Customer Reviews:
another winner from Naxos.......2007-02-21
This is another winning compilation from Naxos. My only comment is to provide a heads-up regarding the track list in the booklet. CD 1 puts the Leonin "Viderunt Omnes" on six tracks, while the booklet leaves room for only one. Thus, add five to booklet tracks five through 21 for CD1 to get them to match. (I.e., where the booklet says tracks 15 and 16 are two versions of Josquin's "El Grillo," your CD player will show them to be tracks 20 and 21.) With luck this will be corrected in later printings.
Also, I would have liked the booklet to include the words, but perhaps that is an inducement to get particular CDs from Naxos.
As for the music itself--breadth of selection, musicianship, sound quality, all are excellent. A great collection!
awesome value -- 5+ stars.......2006-07-15
I'm really enthusiastic about these CDs and booklet. I've had it for a few weeks now, in which I've explored Medieval and Renaissance music much more deeply than this little book and CD set. Yet I'm very glad I started with these.
The selection of composers gives an excellent, broad sweep across several centuries.
But the booklet contains one of the most informative essays I've found about early music, and I've spent a few dozen dollars buying books. If the booklet were separated from the CDs, it alone would be worth more than $10.
In short, if you're interested in exploring early music, this really is one of the best places to start; the best place that I know of. I'm sure, at any rate, that you can't beat the value.

Customer Reviews:
Stunning & atmospheric.......2003-11-23
Many casual listeners of classical music (like myself) are often drawn to particular albums within this genre because of the timeless atmosphere and mood that we hope any particular release will encompass. Something that sounds like it could have come from hundreds of years ago, dripping in history and long forgotten places and people, and yet still saying something to todays listener.
I am not even a fan in general of brass quintets, quartets, ect, so if it weren't for a friend at work having purchased this CD, and my own being a major fan of the under-recorded guitarist Peter Maunu (who guests here), I would have never picked up this disc.
I've been buying just about anything Peter Maunu plays on after buying, and loving, his single 1990 solo album as well as his many appearences with Mark Isham (often on soundtracks), so I borrowed this disc to listen to at work from my friend. Then I borrowed it again, then again. Sure, I could have easily burned a CD copy myself from his, but these guys aren't selling CD's like they were Brittany Spears and I thought buying my own copy is kind of like a vote for these guys saying "yeah, this is a classic work". Besides, I even like the cover and the liner info (I just NEED to know who plays what on each track, who the guest musicians are, ect).
So you have this excellently recorded disc with the brass quintet with ever so subtle additions of Peter Maunu's guitar, some voices, and some subtle percussion and fretless bass from two other Mark Isham associates, Kurt Wortman and Doug Lunn. They all add to the great atmosphere (there's that word again) of this disc.
I've had my own copy of this disc for a couple of weeks now and it's the one disc that has not left my cd changer. I just change all the other discs around it it seems.
To top it off, I am a major Mark Isham fan and among all of the ancient works on this disc they do a version of Isham's "The Melancholy Of Departure" from Isham's "We Begin" duet disc with Art Lande.
I would recommend this disc to ANY fan of classical music as well as fans of new age music. It really deserves 5 stars and I hope this disc receives the sales numbers that it truly deserves..
I have no idea how my friend at work discovered this CD, but I sure am glad he did.
EBQ Takes the Listener to the Next Passage.......2000-12-07
I have owned this album for five years now and I never grow tired of it. The music is in turns solemn, majestic, soothing, grandiose and intimate. In the liner notes EBQ trumpeter Rolf Smedvig says, "This represents our latest effort exploring, with new arrangements, the music of the modal system. Modal music is based on scales which dominated European music for 1,100 years, from approximately 400 to 1500 and strongly influenced composers for another one hundred years."
In addition to the members of the EBQ, guest musicians are incorporated into the music on guitar, fretless bass, synthesizer, percussion and wordless vocals.
What I love about this music is its ability to transport the listener to another palce and time. Smedvig summed it up best in the liner notes when he concluded," The music is timeless. The old becomes new, the new old. Melodies never end, they only lead to the next passage..." Beautiful music indeed. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Absolutely perfect........1999-07-02
This is a wonderful album, which I can't recommend strongly enough. On this disc, Empire Brass succeeds brilliantly in melding the passion and splendor of early music with the eclectic trickery of modern world-music percussion. The arrangements are intricate & delicate, yet powerful, and the sound is pristine. Think of it as the Roman Empire making a techno jazz album. I even used it at my wedding. Fans of acid/techno jazz, world music and brass should not miss this amazing disc.

Customer Reviews:
Andrea and Giovanni.......2007-05-10
I can only say "ditto" to all the previous reviews. This recording has to be the best one of Andrea's works, which are all too rarely performed. Love the strong, low-register, at-times-blasting brass! Surely this is how the Gabrieli's intended the music. It makes the hair stand up on the back of one's neck! McCreesh's dynamic's instincts are spot-on and are a dramatic departure from his previous efforts. I cannot praise this CD enough.....
This CD won several awards .......2007-03-24
The other reviews here are spot on and i agree! This is a very special disc.
May i also add that it was awarded Record of the Year 1990 by ABC-FM Stereo
here in Australia and Gramophone (UK) 1990 Early Music Award.
I also suggest looking at abcshop dot com dot au for a superb selection of High quality classical music most of which is produced in Oz and not seen in huge quantities overseas. Amazon does have a few also. Type in ABC Classics
and browse through the selection.
Venetian Coronation CD.......2007-01-09
The item arrived in a good time and was well packed and in excellent condition. It was less than ordering it elsewhere. I learned of the music on PBS radio and was enchanted by it. Having a copy is a joy.
Wow! This is the best I've heard Gabrieli.......2005-01-19
The performance of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli is quite amazing. The acoustical effects of brass, organ and voices bouncing of the walls in natural stereophonic sound is really beyond description. A good mix of brass ensemble, vocals, organ and gregorian chant. I had not listened much to Andrea Gabrieli before I bought this CD and I have to admit that his contributions to this CD are very powerful.
The "omnes" at the end of the cd has extraordinary musical power. It builds to an amazing climax that has caused many a chill to go up my spine. On a personal note, I listened to this song on my way to see my alzheimer's stricken mother who had died just moments earlier. The finale to this CD represents the finale to my mother's life to me and will always be an important piece of music to my soul. I truly love this cd.
5 stars doesn't do this recording justice.......2004-12-28
There is little to say about this superlative recording that hasn't been said before. It represents the high point of the recording career of Paul McCreesh and his Gabrieli Consort and Players. This recording happens to be one of the best recordings of the music of Giovanni and Andrea Gabrieli available.
If you only ever buy one recording of Gabrieli's music, make it this one. There are a few good recordings of Gabrieli's music but none are better that 'A Venetian Coronation'. The recording 'Venetian Church Music', by the Taverner Consort & Players, is similar in quality to 'A Venetian Coronation', only Andrew Parrott did not choose to present the music as a recreation of an event.
The cornetts, Baroque violins, Baroque trombones and organs are all played with great style and panache in this recording. The choir features men's voices - from soprano to bass, and the sound blends beautifully with the cornetts and sackbuts.
Listen to 'Deus qui beatum Marcum' and you'll buy this recording.
This recording was a miracle and a wonder in its time and it is still the most impressive recording of its kind.

Superb Renaissance Masses.......2006-10-27
'MIssa Assumpta est Maria and Missa Sicut Lilium' are two Palestrina masses whose style stands astride the Medieval 'Old Music' and the Baroque of Bach. While it is not as grand or rich as Bach, it is more congenial than the rather icy feel of the pre-Renaissance polyphony. Like Poulenc's masses from 400 years later, it almost seems like a modestly endowed choir could manage these. The pity is that one would have a really hard time teaching them to an amateur choir, let alone the difficulty in squeezing them into the rather dry and traditional Protestant services, even the Lutheran ones which celebrate the use of music inherited from Martin Luther's love of hymns.
When I recently revisited another Tallis Scholars recording, I suspected my appreciation for the Palistrena may have been due to the 'Scholars' skill. Listening to this recording and others done by, for example, The Sixteen Harry Christophers reassures me that my appreciation is due primarily to Palistrina shining through the centuries.
A little piece of heaven here on earth.......2005-09-21
This particular Mass setting in honor of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary shows not only Palestrina's genius but also why he is considered by some to be the savior of sacred polyphonic music. This stirring production by the Tallis Scholars not only delights the ear, but also the soul with voices that border on the etheral. A must have for fans of traditional liturgical music!
Award-winning Tallis Scholars!.......2004-07-08
--Plainchant--
Plainchant is basically another word for chant of Gregorian or other styles, being monophonic and in free rhythm. The particular piece here, Assumpta est Maria in caelum, is a series of four verses. The first track on this CD presents the plainchant version without embellishment; perhaps as one would have originally heard it in a medieval monastery.
--Palestrina--
Giovanni Pierluigi de Palestrina is sometimes called the greatest composer of the Roman Catholic church. Born in 1525 near Rome, he spent the better part of his career in service to the church as a choir member, choir master, conductor, composer and school master. He was sought after by many churches, and sometimes his popularity and skill got him into trouble both with his clerical patrons and with fellow musicians. He was offered prestigious positions in Rome and Vienna which were ultimately withdrawn because Palestrina's salary and conditions requirements were too high. He had some influence on the Council of Trent's musical decisions for reform of the Catholic worship practices, and was involved intimately with revising the Gradual and produced a harmonised version of the Latin Hymnal in 1589. He died in 1594.
--Motets and Masses--
The first motet and mass presented here is Missa Assumpta est Maria in caelum. Masses for the Blessed Virgin Mary have always been popular, and this is one of the most-performed pieces by Palestrina, and has been from its composition, although it was not published in Palestrina's lifetime. It is, according to Phillips, a `positive, outward-going, major-key' piece that is one of the most significant compositions of the period.
By contrast, Missa Sicut lilium inter spinas is relatively unknown, little published and little performed. Phillips had very little guide to follow in performing this piece, so this work by the Tallis Scholars is a true original. The motet for Sicut lilium was published in Palestrina's First Book of Motets (ironically, Assumpta est Maria in caelum was not, but is better known); Missa Sicut lilium inter spinas was published in a late book of Palestrina, but is believed to be an early work. It is believed that great composer Orlandus Lassus sometimes performed this mass and motet.
--Liner Notes--
Being internationally acclaimed, the Tallis Scholars' CDs typically present their commentary and texts in English, French, German and Italian (together with any Latin texts); that is true of this disc. The cover art also typically represents visual arts contemporary with the compositions - here it is `Madonna and Child with eight Angels', a piece by Botticelli, who was a rough contemporary of Palestrina. One drawback is that there is little information on the Tallis Scholars or Peter Phillips in the booklet.
--The Tallis Scholars-
The Tallis Scholars, a favourite group of mine since the first time I heard them decades ago, are a group dedicated to the performance and preservation of the best of this type of music. A choral group of exceptional ability, I have been privileged to see them many times in public, and at almost every performance, their singing seems almost like a spiritual epiphany for me, one that defies explanation in words. Directed by Peter Phillips, the group consists of a small number of male and female singers who have trained themselves well to their task.
Their recordings are of a consistent quality that deserve more than five stars; this particular disc of pieces by Palestrina and the plainchant deserves a place of honour in the collection of anyone who loves choral music, liturgical music or Gregorian chant, classical music generally, or religious music. It is astonishing music, one of many Palestrina pieces the Tallis Scholars have recorded. It was recorded in 1989.
In the Palestrina discography's top percentile.......2004-05-17
Not only does this superbly engineered issue belong in the Palestrina discography's top percentile, it shows how greatly the composer's earlier idiom differed from that of his later - and better-known - pieces. SICUT LILIUM is dark, obviously elaborate, and written as a rather selfconscious homage to the Flemish polyphonic tradition. By the time Palestrina produced his renowned ASSUMPTA EST MARIA Mass setting, all need to match himself against Flanders's contrapuntal trellis-work had gone; the music, unfailingly radiant, sounds divinely effortless. The same can be said of Peter Philips's choristers: whose superb tonal blend and equally impressive across-the-barline phrasing, far from being studio artefacts, are just as splendid in their live performances. Absurd though it would be to purchase only one Palestrina recording, be assured: this repertoire has never been done better on CD than it is here.
The best recording of a Renaissance mass.......2002-08-16
In my opinion, this is the best recording of a Renaissance mass. The quality of the recording is wonderful, and the singing is also excellent. It is not completely authentic, however, because the Tallis Scholars do use female singers to replace the boys that would have sung this originally.
If you are new to this type of music, I suggest you try this cd. Usually people who listen to a Renaissance mass for the first time think the music is beautiful and are intrigued to have discovered a new musical genre. This type of music does sound something like a Gregorian chant, but it is more complex. It has some of the same trance-like quality, but I believe the mass is more interesting.

Customer Reviews:
Very beautiful music and an engaging performance.......2003-11-02
Much to my shame, I have to admit that I do not have many recordings of da Palestrina's music. When I bought this compact disc I only owned three other recordings. I have subsequently bought a few more. I am falling in love with this composer.
I played this recording out of curiosity at work. The music flooded through the sound system in the most wonderful way. I played the recording three times that day at work. I made sure that I didn't leave without it.
I am sure that both seasoned Early Music lovers and novices alike will find much to enjoy in this beautiful recording. I am glad, in a way, that I waited until I was in my 40s before I really started listening to da Palestrina's music - it has been worth the wait! However, I'd recommend this recording to anyone of any age, gender, belief (or lack of) or nationality. It is sublime and perfect music.

Customer Reviews:
One of the outstanding Palestrina recordings available.......2005-07-29
Ensemble Officium are based around Tübingen and Heidelberg in South West Germany. They were founded by Wilfried Rombach in 1999 and won the Guido D'Arezzo award that year. They have since gone on to record a series of superb CDs of Renaissance polyphony including two recordings devoted to Palestrina. The characteristic way they balance precision with beautiful phrasing always make them a pleasure to listen to and this recording of music by Palestrina is no exception.
This recording of the highly attractive Le Vergini by Palestrina may be about the only known one in existence. I certainly cannot track down any evidence of a previous recording anywhere. The work consists of Palestrina's setting of texts by Petrarch which were called 'canzoni spirituali' by Palestrina but his use of madrigalian techniques and forms betray the fact that they are in fact spiritual madrigals.
The other work presented here is the Missa Ave Regina Caelorum. The work is a later composition reflecting the influences of the Council of Trent with a reduction in the complexity of part writing to three parts - but even then he cannot resist throwing in a florid display of expanded part writing in five voices by writing a two-part Canon in Diapente in the tenor part in the concluding third Agnus Dei.
As always with Palestrina the writing is highly refined with every note calculated to perfection and never endulging in open displays of emotion.
David Vernier writing on Classicstoday really summed things up well in his 10/9 rating of this recording (10 for the performance and 9 for the recording):
"Although the Tallis Scholars remain the world's premier Palestrina performers, if forced to make such comparisons I'd without reservation say that Ensemble Officium is very close behind. I look forward to hearing more--much more--from this excellent group."
I in fact prefer their Missa Papae Marcelli to that of the Tallis Scholar while agreeing that this is one of the outstanding Palestrina recordings available today.
David Vernier found the recording acoustic to be slightly too resonant to allow all the fullest detail to emerge, but on my system I enjoy this more atmospheric recording that still allows full detail to emerge naturally. Many of the Gimell recordings can seem a touch too analytical - typical of their pursuit of clarity at all cost. So the excellent capture of the natural ambience of a church acoustic here is something that the Christophorus recording engineers here must be congratulated on.
The Ensemble Officium are an outstanding group and I hope more music lovers will go on to discover them for they deserve to be far better known than they currently are.

Customer Reviews:
"Kind of Blue," 16th-Century Style.......2007-01-07
Most devotees of the great Miles Davis album Kind of Blue know its story from the liner notes by Bill Evans: Miles comes to the studio with a pocketful of modal scales and changes, shows them to the illustrious group - Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb - and everyone simply blows, unrehearsed. The result is the consensus "most influential" or "most beautiful" or simply "the greatest" (and certainly best-selling) jazz album of the '50s and perhaps the entire post-World War II period (and some say "ever"). It popularized "modal jazz," essentially a modal "cantus firmus" ("fixed song") around which players shaped their improvisations.
Lovers of early music - and admirers of "the Renaissance Band" Piffaro - will know exactly where I'm going here. The precision with which early music ensembles like Piffaro perform their repertoire leads most listeners to conclude that every single note is scored as it is played. Nothing could be further from the truth. Generally, such pieces are also built around a modal cantus firmus and consist of ensemble members finding polyphonic, often contrapuntal, lines that harmonize or embellish the main melody.
Thanks to Guenther Schuller and other jazz historians, we associate "early jazz" with pioneering, pre-swing era, early 20th century Buddy Bolden/King Oliver/Louis Armstrong/Jelly Roll Morton "spontaneous composition" jazz music. That said, most music lovers know the familiar great players (and often composers) of earlier centuries - Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, etc. - were all prodigiously talented spontaneous improvisers. Few of their improvisations have been written down (except as cadenzas to their scored compositions), and we don't connect classical improvisation to jazz music. Nor do we generally connect it to "early music" - that is, music that precedes the Baroque - nor does it seem we should, really: jazz is jazz, and in a distinct way, uniquely American, and Renaissance improvisation is vastly less "free."
And now (I know: "at last!") the point: Piffaro's "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany" is a glorious tutorial is the Renaissance style of cantus-firmus-plus-improvisation musical composition and performance, as beautiful and surprising in its way as Miles' classic is in its. Each member of this Philadelphia-based ancient-instruments wind ensemble is a technically flawless, multi-instrument musician. And each of the thirty tracks on this generous CD builds from simplicity through several incremental layerings to a thrilling, gyring, soaring, perfectly harmonious multi-voiced conclusion. The scholarship of the group - on display in the attractive, informative notes - is impeccable and results in satisfying arrangements that run through the full diversity of early wind-instrument settings (with occasional percussion, lute, and harp accompaniments).
Moreover, as other reviewers have noted, those who think early music wind instrumentation consists solely of the familiar recorders, shawms, crumhorns, serpents, and the like will be stunned by the presence of bagpipes in Piffaro's kitbag. Bagpipes traversed Europe from the Middle East and wound up in the British Isles (and known to most solely via sonic clichés like "Amazing Grace" and "Danny Boy"). Here they're a force of nature, blowing out from a primordial past, pitched higher than Scottish pipes, in swirls of glorious polyphony. If you enjoy Celtic music, or bluegrass, or the Baroque, or the Hot Fives and Sevens, or the Chieftains, or the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, find a copy of this CD and let the ingenuity of Renaissance masters such as Ludwig Senfl and Caspar Othmayr wash over you via the vituoso improvisational playing of Piffaro. "Early jazz" indeed.
Stadtpfeiffer (literally, "city piper" or "city musician") is, by the way, still available; you can at least order it from the Piffaro website. I stumbled across mine while Christmas shopping; the attractive cover art caught my eye, I like early music, had some Michael Praetorius but little else from Germany, and so selfishly gave myself a gift, sound unheard. What a find, like pulling down a random book at the library that, once read, has changed your life. I haven't stopped playing it. Neither will you.
Lively, intricate and artful music from Piffaro!.......2002-11-25
"Across early Renaissance Europe," begins commentator Robert Kendrick in the insert introduction, "the best-known wind ensembles consisted largely of players from Germanic lands, who took their craft with them to Italy, Spain, and France." This CD features sophisticated, contrapuntal compositions of Senfl, Isaac, Othmayer and Finck, interspersed with delightfully direct arrangements of simpler tunes by the Piffaro musicians themselves. Alternating consorts of recorders and reeds are enhanced by brass, lute, harp and percussion. Core Piffaro members Adam and Rotem Gilbert, Grant Herreid, Tom Zajac, and co-directors Joan Kimball and Robert Wiemken are joined by guests Benjamin Harris on percussion, Christa Patton on harp, and Mack Ramsey on wind instruments. This is my favorite Piffaro recording so far, because of the variety of distinctive sounds and composition styles. There's a bit of everything on here, and all of it very enjoyable to listen to! Done in a similar vein is the group's 2002 Dorian release, "Music from the Odhecaton: Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the First Printed Music".
Exquisite!.......2001-12-25
This CD contains beautiful songs of German Renaissance. The music is performed in a very sensitive way. I consider impossible not to be touched by the wonderful sounds of the wind instruments. I highlight the 5 track, very beautiful. The musicians of Piffaro play the instruments with love and passion. The result is a great emotion.
It made me cry!.......2001-03-27
I tuned to the classical radio when I ran errands the other day and heard music like none I've heard before. Perfect bagpipes, yet I verified that it was indeed German Rennaisance music. I nearly had to pull over with the tears that came to my eyes!
