Editorial Reviews
Lehman American Record Guide March/April 1993
Three superb violin sonatas by composers who studied in Paris after World war I combine the American virtues of directness and sincerity with polished and inventive craftsmanship. Quincy Porter's dates from 1929 and was written while Porter was in France on a Guggenheim fellowship. Despite distant reminders of D'Imdy and Roussel, this is clearly amn American piece, with sturdy and vigorous allegros setting off slower sections of lyrical, long-lined violin melodies over arpeggiated piano accompaniments. Walter Piston's sonata has only been recorded once or twice before-most notably by Josef Fuchs and Artur Balsam in the 1950s. It's vintage Piston, written in 1939, between his first two symphonies: lucid, poised, contrapuntal, rhythmically vibrant, constructed with Brahmsian perferction. I consider it one of the great American examples in the genre. As indeed also is-in its own very different way-Copland's airy, improvisatory, singing, unforgettable sonata of 1943. Copland didn't write much absolute music, but this sonata is one of his best pieces, as purely and naturally American as the trained-in-France Jewish immigrant's son from Brooklyn who wrote it. Linda Rosenthal and Lisa Bergman play beautifully (tempos are a tad conservative), and recorded sound is fine. This recording gave me great pleasure from beginning to end, and should be of interest to all lovers of 20th Century chamber music.
