5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Compilation release.......2005-11-24

This release is a remastering of the two previous releases: Sweet Power of Song and On Wings of Song. Both original CDs are still available if you hunt for them. The original releases do have the texts included in the booklets (lamented by a previous reviewer of this compilation release). The lack of text is not a problem for me. I just listen to these incredible singers. I don't need to read what they are singing.

If you even slightly enjoy listening to the soprano voice, you will love these two luscious singers. Soprano duets are among my favorite classical music selections. Lott's clear, strong voice rings with authority and joy. Murray provides perfect harmony and occasional counterpoint.

I prefer the first disk (Sweet Power of Song) because it is more balanced and seems to represent the sopranos' favorite selections. However, disk 2 (On Wings of Song) has Rossini's delightful Cat Duet which is worth the price of both CDs as performed by this amazing duo.

Whether you buy this compilation set or the individual releases, I promise that you will love them and keep them near your player all the time.

4 out of 5 stars Text Translations Please!.......2002-01-11

Musically, I give this double CD set 5 stars. I love the warm soprano of Felicity Lott and the beautiful mezzo of Ann Murray. They always are a pleasure to listen to, each on their own, and together, they make music that is, more than simply beautiful and technically impeccable, but truly a joy to listen to. It adds so much to musical enjoyment to understand what the lyrics are, however, so rather than buying this double CD set, for which the text translations have been stingily omitted by the label, I would recommend buying each of them separately. I bought this CD set not realizing that one of the two CDS is one that I had bought previously, and been enjoying for many years. It is entitled "On Wings of Song" and the texts and the translations are all included. I highly recommend buying it. I don't know under what title the other CD might have been released. If you are so fluent in foreign languages that the lack of translation does not bother you, then I would highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Rocky rocks Rossini!.......2003-05-16

If you are familiar with Rockwell Blake's singing, this will be a welcome addition. If not, you are in for a treat. All the thrills we expect from Rocky are here, as well as drama and a great sense of humor. For thrills, try his "La Danza" with the fabulous high A at the end that he holds for 11 bars...he actually out-does Pavarotti here (and I LOVE the Pav's version). For drama, check out "Le sylvain" which is the best version of this one I've ever heard, and also "Romeo"...both throb with emotion. However, my favorite things on this cd are the songs that show off Rossini's humor, and Rocky gets right into it. Check out "L'orgia", which I never liked until I heard this drunken version!!! And then there is "La lazzarone", which exploits Rossini's love of eating, and has the famous quote about "see Naples and die". Rocky's version of the Cat Duet, whether by Rossini or not, is my all-time favorite, with male alto Gerard Lesne along for the ride. Blake ornaments this one like you've never heard, and he has a great 'meow'! I played this cd TO DEATH until it was stolen from my car. Hope they liked it! Highly Recommended!!!!!!

As the father and daughter duo, the Hobohemians, Bruce and April Hobart make music. Honest music; no pretense. What you hear is what you get. With original songs that draw on the string band and folk traditions, the Hobohemians have given us a collection of songs that feel as comfortable as a wood fire on a chilly Maine night. April and Bruce are from Maine, and their musical offerings possess the sturdy and genuine qualities for which Maine is known. There are a number of well-crafted songs here. In "I'll Be Right Home," penned by Bruce, gospel harmonies drive home the desire to return to that comfortable place. Bruce gets to sing high lonesome here too, and it sounds mighty fine. The man with the clerical collar in Bruce's "Circuit Rider" is at peace with duties that include naming babies and inspecting for scabies. This fiddling man of God is portrayed in a manner that allows us to accompany him on visits to his holler's faithful. In the lovely "Stories," April relates fond memories of encounters and adventures that tell of catching salamanders, dancing at recitals, and keeping a vase that contained lilacs given to her by a childhood beau. April employs a lilting vocal that perfectly fits the mood of this track. In "Trader's Blues," Bruce's rugged vocal convincingly delivers lyrics that tell of deals for baseball cards featuring Ted Williams, Rocket, Scooter McGruder, and Mo Vaughn. A can of sardines and a bottle of IPA make these deals sweeter still. It's not just the songwriting that will draw you to these songs, however. Listen to the music! Fiddles, guitars, mandolins, and banjos weave confidently around harmonies that glide through chorus and verse. Bob Boothby sits in on banjo on "Brothers," my favorite Hobohemian track. Heather Pierson chips in on piano on four tracks (and backup vocals on "The Lonesome Hobo's Blues") and was the recording engineer of this worthy project. Expert mastering by Toby Mountain delivers a clear, cr! isp sound. As I write these notes, it's twenty-five degrees and the season's first snow is expected during the night. Perfect. Put another log on the fire and cozy up with the Hobohemians.

            5 out of 5 stars Hoedown!.......2002-08-25

21 songs for 15 bucks! That is a bargain. And what a great CD - excellent songwriting all around. Poignant and haunting at times, and other times loose, fun, and fiery! Bruce and April have taken up their guitars, banjo, and other roots instruments and given us a gem of an album, full of stories and catchy riffs. A must-have for fans of honest, acoustic music.

            5 out of 5 stars The Hobohemians.......2002-04-30

If you like lively foot-stompin' music, this is a great album of original tunes written by the artists. Of course I may be a little bit predjudiced as I'm the Dad and Grandfather of the artists

This is a wonderful mix of lively, toe-tapping originals with a traditional, down-home, bluesy, and sometimes nostalgic flavor. Let's hope we hear more in the future from this multi-talented father-daughter duo! This is a must-have!
