One of my Favorite CDs.......2004-02-19
In this wonderful collection of Shakespeare settings, Mr. Rolfe-Johnson creates a magical atmosphere using his unbelievable musicality and gorgeous, gorgeous voice! The songs themselves range from the sweet and charming "No more Dams!" to the heavenly interpretation of "She Never Told Her Love", but for me the high point of the whole CD is his incredible performance of the early version of Vaughan Willams' "Orpheus with his Lute"...this song alone is worth the price of the album! Mr. Rolfe Johnson is truly one of the worlds most exquisite tenors! A must have for every fan of English Song!
Melodious Shakespeare.......2001-01-24
This CD consists of a collection of settings of Shakespearian lines by composers ranging from the 18th to the mid-20th centuries. It is an ideal vehicle for finding a new way to enjoy these writings of Shakespeare and also experience the work of a number of British composers, some well-known and some not so well-known

Customer Reviews:
Van Gogh's ear for music . . ........2003-08-06
Oh dear, Mr Grondz. What a shame that you seem to have van Gogh's ear for music.
This is a glorious performance of Evensong. While I can't claim that the music sung on this disc would be my first choice for an Evensong at King's, the choir sings with its usual precision and poise. The introit (the Prayer of King Henry VI by Henry G. Ley) is superb, as is the chanting of the psalm.
No recording can ever do the "real thing" (Evensong in King's College Chapel) justice, but this comes pretty close.
Ouch--Bleeding Ears.......2003-05-14
First of all, I would like to make it very clear that I have a great respect for the English choral tradition; both for the composers and for the performers. I know first-hand the technical skills necessary to sing the music of the repoitoire; but I humbly have to find fault with this rendition of Evensong.
Part of the beauty of this style of recording is precisely that it is done "live", but as is admitted in the programme notes, some things were redone without the congregation on a different day. While this isn't blatantly obvious to the casual listener, I find it difficult because it compormises the integrity of the service and all of the little quirks that sometimes happen such as a cough or a sneeze. These kinds of things are a subtle reminder that music (especially in the service of God) is a production of human creativity. This disc is entitled "Choral Evensong from King's College" and thus isn't properly a concert, but worship; to "re-do" tracks seems inappropriate and perhaps even vain...so much for the "musical offering".
I was sadly disappopinted that the upper voices seemed shrill, especially in the verse-response sections at the beginning and the end of the service. At first I thought that the problem lay in my stereo, so I tried to adjust several times, all without satisfactory results. All that I received from this was a blistering headache caused by the boy-sopranos. The secret, my little choristers, isn't to "scream" the high notes, the secret is in proper breath support. Not having ever been to Cambridge, I would like to think that the acoustics of the chapel caused this inbalance in the choir; but perhaps that's too kind.
Finally to add injury to insult, a woman read the Gospel account of the Journey to Emmaus. This simply isn't my style.
A decent attempt overall; but in my opinion, not quite "English" enough for Evensong...
"The ethereal ebb and flow of King's".......2000-09-22
As someone who has spent many a wonderful occasion attending evensong inside King's College Chapel in Cambridge I highly recommend this glorious CD. King's College Choir under Stephen Cleobury our quite simply one of the finest choral ensembles singing today. The ambience of King's is perfectly captured here from the opening introit by Lay "A prayer for King Henry VI" to the glorious Anthem by Parry "Lord let me know mine end". I wholeheartedly recommend this beautiful disc.
"Epitome of Excellent English Choral Music".......2000-09-15
This CD in my opinion is excellent. It is usual in a live recording that the sound quality is not good, but in this CD, there is an exception. This was my only reserve when buying the CD, however my fears were unecessary. I very much recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys choral music and especially the music of the English Church.

Customer Reviews:
God must be an Englishman!.......2000-01-26
Parry was very similar to Elgar in style--although he was of an earlier generation. One cannot get more English in style than Parry: solid, majestic, and noble, at times a little pompous, but that's part of the music's charm. There is however nothing particularly original about his music though despite its overall attractiveness. I have two personal favorites from this CD: the "Great Service in D" has music that drifts along in an elegant and restrained way, and it is easy to picture oneself in a candlelit St. George's Chapel, Windsor surrounded by stained glass darkened by the night, gothic vaulting above, and carved oak choir stalls. When my choir sang "My soul, there is a country," I was very impressed by the way Parry shifts suavely between slow, contemplative duple meter and comforting and lilting triple meter. The harmonies are extremely rich in this piece. However, the other Songs of Farewell in my opinion seem a lot flatter in texture and less much interesting overall. Of course, all Anglophiles know "Jerusalem." However, because of the choir's high skill and relatively small size, the rendition seems somewhat "too polite" for a patriotic piece designed for a large, bombastic chorus and often orchestrated with brass and drums! However, kudos to St. George's Chapel Choir and its director.

Satisfying programme.......2001-01-07
This third volume in the extremely successful "English Anthem" series stands out as being one of the best programmes devised for it.
St. Paul's Cathedral Choir recorded it at about the same time that they made their Kenneth Leighton disc, hence the featured treble soloist on both is Thomas Colwell. His voice is particularly arresting, for instance, at the opening of Thomas Attwood's "Come, Holy Ghost" - by far the simplest work on the disc, within the grasp of even the smallest of choirs. At the other end of the spectrum is Robert Saxton's "At the round earth's imagined corners," commissioned by the choir in the early 90s, which is surprisingly effective and accessible compared to some of his (and his contemporaries) other works. As always with this series, the choir make these contrasted simple and complex works sound effortless.
Other works on the programme include Basil Harwood's "O how glorious is the Kingdom," William Harris's evergreen "Faire is the heaven," William Walton's exquisite and much-loved setting of "Set me as a seal" and one of Hubert Parry's "Songs of Farewell" - in this case, "There is an old belief." John Tavener's "Hymn to the Mother of God" makes a good impression here, although it's a pity that it's companion "Hymn for the Dormition of the Mother of God" is absent - the two are always presented together on recordings and were first performed together liturgically. "Turn back, O man" by Gustav Holst receives a most stirring rendition. The disc ends with Edward Elgar's very fine, cantata-like setting of Psalm 29, "Give unto the Lord," written for first performance at St. Paul's and sounding particularly glorious in the vast resonance of the building under the care of John Scott and his forces.
A worthy companion to the others in the series: well-recorded, beautifully performed and ingeniously devised. This is cathedral music at its best.

Customer Reviews:
The best in the series!.......2007-05-23
Recorded shortly before Mr. Scott took up his new (and equally prestigious) post at St Thomas Church, Fifth Ave., NYC, this disc is, in my opinion, the best in the whole English Anthem series. The program is remarkably varied, and includes a stunning rendition of Sheppard's "Libera Nos I". It is so stunning that I can't help wishing that more Renaissance music had been included in this series. The choir of St Paul's sings it so well! Also recorded on this disc is a brand new commission from Rutter, "A Crown of Glory", which is brilliantly spectacular. Mr. Scott is also featured as a composer here, and his truly beautiful "Behold, O God our Defender", which is very "Howells-esque". The Bairstow anthem, "Lord, I call upon thee", is highly atmospheric. HIGHLY atmospheric. At the words "as the incense in Thy sight", one almost smells the incense!
The singing on this CD is what makes it so uniquely magnificent. I have never heard the choir of St Paul's sound in such good voice. Their expression, tone, and accuracy has never been better. They have once again reaffirmed that they indeed are the "King of Cathedral Choirs".
This recording virtually defines the term "must-have"!

Soothing, Relaxing and Fulfilling.......2005-11-17
As I was driving home one evening, I was tuned into National Public Radio as "Faire is the Heaven" was played. The emotional outburst that followed immediately caused me to purchase this recording. It is simply heavenly. The tone quality and blend of these singers is amazing. Even on average computer speakers, the sounds will take you to a different place.
I highly reccomend this album.
"Journey to Heaven".......2000-12-20
The theme of this CD, "Blessed Spirit" is the music of heaven & our journey to heaven. You can tell John Rutter had a part in producing this beautiful music. It's an imaginary voyage, of course, with 18 selections presented here, and it is some of the most peaceful & beautiful music you might ever hear performed by the wonderful Clare College Choir. It's a inspiring collection of music from different eras and traditions. It's great to sit back, relax, and just let go and enjoy the music and beautiful voices of this choir. This is a follow-up to "Ilumina" , another great choral CD, and this marks the second appearance of the Choir of Clare College on this label. Highly recommended.

The first new recording of Vaughan Williams's magnificent Mass in G Minor in more than 10 years, this version from the Chicago-based His Majestie's Clerkes ensemble goes to the top of the list for its exceptional sound and for its solid, thoroughly musical performances. The program is filled out with first-rate renditions of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford's exquisite Op. 38 motets--favorites of choirs and audiences from the minute they were written-- and Hubert Parry's six Songs of Farewell, whose superbly crafted part- writing combines perfectly with the romanticized spirituality of the texts. Except for a brief lapse of intonation in the Vaughan Williams--not unusual even for the finest choirs--these are exemplary performances that make a good case for tempos generally more brisk than we may have heard before. --David Vernier
Album Description
The mixed choir His Majestie's Clerkes takes listeners to the heights of tonal beauty on this CD of rarely recorded, a capella music by three English Romantic composers of the early twentieth century -- Vaughan Williams, Stanford, and Parry. Best known to most concertgoers as a symphonist, Vaughan Williams is represented by a large-scale work for chorus, his Mass in G Minor (1922). The Chicago Tribune described the Clerkes' 1997 concert performance of this work as "rapt, strikingly beautiful . . . a genuinely moving experience." Sir Richard Terry, director of the Westminster Cathedral Choir and leader of the English a capella revival, called Vaughan Williams' mass "one of the greatest choral works of the century" for its fiery intensity and devotional spirit. Stanford's complete Three Motets, Op. 38, includes the beloved, oft-performed Beati quorum via, familiar to choral audiences and singers alike. On the new CD, listeners have the rare opportunity to hear the Beati along with its companion works, Justorum animae, and Coelos ascendit hodie. Parry's six searching, elegiac Songs of Farewell "represent his art at its deepest," notes The Penguin Guide to Compact Discs -- especially the poignantly intense and beautiful harmonies of At the round earth's imagined corners. The songs, based on Biblical psalms and English poems, are considered Parry's most inspired works. In the CD notes, Anne Heider, the Clerkes' artistic director, observes, "The motets have a crescendo of texture, from four parts in the opening work to five, six, seven, and finally eight parts in the last, and a concomitant crescendo of emotional intensity, culminating in the anguished searching of Psalm 39 ["Lord, let me know mine end"]."

Hear this Prayer.......2000-06-28
This CD entralled me. I was skeptical of a twenty-four member ensemble being able to effectively hold together the intricacies of Vaughan William's Mass in G minor, assuming that the work was more fit for 40 or 50 member groups. However, His Majesty's Clerkes do an excellent job of conveying the reverence and solemnity of the mass through their depth and tone and produce a volume greater than the sum of their parts. Even their tonality, which is a difficult function that most choirs have trouble meeting, is very well done. The same can be said of the rest of the works on this CD. Most musicians are familiar with the splendor of the Stanford works and His Majesty's Clerkes are certainly up to the task of confronting a set of works so well known and scrutinized. The Songs of Farewell are works I was previously unacquainted with but now find tremendous pleasure in listening to. Being that Vaughan Williams is my favorite composer, however, I always revert to the mass, for it is there that I believe the true essence of the title of this CD comes forward and makes itself known and prominent. A wonderful buy.
