The picture.......2006-12-11
I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-05
This is a really good representation of 20th century hymn tunes sung by a typical British Choir made up of boy sopranos, male altos and the usual number of tenors and basses. The choir sings very well using good diction and appropriate interpretation. The arrangements are varied, different groups of voices singing parts of a hymn usually alternating and eventually the full choir joins in; nothing unusual in the arrangements themselves. There is a nice variety of hymns, some more interesting than others. I will comment on a few of them as follows:
The opening hymn:'Christ, triumphant, ever reigning' is a good opener in that it is quick and begins with the boy sopranos and immediately gets your attention. John Barnard's majestic 'Guiting Power' tune sweeps the words up in a wide-ranging,flowing melody that creates from them a fine hymn.
'I, the Lord of sea and sky(Here I am, Lord) is a truly striking hymn! The words of this song begin with a proclamation in the verses; this is answered in the refrain by the singer's commitment to service. This is reflected in the tune. The melody for the verses has a vigorous movement to proclaim the work of God in creation, His continuing love for that creation, and His call for service. Both the words and music are by the American Jesuit musician Daniel L. Schutte, who has served both on college campuses and in parish ministry.
'All My Hope On God Is Founded' the tune of which is written by Herbert Howells and is called 'Michael'in memory of his son who died in childhood. It is a lovely melody and the words suit it very well.
The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was the music editor of the 'English Hymnal'. The most widely used of his own tunes was the 'Monk's Gate' which he created from a folk tune. It is subtly contrived, as the rhythm of the alleluias shows. 'Sine nomine' simply means without a name. The resulting hymn is 'For All the Saints'.
The Wells Cathedral Choir under the direction of Malcolm Archer accompanied by Rupert Gough on the organ have produced an excellent disc.
Dan Schutte's Here I Am, Lord.......2001-01-08
I bought this collection because I saw the song, Here I Am, Lord written by Daniel Schutte. I grew up singing this song and many other pieces from the St. Louis Jesuits and this continues to be one that has deep meaning for me. In addition, the other pieces in this collection are very enjoyable to listen to, not only for worship but for time of reflection.

God is an Englishman.......2000-06-05
After the Anglican Communion, particularly the American branch, has completed its transformation from a church to a political-social club, at least it will be remembered for two things: the beautiful and influential language of its Book of Common Prayer (1662) and its wonderful music. The English Hymn, volume 1, is a promising start to another English music series by Hyperion. This series complements Hyperion's English Anthems series, its Psalms at St. Paul's (many volumes of Anglican chant), and its two-CD collection of "Mags and Nuncs" (My Soul Doth Magnify the Lord and My Spirit Hath Rejoiced). Volume 1, "Christ Triumphant," features hymns written in the 20th century. The styles of the hymns range from confident, pre-Great War, "God is an Englishman" roof-raisers to insipid, happy-clappy jingles, which inadvertently, I assume, parallel the decline of the church. The Wells Cathedral Choir sings with gusto and, typical of Hyperion, the sound quality is excellent. My only disappointment came when the CD ended - is this all there is to the 20th century? I hope Hyperion plans to include more than one volume on the 20th century in this series. If you enjoy this type of music, you will be satisfied with this CD. If you have CDs from the other series listed above, the English Hymn, vol. 1, and a programmable, carousel-CD player, now you can click your heels and transport yourself to Evensong at King's College, Cambridge, or St. Paul's, London!

Customer Reviews:
Great CD!!.......2003-08-07
This is a must for all trombonists and music historians!! The sound of these groups is just amazing! Nowhere else can you get a sound like you do with the instruments that these trombonists use. Where else can you hear a contrabass, bass, tenor, alto, soprano, and sopranino trombones all together? A great CD for a historical reference on the trombone also...tromobone chiors are one of the oldest forms of music, and THE oldest perfoming groups in the USA are the Moravian trombone choirs. This CD gives us a rare look into the past of how trombones were commonly used in centuries past, and how the tradition continues today.
Favorite Moravian chorales from childhood........1999-11-20
Trombone choirs! I love them. Everytime I hear this recording, I see again the church of my childhood and the trombone choir standing out in the snow near the front steps playing Christmas chorales during the hour before the Christmas Eve service. Why were they out there a full hour before the service? If you wanted a seat, you had to arrive an hour early, because late comers sat in folding chairs in the cloakrooms, or stood in the back. That church was filled to brimming only on Christmas Eve, because music lovers came from miles away to hear traditional Moravian Christmas music, and where else could one possibly hear it? Some of it is on this recording. The words sung to track 8 are "All my heart this night rejoices...", and that sense of anticipation and pleasure is exactly what Moravians feel as they enjoy a night of great music, sung mostly by the people in the pews, not just the choirs. It's all here. The great songs from Advent, Lent, songs of repentance, forgiveness, joy, for baptising babies and burying old people. When you hear track 19, Hosanna, think of a room full of singers on Palm Sunday, echoing back and forth to each other, the little girls and women singing back to the boys and men. My only criticism is that there are perhaps too many songs in minor keys grouped together. They evoke too much sadness and start to sound like endless dirges. The musical interpretation and masterful rendering of the chorales is absolutely delightful, not only for us who hold all the words in our heads and are singing along, but also for those who will assign their own meaning to the music.

Discover a divine composer for just pennies.......2006-12-05
Anyone who takes a walk down the classical aisles at any record store will notice the sheer amount of compilations produced in this genre. From opera arias to ambient mixes to the greatest hits of a particular era, there's hundreds of them. But compilations of modern composers are rare, and Deutsche Grammophon deserves praise for this disc offering samples of the ecstatic music of Olivier Messiaen. The music of this devout Roman Catholic who saw colours when he heard notes and thought birdsong was the voice of God is full of majesty and glittery effects like no other.
The selections cover the two ends of Messiaen's career. Four selections are early. "The Ascension" for orchestra is from 1932, one of the his first major pieces he ever wrote. From the "Quartet for the End of Time", the masterpiece he wrote while held by the Germans in a prisoner of war camp, we have the passionate "In Praise of the Eternity of Jesus" movement. And from the "Turangalila Symphony" of 1948, the massive composition highlighting Messiaen's interest in exotic rhythms and praising romantic love, we get the two most exhuberant movements. The compilation skips over the 50s, 60s, and 70s. From the late end of Messiaen's career we get the "Abide in Love" movement from his last full work "Illuminations of the Here-After", and the "Vocalise" movement from his "Concerto for four soloists", completed by his wife Yvonne Loriod after his death.
The orchestral works here are performed by the Orchestre de l'Opera conducted by Myung-Whun Chung. I've never been too passionate about these, preferring the Rattle recording of the "Illuminations" and the Nagano of the "Turangalila Symphony". Ditto for the "Quartet for the End of Time", here in the old Barenboim recording, for which I prefer the TASHI ensemble's performance. Still, while the material here seems second-best to this review who has built up a whole Messiaen collection, none of the performances here are poor. You'll be entertained from all. There's also an informative booklet with enlightening details on the pieces.
If you're curious about Messiaen's music, this compilation, used copies of which go for pennies, is a great way to encounter the work of this highly individual and supremely listenable composer.
DON'T JUDGE THIS CD BY ITS COVER.......2000-11-30
As averse as I am most of the time to compilations, and with good reason (e.g. Mozart's Greatest Hits, Vol. 25), this CD is a find and, if not exactly altering my opinion, does serve up a little crow for me to munch.
At first I didn't know what to make of it; I'd seen it bouncing around the library bins for weeks, its purple "presence," with the DG logo hidden discreetly at the bottom left corner, throwing me completely offguard.
"MYSTIC." That's all the cover says. I thought--- not thinking at all, actually--- "Mystic," what? Mystic Moods (for a Rainy Night)? The Mystic Moods Orchestra?
So out of obstinate curiosity, and looking for something new to hear, I pulled the "plum" from the bin... and opened it.
Egad! Messiaen! Who would have suspected? (Purple for passion, I guess.) Regardless of this rather ludicrous marketing gambit, what we have here is an otherwise intelligently-packaged collection of superb music by Messiaen (1908-1992), crowned by the glorious "L'Ascension" (Four Symphonic Meditations for Orchestra) and sprinkled by excerpted "gems" like the "Vocalise," "Garden of Love's Sleep" and "To Remain In Love." Even a die-hard, anti-compilationist (like me) cannot fail but to be moved by these--- dare I speak the word!--- MYSTICAL, serene, beautiful and devotional pieces that form the very core of the composer.
In the very kindest sense of the analogy, this CD is the musical equivalent of CLIFF NOTES (except we're not drudging through WUTHERING HEIGHTS, here). And my feeling is: For those not familiar with Messiaen, any appreciable method to enlightenment is fine, any approach valid.
This CD offers the gentlest of entrees into the sound world of Messiaen, and for this, alone, it must be enthusiastically recommended.

Insightful collection of sublime music.......2000-07-17
While Messiaen's music is finding increasing interest in recording and performance, it is still sometimes difficult "break the shell" to get to the heart of it. This disk not only serves the purpose of approaching his music, but itself provides a glimpse of the broad musical landscape, extraordinary tone color and inspiration in his writing. And the performance and production are first rate. A beautiful collection of music by one of the great composers of the last century.
Sounds like Debussy.......1999-09-28
Messiaen sounds like Debussy to me. I enjoyed this album very much and it seems to be a good introduction to his work. If you like meditative classical music, give this one a try.
