For those whose passion for the music of Antonin Dvorak is unquenchable, be aware that at last this treasured set of performances of Dvorak, Smetena, and Suk by the inimitable Czech conductor Vaclav Talich has been re-mastered and is now available on four CDs. Though the name Talich may not ring many bells today, in his time he was revered as the definitive conductor of Czech music.

Within these four CDs Talich leads the Czech Philharmonic in Smetena's 'Má Vlast', Josef Suk's disarmingly beautiful 'Serenade for strings in E flat', and then offers both Opus 83 and 147 of Dvorak's 'Slavonic Dances' and crowns the set with exquisite performances of Dvorak's Symphonies 6, 7 and 8. Though there is no dearth of recordings of Dvorak's popular 8th Symphony, no one has captured the essence of this mighty work the way that Talich did. The movements are sculpted and caressed and the ensemble playing by the Czech Philharmonic is cohesive and attentive in its response to Talich's thoughts.

The sound of the recordings that date back to between 1929 to 1938 is remarkably fine in this re-mastering. No, the quality is nowhere near the lush beauty of the current SACD mode or enhanced by the techniques of modern equipment. But the sound is good and what minor blemishes there are disappear as the listener is captivated by the glory of Talich's readings. The box set may be a bit costly, but the contents within are priceless. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, February 06
