Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is awesome!.......2002-12-13

I love this bos set, especially the second one Edelweiss is simply great, it's filled with passion and truly shows the beauty of music. But if you had already bought Ave Maria and Edelweiss please don't buy this one, they are the same, this CD is just perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!!.......2002-06-07

Wow...That was my first word when I listend to this CD.

I like classical numbers more than like traditional songs of
other countries, so the 1st one was wonderful
(Of course as well as the second one.)

When you want to relax, you may choose the 1st one, but
if you want to be excited, choose 2nd one!!

You will feel as if you were out of this world.

5 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVE this!.......2002-02-20

When I received this album, I found that it was much, much more than I had expected. The angelic, pure, innocent yet DEFINED voices of these boys add the spark to your day. (at least to mine!)

The first CD is absolutely beautiful choral music which is really relaxing. I DO prefer boys' singing to adults, because it just sounds so much better.
When I bought the CD, I wasn't expecting much out of the second CD because I bought it for the first CD's sake, but the second CD turned out to be my real favorite.
Not that I don't adore the first one, but the second one is SO IRRESISTABLY CUTE!! whenever I listen to it, I keep on smiling and going "awww. isn't this cute!"
It is REALLY sweet and fun to listen to. I just LOVE this CDs and want to give 10 stars out of 5, but obviously there are limitations, so..

Well, if you like choral music, you won't regret getting this one.

5 out of 5 stars Vienna Boys do it again.......2001-08-18

Their performance is just superb. If you like classical music. I find this elevating my spirits.

4 out of 5 stars Wow.......2000-09-06

What can really be said about this two CD set except "Wow." The tone quality and emotion contained in the music is incredible, and I don't think there's another boys' choir out there who can match it. The rendition of Schubert's "Ave Maria" alone is worth buying the CD. Amazing. Between the two CD's there is a great variety of music as well, ranging from the soft, sad "Locus Iste," to Johann Strauss' polkas. There is a piece for every mood. These CDs are more than worth the money and rank among the favorites in my collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

This new release is somewhat mistitled: while most of the pieces are, in fact, from the Renaissance (or early Baroque), there are works here also by Samuel Barber, Poulenc, John Tavener, Bruckne,r and Gorecki. What they all have in common is their beauty and serenity. Perhaps the CDs subtitle, "Music for Inner Peace," also refers to a type of renaissance, i.e., spiritual re-birth: in which case, they're right on the money. The Sixteen, led by Harry Christophers, is one of the greatest proponents of this sort of choral music in the world, and they don't disappoint here: The Allegri "Miserere," with its wickedly beautiful ascent to high C by soprano soloist, is ravishing; Barber's own arrangement of his "Adagio for strings" for chorus (1967) is polyphony at its most "renaissance" without actually being so, and Gorecki's "Totos Tuus" is otherworldly in it mysticism. The selections by Byrd, Tomkins, et al., are, like the others, impeccably performed. Even an early piece by contemporary composer John Tavener, normally the master of excruciatingly pretentiousness, is lovely. This recording is a gem. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal Album.......2005-11-09

I heard this album played on my local PBS station one morning and was in immediate love. It's worth every cent you'll pay for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Fine Performances.......2005-11-02

First off, the title of this album is misleading. Only one of the tracks stems from the high Renaisance. The rest span from the Reformation period to contemporary. All of them are liturgical, all of a certain calm and meditative style--which could be inferred from the subtitle: "Music for Inner Peace."

But those are quibbles. The voices are excellent. The direction impeccable. The recording technique outstanding. And the program--given its self-immposed limitations of peaceful liturgical pieces--is very good. It was a stroke of programming genius to put the "miserere" of Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652) back to back with the "agnus dei" of Samuel Barber (1910-1981). The untrained ear might think the two pieces contemporary, even from the same composer, but for one trained in this genre of music, the differences of nuance are delightful and exhilirating.

I tend to prefer complete works, and listening through this album I sometimes wished for some livelier moments, but those quibbles aside, I am happy to assign a full five stars to this excellent recording. One of the advantages of a potpourri album such as this is that one gets to hear works from composers who might otherwise escape notice.

5 out of 5 stars Music for Inner Peace Indeed!.......2005-08-29

Though there is somewhat of a sameness to the mood of this beautifully performed and recorded album of choral works that span centuries, that uniformity of message is the creative force for this survey of music by various and varied composers. The works were selected to provide a parcel of time away from the noise outside the spirit, a place for meditation and solace so desperately needed today.

Harry Christophers conducts the inordinately talented Sixteen singers with support where indicated from early instruments ensemble, The Symphony of Harmony And Invention, in an organic, crystalline, seamless range of songs from the Renaissance to the present. Works include Monteverdi, Tallis, Byrd, Palestrina, Allegri and travel through time to Bruckner, Poulenc, Taverner, Gorecki, and Barber. Each work is lovingly rendered in perfect intonation and control, setting aside the 'individual' for the sonorous, anonymous, other-worldly sound only found in the great choral works through the ages. Christophers' tempi tend toward the languorous - the 'Agnus Dei' Samuel Barber set to his famous 'Adagio for Strings' has to be the slowest on record! - but this tendency further creates a sense of spaciousness found in the great old cathedrals of Europe.

For quality of sound and polish of performance this recording has already won awards. For the food for the soul that it provides there can be no greater 'award' than successfully fulfilling its promise as being Music for Inner Peace. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, August 05

3 out of 5 stars Too much choral can tire, but it's still good........2005-05-05

If you enjoy choral music this offering of 16 choral arrangements, conducted by Harry Christophers for DECCA won't offend. Indeed, you might find it rather enjoyable. The selections from various composers capture the essence of the Renaissance-Baroque sound as well as any recording I have head. However, it can, like any steady diet of choral, overwhelm and drag one down as much as inspire. That's not a comment on the quality or selection of songs of this CD as much as an observation about the genre itself. So, this CD has its positives and negatives. One minus is the orchestral accompaniment. When used, "The Symphony of Harmony and Invention" tends to be weaker than I would have preferred when listening to this style of music. Sometimes a nice contrast can actually elevate the tone and texture of the human voice -- and when it's missing, its absence is noticed. You will note for example in Monteverdi's "Christie, Adoramus Te" the orchestration is underplayed - subtle, almost not perceptible. This becomes problematic throughout the recording. Some listeners will like it, some won't. One of the features of this CD that I did enjoy was the synopsis of each song that explains its origin and focus. The notations are brief and to the point, but helpful in guiding the listener along from selection to selection. As for mood, well it's hard to pinpoint exactly: these are hymnals meant for a specific place - not necessarily one's automobile or living room, and hence, a listener may find it difficult finding a place or right time in one's home. If, however, you are in the mood for choral music, and you close your eyes and let your senses flow freely while listening, you might just get carried to that proper place and find "Music for Inner Peace" your cup of tea. The selections are thematic and even in moodiness. I recommend it with the reminder that it is a steady diet of solemn choral. It can be both tedious as elevating.

4 out of 5 stars Very relaxing!.......2005-04-27

I downloaded this album from iTunes, and I'm very glad I did. I was looking for some soothing music to play in the background while I try to grade papers, and this one did the trick. My favorite tracks are #2 and #5 -- both are beautiful songs.

If you like vocal music, particularly chamber-type music, then this CD is for you.

5 out of 5 stars All things old..........2005-09-26

This is a four-disc collection of wonderful pieces representative of the types of music from the Medieval times/Middle Ages. Gregorian chant has experienced a resurgence in popularity (indeed, it is almost new age), but in fact they are part of the ancient tradition of church music. Masses, folk songs, and motets round out the types of music on offer here.

The first two discs, entitled 'Monks and Troubadours', combine folk songs and chansons with Gregorian chant sequences - the first disc has chants for Palm Sunday (performed by the monks of Munsterschwarzach, Germany) together with songs performed by the Early Music Consort of London. The second disc incorporates chants that might be used at a church dedication (performed by the monks of Notre-Dame de Fontgombault Abbey, France) and songs again by the Early Music Consort. The difference is palpable. Gregorian chant varies significantly from the polyphonic songs of the troubadours.

The third disc is of motets, composed by Dunstable, Dufay, Binchois, Obrecht, and Desprez, some (but not all) of the great names in medieval composition. This collection includes a polytexted motet by Dunstable and more standard forms in which all voices join to sing the same words. Binchois' motet 'Gloria, laus et honor' derives from a Gregorian chant found on the first disc, with words still familiar in the modern hymn 'All Glory, Laud and Honour'.

The fourth CD inlcudes masses by Desprez and Ockeghem. Desprez is one of the greatest of the medieval composers, and his Missa L'homme arme is one of the better known; Ockeghem's mass here is one for the dead, a very common type of composition, here expertly executed. The final piece on this disc is a song written by Desprez in honour of Ockeghem, which despite not using typical mass or biblical texts, still incorporates the introit from the requiem, and as a mark of respect for the passing of Ockeghem, Desprez composed the music itself using all black notes.

This Archiv production is a stunning collection, great for the listener and great for the student. In one set, one has a broad range of music, spanning many types and hundreds of years. The production quality is very high, the music itself wonderful, the performances beautifully carried out - not much more can be asked for from a recording.

5 out of 5 stars THE OTHER SIDE OF BRUCKNER.......2005-10-04

Jochum was a prominent advocate of Bruckner, and whether or not there are other available versions of this sacred music I imagine he and his Berlin choir and orchestra will be the first port of call both for committed Brucknerians and for the rest of us. 7 of the 15 pieces here were recorded between 1966 and 1971. The dates of the others, including the final Psalm 150 in which the recording shows a few signs of strain, we are not told.

I found this a fascinating selection. The Te Deum is, I suppose, fairly familiar, the remaining pieces may be familiar to some. If you have good enough French, I recommend strongly reading the original text of the liner-note in that language. What startled me sufficiently to read it for myself was the statement in the English version regarding the motets that 'Their very structure places them all firmly in the tradition of Palestrina'. In fact all that the author says is that they tend towards the Palestrina model, which is a perfectly reasonable thing to say. He emphatically does not say 'all', he does not place anything firmly anywhere, and he does not commit himself to the belief that Palestrina wrote for the trombone. His point is simply that these motets are traditional rather than contemporary and romantic in inspiration, looking back to the unaccompanied polyphonic style of the 16th and 15th centuries via the ecclesiastical style of a later generation in which the voices were accompanied by trombones and by the organ. Bruckner's motets have little or nothing in common with Brahms's. In Bruckner's motets the Catholic in him gets the better of the German in him, whereas in his symphonies he is as exclusively German in manner as Brahms himself is, the Bach-inspired motets very much included. Bruckner's are smaller efforts, intended for actual performance in church I would feel sure, although I wish the liner had had something to say about this. The Berlin Phil is there in all its magnificence in the 150th Psalm (although the recorded sound here is rather less magnificent) and in the Te Deum itself. This is not a large-scale setting like Berlioz's or like Handel's terrific Dettingen Te Deum. It is about as long as Verdi's, although not in my opinion anywhere near as good. The parts for the vocal soloists are fairly small, and they acquit themselves perfectly, the choir is predictably first class, and my only real complaint is about a rather meagre-sounding solo violin in the Psalm, this being of course quite possibly the fault of the recording.

I did not check the translations systematically, and the only misprint I noticed in the Latin was 'et' for 'est' in the fourth line of the Vexilla Regis. Bruckner does not set the full text of the Pange lingua, but he does set the final two stanzas, the dreaded Tantum ergo familiar from some of our schooldays, set at times to some of the worst music in the entire cosmos. What I don't understand is what is wrong with a literal translation of 'cernui'. This is not 'on our knees' nor is it 'le front courbe', but literally 'prostrate'. Nor do I understand why the poet's metaphor of 'patibulo' in the Vexilla Regis has to be given as 'Cross' in English. That is what is referred to of course, but why not keep the metaphor in the English translation as in the German and French?

This sort of music appeals to me, partly from curiosity of course. It doesn't tempt the composer to excessive length, and I have to say that that appeals to me too. I recommend it to enthusiasts for his symphonies who may not know it, because it shows a side of him that is as true a part of his personality as those are. The recording is in general very good, despite some reservations about the last item, and the performances are authenticity itself.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful sacred music recordings!.......2003-02-22

Bruckner's sacred music is some of the music I hold closest to my heart, including the grandiose TE DEUM and the gorgeous motes. Jochum's interpretations are among the best- the TE DEUM is especially extraordinary, as is...well, everything on this CD. Every true Bruckner fan MUST own this CD...Marvelous!

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic!....mostly.......2003-02-02

These choral works are, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful pieces ever written. Bar none. They represent, to me, all that a choir can ever hope to be, magnificently displayed.

I have only two criticisms:

First, the trombones which accompany two of the motets are truly pitiful. They are inconsistent in their entrances, use WAY too much, and too wide, vibrato, and (under the circumstances, fortunately) are usually either drowned out by the organ or the choir.

Second, the orchestra is a little bit bombastic. I would prefer a more subtle and graceful interpretation. This may be in conflict with current accepted Bruckneran performance conventions, but I would remind those who set, agree with, or practice these conventions that Bruckner was a deeply religious, thoughtful, and subtle man. His Ave Maria (which I firmly believe to be the single most beautiful, holy, and perfect piece of choral music in existence, and which is proof of God's existence if anything is [however, that's a big if]) proves that much.

The Choir is GREAT, the soloists are great, the music's great. Great Disc, but not perfect. (What is?)

Go on. Get it. You know you want to.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent performance but start with Bruckner's masses.......2000-06-14

The mystical and original sacred music of Anton Bruckner is best conveyed by bruckner authority Eugen Jochum. While the Te deum and 150.psalm are almost as good as his three masses (available as an outstanding two CD in DG's series the originals - legendary recordings, again conducted by Jochum), the motets are much less powerful and less imaginative. I omitted the star for the quality of the music and not the performance. If you want to listen to Bruckner's sacred works, start with the mentioned CD of masses which like this CD features the great soprano Maria Stader.

The quality of soloists is fabulous and the chorus is strong. The string entrance to Te Deum always gives me the chills. Absolutely a wonderful addition to anyone's choral/sacred collection!

5 out of 5 stars Unique.......2006-02-07

This is early vocal music very much in the style currently heard in groups like the Hilliard Ensemble and Tallis Scholars. It is very spacious-sounding and solemn, which makes sense- most of the music that we have preserved from hundreds of years ago was written for use in the church. Fortunately, the gravity of the works never stops this set from being thoroughly enjoyable, too. Archiv's sound is, as always, very good.

5 out of 5 stars A classic performance.......2003-02-28

This recording remains a classic, even if (as Daniel Leech-Wilkinson points out in his accompanying notes) some of Munrow's performance practices may be disputed today. This is, quite simply, a wonderful performance and a terrific sounding recording (even after nearly 30 years)--and a wonderful way to develop an ear for the music of the 13th and 14th centuries.

Bruckner's sacred vocal works are certainly among the greatest vocal compositions of the 19th century; they shimmer in an otherworldly, almost immaterial glow. The Corydon Singers, under the direction of Matthew Best, have fastidious ears--their sensitive, vibrant sonorities are the crux of this altogether astonishing disc. --Joshua Cody

5 out of 5 stars St. Anton Bruckner.......2006-07-23

These wonderful pieces of liturgical music represent the peace and purity Bruckner found through his faith in God. The writing is at times simple...as it should be...but this simplicity only serves to accentuate the tranquility and beauty of these works. Bruckner the symphonist and Bruckner the devout Catholic. Much like Bach, Bruckner's music bears witness to God and I even find myself truly believing when listening. In this day and age of largely agnostic and God-less music, it is Bruckner's music which I find so dear and it will forever remain so for those in need, due to its intrinsic spiritual and faithful character.

Great Recording and Music!

5 out of 5 stars Superior Sacred Music.......2006-05-27

Bruckner is without doubt the best composer of sacred music since the Renaissance. Don't get me wrong, I love the sacred music of Bach, Mozart, even Verdi, but their works are more appropriate for the theater or concert hall than church. These motets could truly enhance the spiritual (and not just aesthetic) experience of a worship service, especially a Mass. Bruckner understood the difference between inspiring art and sacred art. What I just said does not apply to all his sacred music - his Te Deum is another example of "concert hall" sacred music - but it is certainly true of his motets and his E minor Mass for chorus and winds.

The performance on this disc, as others have said, is exquisite.

5 out of 5 stars Rare to find.......2004-08-19

There are not many records of Bruckner motets, so I was happy to find this CD. I bought it together with Naxos Bruckner Motets (ASIN: B000001415)

No critic about performance or recordings quality, but finally I am no singer, just someone who likes classic music and Bruckner.

5 out of 5 stars Review of few words.......2004-04-26

This is one of the greatest choral performances ever set to disc, if not the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Ethereal.......1999-08-11

This is an amazing CD. I listen to it in the dark with the phone ringer off so that I don't miss a moment of it. The Corydon Singers are perfect in pitch, blend, and expression. The final track, Christus factus est pro nobis, is especially moving. It makes you weep in despair and rejoice in triumph. Simply amazing; this CD is a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY!!!.......2001-03-03

If I had to choose one CD to spend a month locked in isolation with, this would be the one. Its varied but it flows well together. It's restive and soothing. The quality is beyond excellent!!! At the price, anyone is a fool not to own it, and give it lavishly as gifts. Its gorgeous, lush and fabulous! Everyone that hears it in our home, falls in love with it!

4 out of 5 stars Great music, Excellent Value!.......2000-07-26

Rarely can one buy so much good music for so little. This compilation features almost 80 minutes of high quality music.

5 out of 5 stars This truly is essential!.......1999-10-23

What a brilliant idea from one of our leading record companies! On this disc, they have assembled a programme of highlights from their vast collection of choral, vocal, orchestral, and solo instrumental music that is very satisfying. As with most CDs of this sort, it is a case of some tracks not appealing as much as others- I for instance am a lover of choral music so the gorgeous renditions of Stanford's "Magnificat" by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir or John Sheppard's divine motet "Libera Nos" by the Sixteen are obvious preferences of mine. However, whether you seek dyed-in-the-wool orchestral classics as Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony, less familiar works performed by period artists (such as "'E irei Madr'a Vigo" by ancient Spanish composer Martin Codax), or snippets of breathtaking instrumental solos (such as the rousing performance of Lefebure-Wely's "Sortie in E flat" which is sadly only an excerpt), this disc is bound to have something on it for you. And all of it is finely recorded.

4 out of 5 stars Exquisite music, but not the best recording.......2004-10-21

I bought this disc on the strength of the Penguin Guide's 3-star review. I am sorry to say that this was one of the rare instances where I could not agree with the Penguin's assessment. To be sure, the accoustic's great, and if you are a fan of the great English choral tradition you'll probably love this disc.

However, if you want a recording (especially of the locus iste) that has heart and presence, get the Jochum on Deutsche Grammophon. This Naxos was just too sterile for my taste.

5 out of 5 stars Heaven on Earth.......2003-09-29

I bought this cd because I wanted these motets all on one disc. Too bad for the other Ryan who put this disc away. The recording is of the highest I have ever heard from Naxos, and which helps even more is that it is recorded in a church (with fantastic acoustics), and sung by the church's own professional choir. It feels as if Bruckner has authorized this himself. The sounds that emerge are clean, clear and beautifully gorgeous. When I first listened to them, I really couldn't believe what I was listening to. I had to stop what I was doing because these motets moved me so much and to the greatest heights that I couldn't believe these sounds were created for the human ear! I also have Jochum doing them, and have heard the Matthew Best recordings but these spoke to me in such a way that I thought that I was listening to miracles! From what I know these are the only complete motets available on one disc. Experiencing these pieces is like being cleansed from all impurities. I seriously urge you to invest in this disc. (I hope the other Ryan reconsiders)

2 out of 5 stars Poor performance of Great music.......2001-12-31

Listening to Bruckner's motets can be very enjoyable. I purchased this CD with high anticipation. Unfortunately, the choir's performance left much to be desired. Poor tuning, strained voices, and a lack of attention to sonority and nuance encouraged me to shelve this CD and look for a replacement.
