5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!!.......2005-04-01

This was a pleasure to listen to. The music chosen for the recording brings out the soulful cello sound played so wonderfully by Sara Sant'Ambrogio, and the piano part played so skillfully by Anyssa Neumann rounds it all out. It puts you in another dreamy world!

5 out of 5 stars Check This One Out!!!.......2004-10-24

"Dreaming" is the latest CD from Sara Sant' Ambrogio, featuring up and coming rising star Anyssa Neumann on the piano. Please start the tour soon and let me know when and where to come!!!

Congratulations to everyone that played a play on this CD. The time and effort is well worth it shows. Continued good look in everything that each and every one of you chooses to do.

5 out of 5 stars First Loves.......2004-09-25

This newly released CD is a winner! As Grammy-winning cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio writes, she selected those pieces that first made her fall in love with the voice of the cello, and she plays them with tenderness, passion, mastery, and wistfulness, stirring the listeners' imagination and taking us back to a simpler time. In addition to the old favorites, such as Albinoni's "Adagio" and Saint-Saens "The Swan," she bridges the centuries with Gershwin's Summertime and two contemporary compositions by Paul Cantelon, melding the textures into a cohesive yet varied tapestry of music. The piano accompaniment, played skillfully by the rising pianist Anyssa Neumann, gently sustains the rich strains of the cello, providing a perfect balance of voices. Listen to this recording with your eyes closed and let your memory and the exquisite artistry of these two young musicians take you back to your first loves.

5 out of 5 stars Eroica Trio, Classical Music Angels.......2006-03-19

The album, "Best of Eroica," demonstrates with heavenly beauty this group's musicality, technical skill, and deep understanding of the music they've chosen. This album is a "must" for anyone who enjoys piano trios and wants to relax surrounded by transporting sound.

4 out of 5 stars Spirited style in a generous album--4.5 stars.......2005-12-09

This generous album (nearly 75 minutes long) contains 14 selections from the award-winning trio's other CDs. Thus, the range of music is quite wide. The artists (Erika Nickrenz--piano, Adela Pena-violin, & Sara Sant'Ambrogio--cello), though accomplished soloists, meld their playing beautifully. The Albinoni here is the shortest of the four versions in my collection--played with spirit. The Vivaldi demonstrates their virtuosity. I think the viola shines in Brahm's lullaby. The Piazzolla pieces remind me of the concert at which I heard them play; it was spectacular. Still, a few of the pieces are not particularly to my liking--though they are played well. Also, as a baroque fan I'd like to see some Telemann, Bach, &/or Handel. Most of the pieces are very lively--not too relaxing or useful for meditation--but great for listening. But then, as a trio, they are chamber music oriented. Still, IMHO the order of pieces on the album could be improved. Overall, it's a very fine album though I like the baroque one better--just a personal preference, of course.

5 out of 5 stars Electrifying.......2005-08-26

I saw them live a few years ago, and was captivated by their group chemistry and technical precision. One of my favorite modern classical groups.

5 out of 5 stars Better still, buy the other CDs.......2005-05-27

As a compilation, the ladies have selected a few cuts from each of their 6 CDs to give any listener new to the Eroica Trio--named in homage to Beethoven's 3d "Eroica" Symphony, not the crass misreading offered by a previous reviewer--a singular treat, and thus serves as a good first disk. But it is a sampler of sorts, and while I think that all of their CDs are good and worth your attention, they do range in focus and style from tangos to the Baroque, to healthy doses of Beethoven, Brahms and Bach--so suit to taste. The 5 star rating I give this CD is really for the larger body of work that this disk draws from.

5 out of 5 stars I was prepared to have a mean rant, however.............2005-05-07

These ladies can play!! The chemistry and emotional fire is what makes up for the corny "Erotica Trio" title, but I ask you-what would you do as a graduating classical musician to get noticed today? Our cities are riddled with out-of-work and under appreciated young classical musicians, and it's partly our fault for not telling everyone about this great art form.
One day we may see a renissance in the musical arts where knowing the works & composers of the classical cannon won't be so rare- just imagine.

5 out of 5 stars Even my kid likes this!.......2005-11-07

This is an amazing collection of songs, all performed with such skill that even my 8-year-old son likes this CD. Brahms and Beatles, Mozart and Ellington, there is something here for everyone. And thank you, thank you, thank you for "Bassoonist's Holiday."

5 out of 5 stars Bassoon Me!.......2004-08-09

I delight in the bassoon! What a unique and great sound, throaty and thrillingly coarse, yet soaring to sound at times like sax, like oboe, like cello, like a bunch of bassoonatics!

This is delightful collection of musical styles played by this innovative and talented quartet. Choosing to select pieces that are not typically of the bassoon repertoire, we go from Waltz to Gershwin to Broadway to Motzart to Lennon/McCartnye to Sibelius to most of us unknowns such as Mitchell Clarke to Duke Ellington.

All played with passion and gusto and excellent tonality, phrasing and tempo.

Bassoon Me again!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Bassoonastics.......2003-09-27

This would have to be the best bassoon ensemble cd on the market. The arrangements are stylish and clever, and the performances brilliant! Fraser Jackson must be the most accomplished contrabassoonist I have ever head. This cd is a must for any bassoonists collection be you amateur or proffessional.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING QUARTET.......2002-04-14

This disc is really superb!!! Not only is the playing at an extremely high level by the group, the arrangements are also outstanding. The Brahms is abolutely beautiful. The group goes from lightning fingers bravura to sweet soulful singing. It is a joy to listen to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Simply fantastic!.......2001-10-26

I simply love the Caliban Quartet! They breath new life into bassoons! The way they bring out the music is simply magical. Not only do they sound good, their technical abilities are simply amazing!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great Cd.......2002-09-23

I think this album should recieve 5 stars. I think this because Forbidden Fruit by Zorn is a great piece of music which everyone should be familiar with. He quotes some great stuff in the work...among other things an excerpt from Beethoven's Grosse Fugue for String quartet. The rest of the music on this CD is fantastic. I feel the reviewer below gave three stars due to a inability to understand Zorn. But if you don't fall under that category or if you are willing to listen and be openminded I reccomend this CD without reserve

3 out of 5 stars Good Kronos Stuff.......2002-06-24

This album was my introduction to the Kronos Quartet. It is as good an introduction as I've heard. It illustrates both the positive and negative aspects of this talented quartet.

Some of the works on this recording are quite wonderful. Most exciting to me is the excerpt from Terry Riley's Salome Dances for Piece. The movement is exciting and stunningly played. It is also interesting to compare the version here with the version on the Kronos' recording of the complete work. If you listen to them side by side you can hear the extent of improvisation in the work. The most interesting thing is that, despite the improvisations, the work has a similar impact in each version.

Other gems on the CD include the Salonen title track, the Piazolla pieces, and a passionate reading of the Barber Adagio, perhaps the best I've ever heard. The Kronos also does a fine job with the Webern, though the competition here is much more fierce. And they also do a great job with the Schnittke Quartet, though I have always found the Russian composer's work hard to get close to.

Some of the other pieces are less successful. The quartet version of the Part Fratres is not bad, but does not have the impact of the all cello version. The Jon Lurie piece is a throwaway. And I have never understood the world's fascination with John Zorn. Just don't get it.

All in all, this is a good introduction to the work of the Kronos and most interesting for an alternate version of a major score by Terry Riley. But it's not a must have.

5 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Mix.......1998-09-23

This is a terrific CD. From Webern to John Lurie, to John Zorn's wild "Forbidden Fruit," to a stunning rendition of Barber's Adagio in it's original String Quartet form, this album rocks. Okay, probably not the most appropriate description of a string quartet album, but it does--it rocks. I think this is my favorite recording of the Barber Adagio. Some challenging pieces, but for anyone that loves contemporary classical music, this is a great set.

Amazon.com's Best of 1999

Violinist Gidon Kremer's ongoing fascination with tango master Astor Piazzolla continues to produce gorgeous, swinging CDs that meld dance with classical music. On Tango Ballet, Kremer and his ensemble passionately perform a handful of Piazzolla gems. --Jason Verlinde

Amazon.com

Violinist Gidon Kremer seems always to exceed our expectations. He's offered us spellbinding recordings of Beethoven's duo sonatas with Martha Argerich, a disc of Valentin Silvestrov's music--even an Arvo Pärt recording. But lately Kremer has focused on one composer: tango master Astor Piazzolla. With Tango Ballet--an early Piazzolla piece written to accompany a short film--we have yet another gem. Divided up into six movements, Tango Ballet slyly melds chamber music and ballet with tango themes (the Argentinean wasn't yet bitten by the jazz bug when he wrote this). The next grouping, Concierto del Angel, is the real show-stopper on this disc. These highlights from Piazzolla's brooding Angel series of compositions erupt in the spirited hands of Kremer and his ensemble. The bandoneon playing of Per Arne Glorvigen adds a sonic depth not found on Tango Ballet and Kremer--especially on Resurreccion del Angel--sounds simply gorgeous. Kremer's 1998 interpretation of Piazzolla's opera Maria de Buenos Aires is also an essential work. This recording features pieces that are less noteworthy, but the playing is just as exquisite. A must-have for Piazzolla fans. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-06-26

I don't understand the hysteria about "the missing bandoneon" and what a true piece of "nuevo tango" sounds like. Piazzolla first and foremost was a composer. He didn't write tangos or music for bandoneon. He wrote M-U-S-I-C. Real, original, beautiful, exquisite MUSIC. And that's what you have on this disc. Music, stripped of accidental considerations, that glistens.

Tango Ballet features some breathtakingly beautiful pieces. The highlight of the disc is the Angel Concerto of course. A miniature masterpiece. I consider myself a very lucky person for ever having the chance of listening to it, because it is *divine*.

Gidon Kremer does not need an introduction. His performance is superb, as usual.

I've been a Piazzolla fan for almost 20 years now, I own tons of his recordings, but this CD is one of my favourites. Not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars i want to give six stars~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2000-08-12

this was my first piazzolla cd, and it made me fall in love with him immediately! The "angel" tracks are incredible...so mysterious in the beginning..but gradually builds up to such a desperate, romantic climax. Piazzolla is a genius for adding some life to classical music!!!!! the rest of the tracks in the beginning and end are funky...i can never ever get bored of the cd. i have been listening to it almost daily for a year! i hope that everyone will enjoy this cd as much as i did, because it converted me from a classical liker to a classical lover!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars When Homage Turns Hubris: Gidon Kremer's "Tango Ballet".......2000-06-03

Gidon Kremer's has "Tango Ballet" certainly raised the posthumous eyebrow of the album's composer and Kremer's idol, tango doyen Astor Piazzolla. True, Kremer's transcriptions of Piazzolla are well-played and well-passionate -- but even his inordinate amount of Argentinian amor cannot replace a missing bandoneon. And in that way, the stirring, exciting "Tango Ballet" fails: without the bandoneon, and with many of Kremer's distinctly European artistic liberties, "Tango Ballet" no longer sounds like "el nuevo tango." Instead, it's a hideous step closer to Andre Rien. "Tango Ballet" is a good listen, bearing much of the intensity so characteristic of Piazzolla. But it doesn't bear that bandoneon -- and in said shift of sound and timbre, Kremer has taken the tango god's music and made it his own. Some tribute.

5 out of 5 stars simply great music and great playing.......1999-09-05

thank you to kremer and friends for bringing us yet another remarkable recording on piazzolla. i'm not a fan of tango and have not listened to any of piazzolla's own recordings, but am already overwhelmed by these tango-fugues completely. with the transcriptions and playing at such a standard, i suspect even piazzolla would smile. speaking from the music itself, kremer and friends have brought every drop of emotion alive. the dynamics of the playing is so strong that it embrace everything from bach's structure to debussy's tone colour and schnittke's blood and sweat tension. i would recommend this cd to anyone who likes great music. once again, thank you to kremer and his energetic kremerata baltica!

1 out of 5 stars This is not Tango.......1999-08-06

I bought this cd because of the title, Tango-Ballet, expecting Tango music. Belive me this is not Tango music, it is cat-screeching. I would NOT recommend this cd to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Memories of Films from Musical Themes .......2005-11-24

Gidon Kremer released this delicious little CD in 1999 and it has more or less gone unnoticed since then. This is not a 'soundtrack favorites' jumble but a serious approach to some beautiful melodies as interpreted by Kremer and pianist Oleg Maisenberg, with the added presence of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra conducted by the gifted Andrey Boreyko.

Works included are by Charlie Chaplin ("Smile"), Nino Rota, Takemitsu, Shostakovich, Milhaud, Piazzola, Dunayevsky, and Giya Kancheli. The arrangements are well written and the performances honor this genre of music with the same degree of dignity offered the 'serious' works of these composers. It is a bit of lightness but a not fluff and the beautiful playing by Kremer is well worth the listening. Grady Harp, November 05

Internationally acclaimed pianist Pablo Ziegler is probably best known as the pianist to the great Astor Piazzolla, whom he played with throughout the 1980s. Ziegler has carried on the torch since the master's death in 1992, issuing a handful of very good albums in the late '90s. Also featuring guitarist Quique Sinesi and bandoneon player Walter Castro, the album is a mix of rich Ziegler originals and a few covers. Most notable of the latter are Piazzolla's "Chin Chin" and "Fuga Y Misterio," which is the most complex fugue ever written by the master. Yet it isn't the complexity of the music here, or even the virtuosity (though that helps) that makes this album so winning; it is the unadulterated passion that comes through in these beautiful tunes. In fact, while Bajo Cero originally came out in 2003 on a different label, the power of the music demanded a reissue a mere two years after it first came out. --Tad Hendrickson

On November 3, 2005 this recording was awarded a Latin Grammy Award for Best Tango Album at this 6th annual awards presentation!

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Dark Tango.......2007-01-10

If you like your music dark and spooky, go for this Pablo Ziegler opus. With a bandoneon player who can't seem to play in a major scale and innovative variations on a theme of tango, this is no beginner album. The jazzy but spare piano combined with smart guitar and that mysterious squeeze box combine to produce an intriguing choice in the lineage of Astor Piazzolla.

    5 out of 5 stars Ziegler Doesn't Disappoint!.......2005-06-04

When Pablo Ziegler began recording solo albums after a long stint as Astor Piazzolla's pianist, most of the songs he recorded naturally paid homage to the deceased master. Then, as time passed, Ziegler seemed to feel more comfortable as an artist in his own right, and began to add some of his own compositions to albums that still leaned heavily on the legacy of Piazzolla. With Bajo Cero, Ziegler takes his boldest step out of Piazzolla's shadow and confidently expresses his own muse even when interpreting a Piazzolla composition.
I bought Bajo Cero several years ago when it was first issued and liked it instantly but it soon became overwhelmed in the jumble of other music I was then listening to. Recently, I brought it with me on a long trip and allowed it to play over and over, thus allowing me to develop an appreciation for what a fine recording this is.
Here's what I like best: Rayuela, Flor de Lino, and the title cut are the finest expressions of Ziegler's own muse. Fuga Y Misterio is my favorite Piazzolla composition interpreted here and I really enjoy Ziegler's take on the classic Los Mareados and the more modernistic Yuyo Verde.
When I bought Bajo Cero, I was hoping that it would showcase a mature Pablo Ziegler, and Ziegler did not disappoint! He is ably backed by Quique Sinesi on guitar and Walter Castro on bandoneon, both of whom I'd like to hear more. They put the flesh on Ziegler's arrangements without overpowering his virtuoso piano.
Here's a CD that's as listenable at the office as it is at home. If you are a Ziegler fan, a Piazzolla fan, or merely piano enthusiast with a soft spot for jazzy tango, then I highly recommend that you add Bajo Cero to your collection. You won't be disappointed.
