4 out of 5 stars Stoki's impressive Mahlerite swan song.......2007-06-05

Leopold Stokowski was 92 years old when he made this recording for RCA in 1974, in fact his only commercial recording of a Mahler symphony. This is all the more remarkable, since Stoki a) was present in Munich when Mahler had his premiere performance of the eight, b) was an early Mahler champion, introducing the second symphony in the US as early as 1921. He also introduced the eight and Das Lied von der Erde for the American audience. On CD, we have Stoki's 1950 Carnegie Hall broadcast performance of the eight, which is a memorable moment, released on CD in various bootleg editions (e.g., Archipel), and his second in the 1963 London prom concert (BBC Legends) is also of great interest, in fine mono sound.

This RCA stereo recording - Stoki's Mahlerite swan song, he died in 1977 - is similar to the latter performance. They are almost as long, with broad tempi, and typical dramatic and eccentric Stoki accents are similar as well (even if Stoki now avoids the ad libitum alto choral underscoring of "O Schmerz" etc. in the finale, which is clearly preferable). The orchestra plays well, if not with perfection. But the sound is of course much better, on all accounts, even if the BBC Legends mono transfer is excellent.

Fassbaender and Price are fine soloists, even if Baker in the 1963 live is unmatched.

The performance of Brahms's fourth symphony is a fine fill-up, even if the Mahler symphony is the main attraction.

In sum, this is a memorable and impressive performance that I don't want to be without. Even if it doesn't replace Klemperer's 1963 (EMI) and Walter's 1961 (SONY) recordings as primary choices, it is strongly recommended for all Mahlerite collectors. One can only hope that RCA soon releases it from the company vaults.

Of the literally hundreds of recordings available of the Brahms 4, this, in my opinion, is the greatest. Stokowski's orchestral sonorities, control and drive is utterly amazing. Several other recordings, such as Reiner, Szell, Kleiber and Toscanini have drive and discipline, but both lack Stokowski's incredible sonorities. Some critics make balk at the speed in which Stokowski takes the coda in the first movement. In this case, it's not only the speed that is so astonishing, it's the energy. I dare any conductor to match the intensity, drama and drive Stokowski achieves in this performance. His adjustments to the dynamics to the score in the 4th movement is startling, but sounds so right. It will be hard for anyone to hear this symphony in the same way again after hearing Stokowski. What makes this performance even more astonishing is the fact that Stokowski was 93 years old! A great recording that deserves to be in any collection.

The Mahler 2 is a tightly contoured performance played with the same intensity that makes the Brahms a great performance. Considering the few Mahler recordings Stokowski made, this makes a valuable document of his art. You can't go wrong with this cd!

4 out of 5 stars For those bored of 4th's and 2nd's.......2000-03-17

Not recommended for first-time listeners of either of these works. Not too faithful to the score, but have more energy and excitement than any other recordings. A bit pricey for two not-so-well-filled discs, but I find its value grows over time. *Extremely* quirky tempos in the first movement of Brahms 4th, and the Scherzo of the 2nd. That may put off the Toscanini fan club, but the adventurous will love it. I'd hate to spoil the surprises on the CD (any further than I already have), but Stoki's 2nd is the only recording that doesn't make the instrumental finale sound anticlimactic after the massive choral explosion that precedes it. This is the perfect example of what a great showman and entertainer Stoki was, even in his 90's(!), when he made these recordings. Another very important reason to get this set - it's the only recording Stoki made of a Mahler symphony. And now that it's out of the complete Stokowski Stereo recordings set, it's finally affordable.

These CD's contain kown, very known (Canteloube, Bach transcriptions), and rarities. Its often delirious, and the orchestrations are rewritten (Dvorak nine, Tchaikowsky six). But Brahms five and Beethoven third are very serious and have good place in a plethoric discography. Mahlers second is a reference, and we have a grandios Wagner, with "just enough customization" The sound is remastered, good quality but a little sharp (Brahms-Shostakowitch). Anyway an essential contribution to the music by a great monster of the conducting. Stokowski: often imited, never matched. Indispensable !!
