Most people known Carlos Chávez from his folk-tinged orchestral music. But he wrote solo piano music, too, and the pieces presented here--the Sonatas No. 2 and No. 6, the Seven Pieces, Ten Preludes, and Cinco Caprichos (Five Caprices) are as different from the orchestral pieces as they are from each other. The big three-movement Sonata No. 2 (1919) sounds almost like Liszt, and indeed Ignaz Friedman, its dedicatee and no modern, arranged for its publication in the early 1920s. The Sixth Sonata (1961), on the other hand, is so purely classical in style that it sounds for all the world like Mozart. If I had not known its provenance I would have thought it came from the 18th century. And a lovely thing it is, too.

The Seven Pieces (published in 1930, but written over several years) is a set of miniatures in a mildly modern style with meter changes and polyrhythms reminiscent of, say, the gentler Stravinsky or even Prokofiev. Then, the slightly bolder Ten Preludes (1937) are set in all of the white-key Gregorian modes and are highly contrapuntal. They call for rather simpler technique than the other pieces, but the arc they describe is quite emotionally satisfying. (Indeed, although I've never heard them in recital, I would certainly welcome them there.)

The Cinco Caprichos from 1975 are the last piano music that Chávez wrote. The five movements alternate fast and slow tempi and the faster pieces are catchy and have unexpected rhythmic and harmonic twists, but do not sound even the least bit Mexican. The second and fourth pieces are rather more sedate and have beguiling melodies.

The pianist, Hsuan-Ya Chen, is heretofore unknown to me. She is a Taiwanese who apparently was writing her doctoral disseration on Chávez's piano music, and one supposes she may record more of it. She has ample technique that allows her to play with admirable clarity and control. She is a fine advocate for this quite rarely heard music.

A fine release for those curious about this Mexican composer's non-orchestral oeuvre.

                  "Stas" Venglevski, native of the Republic of Moldova, who immigrated to the United States almost 15 years ago, is an award-winning virtuoso of the bayan accordion. A graduate of the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow, Stas studied under the tutelage of famed Russian bayanist, Friedrich Lips.

                  Stas' repertoire includes some original compositions as well as a broad range of classical, contemporary and ethnic music. He has toured extensively as a soloist throughout the former Soviet Union, Canada, Europe, and the United States including numerous performances with renowned jazz musicians and with Garrison Keillor on the Prairie Home Companion Show. One critic states that "the brilliant artistry and musical virtuosity of Stas afford[s] an expanded dimension in music and an innovative musical adventure to the audience."

                  Although, I would say, Venglevski's approach to his instrument--at least in this recording--is as Western as it is Eastern. To my ears, he draws from the French musette tradition, as exemplied by the likes of Gus Viseur, while maintaining a spirit of the gypsy influence of Eastern Europe, which stresses the minor keys, chromatic and modal scales and adds an unusual harmonic spice to the melodies.

                  If you enjoy the music of Baguette Quartette, Pearl Django, Gus Viseur, Tony Fallone, Ludovic Beier, Enrique Ugarte, Bratsch, and others, I'm sure you will love this recording.
