worthwhile for the piano concerto.......2006-09-14

I find the music on this album endemic of tendencies common to self-contained, academic schools of composition. It all comes off like an inside joke, except without the humor: if you are not familiar with the composer and his style these pieces will largely be lost on you, most likely. Hass seems often to be trying for subtlty but falling short, creating instead only weak, ineffective, or even at times incomprehensible gestures.

The concerto for wind ensemble and amplified piano is the exception. This is not a masterwork, but it is a unique, satisfying piece, at times Stravinskian in its rhythmic dissonance, at times bop-like in its presentation of fast, dry, complicated riffs (I think of the first movement especially), and at times harmonically lush in a post-Romantic vein. Amplifying the piano allows it to balance the full wind band even in the highest range, so that its gestures are not lost up there. Hass' writing and Barnes' playing are formidably virtuosic. I would certainly have preferred a better-recorded wind ensemble; they sound distant and a good deal of clarity and detail is missing. But the piece still works on this recording, and is ultimately effective.
