Among the early '60s wave of American jazzmen entranced by Brazilian music, none proved more ebullient than pianist Vince Guaraldi, whose homage to a 1959 film retelling the Orpheus myth as an underclass Rio de Janeiro romance proved a sleeper hit. With Guaraldi's fleet, always rhythmic piano driving these concise trio settings, Black Orpheus remains a seductive delight, probing the then-exotic push and pull of samba with glee, but leaving ample room for more contemplative ballads that remain deeply affecting more than three decades after the album's release. Luis Bonfa's and Antonio Carlos Jobim's music was the seed for the project, yielding a percolating "Samba de Orpheus" and the haunting ballad, "Manha de Carnaval," but the album's best-known performance remains Guaraldi's own wistful and swinging "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." A surprise single hit in 1965, the song would later receive a more expansive pop cover, but it's Guaraldi's original that remains the superior performance--a wordless romantic reverie that speaks volumes in Guaraldi's tender verses, muscular choruses, and romping bridge. --Sam Sutherland

Hold the Peanuts.......2007-04-18
Vince Guaraldi cranks out music like few others. What makes him special? Aside from his trademark "crushed tone thirds," he delivers at multiple levels. I can be swept away by the joy, bouncing with the beat, or running to my piano room to practice when I hear this CD. There are no lulls. Guaraldi's playing, masterful as it is, is all about the listener's experience, not about the player's chops. If you've enjoyed hearing him you-know-where, but want to experience him without thinking of you-know-what, he brings the same kind of positive energy to this CD as he did to the characters of you-know-who.
Vince Guaraldi....A giant among jazz pianists.......2006-03-22
This item is absolutely wonderful. Wonderful interpretation of the Black Orpheus theme. I miss Vince Guaraldi since his early death. What a loss. But we have him on these old wonderful albums so we are blessed to be able to hear his fantastic talent. Try his Charlie Brown album & at Grace Cathedral. Two classics that I would also recommend.
More Goodness.......2006-02-24
Our family enjoys the Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack by Vince Guaraldi. This CD has several tracks that equal that performance
Fantastic Fate.......2006-02-17
A wonderful cd. Cast Your Fate to the Wind is worth the price of admission alone. A joy to listen to.
A Classic Album.......2005-12-25
"Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus" was the breakthrough album for Vince Guaraldi. It's a classic jazz trio playing in the then-popular bossa nova style. Mr. Guaraldi is a master of the piano, playing in a laid back, flowing style that is a joy to hear. People are most familiar with the mega-hit "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" but the other cuts are just as good and will haunt you for days after hearing them. All-in-all, a classic jazz album that belongs in every afficianado's collection.

George, Duke, Nat, and the Croz.......2003-08-31
In a way, this album is "My America, Part 2," like Monty's release of a year ago a celebration of the rich diversity and luminous spirit of American popular music--except this time the emphasis is on acoustic piano and straightahead swinging jazz. In reinventing Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" Monty wisely eschews the main theme and exploits the "blues" possibilities of the minor motifs. Both of the Ellington songs receive refreshing, revelatory face lifts--"Come Sunday" as a bright and light morning awakener and "Creole Love Song" as a simmering, explosive blues. Three tunes in succession demonstrate why Nat King Cole was once ranked as a piano player alongside Tatum and Wilson. And finally what more fitting way to close out this session than a Mercer tune made famous by the singer whose centenary is being celebrated during 2003?
In a musical climate of whims, fads, simulations and deceptions, it's nice to be reminded once again that you can always count on Monty Alexander.
His best in years.......2003-07-24
I've always wanted to like Monty Alexander more than I have. The Jamaican-born pianist with the impeccable taste, deft touch, and soft island ways has seldom seemed to find the right context to display his monster chops and Caribbean jazz sensibility.
Well, in this year of outstanding jazz releases, he's found it, and in spades. A kind of tour through popular jazz styles, Impressions in Blue succeeds because the leader has such a thorough knowledge of the various jazz sub-genres that he's able to find just the right approach to transform each from the mundane into the sublime. A deep knowledge of and love for the blues also helps a lot.
Divided into four parts with a tongue-in-cheek coda, "I'm and Old Cowhand," Impressions opens with two classical pieces: "Blue Rhapsody," a reworking of Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" (aka, the United Airlines theme), and the Rodrigo piece, "En Aranjues con tu Amor." These, for me, work least well, partly because they're too straightforward. But they're still beautifully and loving rendered.
Next come a pair of Ellington tunes, "Come Sunday/David Danced" and "Creole Love Call." Alexander has a real feel for the Duke's music, he and finds the exact right approach to "Come Sunday"--deft, danceable, and s(w)inging, with just a touch of blues in the background, especially in the arco bass opening. With "Creole Love Call," were in the very heart of the blues. Taken at a very leisurely pace, drenched in melancholy, Alexander brilliantly plumbs its heartbreak.
Which brings us to the heart of the matter--three tunes under the heading Where the Trade Winds Blow. As great an interpreter of Duke as Alexander is, this middle passage is where he really shines. "Accompong," with its tricky rhythmic shifts, swinging vibe, and true jazz sensibility shows why Alexander is perhaps the premier interpreter of Caribbean jazz on the scene today. With "Pointe-A-Pitre" we're in the heart of the tropics. An impossibly catchy Calypso, with subtle blues underpinnings, this pieces just wafts along like a soft breeze through coconut palms. "Eleuthra," named for an island in the Bahamas, continues the Caribbean vibe. With these three numbers, the ever-present blues are successfully chased into the background. It would be a real treat to hear this band do an entire disc of this mesmerizing island jazz.
Things change gears again with King Cole Reflections, three tunes dedicated to the late, great Nat "King" Cole, whom the headliner recalls being blown away by when he heard him in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica, when he was 12. The trio changes slightly to match Cole's original outfit, with the great John Pizzarelli sitting in on electric guitar replacing Mark Taylor on drums. This section--with a deep swing groove, lots of quotes from other tunes, and drenched in the blues--is pure fun. Pizzarelli, a player who absolutely understands the genius of swing, was an inspired choice for the guitar chair, comping effortlessly and throwing off inspired single-line runs.
In a year of great jazz, and especially inspired piano trios, this disc casts a long shadow. A pure delight.

Where's The Traps?.......2004-12-19
For some reason, Vince Garualdi loved to record jazz albums two ways in which I can stand, but do not prefer.
One: Playing latin. He has numerous latin and bossa nova albums. They're ok, but I mean you really have to love bossa nova music. It's very close to the border line, of being very elevator. Theres hardly any flair, or excitement as in straight ahead jazz.
Two: Recording without a drummer. I am a drummer and look for drummers especially. It also livens up the music.
That said, this is an ok jazz release. Gauraldi only had about four really great albums. And they were his only four straight ahead releases. If he put his time and recording to straight ahead jazz, and with a drummer, he would be, my all time favorite jazz musician! This is nice background music. It is in the guitar-bass-piano format, something a drummer cannot quite bring himself to appreciate.
If all Gauraldi's albums sounded like Orpheus, and his Peanuts soundtracks, he would be one of the greatest players ever!
Before the Magic.......2002-07-20
Though largely ignored by critics, Vince Guaraldi developed one of the most distinctive, original, and joyous sounds in jazz piano. (Perhaps only Thelonious Monk is as instantly recognizable.)
However, Guaraldi did not really find his "voice" on the instrument until 1962's "Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus." His prior recordings, "Vince Guaraldi Trio," "Flower Is a Lovesome Thing," and "Jazz Impressions" (which is really just a sampler of the two former works) are simply unexceptional West Coast jazz. The lightness of mood on these three early albums is further accentuated by the absence of a drummer.
Vince Guaraldi has often been labelled "easy listening." For the most part, that characterization is unfair, and reflects the accessibility of his work rather than its artistic merit. On these first three albums, however, the characterization is very apt.
Rainy day music.......1998-09-18
This isn't the flashy upbeat Peanuts music that most people think of when they think of Vince Guaraldi. Rather, this is very mellow, and at times melancholy, music. It is perfect to pop in your car's CD player on a rainy day, or any other time when you want to escape the hassles of the world.
