Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful CD.......2007-06-30

This is an absolutely beautiful CD of some of Schumann's best music. All I can say is that I regret not hearing it earlier in my life - I've been missing out. Both Fischer-Dieskau and Brendel are very expressive and bring exceptional feeling and thought to the music. I have numerous Brendel recordings and think that this may be his finest playing.

I did a direct comparison of the Dicthterliebe with the famous Wunderlich recording and definitely prefer Fischer-Dieskau. While Wunderlich's voice is so smooth and beautiful, Fischer-Dieskau is in fine form vocally and just brings much more personality and emotion to the songs. Brendel is also a far superior accompanist, with his playing of the lyrical passages associated with nature being particularly noteworthy.

This is a must own if you are interested in Schumann or Romantic songs (seriously -- buy it immediately). If you don't know much about the genre but are interested in hearing some, I highly recommend this version.

3 out of 5 stars Brendel vs. Dieskau.......2001-04-24

It's time to vote who excels the most in this recording. I bought this recording prior to my recital to learn the interpretation of one of the greatest lieder singer. Personally, I did not like his interpretation. I had a sense that Dieskau seemed rushing. The singing is somewhat unstable. I gave this CD to my accompanist, and she said this was the best Dichterliebe recording she ever heard. She meant the Brendel part, not Dieskau. I recommend Wunderlich.

5 out of 5 stars Biased, yes, but this is a great CD.......2001-03-25

This CD was presented as a gift by a dear friend, and it's one of my favorite CDs now. I am a novice piano player, and Brendel is a tremenous accompanist being able to evoke his own personality and talent at the same time as being the backdrop to the jewel of Fischer-Dieskau's voice.

My friend asked for a copy of the CD, and I just couldn't do it. I mailed him a new original.

5 out of 5 stars What luck that we have this "transcendental" recording!.......1999-10-16

It couldn't get any better. The engineers, the piano player and singer all were "in the zone" when producing these songs. Brendel's playing raises the accompaniments to a concert quality exprierence. Fischer-Diskau: was still in his prime of voice (1985). Their reading of the "Dichterliebe" cycle includes surprising and totally convincing bending of tempi (for effect) that I've not heard before -- most obvious in "Ich Grolle Nicht" where the steady eighth notes of the accompaniment too often in other recordings result in a bland thumping above which the singer's efforts can rise to only modest heights. These guys spin gold out of "mere" lieder.

5 out of 5 stars Wow........1998-09-22

Buy this, read the translations, listen, and shed some tears. The poetry is timeless; Schumann is a genius, and the performers' interpretation is breath-taking. Unlike spoken German, the language when sung becomes gentle and earthily rich, almost preferable to a "romance" language. Powerful recording.

The texts used in these 32 songs are all by Heinrich Heine, a miniaturist poet whose unique, characteristic mixture of wistfulness and irony, often tinged with self-pity, was ideal material for the genius of that wistful, ironic musical miniaturist, Robert Schumann. Every lover of Lieder must regret that Franz Schubert did not discover Heine until he was dying and composed only a few Heine songs in his Schwanengesang. But that regret is mitigated by the fact that Schumann gave so much attention to Heine during the brief, intense period when he was focused on songwriting. Dichterliebe is one of the finest song cycles in the German language--surpassed, if at all, only by Schubert's Schoene Muellerin and Winterreise; and the other songs in this collection are comparable in quality. Bostridge's light, expressive voice captures every musical and emotional nuance, and Drake plays masterfully the virtuoso piano part. --Joe McLellan

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Liederkreis & Dichterliebe Schumann.......2007-07-02

I can't tell you how pleased I am with Mr. Bostridge's recording of Schumann: Liederkreis Op. 24, Dichterliebe
Op. 48 & 7 Lieder, I recently bought. It's such a delight listening to; the lightness, the precision
(and still there is a wonderful and continuous legato), the very selective use of vibrato (and thus
non-vibrato) as a means of expression, the treatment of the text, the perfect bel canto technique... Also my compliments to the excellent pianist, Julius
Drake; again, wonderfully played. Mr. Julias Drake and Mr. Ian Bostridge are a wonderful ensemble. When Mr. Bostridge stops, the singing is seemlessly continued by Mr. Drake.
I did not know Mr. Bostridge as a singer until I started looking for singers who had recorded `Dichterliebe'
and `Liederkreis' (Op. 39 BTW). Listening to a
few samples there conviced me to buy it. I can only say I am very grateful Mr Bostridge made this
recording. It means a great deal to me.

A final note: I firmly disagree with 'not my cup of tea'. I cannot agree with the assertion that
"The interpretation is flat, and does not have the depth that many German singers give to these songs." I own Dichterliebe sung by Quasthoff, Fischer-Dieskau, Fritz Wunderlich and Ian Bostridge (this recording).
By far I like Ian Bostridge's best. The interpretation is very delicate and the opposite of flat I would say. Flat is the interpretation of Quasthoff (although I highly respect him as a singer, but not particularly for his recording of Dichterliebe). The recording of Fischer-Diskau is quite interesting, musically speaking. Technically on the other hand I much prefer Ian Bostridge. Finally, the recordings of F. Wunderlich: I own both his final concert and a studio recording. Although the final concert recording is very bad, musically this one is by far surpassing the studio recording and is worth owning. What goes for the technique of Ian Bostridge goes for Mr. Wunderlich's; just wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Bostridge Good.......2006-11-10

Gramophone says Bostridge recording of the Schumann is best. He is great, but I prefer a baritone for this music.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully dramatic singing. Both artists perform with intelligence and unity........2005-11-16

Robert Schumann was a leader on many fronts of the Romantic movement in music. Not only a composer of genius, he was also a powerful writer and an insightful critic. Born in 1810, he began his music studies at age 8. He was a skilled pianist and began writing music for that instrument along the way. In 1840 he was given an honorary doctorate, wrote the Liederkreis (song cycle) op 24 on poems of Heine, and then married Clara Wieck. Schumann had a work style of focusing on a single form at a time. In 1840 he wrote a flood of songs, more than 150 of them, including the large song cycles included on this disk.

Heinrich Heine, a great German poet who remains highly regarded today, was an inspiration for many Romantic composers. Schubert only set a few of his poems simply because he did not become aware of Heine's work until he was already ill and dying. While Heine was thirteen years older than Schumann, they died the same year. In fact, Heine was born the same year as Schubert, although Schubert was born in January of 1797 and Heine in December.

The songs of opus 24 are about separation and longing. Nothing is ever a straightforward love song. This aching love is what attracted the Romantics. The poems are full of strong, but conflicted emotions and are written in a way that lends them well to musical settings. They tend to be short verses with a declamation that supports a singer's dramatic efforts and allows dramatic additions by the piano.

"Dichterliebe" (Poet's Love) opus 48 is one of the great song cycles ever written, probably after Schubert's masterwork's "Die Schöne Müllerin" and "Winterreise". While Schumann masterfully varies the songs so that it does not have the unremitting chill of Schubert's "Winterreise", it is a song cycle of lost love and ends with a desire for a coffin large enough to contain his love and sorrow.

There are other Schubert songs of Heine poems on this disk other than the two song cycles and they vary about topic, but are all full of drama and story telling of one kind or another. "Belsazar" opus 57 tells a story of the Babylonian king and the writing on the wall. "The Two Grenadiers" tells the story of two French soldiers captured by the Russians, one of whom dreams of fighting for his Emperor from the grave. There are several others.

I am a huge fan of Ian Bostridge. His voice is pure rather than light or colorless. (Colour, I suppose, since he is British.) His singing style is intelligent, very dramatic, and he varies its color depending on his interpretive purposes. He and Mr. Drake put on a wonderful recital of Schubert lieder here in Ann Arbor awhile back. They perform so wonderfully well together and I was surprised at the power, range, and control Mr. Bostridge has with his voice. It was one of the great afternoons of music I have ever experienced.

This is a wonderful CD and I recommend it strongly.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, not good........2005-10-20

I was pleased to buy a recording so well-received and was anxious to hear not only Dichterliebe, but the op. 24 Liederkreis. (This particular Liederkreis is considered by many to be the most underrated.)

It took me awhile to form an opinion, other than that I was nonplussed. The most famous moment, 'Ich grolle nicht', is a good example of a well-practiced but ultimately boring rendition of music that is simply beyond Bostridge's training or inclination or both. Yes, he hits all the notes with complete security, but there is no thrill, no conviction, no pain. All is very academic, as if grown in a hothouse or nurtured in a cloister. I agree with a previous reviewer that Bostridge's voice is perhaps better-suited to lighter, less passionate material. (I'm not familiar with his other recordings, but I might very much enjoy hearing him sing the music of Harty or Stanford.) His voice is thin, nasal, and with a very narrow color palette. It's a very good voice, but a very studied, calculated one that seems not to have internalized the text. I would prefer a few cracks or idiosyncracies rather than such a bloodless interpretation as this. Drake's accompaniment is a perfect match, and that's not much of a compliment. The recording's engineering is excellent, however.

Those looking for some excellent Schumann would do better to consider Terfel, Fischer-Diskau (despite transposition to lower keys), or the wonderful Wunderlich.

3 out of 5 stars My least favorite Liederkreis Op. 24.......2005-09-29

The winds of fashion are always changing, and they've definitely been blowing in the direction of Ian Bostridge, whose voice is not one I love or even tolerate for more than a few songs. He uses it intensely and artistically, but its native quality is a typcial "white" English tenor, light in tone, mostly projected form the head, and of an irritatingly nasal timbre--one is constantly reminded of an adolescent whose voice has just changed. People do seem to love it, especiallly the English, and Bostridge's fussy way with texts is also admired.

For anyone who isn't thrilled by him, there is an overlapping recital of Schumann's Heine songs--oddly enough, also on EMI--by Thomas Hampson at his very best with Wolfgang Sawallisch as accompanist. For a tenor version sung by someone with a much fuller voice and less mannered approach to the texts, there is Christoph Pregardien on RCA/BMG. Having owned all three, I was happy to toss out this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Truly inspired piano accompaniment!.......2006-06-04

Leon Fleisher's epilogue to Dichterliebe in "Die alten, bosen Lieder" alone would be worth the price of this disc! John Shirley-Quirk's diction of the German Heinrich Heine poems sounds idiomatic enough to my ear, by the way, that I understand every word (not so obvious as it may seem!), certainly more so than Charles Panzera's in the other best-accompanied Dichterliebe ever - the famous historical one with Alfred Cortot. If only Fritz Wunderlich had performed with a pianist of this caliber! But: you can't have everything, and Shirley-Quirk does as well as anyone in modern times - that he lacks a little in youthful freshness may be true, but honestly, who cares when the overall result is such a rare success?

Greetings from Switzerland, David.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-05-16

The two singers on this album have appeared on many excellent classical recordings. Perhaps, because they have not made many solo recordings, they do not have the name recognition they deserve. Their performances on this recording are outstanding and the sound quality of the recording captures voice and piano in a perfect balance. If you like lieder, you will treasure this album.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Baritone.......2000-04-29

We live in an era of great baritones--Hampson, Holzmaier, Skovhus, Terfel--to mention just a few. It is an international bonanza for lovers of the song literature. One can now firmly and safely add Quasthoff to this list. Although he has recorded a number of works, he was new to this listener but made me realize immediately what I had been missing. This is a deeply felt and remarkably performed CD. Its generous 70 minutes include many moments when one, no matter how frequently the music has been heard before, just listens in wonder. It is worth purchasing just for the 4 minutes of the song Belsatzar! The remaining 66 minutes are filled with singing that is just as wonderful. A must purchase for any fan of German art song. Also try his Schubert Winterreise and Mahler Knaben with Von Otter.

Quasthoff's rich baritone never fails to please. At once plaintive and commanding, his warm overtones enshroud the listener in the most divine light. Here the brilliant economy of Schumann's "Dichterliebe" is fully realized.

The beautiful lyric baritone of Matthias Goerne is, we hope, going to be around for a long time, especially when it makes possible recordings such as this. The young lieder artist gives outgoing, exceptionally engaging characterizations of these songs, supported by the wonderfully pointed pianism of Vladimir Ashkenazy. The 1997 recording is vivid and well balanced. --Ted Libbey

4 out of 5 stars Poor choice of accompanists.......2005-10-09

Goerne's rich and knowing singing is marred by Ashkenazy's intrusive, bombastic, and often vulgar playing. One wonders whether the record label foisted this pianist on the young singer as a way to promote their own artist.
Seven years hence it may be time for Goerne to re-record these masterworks, this time with a proper accompanist, not a specialist in Rachmaninov concertos, podium sitter, or other hammy scene stealer.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good, but not a revelation.......2005-09-24

Goern'es buttery voice that rarely places strong accents on any word lest the lyric line be broken isn't really my ucp of tea. He is a critical favorite now, and this CD is one of his better ones, since the pure lyricism of Schumann's writing in Dichterliebe suits his approach. But I owuld rank him about at the level of Wolfgang Holzmeier--a pleasant, sincere, accomplished artist--rather than one of the great or potentially great lieder interpreters on the level of Thomas Quasthoff or Peter Pears.

5 out of 5 stars The hottest lieder singer.......2001-04-24

First thing first, buy it and you'll never regret it!!! What a perfect combination. The soothing lyric baritone accompanied by the one of the greatest pianist. From Goerne's voice and Ashkenazy's performace, you hear Schumann's eternal promise for his love and dedication to his beloved Clara. Liederkreis is another exceptional recording. Buy it and Shed some tears as you listen. You don't need translations. It's all in music. Listen to it from your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Schubert from a First-Rate Baritone.......2001-03-16

Matthias Goerne's rendition of Schubert's Dichterliebe is moving and poignant, and at times achingly beautiful. What is most impressive is that he achieves this without ever sacrificing technique, diction, or phrasing, all of which are perfectly suited to the mood and to the music. I can only venture to guess that the few negative reviews of this CD are from listeners who have listened hastily or carelessly. One seems to suggest that Goerne's voice has a muddy quality, which is as far off the mark as one could be; Goerne's voice is gorgeous, smooth, and rich without ever being muddy, and he sings with an ease that never turns sloppy or lazy. One can quibble about Ashkenazy's accompaniment, which could be more sensitive, I suppose, but the attraction here is the sheer beauty of Goerne's voice. I could listen again and again.

4 out of 5 stars Unusually good installment in Johnson's global coverage of lieder.......2006-05-11

Graham Johnson has picked up and surpassed Fishcer-Dieskau's ambition to cover all things lieder in the world. As an archivist and writer of liner notes Johnson is impeccable. As a musician, though, he tends to be conventional and timid. He often sounds like a librarian cataloguing another item into the index. Lovers of art song can't afford to bite the hand, however. Johson's versions of Schubert and Schumann fall somewhere between the heights of Schwarzkopf and the depths of the journeyman singers in the Naxos lieder series.

Vol. 8 in Hyperion's complete Schumann cycle is a nice high point. None of hte performers are inspired. Padmore is a poor man's Bostridge, Maltman a poor man's Thomas Hampson. Yet both are accomplished artists--far ahead of the earnest but unfinished Lemalu. Maltman gives us a more than respectable Liederkreis Op. 24, hampered mainly by Johnson's routine accompaniment, and Padmore dispatches a handful of unknown early songs, most of them conventional but with moments of melodic or dramatic inspiration. As always with Johnson, no performance will stand comparison with the best, but the musicianship here deserves respect.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique and Wholly Satisfying Schumann Recital.......2006-02-08

It is rare on recordings to have lieder recitals by three individual soloists all under the guidance by one collaborating pianist. But such is the case in this beautifully programmed, performed and engineered CD.

The three gentlemen singers are each well established in their various specialties (except perhaps newcomer Lemalu who seems destined to be well known soon). Tenor Mark Padmore, baritone Christopher Maltman and bass baritone Jonathan Lemalu are each accompanied by the curator of this recital, the exceptional pianist Graham Johnson. Together they present twenty-three songs by Robert Schumann without resorting to cycles. Each song seems to have been selected to suit the gifts of the performers as well as the content of the recital.

Maltman and Padmore are well recorded in many different styles of music while Lemalu is rather new on the scene (his solo albums are worth seeking out as they hold great promise1). The singers are of the type that respects the poetry as well as the music and the level of communication is high. This is a fine installment in Johnson's survey of Schumann's works and stands well on its own as an exceptional recital. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 06

4 out of 5 stars Variable Schumann Works Performed by Three Powerful Voices.......2005-05-29

Three superb singers, two established and one fast rising, are the chief sources of pleasure on this recording of composer Robert Schumann's works, part eight of an extensive Schumann series pulled together by pianist and musical archivist Graham Johnson. The centerpiece of the program is "Heine Liederkreis" given a polished and thoughtful reading by baritone Christopher Maltman, who is most familiar to me as part of an even more stellar trio on a superb 2002 recording of Benjamin Britten's "Canticles" with countertenor David Daniels and tenor Ian Bostridge. Here, Maltman handles Heine's descriptive poetry with eloquence. He is alternately powerful and plangent depending on the mood of the song, all the while providing just the right emphasis on the animated text while Johnson accompanies expertly.

Tenor Mark Padmore, whom I just saw perform the title role in a concert version of Handel's "Samson", dominates the early pieces that precede the Liederkreis song cycle. He displays fine technique and clear German diction in his performances, though Schumann's juvenilia are not nearly as resonant as his later work. To my ears, the high points of this portion are "Der Fischer", a somewhat melodramatic duet between Padmore and Maltman based on a poem by Goethe, and "Erinnerung", which flows masterfully over the slight lyrics provided by Jacobi's memory poem. The third section of songs is made up of Schumann rarities beginning with bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu's touching performance of "Dem rotten Röslein gleicht mein Lieb" based on Robert Burns' "My love's like a red, red rose". His voice has a booming quality tempered by a genuine feel for the songs from the energetic "Der frohe Wandersmann" to the choral pieces, "Die rote Hanne" and Der deutcher Rhein". He especially shines on "Trost im Gesang", a stately ballad for a traveling knight. With his stentorian, bell-like tones, this rising New Zealand-born Samoan singer sounds even more like a native German than the comparatively experienced Maltman and Padmore. The comprehensive booklet written by Johnson tends to meander quite a bit about the history of the songs, though it is worth reviewing as you listen.
