the Russian motivic sequencing very well. This work is underrated, and Naxos offers an inexpensive opportunity to hear these works.

"Tamara" is also very well-played and -conducted. It is similar to the account by Evgeny Svetlanov (on a two-CD Melodiya BMG set called "Symphonic Poems from Russia," also recommendable, if you can find it.). Golovschin studied under Svetlanov as Assistant
Conductor of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, so this is no surpise. The full range of emotions comes across, and the orchestra plays very well as a unit.

It is also wonderful to have an orchestral transcription of Balakirev's piano showpiece, "Islamey," by Sergey Liapunov, a Balakirev disciple. The orchestra glitters, plays with power and conviction, and plays very emotionally and tenderly in "Islamey's" central section.

Overall, this is a wonderful CD to have in your collection, or if you are simply curious to sample Mily Balakirev's music. Either way, you cannot go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Treasures of high level!.......2005-07-15

This double album keeps for you interesting findings. Fantasy on Ukrainian themes is a magnificent musical work, expressive and deeply emotive; the Russian steppes, the Caucasian spirit, the exotic melodies. Reminds us so much to the overwhelming kaleidoscopic mind of Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov, undeniably the boldest and sophisticated composer in this genre.
Mili Balkirev 's piano Concert is extremely emotional composed by clever nuances. Michael Ponti has a percussive sound that fits appropriately.
The jewel of the crown may be this Nikolai Medtner Piano Concerto, a Russian composer that kept isolated from the musical flow in those ages. He was securely a potent source of inspiration for Alexander Scriabin. A difficult score loaded with dark poetry and elusive lyricism.
Christian Sinding is a worthy piece, and somehow is an extended Chamber work. Sinding was extremely influenced by Edvard Grieg, but there are curious involved motives.

5 out of 5 stars Sinding's/Medtner's Concertos will blow you away.......2005-03-08

Purchasing this set just for Sinding's and Medtner's concertos would be worth it. Beautiful and grandiose are two words that come immediately to mind. Sinding's concerto is a piece of music that has gone largely unnoticed, but it is by far my favorite piece on the album. The beauty of the melodies and harmonies are perfectly accompanied by the technicality of the piano. Grieg and Sinding were the two big Scandinavian composers at the time, and Sinding basically got shoved out of the limelight by Grieg. Though in my opinion Sinding's piano concerto beats Grieg's hands down. Even the finale is better (and if you've ever heard Grieg's concerto, you know it's got one hell of a finale).

But the two aforementioned concertos are not the only good ones. Balakirev's and Goetz's are great in their own right. Balakirev's being more modern, and Goetz's being more traditionally romantic. The Rhapsody on Ukranian themes won't delight as much as the other songs on the album, but it is good listen as well.

To sum up, if you have never heard of Sinding's concerto in d-flat or Medtner's 3rd concerto, then you must buy this album.

5 out of 5 stars Medtner Surprise.......2000-10-21

I bought this set on a whim, not being acquainted with any of the works contained therein. I had put the Medtner on as, I ashamedly admit, background music to a session of bill paying and letter writing. The 3rd Concerto caught my ear with its unique musical parlance, a kind of Rachmaninoff mixed with neo-classical influences that introduced me to Medtner's unique musical viewpoint. There is a place near the middle of the 3rd movement, when all activity ceases and the soloist begin to reflect on past materials that is other-worldly. The other concertos on the disc are interesting but at times hackneyed in their familiar tuttis and scale running. I'd highly recommend this Vox set for the Medtner and Ponti's extraordinary musicianship throughout. Listen a few times before making a judgement and perhaps the Medtner will overwhelm you as it did me. Think Rachmaninoff Third but with more restrained pathos but at times more cerebral pleasures-enjoy the adventure.

    4 out of 5 stars Eurasian music.......2007-06-13

Starting with the American occupation of Japan after WWII, the world has witnessed the birth of a new culture, a fuzion of Western (American or European) and Asian tastes. Whether it be in anime cartoons, videogames, movies, pacific rim restaurants, or alternative medicine, the past 50 years has witnessed a growing confluence of cultures across the Pacific Ocean. However, unknown to many, this benign blending of East and West is not new. Russia straddles both Europe and Asia and unnoticed by many, has been synthesizing cultural tastes of both for centuries. This fuzion flowered with the Romance period of classical music in the 1800s as many Russian composers took folk tunes from across Russia and turned them into symphonic masterpieces that clearly do not sound either European or Asian in origin. The tracks on this CD are examples of this. Balakirev was one of the great Russian nationalist composers, and his music, as heard on this CD, is beautiful, evocative, dramatic and carry a distinct sound. Both the Symphony Number 2, and the symphonic piece Russia, are unique pieces that are enjoyable to listen to. Balakirev only wrote two symphonies, and this reviewer prefers the 2nd one. This being a Naxos CD, the sound quality is flawless and the performances are great. I highly recommend this CD.

    5 out of 5 stars A Cheerful Russian.......2007-03-25

For many years, Balakirev was a historical footnote for me; I knew of him solely through reading about Rimsky, Borodin, Mussorgsky, etc., and didn't think very highly of him. Then one day, when driving around in Chicago, the local classical station played a piece that opened with the most expansive, Slavic theme--very Romantic, but not so much melancholy as endearing and cheerful. I was captivated. The movement continued in a very Russian Five type vein, but it was beautifully orchestrated and sounded like a more Nationalist composer's take on Tchaikovsky's "Little Russian" symphony. After the first movement the symphony launched into a rambunctious, and utterly divine scherzo--with a great stamping rhythm which seemed more robust than most Romantic Russian pieces I was familiar with.

Long story short, I listened to the entire piece spellbound, only to learn it was Balakirev's Second (!) Symphony. I barely knew he wrote one. This is the version I ran out and bought at Tower Records a day later. And now, many years later, this version, by Golovschin, remains my favorite version, for its slightly raw, but affectionate take on the symphony. It's a first-rate piece, in my opinion, and every bit as good as his extremely durable (but slightly less melodic) First Symphony. The Second Symphony was put aside when Balakirev became hyper-religious in true Russian fashion (Gogol, Tolstoy, etc.); many years later he returned, using discarded material from the First Symphony (the scherzo) to complete it. I've read Rimsky's disparaging remarks about the work, which is a shame, since it is cut from the same cloth as Rimsky's colorful works (but is far superior to any of his symphonies--save maybe "Antar"). The work is full of warmth, personality, and more cheerfulness than you would expect from a Russian symphony--perhaps accounting for its lack of appeal? The scherzo is the highlight, one of Balakriev's greatest inspirations; but also noteworthy is the glorious opening theme of the first movement, which is a keeper. The slow movement betrays Balakirev letting his hair down a little, since he is famous for warning his pupils not to write sentimental melodies in their works. Here, he simply writes beautiful music. The finale is fun and propulsive, but perhaps the least successful movement of the work; nevertheless, it works fine, and is played with spirit by the Moscow SO.

The big surprise is the tone poem Russia (or Rus), which is a major work. It's full of folk song quotations, but woven into the orchestral texture quite remarkably--chiefly through his adroit orchestrations. I almost like "Rus" more than the Second Symphony, though both betray a high level of inspiration.

This disc is a real find, and it's a great companion piece to the other Balakirev release by Naxos with Symphony No.1, his masterpiece, Tamara, and Lyapunov's orchestration of Islamey (which is superb). The only thing lacking from Naxos are some other overtures--In Bohemia, King Lear, and the Spanish Overtures (which were all recorded by Marco Polo, so where is the reissue)?

4 out of 5 stars Moody compositions, well recorded and performed.......2006-04-17

The rarity of Balakirev's works, makes Vol.1 and Vol.2 on
NAXOS clearly staples for whomever is interested in Russian
music, at the turn of the XXth century, over 100 years ago.

There is no way to go wrong with this release.

3 out of 5 stars Sometimes sleepy readings in colourless sound.......1999-08-17

My own benchmark for the symphony is Rozhdestvensky's 1960s version, which had drive, colour and a strong idiomatic feel. Compared with that, the Golovschin comes a distinct second best, although it is still a serviceable performance. I'm not so sure about Russia, which almost dies on its feet at one stage. The Mosfilm studio used for this series has, to my ears, a rather unattractive and bloodless acoustic, and this is reproduced quite faithfully on this CD, which at least has sound that is reasonably clear. Overall, I feel that this disc is quite useful for the symphony, despite the reservations mentioned above, but try elsewhere for the tone poem.

          5 out of 5 stars ROUSING!.......2000-06-22

I'd never heard of Scharwenka (and had a lot of trouble spelling his name when I tried to find him on Amazon) until the local classical radio station played this while I was driving to work, and then I had to have it. It's a wonderful and amazing piece, as is the Paderewski. Both are moving and dynamic, and you can listen to them over and over again. Wild is outstanding. A great CD!

5 out of 5 stars The paderewski concerto is wild!.......1999-10-11

If you like romantic blood and thunder, this is the place. The Paderewski work shows why it was once so popular. Great themes, awesome virtuousity. It cooks!
