High Spirited Performance.......2002-02-21

The first 11 recordings from this CD are among my favorite of all guitar recordings, epecially "Sunburst," "Aconquija," "Verano Porteno," "Natalia," and "Cueca." Both the performances and the recording quality are outstanding. I'm just not that fond of the last 7 compositions (except maybe "El Colibri").

Great Performance of American Music.......2002-02-13

Williams records another great CD. From the thrilling opening, "Sunburst" by Andrew York, through Mangore', Brouwer, and Charlie Byrd, the music is very well-chosen and impeccably performed. Bursting with energy, South American dance rhythms or slow and melacholy, these are great pieces.

This music goes in a completely different direction from, say, Bach or Scarlatti or Albeniz or Tarrega. It's the American sound in many of its guises. Wonderful music. One of my favorite classical guitar CD's (up there with "Parkening Plays Bach" and "Songs My Father Taught Me," by Pepe Romero.)

Album Description

Lynn Harting-Ware's most exciting performances are captured here. The programme is an extraordinary blend of traditional large-scale works, such as Sor's Grand Solo with the sophisticated virtuosity of Dowland's most celebratory Fantasia. She plays a group of folksongs, set in a jazz style, with a vocal quality of great beauty. Her own composition, Variations on O Canada! sparkles with an effervescence of true virtuoso writing for the guitar. New musical fare is also to be had in Prelude and Fugue in A minor by J.S.Bach, arranged for guitar by Harting-Ware. Also featured is violinist, James Wallenberg, whose meditative performance in Chama 'the eagle and the plumed serpent'by composer Peter Ware, is awesomely otherworldly. This piece alone is a rarity, with such precise ensemble playing being just the foundation for an extremely expressive duet. The American Variations, a 5-movement duet, pays tribute to Blues, Rock, Bebop and Zuni Indian music. Robert Rollin captures these American styles with a quirky contemporary style. Canadian composers Aris Carastathis (from Greece)and Clifford Crawley (from England) make their first contribution to the guitar repertory with Four Vignettes and Phantasia.

Steve Novacek's performances of the pieces on this CD are the best you'll find. He plays them with warmth and technical brilliance. The Romance Criollo is one of my favorite pieces by Jorge Morel - a real masterpiece of modern counterpoint.

Clasicos de las Americas has Good Gottschalk.......2004-02-23

This six CD set has the Central and South American greats, but I prefer the North American who did some of his best composition South of the border. Louis-Moreau Gottschalk had the life of a modern day Rock Star. He is joined in this set by such prominent players as Heitor Villa-Lobos, George Gershwin, Augustin Barrios, and Carlos Guastavino. George Rabol is a favorite pianist.

With controversial lyrics, head bobbin' beats, and various guest artists this album American Famine has so many different flavors. From jazzy horns to classic piano to synth and strings, this album creates a new feel to hip hop. Profit's vocals are fierce, his lyrics are brutally honest, he speaks about how difficult the world can be. Shows so much talent and ambition. The album means a lot to me!

I had the good fortune to see the Santa Fe Guitar Quartet in concert, from the second row of the Myerson Symphony Center in Dallas. They are immensely talented and highly entertaining. Their mastery of the guitar is complete, and their understanding and love of the music come through clearly. They performed track 4 (Buenos Aires Hora Cero) and it was as good in concert as on the CD - outstanding. I highly recommend the CD and the quartet - if you get a chance, go see them. They are super nice guys and very interested in meeting fans (which is great for us fans!).

I had the occasion of listening to El Fuego Fatuo and Primavera Porteña played by this marvellous quartet whose members are Miguel Piva, Mariano Fontana, Néstor Ausqui and Eric Slavin. I must honestly say that I've never heart such an accurate and brioso performance! Those four guitar players are incredible arrangers and performers and really deserve all the best for their, undoubtfully shiny future. I just can't wait for Miguel Piva sending me the copy he promised me today! I really count on him as an integrant member for our OVCK (Orquesta Virtual del Corte de Krak). May the muses be with this incredible quartet- forever!

A southamerican pearl.......2001-05-05

Barrios is able to take you to the heart of South America with the beautiful pieces he composed, of which «La Catedral» is probably the best known, a truly masterpiece. It's a very relaxing Cd (sometimes touching new age), but by no means a boring one, since due to its richness it calls in wide variety of emotions, ranging from happyness to sadness, from introspection to extroversion, and in a very balanced way. It is hard to find Cds without annoying numbers, but I would say we're dealing with an exception here. Balbi's interpretation is full of quality. So if you're looking for a incredibly good CD outside the better known world of Spanish or Brazilian guitar sounds, do not hesitate and widen your horizons. This Cd will make you feel good, plain good.

Great music from Paraguay.......2000-06-14

Agustin Barrios was the greatest composer that Paraguay, a little country in the heart of South America, has produced, and perhaps one of the gratests guitar composers there has ever been. The music in this CD is beautiful, and Balbi does a good job performing it. As Agustin Barrios traveled through Latin America he incorporated the music from each region into his own, so expect to have a rich cultural experience when you play each track, all with a distinctive Paraguayan touch.
