Mono recording -- beware.......2005-04-27

It's my own fault for not looking at the label and seeing this disc consists of all mono recordings, which were made in the 30's and 40's. As such the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired.

Maybe historical recordings are of interest to you, I don't know, but I'd rather have the crisp clear CD sound of a modern recording.

Otherwise, the playing is very good.

Rare Jewels.......2005-03-28

There be rare jewels here.

They're all great encores by the greatest violinists of the 20th
century. I wish Fritz Kreisler had been represented by a piece
that isn't so overplayed. There are gems in this set, every one of them, but you have to hear Ricci in 'Burleska'; such amazing incisiveness and bite (accompanied by his teacher, Louis Persinger !!). I wouldn't blame you if you listen to Amazon's
music links here over and over. These guys are the best !!
Foreign violinists, save Francescatti are probably under-represented here.

The BEST classical music CD on this planet!.......2003-03-19

I got this on a Monday and by Tuesday evening, I must have listened to it about 10 times. It is the absolutely best compilation of violin works by the best violinists that ever lived. Yes, there is surface noise due to the age of recordings (most were done during the 1930's and 1940's) but I was absolutely riveted by the music that I didn't even notice the surface noise. This is a CD you really find yourself listening to from beginning to end with no distractions (cooking, reading, etc.) because the music is so beautiful, you are spellbounded.

Rare, priceless.......2002-06-30

This collecrtion has some pieces that are hard to find. Dance of the goblins is a excellent violin piece, but finding it played by a great violinist is hard. Jascha Heifetz plays is perfectly. The songs are not only great, but this CD features an ALL STAR cast. Every artist on this CD is of a class of violinst that has vanished. The only one remaining, Isaac Stern, died a while ago, leaving this amazing, unbeatable generation gone forever.

Buy this CD now, you will never find a collection this stackedm or find these pieces played so well.

One of the best CDs.......2004-02-20

This is one of my favorite CDs. The Suk and Dvorak could not be any better. I recommend this recording to anyone who loves good violin music.

Tasteful, balanced.......1999-09-17

I found the Dvorak Concerto satisfying all around, and the third movement is the strongest rendition I've heard. Frank and Mackerras work as equal partners, smoothly shaping phrases and trading roles, together every step of the way. I thought the orchestra sounded fine. Dvorak didn't write tutti blowouts in this piece.

You don't hear the Suk Fantasy every day, so I'm glad they recorded it. Although the difficulty of the solo part shows in a couple of spots, Frank delivers the goods in spirited fashion. If you like a hot-blooded romantic piece with a broad range of colors bright and dark, check this one out.

Mediocre orchestra playing degrades exquisite Dvorak.......1999-08-13

The Czech Philharmonic behind Pamela Frank frankly sounds more like an elementary school gig than a world renowned orchestra. The orchestra's only high point is the introduction, the only point in the entire concerto where some level of intensity is played. Pamela Frank's prodigic music-making is readily noticed with her passionate opening: declaring spot-on intonation from the start, she holds the listener spellbound, until the orchestra makes their next entrance. Disappointing would easily describe this CD, for the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra sorely affects the quality of the CD, and if it wasn't for Pamela Frank (whose technical skills are simply phenomenal) this CD would be a complete disaster.

A wonderful CD with exiting upbeat music that keeps.......1999-03-29

This Cd is wonderful and has a beautiful sound. It has a wonderful violinist and a great orchestra that keeps me listening to the same CD over and over again. Not many people would expect a 12 year old to be saying this about a classical Cd but this is by far one of the best pieces and one of the best violinist in the history of music.

This is the second in an ongoing series of Friedman recordings; I missed the first one. Friedman can be a maddening pianist. His impulsive style of playing can be off-putting, but it can also be incredibly exciting. And one is never in doubt about his ability to get exactly the effect he is after; he was a master technician. All of the performances date from the late 1920s and are early electrical recordings.

This CD contains his only extant concerto recording - a merely OK performance of the Grieg with an unidentified French orchestra conducted by Philippe Gaubert. The second movement is both more limpid and dramatic than most other versions. He also recorded the Beethoven 'Emperor' with Henry Wood, but that was never issued and probably no longer exists, alas.

Some impressions: The 'Moonlight' Sonata appears _without_ its famous first movement. The second movement is simply wayward, with odd agogic accents and a mixture of staccato and legato. But the Presto is a windstorm and quite effective. The Chopin B-flat minor sonata is missing its first two movements. The sonata's funeral march is faster than usual but effective. The last movement, usually 'the wind whispering over a graveyard,' is more of a gale; it's exciting and I kept thinking 'well, why not?'

The A-flat Polonaise of Chopin is one of the most exciting I know and those impossibly fleet left-hand octave scales are simply amazing. Whew!

There is no question Ignaz Friedman was a force of nature and for those of us who love getting to know pianists from the so-called Golden Age, he's indispensible.

As always the recorded sound is about as good as it can get with recordings that are more than seventy years old. Ward Marston, that miracle of a producer, gets enormous credit for the work he keeps putting out for Naxos in their series of historical recordings. And then there's the budget price!
