Aside from the enthusiastic applause before and after each performance, you would never know this recording is live. The sound is clear and balanced throughout. The Berg quartet achieves a high level of catharsis with both quartets, and convey their passionate and inspired performance convincingly to the listener. For the first quartet, I recommend also reading Tolstoy's short story of the same name "The Kreutzer Sonata" for an understanding of the extra-musical associations with the quartet. The quartet is haunting and beautiful without reading it, but I think in this case having a real story to go along with it makes the impact much more intense. This is a great recording, and cheaper than most. I obviously recommend it!

              Like the material in Testament's other coupling of these two composers (1074), these recordings were made in Germany in the mid-60s. They catch a legendary ensemble, at the height of its powers, in the music of its native country, which it plays with unique insight and phenomenal execution. The Smetana Quartet made other recordings of most of these pieces, but this is its only recording of the Terzetto (for two violins and viola), a treasurable piece and a performance easily worth the price of the disc on its own. The age of the recordings is hardly apparent, but these performances would be worth hearing even if the recordings were worse than they are. --Leslie Gerber

              The total time is rather skimpy on this disc, but it's more than worth it for the first version of the String Quartet #2, which is even more pained, more passionate, more modern than the final version. The rest of the disc is never dull.
