Great bluegrass music.......2005-09-01
I am new to bluegrass, but I find this band's music to be uplifting and very enjoyable.
Four heads, eight hands, one mind.......2002-10-26
Well, they're not quite going to displace Railroad Earth at the top of my Favorite Band Currently In Existence list, but they're getting mighty close. They've grown on me so much over the last year or so that I think they've passed the String Cheese Incident and moved into second place.
Much nearer to "traditional" bluegrass than either of those other two bands (in part because they don't use drums/percussion), the Yonder Mountain String Band plays like one mind with four heads and eight hands. Each of the four (Jeff Austin, mandolin; Ben Kaufman, bass; Adam Aijala, guitar; Dave Johnston, banjo) is just so good, and so in tune with the other three, that they sound as though they could play the phone book, without rehearsal, and make it interesting to listen to.
Fortunately, they don't need to resort to playing telephone directories, since all four of them also sing and write. I personally like Austin's stuff best -- one of the reasons I decided to review this particular CD is that Austin's stunning "Half Moon Rising" and "If There's Still Ramblin' In The Rambler (Let Him Go)" are on it -- but the rest of them turn out fine material too. (Plus there's the utterly lovely "To Say Goodbye, To Be Forgiven" by Ben Galloway, who also cowrote "Check Out Time" with Johnston on _Town By Town_.)
Another reason I picked this one to review is that it was produced by Sally Van Meter, whom resophonic-guitar fans will recognize as a master of the instrument (if they know any dobroists other than Jerry Douglas). She gives the foursome a clean, dry, crisp-mountain-air sound and even sits in on a few tracks (lap steel, Scheerhorn, and backing vocals, and she plays on one or two tracks for which the liner notes fail to credit her).
And the third reason is that Darol Anger joins in on fiddle for a few tunes. (Tim O'Brien handles fiddle on _Town By Town_, and he's great too. But I've liked Anger ever since the David Grisman Quintet's first album. And Tony Rice's _Manzanita_. And . . .)
But the main reason to listen to these guys is their tight, and I mean _tight_ performance. How they do it, I don't know; it's like an egg toss between two speeding trains. Anyway, call it newgrass, jamgrass, slamgrass, or whatever you want; these guys can cook. And you need to pay attention if you want to find out how _well_ they can cook; if you just let their stuff play as background music, it can sound deceptively laid-back. It isn't.
Then, too, you have to love a bluegrass band whose liner notes include thanks to the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa, Tori Amos, and Sam Bush (a sample culled more or less at random from Jeff Austin's thank-you list). Even if you think you don't like bluegrass, you may want to give these guys a listen if you like any of those other artists; they may surprise you.
If you're just now being introduced to YMSB, I'd recommend starting with this CD and following it with _Town By Town_; then move on to the _Mountain Tracks_ releases. But it won't hurt too much if you vary the order. Heck, you can even get them all at once.
YMSB goes from the Appalachians to the Rockies on Elevation.......2001-08-07
Sheer passion is clear as the voices of Yonder Mountain String Band interweave magically on Elevation. Western themes occasionally surface in the lyrics with stories of sheriffs and outlaws. Solos become a group effort, as Ben, Adam, Dave, and Jeff support each other marvelously with engaging interplay throughout. Elevation is filled with original bluegrass tunes as the music of Yonder Mountain swirls the Appalachians and Rockies together in a mind-bending mosaic unique to their to "drive without drums" style.

Elevation.......2005-07-09
Nightmares on Wax mingles chillout and funk in "Mind Elevation" the fourth official album by this one-man electronic band. As expected, it's blissed and tripped out, with plenty of inventive little flourishes to keep things interesting. The only problem is that it seems to be working too hard to please.
It opens with the terminally mellow "Mind's Eye," a smoothly sweet instrumental that might make you want to make daisy chains and smoke weed. Yep, it really is that chilled-out, even as chillout electronica goes. It's followed by a string of tripped-out, funk-edged songs, which are as sunny and meandering as a summer day.
Things take a sharp turn on "Date With Destiny," where the melody is reined into a more typical pop song, as Chyne B sings about how "time's on your side." She appears on a couple of other songs, the hip-hop "Environment" and the bassline-heavy "Know My Name." She sounds great in the first song, but after awhile her voice grows grating, and the "un-chill" music is alienating.
Fortunately, in the cuts between these songs, Nightmares on Wax (aka George Evelyn) sticks to what it does best: liquid, sunshiny electronic-funk. In these, Evelyn sounds right in his element, whether blending R&B beats with ambient sounds in "Humble," or the chillout techno of "Bleu My Mind." Basically, whenever the music and not the voice is the focus, things go well.
Nightmares on Wax first debuted as a duo, and then shrank to a one-man band, as it incorporated jazz, hip-hop and trip-hop into its sound. And "Mind Elevation" pretty much gives the people what they want and expect: Funky downtempo. This particular one goes a bit more on the side of funk and R&B, while still keeping a foot in the ethereal chillout.
The flaw of "Mind Elevation"? Trying to do too much. It strives to include a stronger dose of soul-funk, while adding in dub, downtempo, stoner electronica, R&B, and a handful of other influences. As a result, it feels like "Mind Elevation" lacks a central "sound," and is trying to cover all the bases and make everyone satisfied. Taken on a song-by-song basis, it fortunately manages to still be pretty strong.
Despite that lack of internal cohesion., the scattered "Mind Elevation" is still an enchanting mixture of beautiful downtempo and funk-R&B beats. A must-listen for fans of inventive chillout.
Nightmares on CD?.......2003-02-19
I love Nightmares on Wax... always some amazing stuff. Only problem is this CD has some really good stuff and some OK stuff... the begining of the CD seems weak and too mellow... it's only until you get halfway through when tracks like 70's 80's get's things flowing. Worth a buy to have in your chill collection but don't expect 100% out of this album... suprising since their other albums are pretty much at 100%.
i dig.......2003-02-12
Mind Elevation is my first taste of NOW, and it was definitely enough to make me want all their stuff. It's a great chill out album, though it has a little more R&B sound on some tracks than i'd prefer, but still that's only 2 or 3 outta 20. Easily worth the 18 bucks.
PLEASE LISTEN MORE THAN ONCE IF YOU'RE A REAL FAN!!!.......2003-01-04
okay, so YES! the first single "KNOW MY NAME" is arguably the worst song on the album....but, reviewers come on, did you really give this album a chance at all? i can't get enough of this album and play it constantly. "DATE WITH DESTINY" may just be N.O.W.'s greatest song ever!!! everyone that pooped on this incredible talent and album with a lame review should go get their hearing and brains checked! listen to tracks like "SAY SAY" & "THINKING OF OMARA" these songs are nothing but brilliant and instant N.O.W. classics. who cares if every song isn't a diamond with a few priceless gems on each album!!!!!! take a couple more listens, if you are a REAL fan, and behold the incredible talent. finally, "DATE WITH DESTINY" gets my vote for best pop song of 2002, hands down. and don't forget to wear your GREEN SWEATERS when you listen to this band because it's good for you silly.
!!!
the "Know My Name" video.......2003-01-04
I saw the video for "Know My Name" on a beta release of the monthly DVD magazine-to-be "Remote". Absolutely mind blowing. I dont bother writing reviews often but felt it necessary to put in a good word against all these other sub-par reviews. I have not listened to the whole record so I am limited to reviewing one song that got bashed so badly in these reviews. In the video the singer is pregant and wearing a homemade poor looking "Christian Dior" iron-on t-shirt and leather visor. Her and several other "real people" pass a microphone to each other as they subtly do there own thing(karate, basketball, track, soccer, etc.)against a black backround with a giant speaker. What I found to be important about this video was how "accessable" the people felt. One dancing girl was on the heavy side while being all the more attractive. Brilliant work I must say.

Customer Reviews:
One of my most-played CDs.......2005-10-13
This is one of my most frequently played CDs. I find it perfect background music for meditation, prayer, reading and other tasks, as well as a good CD that doesn't disturb people at work.
This is not intended to be organised as a church service or a concert performance per se, but rather, as the co-producer Carol Rosenberger states, 'this album is meant to recreate an experience many of us have treasured: slipping inside the doors of a cathedral and finding oneself alone in a vast, quiet space with light streaming through stained glass windows. The organist begins to play gentle music, and one is lost in contemplation...'
As a churchy person, I've often had the experience of working or sitting in an empty church while the organists or their students practiced. This recording in many ways reminds me of that experience. Of course, our organ is a far cry from the pipe organ in Atlanta's Cathedral of St. Philip, with over 5000 pipes (and our church does not have a 5-second delay reverberation, either), 4 manuals and 96 ranks. This Aeolian-Skinner organ is a genuinely stunning instrument, but as with any instrument, it takes the right performer to bring out the fullness of the sound from it.
Todd Wilson is just such a performer. His playing is solid and well-suited for this task, with occasional flashes of brilliance. Mozart's 'Adagio', Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Many's Desiring', and Barber's 'Adadio for Strings' (here arranged for the organ) are truly wonderful pieces. The programme here is a diverse collection of pieces from Baroque, Renaissance, and later pieces, including folk tunes and a few modern compositions. Todd Wilson is a church organist and music director at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland, Ohio (a city with not insignificant music resources and life), and is also head of the Organ Department at the Cleveland Institute of Music. He has had an international performance and recording career.
I applaud the decision to make this a double-disc set - the producer writes that there was just too much good music to limit the selection. Thus, there is a method to the organisation, given the availability of two discs. The first disc has more simple pieces, easily recognisable melodies and well-known hymn/sacred pieces. The second disc has a bit more complexity of music.
There is a booklet that is particularly designed for young people, so that they may become more familiar with the organ as an instrument, and this type of music.
This is a truly wonderful recording.
One of the best sets of organ works.......2005-02-20
This is a superb set of organ works. Strongly recommended.
Mystic!.......2003-12-28
The Æolian-Skinner organ in St.Philip's Cathedral, Atlanta is the finest example on Earth of eclectic organ...and the last- really-marvellous instrument erected by this firm. Flutes and Erzählers speak directly from Heaven...and the organ, despite electric, seems to have tracker action! Listen to Bach's BWV 731 and 648: they sound like played on a Silbermann instrument!
Todd Wilson is a delicate musician, a poet of the organ and a genius in the choice of the stops.
Buy also the other recordings of this Æolian-Skinner by Robert Delcamp (Naxos) and Alan Morrison (Gothic)...and don't forget that Michael Murray recorded in St.Philip's Cathedral for Telarc the finest rendition of Poulenc's "Concerto in sol minore per organo, archi e timpani" under the direction of the late Robert Shaw.
By All Means Get This CD.......2003-09-06
I found this wonderfully relaxing CD above and beyond my expectations. Do you enjoy organ music, then listen and explore the sacred music of J.S. Bach. This music will relax you: keep your muscles relaxed as you work on a time deadline for a large project, or doing some casual items around the house.
To be fair..........2003-04-04
The hiss that one reviewer refers to is undoubtedly the organ's wind supply. The wind can be heard on most organ recordings.

Completely Elevated.......2002-03-11
Being the second in the Elevation series this proves to be a commendable follow-up to its predessesor as well as its follower. With big name New Age bands like Mythos and B-Tribe it's hard to even think that this would be anything short of amazing. It's (in my opinion) a far better compilation than the legendary Moods series (though they're also very good). This is more refulgent as well as elevating. That's why the name is so perfect because it really does lift the spirit in higher places, putting you in the best of moods.
It opens up with some neo-opera on "Secret Tear" by the wonderful Aria (composed by Paul Scwartz) which is ensued by the jubilated "Compassion" by The Spirit Of Eden. That song is simply and utterly too beautiful for words, always putting a smile on my face. It seems to just erase all worries... The next song is "Suave Suave" by B-Tribe which begins and ends with spanish guitar strings, leading into some soothing, ambient pop beats toward the middle. The only "dark" song on here is the deep mundane chantings on Cusco's "Djebel At Tarik". However, Candice Pacheco comes on afterwards with her euro-popped "If Then..." which appropraitely closes the set with merriment...
Other standouts include Jeff Johnson's "Jasconius", Vanessa Daou's "Near The Black Forest", Enigma's "Shadows In Silence", Chorus Of Tribes' "Lullaby", Ascension's "Beauty In All Things" (which is another personal favorite of mine), and "June" by Mythos.
After picking this up I also recommend Elevation one and two... Or anything, for that matter, on the Earthtone label. You just can't go wrong with any of their compilations.
One of the greatest new age cds out there........2001-12-15
This CD is one of the most amazing new age albums I,ve ever heard. It's so much better than any Pure Moods CD. In fact just the first 30 seconds of Near The Black Forest has more emotion and sould than the entire First Pure Moods CD. Go out and buy this CD. It's an essential for all new age lovers.
2nd Time Around.......2001-12-09
I still remember how excited I was when I first set eyes on this CD after the bedazzling first Elevation CD. While the first one was a more Celtic album this one has a mix of other types of world music thrown in the mix. While some of the songs are Celtic sound this album has a warmer feel to it and a bit more stormy.
Secret Tear by Aria begins this aural journey with a kick. It's a beautiful song with amazing vocals with some xylaphone and some funky rhythms and some trumpets as well. Compassion by Spirit Of Eden is a New Age classic. It's a stunning almosr danceable groovy with a very Celtic pop feel and brings up images of traveling through the forests at dusk. There are some guitars as well towards the ending. Suave Suave by B-Tribe is a strange song with a creepy feel and some Spanish Flamenco guitars. At about two minutes into the song a drum loop comes in and it becomes a major note song with some violins. It then reverts back to a minor note and the beat fades out. Jasconius by Jeff Johnson is an ominous track with a Celtic vibe with some Norwegian influences. Near The Black Forest by Vanessa Daou is absolutely a masterpiece. It's an upbeat yet calming song at the same time with beautiful whispering vocals with pianos and beautiful guitars. Shadows In Silence by Enigma is a strange song with a sort of Gregorian Chanting feel but nowhere near as great as most of Enigmas other songs. This song is good anyway. Lullaby by Chorus Of Tribes is an upbeat song with a strong Native American influence. Beauty In All Things by Ascension is an upbeat and very pop-jazzy oriented song that could have made a dent on the jazz or pop charts. Trust by Patrick is a very ambient groovy song with a misty grey feel. While this is a beautiful song it doesn't fit with the rest of the songs on this album. Great though. Blue by Frank Van Bogaert is another upbeat song with a sort of electronic drum loop. One of the highlights on this album. June by Mythos is one of the best songs on here. It has a very upbeat sound but with a meloncholy feel and beautiful voices. Lovers In Motion by Jonn Serrie is a rather jazzy song with a spacey feel to it. One of my favorites. The Crown Of Life by Quinn is a short but cool song with some Gregorian Chants and some church bells to go along with the beat. Djebel At Tarik by Cusco is a very Gothic eight minute long song with Gothic chants and some classical sounds. This song makes me think of running through the highlands of Scotland with warriors with a fiery sunset in the background. If Then by Candice Pacheco takes some time to get used to but it's a great closer. It's an upbeat song with some Middle Eastern beats over some electronic intruments and a fast drum loop.
This is a great second addition to the brilliant Elevation series. This is my second favorite of the series. It was my favorite of this series before the fourth outing seized that title. This album still is an essential for all new age lovers.
Well that' all I can say for now.
Good Bye
Great CD.......2001-07-31
the whole collection all three are one of the best compilations of great artists, the music is mystical and definetly takes you to another realm of consciousness
Refulgent!.......2001-02-10
This is "the second [album] in the definitive collection of world-rhythmic and trance-ambient artists that are available in the genre today" (back of CD case). The opening of the album is actuated with Aria's hypno-opera track of "Secret Tear" and transcends into a pulsating trilogy of songs by The Spirit of Eden, B-Tribe, and Jeff Johnson. Next is a highlight of this compilation: Vanessa Daou's cadenced and uplifting track, "In the Black Forest." Then follows a relaxing song by the New Age masters of Enigma that is a "...dynamic blend of ancestral sounds and modern grooves" methodically arranged for contemplation. The disc continues with a solid strength in the marvelous music including masterpieces by Mythos and Quinn. This EarthTone New Age compilation resplendently concludes with a pleasingly aberrant song by Cusco and a rhythmic track by Candice Pacheco. This is the best New Age compilation since Pure Moods and I would assuredly recommend it for any New Age fan that enjoys artists like Enigma, Mythos, and B-Tribe.

Customer Reviews:
The First from a stunning series........2001-12-03
I remember hearing something at a bookstore and loving the music. So I asked the clerk what it was and he showed me the cover of this album. So I bought this album even though I only heard one song off of it and what a buy. I was amazed at the aural beauty that was coming out of my boombox when I played the CD.
Mars Lasar by Mars Lasar is a very haunting track that 11th Hour fans will love. It has beautiful keyboards and some Jazz guitar playing and some breezing at the beginnings and endings. This was the song that I heard at the bookstore that made me want to buy this CD. Heaven by Emer Kenny is a breathtaking Celtic Groove with stunning whispering vocals and a danceable beat. Sure-As-Not is a stunning piece from the Celtic masterminds Afro-Celt Sound System. It's a dark, Celtic almost wintery track with some ambience and plenty. The sound blips and the breathing sound effects at the beginning and ending are a perfect backdrop to this amazing song. Port Na Bpucai by Norin Ni Riain is a stunning Celtic New-Age pop song with stunning vocals and a wintery evening mood. Massai Rain by Miriam Stockley is the winner on this album. It's a techno dance song that contains African chants and some Jazz instruments. Usually I don't like world music mixing with techno but it worked here and this is my favorite song on this CD. Nomads by Govinda is a strongly Middle Eastern track with some acoustic guitars. I hate to say it but this song is a two and a half minute assault on my ears. Librarsi by Marcome is a beautiful song with vocals that easily resemble that of Enyas. Trail Of Tears by David Arkenstone is a somber track with a Native American feel and Native American flutes and a groovy drum loop. Forever by Nicholas Gunn is a breathtaking song that is like Mars Lasar but much slower, less jazzy and with a more Celtic feel and a stormy atmosphere. Circle Of Friendship by Joanne Shenandoa is a beautiful jaz-pop sounding track with some chanting vocals and beautiful piano playing towards the ending. To All My Relations by Stonecoat is a very new-age pop sounding groove with Native American chanting and flutes to create a stunning track. Prisme by Annbjorg Lien is a more Norwegian folk track with some Celtic feel to it. The flutes and the chanting towards the ending are breathtaking. Silence Of The Eclipse by Christopher Franke is a very haunting track with a very ambient sound. Definately a must hear. World Of Wonders by F.R.E.U.D. is a very romantic pop sounding with amazing vocals and an atmosphere that brings up images of two lovers running in the distance through large gardens in the hills. Nikki D by Harold Budd is a great closer to this CD. It's a jazzy ambient track with some bass playing and beauriful piano playing.
This CD is wonderful and is a great first addition to this killer new age compilation series. Just this album alone has more power to grab your soul than all of the three Pure Moods CD put together. I strongly recommend getting this CD. It's worth buying just for Massai Rain. And get the the other Elevation CDs as well especially the fourth one. And get the Earthtone Collection CDs as well. They are absolutely brilliant.
very nice.......2001-07-31
the whole collection all three are one of the best compilations of great artists, the music is mystical and definetly takes you to another realm of consciousness
Elevations: Jumping right in........2000-08-18
This is one of those c.d.'s where it takes more than one listening to get used to. However, there are three especially catchy tunes that helps this c.d. jump through the hoop. They are the beautifully euphoric "Librarsi" by Marcome with her sophistocated vocals, the curious "Free Fall" by Mars Lasar, and the tricky "Sure As Not" by Afro Celt Sound System. As for the rest of the c.d., there is light at the end of the tunnel. The Elevations series is designed to expose you to different types of music that you would not have otherwise been exposed to, and which you might actually enjoy.
Delightful to the senses.......2000-07-16
The first and the best (in my opinion) of these wonderful compilation cd's, although Elevation 3 has some great stuff on it too. I just couldn't get into Elevation 2 for some reason. I HIGHLY recommend Elevation and Elevation 3 for fans of New Age, who like a little Celtic and Jazz mixed in for good measure. I can hardly wait for their next one! For additional compilations such as these, check out "The Best New Age" volumes (six in all, I believe), that feature EKO, CUSCO, NEAL SCHON (great! -who'd of thought?), and lots more. I have 3 of these, all great. They may be out of print, but I think you can still get them here on Amazon or Cdnow, or your local used cd trading store. Enjoy!
The First Of A Five-Star Series.......2000-05-14
The CD starts out with the beautifully relaxing "Free Fall" from Mars Lasar, with expertly placed electronic harmony vocals which add a lovely touch. We then move on to Emer Kenny's "Heaven", which uses her lilting, subdued voice to evoke Celtic mysticism over a laid-back dance-pop beat. "Sure-As-Not", by Afro-Celt Sound System, is sonically similar but has more of an African/dance sound to it, and relies less heavily on vocals and more so on guitar. With the drums mixed down on the track, "Port Na bPucai" allows Norin Ni Riain's vocals to soar, and soar they do. This is a Celtic-flavored guitar-based track. "Massai Rain" by Miriam Stockley is a high-energy electronic-influenced African tribal-like song, with Stockley's gorgeous and powerful vocals multi-layered on top. Truly one of the highlights on the CD. Govinda's "Nomads" is a Mid-eastern flavored track with a very rhythmic drum beat. With Marcome's angelic voice, the next track, "Librarsi", is truly a gem to be noticed. A subdued but insitent rhythm and ethereal synthesizers transport you to a beautiful place inside your mind. David Arkenstone contributes "Trail Of Tears", which, even though it has a nice rhythm, tends to become overly repetitive. "Forever", by Nicholas Gunn, is similar to "Free Fall", but is much slower and dramatic, and more Celtic-influenced. "Circle Of Friendship" is a beautiful combination of Celtic and Native American influences by Joanne Shenandoah, and her sweet voice complements the mix. Stonecoat's "To All My Relations" is very simlar to "Circle" but contains less of the female vocal element and more chanting. Annebjorg Lien's "Prisme" is an enchanting mix of Celtic and Norwegian folk, and one of the more acoustic cuts on the CD. Christopher Franke's "Silence Of The Eclipse" sounds like it was lifted from the soundtrack of an 80s TV show. One to skip. The true winner on this compilation is F.R.E.U.D.'s "World Of Wonders", combining dance-pop and new age with Cora Donovan's soaring vocals and beautiful instrumentation. The disc ends with Harold Budd's "Niki D", a slow, jazzy number that is also one to skip--slow and uninteresting. With only two thin spots, this compilation ranks high.

Customer Reviews:
English violin music.......2004-06-08
Though Elgar belongs to the class of composers, like Mahler, Bruckner and Sibelius, known to the public today (and a mostly British public, save for the ubiquitous "Pomp and Circumstance" March No. 1) primarily through their large-scale orchestral works, he composed a considerable amount of music in other genres. The majority of the selections on this album date from the earlier stages of Elgar's career, when he taught violin and aspired to a performing career on that instrument. The exception, and the most substantial, though uneven, work on this CD, is the late Violin Sonata, Op. 82. The other repertoire is unambitious in length and variable in quality, the worth of a given piece being generally proportionate to its familiarity. Thus "Salut d'amour" and "Chanson du matin" retain their charm, though "La capricieuse" also shows that Elgar can be surprisingly adept at salon-style froth.
Although occasionally drifting sharp in high and loud passages, Lydia Mortkovich generally plays with elegance and sure technique. She and Julian Mitford, her able partner, strike some real sparks in the first two movements of the Violin Sonata. Overall they make persuasive advocates for this generally less familiar side of Elgar's art. It may be noted that the two Chansons, Op. 15, are more frequently recorded in their orchestral versions, so their inclusion in their original medium is something of a find.
