Wanted to try the "Mozart Effect" on my teenage niece who only listened to rap and teen-pop. She said the first time she heard this it was like electrical sparks lighting up her brain. She loved it.

I am already familiar with classical music. This compilation is very well chosen, edited and engineered. There are some less than common selections, so even if you already have many symphonies, there will be some different music on this CD. Nothing is too long. The tempo is both mildly relaxing and stimulating at the same time. Good for studying or thinking.

I bought this CD to play in my Kindergarten classroom. It is great for transition time - I turn it on to signal the children that it is time to clean up and meet me on the rug. They clean up, sit on the rug and close their eyes for a minute. This really works to calm them down and they seem to like the music. This CD is a must have!!!

I bought this CD just to have some classical music to listen to while driving across the deserts of the western US (classical radio stations are, alas, not too plentiful in rurual areas). It was on sale and looked like it would be reasonably good (how could one go too wrong with Mozart anyhow?). It also featured several selections I did not have on other CD's, so it would be a good addition to the Mozart section, I figured.

I had no idea a 'budget' CD could be this good. Whether or not this actually tunes your brain as the producers claim, the music is just stellar. Mozart was one of history's great composers, but the selection of works here is just astonishing in scope, composition, and variety. The performances and recording quality match the quality of the music too. This CD works as a "Mozart conoisseur's" collection.

While these are not Mozart's best known or most popular selections (The Marriage of Figaro, Ein Klein Nachtmuzik, etc. have to be located elsewhere), every song on this CD is a masterpiece -- living up to the descriptive line from "Amadeus" ('..Displace one note and you would only mar perfection...').

Even if you already have a sizaeable classical collection, this CD is a very worthwhile addition. At a bargain price, it's a real deal--almost a steal.

The Yorkshireman Reg Kell became famous for using vibrato in the classical world when it was unfashionable. He used it tastefully, and other artists such as Jack Brymer and Emma Johnson have continued to use it. He also had a series of tutorials with Benny Goodman (for Goodman's benefit) which led to Goodman changing his embouchure from the upper teeth on mouthpiece to the upper lip - as well as lower, -on mouthpiece, which perhaps in Goodmans's case was not a good move, as he had it right the first time!.

However these recordings originally came out a very long time ago in the early days of vinyl, and a re-issue is long overdue. Kell's excursion in to light music is interesting, though he stops well short of anything resembling jazz, although he had earlier recorded one record with Bert Ambrose's band in the 1940 which was the nearest he got, - but that is not included here. His main forte is in the works of Mozart, Weber, Beethoven and Brahms, but he also plays Bartok and Templeton. It shows what an accomplished performer he was. All were recorded after he left the UK to live and play in America.

This set shows his rightful place as a performer in the history of clarinet playing. He had raised the standard of the time, and had the benefits of improved recording techniques and length of play boudaries were removed with the LP record.

      I have owned this set for several years and return to it endlessly. The angel Mozart has been praised over the centuries-and deservedly so-for many works,but no one-no one- wrote for wind band quite like him,as this lovely set attests. There is the familiar "Gran Partita" and "Nacht Musique" here, as well as wonderful gems for all combinations imaginable of wind instruments. Especially superb are the divertimenti for oboe, cor anglais, clarinet, horn and bassoon. Mozart's music always "sings," but particularly so in these joyous, soulful entertainments. The artistic lineup is unbeatable too: The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, the Holliger Wind Ensemble, and The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. This is sweet, wonderful stuff.

      I place the Gran Partita, K. 361, as Top Ten Mozart, and it's played with such joy here, I was almost taken aback. I have three other versions, and this one just may be my favorite. One version is all shadows, which is cool, but oh! the joy in the present version. K. 375 and K. 388 are played perfectly too. The good thing about this set is they have a lot of hard-to-find pieces for wind. To me, Mozart was unparalled at wind writing. The textures! The tones! It's too good to be true. Hooray!

      This volume of the Complete Mozart Edition put togheter by Phillips is an extraordinaire set of wind serenades and divertimenti.

      The complete edition is a wonderful set of the first level and of superior performance.

      I strongly recommend to try to complete the full set.

      This two disc set is an incredible bargain, considering it contains more than two hours worth of wonderful chamber music by Mozart. The first disc features the famous Gran Partita, and also a short but delightful rondo for horn. The second disc has a couple of neglected but very interesting serenades for wind instruments composed by Mozart during the early 1780s. The rich and somber tones of serenade no. 12 are particularly memorable. The sound quality of these cds is first-rate. The extensive liner notes provide listeners with an understanding of the compositions and the historical context in which they were created. This recording will be a welcome addition to any Mozart collection.

      Mozart's 250th Anniversary is upon us and the entire music world is clamoring for performances of the master's beloved music. While his operas and symphonies and choral works and concerti are literally included in the repertoire of every music organization around the planet, some of Mozart's most genuinely unique pieces may go unnoticed. While everyone knows the big sounds, it is in the smaller works that Mozart's genius is freshly evident.

      Point in fact are the two wind octets (K 375 and K 388) lovingly performed on this fine recording by the Soloists of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe - Douglas Boyd, Christopher Gunia, Richard Hosford, Robin O'Neill, Mark Pledger, Nicholas Rodwell, Stephen Stirling and Jonathan Williams. Both of these 'serenades' are full of clever rhythms, harmonies, thoughts and follow-up developments that make them seem fresh every time they are played.

      The Octet here selected is a splendid group of musicians and play with the unity of thought that comes from a deep respect for the music. No, these works are not blockbusters, nor will they likely be found on commemorative programs this year. But these two octets represent Mozart at his most refined and in his most creative state. This recording is a splendid way to introduce the festivities that will echo around the halls: a birthday tribute to the quality of a genius. Grady Harp, January 06

      I first bought this title mainly because of my interests in Mozart's 3 Wind Serenades. This is one of the few titles out there that actually include all three (serenades 10, 11, and 12). Most other recordings only include 11 and 12, the two smaller serenades. When I first bought this CD, I half-way expected mediocrity because of its low price. However, I soon discovered that, while this is not exactly the definitive recording of the 3 serenades out on the market, it is nevertheless quite a jewel. The execution is precise for the most part, and the musicality is good. To top it all off, arrangements of "The Marriage of Figaro" and "Cosi fan tutti" for a wind ensemble are also included. Familiar with the "real" versions of both pieces, I nevertheless enjoyed the alternative arrangements. These lighter, "cuter" arrangements of the two famous operas are simply wonderful. This double CD set is truly a bargain!

        2 out of 5 stars Was that an oboe or a goose?.......2002-12-10

        Nice performances by the other players, but the net effect is a warmly balanced wind section ruined by oboes on cheap instruments. After listening for a while I got a headace from their shrill nasality. And as a general rule, ensembles should be supported from the bottom. The heavy oboe hand created a top heavy effect.

        It's nice to have all these works in one complete set, but I would look for oher recordings if I had it to do over again.

        But if you want to discourage your kids from playing oboe, get this set.

        As I string player, I don't familiarize myself enough with pieces that does not have a string part. But in search of the famous wind serenade in the film Amadeus, I purchased this box set. I really love the pieces and the players are excellent. I personally enjoy complete sets of composers' work because you hear similarities and differences throughout his approach to a specific instrumentation that will not be based merely on generalizations of one or two movements. Enjoy.

        I bought this disc in order to have all the great wind serenades (K388, K375 and K361) in a single set and (of course) for the reputation of the London Wind Soloist (A.Civil, for example, is wonderful as usual, especially in the divertimenti). Unfortunately, these recordings don't satisfy me at all; even if the interpretation could be good, the sound is quite sharp and bad balanced (the oboes are too close and I don't like the clarinets sound), and, finally, there are some technical imperfections. I suggest the Holliger Wind Ensemble (Hermann Baumann, Eduard Brunner, Heinz Holliger, Louise Pellerin, Elmar Schmid, Klaus Thunemann, Radovan Vlatkovic, Matthew Wilkie) for a very good recording of the K388 and K375 serenades. Anyway, this set is "not bad despite the flaws" as said by another reviewer and the price could be a real advantage.

        This is a great compilation of Mozart's wind music. There are definitely finer recordings out there, but the LWS/Brymer set is among the least expensive. With that said, I found that the ensemble, while starry, did not blend well. Perhaps the fact that many of these players were prominent soloists barred them from playing well as an group. The result of this is a more individualized and less ensemble sound. The recorded sound of this set is another of its flaws. While the close balance helps delineate the internal details of the music, at times the sound is a bit shrill. The oboe, in particular, was too closely miked for my taste. A better played set may be the Academy of St. Martin in the fields wind ensemble recordings on Philips. Be however, the Philips set costs 4 times more than the set here. And, a quick comparison of the two sets reveals that the Philips set includes two extra Mozart works that are not orchestrated for winds only (one piece adds a tympani, and the other adds strings).

        I found that, though the players' technique was sound, the blending of the parts and the intonation, especially, should have been better. They sounded like they were playing period instruments. Whether or not they were, was not given in the notes. Anyway, they lacked a sonority and tonal purity which is present in better recordings. Notably, the B flat serenade was a little raw sounding, missing the unadulterated sound which Mozart demands of his winds. Just look at the recording by Academy of St.Martin in the Fields for the soundtrack to the film, Amadeus. The adagio movement was far superior. To sum up, unless you find a more reputable ensemble's recording of these works, it is still a good investment for a classical collection.
