Sebastian Weigle was a superb hornist before he became better known as a fine conductor. Trained at the Hanns Eisler Academy in East Berlin, Weigle used the constant vibrato that was considered simply a part of horn playing in Eastern Europe. This is usually a distasteful shock to our Western European, British or American ears, but not on Weigle's CD. Although almost constant, his vibrato is subtle enough to be only a coloring of the sound, rather than the main feature of it. The sound itself is very appealing, a particularly pure & light example of the soft-textured "B-flat" horn sound associated with Eastern Europe. His ease & control of production are a pleasure to hear, and even more so his musicianship -- lightness of touch, attention to phrasing, and evenness of articulation, sound quality & dynamics. If Brain's are the simplest & most charming, Civil's several versions have more panache, and Tuckwell/Marriner more assertiveness, then Weigle's way is refined & emphasizes moment-to-moment beauty of playing. This level of control is rare & hard to achieve (believe me -- I've been solo horn for Zubin Mehta & the Israel Phil for fifteen years & I can't play like Weigle). I recommend this CD (also try David Jolley's recordings).
