Faure Essentials.......2007-05-29
If you want to persuade someone to listen to Faure then this is the album to begin with. It contains the very best known melodies.
music inside you.......2005-10-01
Have you ever felt music inside you when watching the sun going down, when felling the breeze in your hair, when smelling the grass in a gentle summer night...? The music of this CD may remind you that part of yourself that we may tend to forget in our busy life, liked the words of Celibidache which I liked very much: "the music is not the notes, YOU are the music"!
You would feel in this way, when listening to this CD.
An excellent compilation of Faure's work.......2003-02-15
I bought this cd not knowing anything about Gabriel Faure's music. A local orchestra was planning to perform Masques et Bergamasques, so I picked this cd being the most inexpensive way of buying something I possibly was not going to enjoy. But nothing could be further from the truth. I love this cd! It has such a nice variation of formats: piano concerto (Ballede in F sharp major Op. 19), piano solo (Baracarolle No.1 in A minor, Op. 20), vocal (Requiem, Op. 48), and symphony (Masques et Bergamasques). The music is also well played by various artists...no complaints on the performance side. And if it is true that one becomes the thoughts and vibrations that one allows to enter his or her mind, then by listening to Faure you may find yourself becoming a bit more tender, patient, and even romantic in your ways.
Romance.......2002-11-23
Bought this CD originally because of Romance, but I like it all. This is a new composer for me and I'm glad I found Faure'.
good value.......2002-03-01
i'd recommend this to anyone who wants to get an inexpensive taste for faure's music. The recordings are decent, and the selection is interesting. After this, check out his nocturnes for piano and of course the Requiem.

A full-length Coppelia at an appealing price.......2003-06-26
Andrew Mogrelia has conducted a number of full-length ballets for Naxos: Giselle, Sylvia, Sleeping Beauty, and this Coppelia. I own all of them, because I find Mogrelia is one of those rare conductors who make a ballet sound like a ballet.
In concert hall versions, conductors often make ballet music impossibly fast, or simply too unpredictable. (Gergiev's Nutcracker is in this category: fun to listen to, definitely NOT a dancer's Nutcracker.) But when dancers are on stage, they need a regular, dependable beat to dance to. Mogrelia's Coppelia never sounds sing-song, because he uses dynamics so skillfully - but he does conduct at an authentic dance tempo.
Another Coppelia I like and own is Mark Ermler's (ASIN: B0000024CL), but while it's much more than highlights it is not the full ballet. The first act mazurka is missing, and that's a definite loss.
La Source is a bit of an oddity because it was originally commissioned as a sort of competition: half composed by Minkus, half by Delibes. Delibes was generally considered the winner, so he stayed in Paris while Minkus went off to Russia. This album is strictly Delibes, so it's only highlights from La Source. But it does include my favorite, the utterly charming Pas des Fleurs, Grande Valse.
Inspired ballet music at a bargain price........2002-07-13
Although I'm not particularly fond of watching ballets I have a special love for ballet music, and Coppelia is one of my favorites. It is the masterpiece of Leo Delibes who was one of the greatest of ballet composers. Even Tchaikovsky -- probably the greatest ballet composer of all -- greatly admired Delibes' work. This recording presents not only the complete music for Coppelia but also the lovely, but seldom-heard, music Delibes wrote for La Source -- both conducted by the excellent ballet conductor Andrew Mogrelia. And at a bargain price to boot. Please don't pass up this special treasure.
Superb Performance.......2000-08-27
I search for the recording for the complete Coppelia when my daughter's dance school was practicing for it. I found this item. Performance was meticulous. It was recorded in the Orchestra's concert hall over a period of almost two weeks. All digital recording. Well balanced orchestra. Fine details. A good item to collect.

Customer Reviews:
well-crafted music, but not a disc you'll return to.......2006-10-09
Milos Forman's film Amadeus has consigned Antonio Salieri forever to be thought of in direct comparison to Mozart, so let's get that out of the way first. I think it's fair to say that next to Mozart's opera overtures, these seem a bit one-dimensional; but only because they are Italianate, not because Salieri was the barely competent pretender that Amadeus portrays him to be. Salieri was a good composer, and his overtures are constructed very much like Verdi's overtures would be in the next century: the presentation of melodies is emphasized, and the more Germanic preoccupation with counterpoint and formal complexity is deemphasized. So again, if Salieri's music is simpler than Mozart's in this genre, that is mostly a matter of the Italianate style vis-a-vis the Germanic, and not of the inept craftsmanship with which the film so unfairly charges him.
Having granted Salieri credit where credit is due, however, it must also be recognized that these overtures are not the timeless masterpieces that Mozart's mature opera overtures so unfailingly are. After all, composers of the Classical era generally did not aspire to the production of timeless masterpieces: they thought of themselves not as Heroic Arists (a notion that didn't develop until well into the 19th century, with Beethoven as an early exception), but as craftsmen, much the way a chef or a carpenter thinks of himself today. Mozart in his day was very much the odd man out in making his own aesthetic ideals a higher priority than accessibility and immediate audience comprehension, and indeed his stubborness in this regard ultimately cost him permanent employment and a steady income, forcing him to get what work he could as a freelancer.
The first half of the album is hit-or-miss, some of the overtures actually being a bit weak. But there are a couple strong ones as well, and as the album progresses we hear consistently effective, dramatic music. There is a good deal of Sturm und Drang, minor-key pathos to much of it (Salieri was Beethoven's teacher, after all), and the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra plays the pieces ably.
In short, this disc is worth hearing for enthusiasts of Classicism, and for those interested in acquainting themselves with the actual, historical Salieri; but in the end these are only minor works from the period.
Worthy music.......2005-10-20
It is unfortunate that Antonio Salieri (1750 - 1825) is known now almost exclusively for being the nemesis of Mozart in the Peter Schaffer play and subsequent film 'Amadeus'. Salieri was certainly much more than the thwarted, second-rate composer. Perhaps he was not in Mozart's league so far as composition power goes (although the best of Salieri certainly stands up as worthy in comparison with many of the major composers of his time), but he was a respected composer in his own time, and perhaps more than for his composition, he was respected as a teacher and court musician. Salieri counts among his pupils Beethoven, Schubert, Liszt and even Mozart's second son.
His operas tended to follow a particularly popular formula, with dramatic flairs and stories easily accessible to the people. He drew inspiration from historical works, from mythological and fictional works, as well as works of popular circulation. Salieri even used some libretti from Lorenzo de Ponte, perhaps better known now as a librettist for Mozart.
This disc includes overtures of twelve operas (Salieri wrote nearly 50 operas, several of which were not premiered until the 1990s). They include pieces from his dramatic operas as well as his comic operas. The power in these is certainly evident. Perhaps the best of the lot is 'Cesare in Farmacusa (Tempesta di Mare)' and 'Axur, Re d'Ormus', an opera also involving de Ponte, and reworked from an earlier attempt to do a French opera into an Italian one.
It is a mistake (reinforced by 'Amadeus') to classify Salieri as an Italian composer - he lived most of his life in Vienna, and was criticised by the Empress at one point for being too much of a German composer. Salieri's works such as 'Don Chisciotte alle nozze di Gamace', the overture of which is included here, certainly shows his strength in writing toward the German.
This disc is a fun disc to listen to. There is nothing earth-shattering or new here, but these pieces are good compositions, and the performances by the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava), under the direction of Michael Dittrich, is exemplary. This is one of those often-overlooked Eastern European orchestras that has incredible performance ability; they have had international touring experience as well as a number of recordings for Naxos, who is to be praised for bringing less popular music to the general public in an affordable way.
Helping to bring Salieri out of the shade.......2002-04-30
I have read with interest the preceding reviews of this CD, and they seem to alternate between declaring Salieri an unacknowledged genius and totally worthless! (The Gramophone review, by the way, fell more into the latter category.) The truth lies somewhere in between. He is certainly no Mozart, but nonetheless he did write some very beautiful music which is surely worth hearing.
Like a previous reviwer, I was particularly impressed by "Cesare in Farmacusa" (1800), an overture in the "tempesta di mare" ("storm at sea") style, which has an incision and power that look ahead to Beethoven's thunderstorm music from the "Pastoral", and by "Ricco d'un giorno" (1784), a spirited and lively piece which is probably the most "Mozartian" item on the disc. There are some interesting moments in the other pieces, including "Les Danaides" (1784), which resonates with Gluck and even seems to look ahead to the Commendatore music in Mozart's "Don Giovanni". Worthy of note as well is the festive overture to "L'Angiolina" (1800), which is a setting of Ben Jonson's "The Silent Woman", which incidentally also inspired Donizetti's "Don Pasquale" and Strauss' "Die Schweigsame Frau".
All in all, a very nice disc which helps to bring Salieri out of the shade and is certainly worth exploring for anyone interested in the music of the late Classical and early Romantic periods.
...
Surprisingly delightful.......2000-05-17
Poor Salieri! After the job done on him in "Amadeus," one expects from his music nothing more than well-wrought pieces with no touches of genius whatsoever. Well, balderdash to that prejudice, as is demonstrated by the Naxos release of a dozen of his
(8.554838). Here, try this at a party. Without identifying composer or piece, play a few minutes of each cut and see if your audience can identify the former. I think I personally would have guessed at Haydn or Telemann on several of them. After all, this was the man who gave instruction to Schubert and Beethoven at one time or another and was certainly praised in his time by those who did know better.
But all this background aside, you will certainly enjoy these classical and sometimes early Romantic overtures to operas that no one will ever again perform for several reasons. The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava) under Michael Dittrich makes a good case for the composer, and the lighter and more serious of the overtures are nicely arranged to avoid repetition. Very nicely done in all respects.

Very Satisfying, Stimulating Listening! .......2007-06-04
Cooman clearly knows how to write music that is challenging but also accessible to the ear and satisfying. The piano concerto is playful, the sonata is melodic and as I listen to the symphonies, I can hear the "love and rain" and the spiritual heart of the Ave Maria. If you want to enjoy classical music from a truly gifted contemporary composer, I recommend this CD.I'm glad I have it.
Superb, expansive music from contemporary composer.......2007-05-24
I am going to write this review from the simply enjoyment point of view,
w/o any analysis of the musical forms, etc, and that isn't my specialty
anyway.
I like to try out CD's from Naxos, including modern composers. Since the
prices are so reasonable, even if the newer music isn't the greatest,
all their CD's are worth at least a few listens. That's one of the great things
about Naxos, small risk for generally high quality. Thus I knew
nothing about this composer other than the high praise I read in the
newspaper from the company that has listings from Naxos and other labels.
This CD turned out to be a spectacular winner. Mr. Cooman can really
compose some excellent, highly listenable music, and on this
CD there is an amazing variety of featured instruments (all composed for
very well in my opinion): flute, piano, violin and organ twice, strings
elsewhere, etc. And you don't hear what you would expect given the types
of compositions on the CD. Yes, there are (2) symphonies, a piano
concerto, a partita, a concerto for violin and organ, and more, but what
makes this CD so enjoyable is that it flows so beautifully, as if it were
a concept work, whatever the types of compositions (I have not read the
liner notes to see if that was the intention).
If you like classical music, I'd say get this CD immediately!

Composer, premiere player, soloist - Yin Cheng-zong's authentic Yellow River Concerto.......2007-07-03
I owned this disc for more than 12 years already. The CD cover was already the third one.
Lang Lang recently made a new recording of this piece with DG.
I heard master Yin play this piece (in Lang Lang's stead) last evening in Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and he moved me to tears.
Yin Cheng-zong is over 60 years old now. He lived through the various turmoils of China. It requires life experience and patriotism to interpret this piece, so very sorry, I haven't heard any foreign pianist playing this piece yet, let alone on record.
HOWEVER, Yin Cheng-zong did made a recording of this piece with Claudio Abbado, but the recording has never been released by the PRC official broadcasting agency. Yin himself claims that this was one of the most memorable performances he had of this piece - Abbado understands the piece so well that Yin was highly amazed!
The foremost player and interpretor of this piece remains Yin Cheng-zong, but I must say that ALSO hearing Lang Lang playing this piece a couple of days ago (also in Hong Kong), Lang's playing of this piece is vastly improving.
something missing and deadly wrong here.......2006-11-07
when i listened to this concerto, the first impression was something deadly wrong. if you want to portray and describe a river, the best way is to start from its origin, it might be just a trickle of dripping water and a small stream at first, then when going down, meet and entwine with other small streams, it gradually evolving into a great river all way down to the ocean. that's the way how you use the music to portray a river.
but the composer of this 'yellow river' was educated in the chinese communist system, his composition was still dominated subjectively by the blind chinese revolutionary passion, the concerto from the very beginning sounds like listening to a cultural revolution marching song, banging and pounding so headstrong against almost all the foreign elements, condemning so viciously and so mercilessly with hatred, like revolutionary army at wars, like those stupid formula musicals, songs and plays created in the cultural revolution era to please the butcher chairman mao. there's almost no big difference here. when you listen to this concerto, only a small part and portion make you feel like something good and wonderful offered by the river, most part of it sounds too clueless military.
we all knew that the chinese civilization and it's culture was originated from the yellow river, it's like a mother of china. yes, yellow river is always unpreditable and changing, its inevitable floodings in the history caused a lot of deaths and tragedies, but a river could never be always so merciless and vicious. this concerto and this music is not an appropriate interpretation of the yellow river but a chinese communist revolutionary marching song by a die hard communist composer. it's a very bad concerto actually.
Contains many piano solo treasures.......2006-03-26
The most important thing about this CD is its beautiful solo piano music from classical Chinese literature. You'll be amazed and delighted.
Trust me~ You will never get tired of it........2004-08-07
This is an excellent album that worth adding to your collection. Moreover, such great music for such low price, there is no reason you shouldn't buy it.
Very nice Music.......2003-01-15
I've heard The Yellow River Cantata for long time before I got this CD, this CD would be a very nice CD on your collection. And when I came to Yellow River (Hoang He) in the summer and spring, I knew this concerto said the trust: The river is always changing, savage and quiet. There is enough Asian spirit on this CD. As you know, every old chinese word and song are based on a story (called Gu dian, means classical) and if you know much about chinese stories you will feel completly this CD. One of famous Gu Dian is the fighting of Chinese people against the flood every year at the river's banks, for thousand years. You can find more information and "Gu dian" about this river in Chinese histories or stories.

very pleasant.......2005-10-19
These are well-played versions of these well-crafted works. The playing and recording quality are good. This composer wrote high quality music and these pieces are certainly representative. I would not describe this as an essential CD however. This stuff has a strong similarity to many other contemporaneous music. Probably most recommendable to those with a strong interest in Spohr or clarinet.
Great music, great value!.......2001-10-03
This is a nice recording. Very engaging music, well played, well recorded. If you like the clarinet, you'll like this CD. For the price, it's a great buy.

Customer Reviews:
This collection focuses more on Prokofiev's ballet works.......2001-08-12
I found it quite interesting that the two main CD collections featuring the assorted works of Sergei Prokofiev have so little overlap. Outside of key works like the March from "The Love for Three Oranges" and excerpts from his Classical Symphony in D Major, the two collections go in opposite directions. This particular collection emphasizes "Romeo and Juliet" and "Cinderella," while completely ignoring "Peter and the Wolf." What I like most about this one is that it has an excerpt from Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, which is the one the Amy Irving character plays in "The Competition." Consequently, this is one of the few times when you do not really have to choose between two competing "hits" collections, you can simply pick them both up. The "Best of Prokofiev" might be the one I would recommend picking up second, but it will still be a worthwhile addition to your classical music collection.

This third volume completes Misha Keylin's splendid recordings of Vieuxtemps' violin concertos; however, another one featuring his short pieces with orchestra will follow in 2005. Vieuxtemps (1820-1881) was not only one of the greatest violinists of his time but also a master pedagogue who taught or influenced Ysaÿe, Hubay, and Auer. His compositions are generally regarded as mere bravura showpieces, but this is contradicted by these last three concertos, which--though they do indeed demand utmost virtuosity from the player--reveal solid structural craftsmanship, masterful orchestration, and considerable emotional depth and intensity. No. 5 is the most familiar, but all abound in lovely melodies, inventive harmonies, and almost operatic drama and lyricism. As in the previous two volumes (Concertos Nos. 1 and 4 and Concertos Nos. 2 and 3), the playing is spectacular. Keylin! has the effortless brilliance, facility and flair to make the most hair-raising technical feats seem easy; he tosses off long passages in staccato, harmonics, and double and triple stops; his runs are perfectly clear at any speed. His tone is pure, focused, and beautiful, glowing in the low register, soaring up high, and he can change mood, color, and expression instantly with bow and vibrato. In the early concertos, he gave shape to the often overabundant sequences, keeping the grandeur from becoming bombastic and the fireworks from sounding empty. Here, without external effects, sentimentality, or excess, he projects every emotional nuance with captivating charm and genuine identification, from pensive inwardness to passionate ardor. For lovers of the best violin virtuoso writing and playing, this record is a must. --Edith Eisler
Customer Reviews:
No longer mere filler.......2007-03-20
Down through the years, I've heard these violin concertos (#5, 6, and 7) by Henri Vieuxtemps on recordings used as "filler" in recordings of the "biggies" (i.e., the Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, etc., concertos). In this recording of the last three violin concertos by Henri Vieuxtemps', they stand on their own as the featured works, They DO really stand alone as some very marvelous extreme romantic compositions. The concertos are filled with lush harmonies and soaring melodies. (I love the concerto #5 in A minor--its gorgeous!)
Misha Keylin, the violinist is "new" to me; however, he plays with very beautiful tones through out this recording and he certainly is "up to" the extreme demands of these works delivering the virtuosity of the works wonderfully. What impressed me very much is that no matter how demanding a part was he still managed to produce beautiful tones. To me, Misha Keylin is a most impressive violinist; I look forward to hearing him often.
The sound on this recording is great; it remains lovely through out its entirety never turning harsh. Naxos has done a great job of recording these lush works.
For some reason, I started this series at its end; however, I do intend to purchase the first two discs in this series. I was very impressed with this recording!
Great finish to a wonderful set of concertos!.......2003-12-12
One of the main things that I have enjoyed from the Naxos label is all of the concertos that have been recorded that has been next to impossible to find elsewhere. Case in point, Henri Vieuxtemps. These final three Violin Concertos round out a truly wonderful excursion into this oft neglected composer. Having the opportunity to hear all seven concertos recorded within only a few years of each other as well as having the same soloist makes a huge difference. Hearing the continuity of all seven concertos from the same interpreter (Misha Keylin) gives a wonderful overview of Vieuxtemps composition. If you love Romantic era Violin Concertos, you won't be disappointed with *any* of Henri Vieuxtemps works.
