    I have still listened to R&B songs for three years. I am very happy that there have already been many good works like this album. All songs of this album are perfect. Jocelyn Brown's singing overwhelms me whenever I listen. There are many compilation CDs of Inner Life, but I think that an original album like this CD has great power.

    I think this is one of the Nick and Val's two best albums, another is "Performance", though I love thier every albums.

    Seriously I think why they are so underrated.

    3 out of 5 stars Transitional Ashford and Simpson.......2001-07-26

    A Musical Affair strikes me as A&S's weakest Warner record. It followed the highly successful Is It Still Good To Ya and Stay Free. The duo seemed taxed by the prolific producing of other artists like Chaka Khan, Gladys Knight, and Ullanda McCullough. They also seemed to be striving uncharacteristically for a dance floor hit, which had in the past come to them effortlessly. In interviews at the time of this release, A&S indicated that they were seeing their best material going to other artists, like Diana Ross, and they intended henceforth to concentrate on their own albums. They kept this promise with the stronger Street Opera lp and the subsequent, stellar High Rise. The songs on A Musical Affair were often arranged like show tunes, with more bombastic productions and vocal stylings. Also, there was a sentimentality that didn't characterize their earlier, more candid and honest efforts. Songs like "We'll Meet Again," "Make It To The Sky" and "You Never Left Me Alone" show this side. I have to say also that I was jarred by "Love Don't Always Make It Right" because it contrasted the message of other A&S songs whereby effort, communication, and understanding cemented their relationship. "I Ain't Asking For Your Love" is probably the stand out track here.

    This is one of Ashford and Simpson's best albums. It has everything; great music, meaningful lyrics, music with a beat, and ballads. "Make It To The Sky" is one of my favorites. It sometimes brought tears to my eyes, describing so well how I felt. Every song on this album is great, and no Ashford and Simpson fan should be without it.

      Album Description

      After seven albums of original songs, Andrew Calhoun turned his keen ear for language to translating a set of dramatic folk ballads - some with medieval roots - from Scots dialect into contemporary English. Telfer's Cows is the result: a dozen ballads, some new variations on familiar themes and some great stories rescued from the dustbin of oral history. Among the standout tracks are Eppie Morrie, a song which escaped the folk revival, probably due to its adult content; and the previously unrecorded Telfer's Cows, dealing with a border skirmish over stolen cattle in the early 1600's.

      Featuring Tracy Grammer (vocals, violin), William Pint (octave mandolin, vocals), Felicia Dale (hurdy-gurdy, bodhran, vocals), Donny Wright (bass), Elizabeth Nicholson (harp, vocals), Bob Soper (fiddle, mandola, vocals), Joe Root (accordion), Kate McGinn (vocals) and Rob Stroup (vocals).

      I don't know if Andrew is Scottish by heritage, but it doesn't matter. He does a great job of interpreting these rare Scottish ballads. He worked with people to not only get the story translated for modern times, but also to get the pronunciation as close as possible to a dialect he doesn't speak. He put an enormous amount of work into this album and it shows. His website (www.andrewcalhoun.com), says he has workshops that offer cover song appreciation, songwriting, and traditional ballad singing. He has a discussion about the meaning of the ballad and comparing them to current events. I have music by other genuine Scottish singers (Archie Fisher, Enoch Kent, David Francey), and this is right up there with them. I love his finger-picking style of guitar playing. I imagine (not being a guitar player myself, I can only guess) it takes a lot of effort to master this technique and it shows he put the time in. He's a very serious musician and it shows.       I caught Calhoun in concert on the advice of a friend a few weeks ago and I was completely blown away. He just has this amazing voice. In fact if you listen to this CD on a cheap stereo you aren't doing it justice. I listened to it on my car stereo on the way home from buying it and I thought it was great, but it didn't quite have the magic of the live performance. Then I put it on the good stereo at home and cranked it up just a notch. Man it was awesome. I have to rate Calhoun as my best new find in a long while. I think any fan of Celtic music needs this CD.

      Andrew Calhoun has to be the only American who can sing Scottish folk music without sounding fake. His deep rich voice with its own distinctive quality that fits perfectly with the music. In fact it wasn't until I started reading the liner notes that it really hit me that I was listening to old Scottish folk tunes being sung by a non-native speaker. It just works.

      I believe this is his first major foray from his traditional urban-folk style but I hope it's not his last. In "Tefler's Cows", Calhoun has collected a wide range of rare Scottish ballads (some dating back to medieval times) and translated the dialects into (some-what) modern English. What surprised me was how well this works. The music retains the feel while being easier for modern listeners to follow. Calhoun's reason for updating the language was simple: these songs are stories, meant to be heard, enjoyed, and yes understood. It was a new experience for me to hear these songs this way, and I think any fan of traditional Celtic music will enjoy it.

        This is the lousiest sounding CD I have ever purchased.

        It sounds like it was made by some knock-off fake group with an amatuer band playing behind them, rather than the Original Sister Sledge.

        The "We are Family" cut, (which is why I wanted this CD), is so so poorly sung and arranged as to make me cry.

        $5.98 down the drain..remember...I warned you....

        If you buy it you will regret it....!!!!

        Sister Sledge is a tight group very talented.i enjoy there music.it's a live recording of there material plus a Chic Cover.it only makes sense since Bernard Edwards&Nile ROdgers Produced the Bulk of there work.not as strong as the Album Versions but still worth a listen.

        This is how the work gets done, on the Eternal Groove for this final installment of Philips three Gospel releases, culminating on the Best of CD. The previous review gives no propers to the Gospel work, but they just hadn't caught up with the Eternal Groove! Philip's singing for the Lord is GREAT stuff!

        I used to be an absolute fan of Philip Bailey's, and this is the first record that actually put me off him. Starting with this one album, Philip's career, singing and choice of material went downslope.

        His best Christian album was also the first one "The Wonders Of His Love" (1984), followed by "Triumph" (1986), which was almost as good. This doesn't live up to the other two, unfortunately. As for his secular, mainstream albums, "Chinese Wall" (1984)and even "Inside Out" (1986) are great albums, and even the 1983 debut album "Continuation" (never made available on CD) had its moments, but these go back quite a bit now!

        Nowadays, Philip Bailey has lost the brilliancy of his early performances. Even his work with Earth Wind & Fire doesn't live up to his early days with the band. Yet, anything is better than this record, so if you want to buy it, buy it only for the sake of completion (and pray that his rarer albums be made available on CD at last!)
