The prewar HMV 78s of the Adolf Busch-Rudolf Serkin duo are some of the greatest chamber music recordings ever made. Even among them, the Schubert Fantasie stands out as a highlight. This is one of the most moving recordings ever made of a piece by Schubert. Busch's violin sings with almost unbearable poignancy, with Serkin's piano adding what sounds here like knowing commentary on emotional turmoil. It's a unique recording. If the duo's baroque style seems a bit dated, the remaining performances are still distinguished and the sound is very good for the period (1928-37). --Leslie Gerber
