About the Artist
Thirty years ago, a volunteer with the Seattle Public Schools placed a harp in Bronn’s hands for the first time and began teaching the 11 year old boy how to play. He advanced rapidly, and soon moved on to study with harpist Edith Lundgren. By the time he was 16, he was performing professionally in fine hotels and restaurants in the Seattle area. After high school, Bronn was accepted to the School of Music at the University of Washington where he received instruction from Pamela Vokelek. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1985. Bronn’s musical accomplishments are known and appreciated throughout Washington State and the Northwest. His amazing versatility and humorous approach to a seriously classical instrument have made him a favorite with concert goers. "Because of the experience of playing in a variety of settings, I am very comfortable playing in many different styles," comments Bronn, and his concert selections range from classical to Broadway to hymns. Bronn has even played the National Anthem at Seattle Seahawk and Sonics games!

Since 1995, former Byrd-man Roger McGuinn has been posting a song each month on the Folk Den (www.mcguinn.com) to celebrate and spread the traditional repertoire that launched his musical life in the '50s. Now he revisits 18 of those songs on a collaborative, home-recorded CD, singing and picking his banjo and 12-string guitar alongside stalwart folkies like Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Jean Ritchie, Odetta, and next-generation talents Eliza Carthy and Josh White Jr. The approach is decidedly old school--warbly voiced, polite, and deferential toward their sources--and the results uneven, with high points like the ballad "Wagoner's Lad" (with Baez and Carthy) and low ones like the listless blues of "In the Evenin'" (with Seeger). These "treasures" are unlikely to win new fans for the pre-singer-songwriter age of folk music, but they will provide pleasant melodies, and maybe memories, for the already converted. --Jeffrey Pepper Rodgers

Yes, I really enjoy to listen to this record, although it is a few steps back to what Mr. McGuinn has achieved in the past. He finally gets his chance here to sing along with the very people, that he was never allowed to share vocals with way back then. It must have hurt him badly, and this album makes up for it. Fair enough. It is sort of ironic after all, that the master mind of Acid Rock winds up singing "Whiskey In The Jar". Have a laugh!

Preservation efforts deserve respect. They typically reflect an individual's commitment, rarely are profit-driven, and ideally are educational as well as entertaining.

On the classical side, an excellent example is Itzhak Perlman's ongoing archiving of kletzmer music. On the 'musical comedy' side, there is Naxos' remarkable remastering of the 1950 D'Oyly Carte (post-war) monaural recordings of the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas.

However, both of these examples offer something 'Treasures' seriously lacks--interesting content and consistent quality. For anyone outside the extreme 'traditionalist' fold, the songs are sleep-inducing, and the track-to-track quality is shaky--a nasty surprise, given the cast of characters. Worst of all, the album lacks the one forgiving element many of us desire who are old enough to remember when the producer wasn't 'Roger' but 'Jim'--complex but focused guitar arrangements.

McGuinn should not underestimate the risk he's taking. By devoting himself so disproportionately to recording traditional tunes so that 'people remember them', he's in danger of everyone forgetting HIM. He'd be well advised to get back in the studio, plug in the Ric, find a lyricist and start creating. The personal assets he has during performances--creativity, charm and audience rapport (and good looks for a guy his age)--don't carry him here.

To hear the two guys who got me into music picking and harmonizing together on Dink's Song had me unexpectedly in tears. I've been playing it nonstop and pushing it on everyone in listening distance. It's an incredible cut off an incredible album. If you like the Alan Lomax collection on Rounder, you'll love this. Just push the proper buttons on your computer and go ahead and buy it. You can also get the chords from the website and play along! Always wanted to hear these guys together. Praise God!

Having been a fan of the Mills Brothers for five decades, this compilation places them in a completely different avenue in my admiration of their works ... and it's not their fault!

Beginning with their unbeatable performances on Decca Records and, later, blessing us with those super charged renditions on DOT, the Mills boys have always been in that special category, labelled as: GREAT! However, this fizzy collection is simply not the group that consisted of Harry, Herbert and Donald (In the beginning, there was their brother, John, and, after John's untimely passing, their dad, "Skipper"). Perhaps the singers on this dabby disc are relatives of the original team ... but there is a most noticeable difference. Obviously recorded before a "live" audience, the short takes on such tunes as "Blueberry Hill", "Bye-Bye Blackbird" and "The Tiger Rag" are full embarrassments. And when you hear this bunch blab the Mills' signature song, "Paper Doll", you realize "something is haywire"!

There is no reference to "live-performance" on the CD label, and there are no "liner-notes". The purchaser should have been advised that these are not the authentic Mills Brothers! It's certainly noticed when the lead singer can't hold the notes of purity and excitement the original singers, all deceased, were noted for.

This CD should be taken from the "available" list. At least, it shouldn't be mixed in with the "real stuff".

The Mills Brothers were the best to be heard. This CD is an insult to their golden reputation.

I disagree with the reviews I have read of this CD. I think it's fabulous, in fact I bought a second one for my mother. It's true that the sound quality is not up to today's standard, but that's part of the charm; it creates a real nostalgia. I also enjoyed the recordings of the live performances -- makes you want to dust off your zoot suit and join the crowd! I thnk this version is one of the most upbeat in tempo and style, and I highly recommend it.

In my opinion, this is not in anyway, shape or form; any configuration past, present, or future, an authourized recording by The Mills Brothers. If a recording like this was released under the name and likeness of Frank Sinatra (may he rest in peace) it would be considered a crime scene. As for the Ink Spots, I am not sure whose protecting their reputation, but I beleive the originals would turn in their graves! Perhaps a different title could be used for this recording. I suggest "The Butchering of Great Artists". If this was medicine, someone would be sued for malpractice.

This is a lousy recording with crowd noise, bad recording levels, and terrible quality. I am sorry I bought it and have since gone with a better "classic" collection which better represents these fantastic harmonists. Do NOT buy this CD! unless you hate the Mills Brothers.

I am very disappointed with this CD. The quality is awful. Some of the songs sound like they were played back on a 78 RPM Victrola into a cheap tape recorder.

Some of the tracks are recordings of live appearances, probably later in their careers, so they really don't represent their original talents.

If I had known that many of the tracks were recorded live, and of such low quality, I probably would not have ordered the CD.

Bottom line: if you want original recordings that represent the true talents of these groups, look for a different CD.
