5 out of 5 stars A ***MUST HAVE*** ALBUM for lovers of CHORAL & SACRED MUSIC!.......2002-04-12

If you have a any appreciation at all for the human voice raised in song, you will absolutely LOVE this album!! I have had this album on cassette since 1990, but until three weeks ago, I'd never listened to the entire cassette. I had only listened to the first song on side A because I was that was the version of "Ave Maria" I was familiar with. THIS
ALBUM is the best compilation of choral music ever!!! It's not just different versions of "Ave Maria"; it is a compilation of songs whose theme is Maria. I particularly like the Giovanni Battista Pergolesi duet, "Stabat mater: Sancta mater istud agas". You would have to be DEAD not to fall madly, deeply and completely in love with this song. All the songs on this album are GEMS!!! I highly recommend this album. I'm buying the CD version myself, as I have been playing my cassette to death. Buy the CD already!!!!

This collection is a testimony to the shared Christian faith of both the Western and Eastern Churches. Homage is paid to the thousands of Polish and Ukrainian Catholics who, despite hardship and difficulty, preserved their faith and heritage in their new home.

      This album has some of the most beautiful--and beautifully executed--Christmas carols I've ever heard, and I collect carols as a hobby. My personal preference would have been not to intersperse choral pieces with instrumental ones, and in fact to do the entire album a capella; but I just skip over the cuts I don't care for and let the ones I do like transport me to another world.

      [On another note: J. Michael Thompson wrote one of the two (current) reviews of this CD, and apparently forgot to give it any stars. Someone at Amazon apparently took that to mean NO stars and averaged out the five stars of the other review with no stars and came up with 2 1/2 stars! Duh? It is obvious from what he wrote that Thompson heartily endorses HIS OWN work. Wake up, somebody at Amazon, and please correct this.]

      Soli Deo Gloria Cantorum is a 16-member professional singing group from Omaha; it is under the direction of Almeda Berkey. She and her husband, Jackson Berkey, a noted composer in his own right, are the principal keyboardists for Mannheim Steamroller. They both sang with the Norman Luboff choir in years past; many of the harmonies in their work are (fortunately) influenced by the Luboff style. Gaudete is their second CD. Much of it consists of familiar Christmas music (done beautifully, crisply, and with precision), but the other material on this album is the reason to buy it. To put it frankly, "Jesu, Son Most Sweet and Dear" with alto soloist Phyllis Noble, is one of the most hauntingly beautiful, extraordinary things I've ever heard. I know people who set their CD player to repeat this particular track over and over again. Other standout selections are Chesnekov's "Salvation is Created," and what is listed as "Ave Maria," which is the Bogoroditste Devo from Rachmaninov's Vespers. It is absolutely smashing, especially when the basses come in at the climax. A thoroughly satisfying album, done with taste and style; I'm pleased to recommend it.
