Album Description

Neva Pilgrim is known throughout the country for her extensive work with composers, many of whom have written for her. She appears regularly in recital and as soloist with orchestras, having performed with the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Brooklyn Philharmonic, Syracuse Symphony and Clarion Concerts. She has concertized in Japan, Canada and Europe and appeared at such festivals as Tanglewood, Marlboro, Chautauqua, Monadnock, and Saratoga Baroque.

Edward Smith , is known throughout the USA and Europe as a soloist and ensemble performer. H received his Bachelor of Music from Lawrence University, studied composition with Luigi Dallapiccola in Italy, and was a student of Ralph Kirkpatrick at Yale. Mr. Smith was a member of the famed New York Pro Musica from l964-69, was a founding member of the Philidor Trio, and has been a regular performer with the New York Consort of Viols and the Waverly Consort. He presently resides in Verona, Italy.

Steven Heyman studied at Juilliard and the Hochschule für Müsik in Vienna. He has performed throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe and has received prizes in competitions including the Beethoven Competition in Vienna, the Gina Bachauer, Southern International Competition, the Portland [Maine] Competition and the American Music Scholarship Competition. He was the top American and fourth Laureate in the prestigious Palm Beach Invitational International Piano Competition. Mr. Heyman teaches at Syracuse University and Hamilton College in upstate New York.

Pilgrim's voice is without expression or feeling, and unfortunately, is with excessive and unstable vibrato. The selections are wide-ranged and interesting. The program has great potential as a comprehensive resource, but it's vocal performance lacks talent, technique, and interpretation.

Difficult, Beautiful Music.......2006-07-23

Out of curiosity, I decided to purchase Adrian Belew's woefully underrated album, The Experimental Guitar Series Volume 1: The Guitar As Orchestra. As an appreciative listener, I anticipated something unique. I was not disappointed. This album is the sort of effort that is a deeply personal expression, one that is clearly not meant to be "mainstream. "

There are so many layers to this album...not so much like an onion, but rather like the layers of atmosphere...these ten tracks are more breathtaking the higher one goes up in elevation. It is rather difficult for me to say that any one track is better than the others. It's not quite that sort of album.

My only quibble is that it is far too short a collection of Belew's technical genius, which is clearly apparent in his use of musical tools. Of course, not everyone is into difficult music as I am. For me, The Guitar As Orchestra is a movable feast that, once the last coda sounds, leaves me hungry for more. It is regrettable that most music "critics" don't fully understand this album. It certainly takes some getting used to for most listeners, but I assure you that the challenge it creates for the listener is evolutionary in its scope and effect.

I did discover an echo of the beginning strains of his song, "May 1, 1990" (from his album, Here) in the track, "Finale." This discovery made me realize that there are no useless themes in Belew's ouevre: one musical concept inspires subsequent works. This evocation of thematic connection places Guitar As Orchestra apart from the work of his contemporaries as one would compare the works of Mozart with the middling efforts of Salieri. My hope is that--unlike Mozart--Belew's genius becomes universally appreciated while he's still here around to benefit from the acceptance he deserves.

If you don't want your brain to be stimulated, then perhaps this is not your sort of musical fare. What a regrettable state of affairs for music that such an engaging work as this is considered "marginal." It is a loss for those who pass up this incredible banquet for the ears, mind and soul. I'm just happy that I was able to discover this gem. It is a most precious and underappreciated diamond in a world that drools for mere charcoal.

Amaize's selection of art songs covers a wide range of poets, among them Sappho, Langston Hughes, Paul Laurence Dunbar, and Robert Burns. Whatever he's singing, you know it comes from someplace very deep in his soul. A wonderful CD.

If you like Air Liquid, Jammin' Unit, or any related side projects of Dr. Walker, definitely get this one.

2 cds of nonstop gritty breakbeats, analog synth noises, shortwave sounds, and 808 beats.

Niether artist at there best.......2001-02-23

I am familiar with much of Holger Czukays work with Can and solo and I have to say this the least spectacular recording he has made. Alot of the two discs fail to walk the very thin line of listenable dance music, which is what it is dance music. Not the place to start for either artist. A real letdown.

I give it 4 1/2 stars.Former Can bassist Holger Czukay had teamed up with Dr.Walker(of Air Liquide)for several live gigs and Tone Casualties had decided to unleash this two-disc release upon a somewhat eager public.Straight to the point,'Clash' is nothing short of a truely great experimental/Avant Garde piece of recorded work.Disc one has three(3)tracks from the duo's memorable gig in Cologne,Germany where the nineteen-minute trancedelic "Silent Planes" is the best that show had to offer.Disc two has some good tunes from their San Francisco show,where I thought the in-your-brain "Monks,Whales And Moonbeams" more than gives any fan a run for their money as did the twenty-four minute epic "Down Across The Street",a cut from their Minneapolis concert.Glad to hear that Czukay had actually played some dates on American soil.Should appeal to fans of Brian Eno,Mike Ink,Can and Cluster.A should-have.
