Album Description

Capturing the improvisational energy the band would soon become famous for, WAR's debut with Animals frontman Eric Burdon burst on the scene and on the charts with the erotic, Latin-tinged hit "Spill The Wine." For rock icon Burdon it was a dream come true, blending his powerful vocal style with a raw and creative blues band. Standout tracks include "Vision Of Rassan," "Blues For Memphis Slim," and the simmering soul revamp of John D. Loudermilk's blues classic "Tobacco Road."

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have Album in your Collection.......2006-11-27

If I were trapped on a deserted island for the rest of my life, and could only have 10 albums with me....This would be one of them!

3 out of 5 stars Burdon's hippie logic gets in the way of War.......2006-04-05

It's quite disturbing that War's sound wasn't showcased more in Eric Burdon (The Animals) & War's 1970 MGM debut. Even though Eric Burdon declares "War" yielded the smash hit Spill The Wine, you're hard pressed to remember anything you've heard on this LP other than bits and pieces of Eric Burdon's endless ramblings. And that's a shame, because what you have here backing up Burdon's ego and face time is a damn good band.

Burdon's hippie rhetoric reaches sweltering highs and catastrophic lows under the guidance of Jerry Goldstein's production. The pompous Tobacco Road would have been much better in single mode. Instead it's presented here in long form (I Have A Dream version), thus making the road seem like a long and exhaustive black top. Roll On Kirk minus the Dedication is another example. The band close out the set with the gem You're No Stranger, which just so happens to be worth the price of admission alone.

5 out of 5 stars Declaring WAR..........2005-10-28

I have loved this disc ever since hearing the opening piano part on "The Vision of Rassan". What an opening! There have been very few times where the beginning of a CD commands my attention like this one does. Its interesting to hear War in their early stages and how Eric Burdon influenced their musical approach. Burdon's voice is in top form and his raspy blues tone is in full effect. His influence is apparent on songs like "Blues For Memphis Slim". Of course, "Spill The Wine" is the best known song off this one, but overall this is a great album.

3 out of 5 stars ok cd.......2003-08-24

Very experimental cd. Too different musical styles combined. The only real reason to buy this cd is for "spill the wine".

5 out of 5 stars Mott declares War.......2001-05-25

"We the people have declared war against the people for the right to love each other". Personally I prefer the second title, but then record companies can be such picky people. Eric Burdon & War was one of those unstable combinations that throws out sparks and heat even as it heads toward meltdown. Looking back it seems amazing that the team up of a British Blues / rock singer, a freaked out Danish harmonica player and an L.A. - based R & B / Jazz / Latin sextet came together at all. Their mixture of ethnic background & musical influences created a sound that was as hard to classify as exciting as it was to listen too. Eric Burden & War ran that fine line between genius & total excess as their star blazed a fluorescent trail across the musical stratosphere. The brief career only lasted two years & two albums, (1969 - 71) during this brief time together they performed with a sense of daring, risk, imagination, & adventure. "Eric Burdon declares War" was the first & most successful of the two albums, (the other "Black Man's Burdon" being released the following year) recorded after nearly a year of touring, the band went in and laid down what they were playing on stage with very little overdubs & plenty of ad-libbing. The music captures the kinetic inter play between Burdon & his band mates. Their ability to communicate with and improvise off each other gives "Declares War" its power & its glory. The tension between Burdon's unpredictable nature, War's polished instrumental skills, and Lee Oskar's reckless jamming harmonica runs through the music. Burdon was an artist with a definite message, and working with a multi-racial band was part of his statement. "War" wasn't a name to be chosen lightly in 1969 (or now come to that) it acknowledged both cultural & artistic conflicts & challenged audiences to deal with such issues, at least that's my slant looking at the monikers meaning. The free flowing approach of the album starts immediately with first cut "The Vision Of Rassan" with its name checks to Charlie Parker & John Coltrane, this was the bands tribute to jazz reed player Roland Kirk, and wets the musical palate for what is to come. From there, Burdon leads the band into an expanded exploratory version of Tobacco Road, that had previously been a hit for the Nashville Teens, but not much of their version remains as Burdon uses the lyric as a springboard for an odd erotic sermon, nailed down by War's tight supporting play.

The albums best known track "Spill The Wine" is a Latin tinged daydream of a song which became a number 3 in the U.S.A & a number one in the rest of the world. "Mother Earth" an old blues standard gives us the main theme for the 13 minutes of "Blues For Memphis Slim". As the band coasts along, Burdon expounds upon sex, birth, & morality, stepping aside to allow Charles Miller & then Lee Oskar to strut their stuff. The albums concludes with the vocal workout "Your No Stranger" a nice return to normality after what has gone before. The following year the partnership dissolved, fortunately the music they recorded survives, a remarkable combination of divergent ancestries and united talents. Mott the Dog.

5 out of 5 stars Madhouse 8 = Prince In A Jazzy Mood!.......2006-03-10

'Madhouse 8' (1987, Paisley Park/WEA) is a SUPER RARE collectable for Prince fans, without question! Back in 1986-1987, Prince was behind so much music (including Madhouse, Jill Jones, Mazarati, Sheila E, as well as his own CDs!), and 'Madhouse 8' is still a breath of fresh air. Madhouse was comprised of Prince, Eric Leeds, Dr.Fink, Levi Seacer Jr, John Lewis, and the great Sheila E. This rhythm section created 8 jazz tracks, but the radio friendly 'Six' just had Prince written all over it (just Funky!). As for 'Madhouse 8', it's 8 tracks don't justify the cost of the CD ($25.00 and up!), so I expanded it with a few RARE bonus tracks! Collectors should try adding the following songs for a better experience:

9. Six (End Of The World Remix)
10. Six 1/2 (B-Side)

I also created a special 2 on 1 CD featuring BOTH 'Madhouse 8' & 'Madhouse 16', plus a BONUS TRACK from 1988, 'Madhouse 17'(Penetration). It's a shame Warner Brothers won't reissue this great music, but if you're going to invest in 'Madhouse 16' (or any of these rare CDs!), you should get more out of it! 'Madhouse 8' showed is a very interesting chapter from the glorious past of Paisley Park! NJOY!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! Great For Prince Fans! NOT worth $100!.......2005-06-05

To sell this item at this price should be outlawed. Buy the vinyl if you REALLY must own it.

It is a must have for ALL Prince fans, as it is a magnificent album and features Prince in one of those musically shifting phases. This stuff essentially leads up to Parade and what follows. BUT you can find the vinyl for about $9.00.

It's instrumental jazz/ funk fusion. Nicely done, but I reiterate that $100 is highway robbery.

Hopefully NPG does a reissue one day.

5 out of 5 stars classic prince.......2004-09-22

when i was in germany i picked this album up. still one of my fav prince albums. alot of people really slip on his pure genuise. but the true fan knows m jackson an all the wanna bes that came after the purple one, cant hold a candle to him. mj was bad...but prince is a king.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!.......2004-09-07

'Madhouse 8' is an unbelievable album! All the more so after one learns that Madhouse is actually....PRINCE?That's right-
Madhouse was an outlet for his royal badness's more abstract,
jazzier experiments! Each song is numetrically titled and features a blizzard of great instrumental chops, notably Prince's
jazzy piano work! For anyone with any doubt as to Prince's
credibility as one of the most eclectic artists in the past half
century PICK THIS UP!I was lucky enough to optain the even RARER
vinyl edition of this album and I will say aside from it's
great album cover this all instrumental record is something that
Warner Brothers should reissue ASAP (or Prince should on NPG)
because it's an example of what a purely brilliant musician
Prince really is outside his better known pop persona!

4 out of 5 stars Burdon becomes Black-Man's burden.......2006-04-09

Here we're offered a clean and more polished Burdon backed up by some of the greatest musicians of the day. The Black-Man's Burdon didn't produce any hits, but it did showcase the raw power of War itself. Although Burdon's rhetoric is held somewhat in check here, it still manages to get in the way of the band at times on this 1970 MGM release. Eric Burdon & War's second offering (a double LP) would also be their last together. Burdon would never sound this poignant in his career again, and Spill The Wine (from Burdon declares "War") would be remembered as the only relevant material Burdon performed in the post-Animals era.

A point worth mentioning is that it's War's noodling (The Bird And The Squirrel and Nuts, Seeds & Life) in the wake of the classic Beautiful New Born Child that hold your attention. Setting you up for the relentless Out Of Nowhere (that should've been released as a single). In the twilight of the hippie era Jerry Goldstein produced some of the most social and introspective material of the year. Gun hints at a country sick and tired of the Vietnam conflict, while Sun/Moon soothes the listener for the pop sounding Pretty Colors. War's innovative fusion sound would carry them through the entire decade of the 70's, producing a string of 8 gold records in a row.

4 out of 5 stars war rocks.......2005-02-17

Eric Burdon can be a little annoying on some of the tracks, he seems a little full of himself. But when he works with War in a more integrated fashion, it is a fantastic match. The song cycle of Pretty Colors, Jimbo and Gun is one of the most powerful marraiges of psychedelia and soul ever. Feel the heat rise.

The cover of "Paint It Black" is also really cool, but a little out there with the wacky Burdon lyrics. Recommended album!

2 out of 5 stars Boring.......2004-01-21

This is the worst of the 3 albums Eric made with War. Way too long songs that keep on repeating themselves. The Paint It Black Medley is explosivly energetic, and makes at least disc 1 wort to own. The relatively short track 'Out Of Nowhere' is also found here with a lot of deep lyrics. The rest of the album is just too boring to me. Eric himself hates this album, and so do I (almost). The other two albums, Love Is All Around and Eric Burdon Decleares War, is much better. Especially Love Is All Around.

3 out of 5 stars Just one outstanding song........2002-10-11

I bought this CD only for "They Can't Take Away Our Music," which is a very powerful and beautiful song about black music in America. It got a fair amount of radio play at the end of 1970, which is when I started liking it. Interestingly, I still have never heard a single comment about what African-Americans thought about this song. I'm white and I love the song. The rest of the album was definitely disappointing, although a few songs have a nice Caribbean sound with guiro, like "Pretty Colors." The cover songs "Paint It Black" and "Nights in White Satin" are pointlessly long, too loosely structured, and add no new interest; they seem like trashy afterthoughts meant only as filler. However, Eric Burdon does all these songs with soul and seriousness, so the album's not really bad, just not very commercial.

The original Yippie, Abbie Hoffman left little room for compromise. His combative activism eventually forced him underground and guaranteed him a place in the lexicon of alternative Sixties culture. The soundtrack features both original 1960s protest music from Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe and the Fish and remakes of classic songs from an impressive list of modern musicians. The reinterpretations are strong. Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow belt out the Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" with a punk edge. Bonnie Raitt has never sounded more relaxed, underlining the somber sentiments of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" with a gentle, tremolo-ed guitar. Dylan's farewell to protest, "My Back Pages," is given a majestic reading by Joan Osborne and Jackson Browne, with a funereal organ haunting the track. Most appropriate is Ani DiFranco covering Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" with her usual dose of idiosyncrasy. --Rob O'Connor

4 out of 5 stars Steal Track #1?.......2007-07-07

This is generally just an OK soundtrack - except for the 1st song "Time Has Come Today" by Sheryl Crow and Steve Earle which is just.. phenomenal. IMHO, it is one of the great covers of all time and alone is worth the cost of the CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of those rare soundtracks..........2004-09-27

This is one of those rare soundtracks that actually has vision, direction and cohesiveness. It consists mostly of updated versions of classic songs. Steve Earle & Sheryl Crow team up for the Chambers Brothers classic "Time". Other interesting team-ups are Joan Osborne & Jackson Browne covering Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" and Eric Clapton, Billy Preston & Ringo Starr doing John Lennon's "Power to the People". Bonnie Raitt does a beautiful cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue". Ani DiFranco covers two songs, Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" and Phil Och's "When I'm Gone". Timothy B. Schmidt rocks with CS&N's "Carry On". And last but not least, Mary Chapin Carpenter does a very bluesy and sexy version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" that would have been a great single at AAA formats. There are also a few originals - Phil Och's: I Ain't Marching Anymore, Country Joe and the Fish: Superbird & Fell Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag, and Edwin Starr: War.

4 out of 5 stars Quality Covers.......2003-01-04

This is a soundtrack which updates some classic songs and brings back a few golden oldies. For me, the greatest hit is the absolute blow your socks off version of "Power to the People" which Eric Burdon and Billy Preston nail. Besides being an unlikely pairing, the two give what was a second-tier John Lennon song red carpet treatment that rivals the master musician's with Burdon's empassioned vocals and Preston's pounding keyboards! Equally as magical is Bonnie Raitt's cool bluesy reading of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." "The highway is for gamblers ... take what you have gathered from coincidence," she croons magically. I have this tune recorded by Joan Baez, the Byrds, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Barry McGuire, the Animals and of course, the songwriter. Raitt shines! The other Dylan pairing with Jackson Browne and Joan Osborne's version of "My Back Pages" is weighted only by Steve Earle's somber organ throughout the piece. Mary Chapin Carpenter's wacky version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" is also making me hit for the repeat button with her little warble, "I'm just mad about 14; she's just mad about me." Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow do a great job of "Time Has Come Today"; and it's interesting to hear the female vocal on the song. The Phil Ochs track and Country Joe's "Fixing" track are thematically essential for the film and sound great. All in all, this is a soundtrack that has great focus and unity. U snooze U lose! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Abbies Best.......2000-10-11

As I was actually in this movie.. as an extra. I am pleased to tell you & your readers.. Its a Great sound track to an excellent Movie.. watch for me in the fountain with the topless girls Im throwing a Frisbee with them. Thanks for this Oportunity, Don

4 out of 5 stars Soundtrack for Multiple Generations.......2000-08-07

This CD works for more than those of us who were teenagers when this music was first released. The Steve Earle/Sheryl Crow collaboration (Time Has Come Today) is a more contemplative treatment of this song. Bonnie Raitt shines (It's All Over Now, Baby Blue) with a bluesy, heartfelt rendering of this Dylan classic. Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe & The Fish are here for authenticity, to balance the "newness" of Ani DiFranco, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Joan Osborne. I applaud the artist selection as more daring than would have been expected.

See the soundtrack for "1969" for a collection of original songs and associated artists from this era.

I've had this disc for a number of years as well as all of Eric Gale's albums. He remains one of my all time favorite guitar players. I had the pleasure of meeting Eric twice in the early 80's
as a former co-worker was a close personal friend.Eric brought a uniqueness to the guitar that nobody has ever duplicated. Hearing him live was a great treat. I last saw Eric in the 90's when he was
in Tom Scott's band. This is a great disc. I was deeply saddened when Eric passed away in May, 1994. I was so glad I was able to see
him live a few years earlier.

5 out of 5 stars One bad dude.......2004-11-08

This CD combo contains some of the finest works of one the late great jazz guitarist Eric Gale, he performs true expression in his own unique state of harmonial bliss.

Teamed up with the likes of Grover Washington Jr, Gary King, Richard Tee, Ralph McDonald and others, and with producer Bob James behind the wheel, they play flawlessly together, the string and horn arrangements are excellent and can be lead solos in their own right.

Each cut has its own flavor, fast or slow tempos, no two are alike, taking you form one thought to another. My personal favorite is She is my Lady, it sounds like you can hear Eric saying the title of the cut with his guitar. When he breaks loose on his solos, you find yourself in a state of nothing else matters with your head bopping. All the cuts keep you wanting more.

This is definitely a bargain getting two of his best albums for the price of one. A must have for your contempory jazz collection.

4 out of 5 stars Some missed opportunities.......2007-01-05

These two albums originally surfaced in England on the Elektra Musician Label in 1982. I had hoped at some stage that there would have been a coherent attempt to re-release the material from the label in a sequential way as there are lots of the albums with music that, judging from my original vinyl copies, have stood the test of time well. These two were such albums, and despite the misgivings of some reviewers about the content, since there wasn't a category called 'smooth jazz' in England at the time, these were at the forefront of a genre that has subsequently burgeoned into a recognisable format. On both albums Gale fronts bands that were full of excellent musicians. My pick from "Blue Horizon" would be "Wait until the City sleeps", "Call me at the same number" and "97th and Columbus". On "Island Breeze" I'd pick "Boardwalk" and the title track ( which I used as the title for a radio show I presented on Sunday afternoons in 1982!). My gripe about this, and the reason for the reduced star rating, is that in re-releasing it opportunities have been missed in presentation. Firstly it doesn't sound as though it's been remastered in any way, secondly the albums are presented out of chronlogical order and finally the packaging is erring on the side of shoddy, with a reprint of the inner sleeve from "Island Breeze" but no details at all of the recording place or date, whilst of "Blue Horizon" there's no details at all. So I'm really pleased to have this available on CD, but with a plethora of excellent reissues that give 'value added' I feel slightly short changed. The music is 5*, but I expect a better overall product from a premium priced CD.

4 out of 5 stars Jazz at it's best.......2006-07-14

This dual cd is like time travel, as you sit and listen it takes you "back to the day". If you love Jazz or if you are an Eric Gale fan; this cd will not disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Purely a nostalgia trip.......2005-06-14

I had high expectations for this reissue from the 80s. Sadly, they were not met. What we've got here is slightly better than average jazz lite. It's a shame Eric Gale, a truly gifted guitarist, chose to place himself in such unchallenging settings.

I do have somewhat of a soft spot for these two discs, not unlike what I feel about the two Bob James/Earl Klugh discs, One on One and Two of a Kind, from around the same period. These, and Nocturnal Playground by Russ Freeman, were some of the first instrument records approaching real jazz that I'd ever heard. I soon found that, for me, jazz lite was a musical dead end, and I transitioned into authentic improvised music.

This two-in-one package gets an extra star because of Gale's mastery, the inclusion of drum legend Freddie Waits (Nasheet's dad), and the fact that you get two sessions for the price of one. But be forewarned: fans of real jazz will likely find these sessions too saccharine for their tastes. More like *** to ***1/2.

5 out of 5 stars The Late Great Eric Gale........2005-06-05

Eric Gale was easily the most sought after studio guitarist of his generation. During the 60's, 70's and 80's his guitar licks were heard everywhere. Just read the liner notes of your old LP'S, and you will see he was in the studio with such names as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Van McCoy, George Benson, Grover Washington, Dave Gruisin, Joe Cocker, Peter Tosh, and the list goes on and on. Eric Gale was a diverse guitarist who could play Jazz, Disco, Rock/Fusion and R&B when called upon. He also played with his own Jazz/Rock Fusion band called STUFF during the 70's and 80's, with such players as Richard Tee, Steve Gadd, Cornell Dupree, Gordon Edwarrds and Chris Parker. Eric Gale released several solo recordings over the years, and for the first time "Island Breeze", has been released in CD format. It is packaged with "Blue Horizon", his other Elektra Records release from the 80's. The listener will find that these two smooth Jazz like releases, from the grand champion of studio guitarist's, a real delight. One listen to the high octane Stuff like instrumental '97th and Columbus", from the "Blue Horizon" CD will be enough to win the first time Eric Gale listener over. It was always a pleasure to go to Mikells Jazz club in New York City on 97th and Columbus ave during the 70's and 80's and listen to Eric Gale play either by himself or with his group Stuff. Although in college at the time, I realized I was listening to a real behind the scenes musical legend, and I hope all of you will discover the joy of Eric's magical guitar, by seeking out anything that remains in print from his catolog. Eric Gale passed away in 1994, but remains in my eyes one of the true unsung giants of the music industry, who deserves to be recognized by the Rock n Roll HOF by inducting him into their studio musicians wing. He was as good as you get.

5 out of 5 stars The furious fusion of Garaj Mahal.......2005-10-19

Garaj has been blessing my brain for some time now. What makes them so great? The parts; Fareed Haque on guitar is blazingly fast but always has swing, Kai Eckhardt on the bottom with the fattest tone, Alan Hertz with his supple and elastic drums that can snap a song into pure greatness, Eric Levy on keys, soulful.
But the whole is more than the sum; Garaj Mahal has a furiousness to their playing that brings to mind an express train. Their sound can dominate the synapses like no other band.

    5 out of 5 stars A perfect enthno-jazz CD.......2003-12-10

The talents of Garaj mahal are enough to entertain anyone who enjoys the funkier variations of jazz, but this CD features a very special guest: Zakir Hussain on tablas! He adds such a mystical, trancendental quality to the complex rhythms of the band. The best things about electric jazz and global percussion are found on this disc!!!

5 out of 5 stars Funky and Fine Music!!!!!!.......2006-08-10

This is one of the hottest albums I've ever heard from anyone in the jazz world today! The opening cut "Easy Street" is a soulful treat with an R & B flavor. Eric's sax is right out front in "Tuesday's Delight". "New Jack Saturday" is a cooker! "Glow" smolders with passion. "Half & Half" is a funky trip that you don't want to end! There is nothing finer than hearing Eric play the ballad "Bourriquot". "Secret Passage" has its own sensuous feel with a soulful mix.

Eric Marienthal is comfortable playing smooth jazz, R & B, or classic jazz. His talent is far beyond his peers of today. The respect that he has received from the music community speaks for itself. He has played with Chick Corea, David Benoit, Lee Ritenour, George Kahn, The Rippingtons, Keiko Matsui, Anita Baker, and other renowned artists of today. An internationally respected talent, Eric has successfully toured the U.S., Europe, and Asia with great admiration of his talent. He crosses all cultures with his interpretations. Start with this one and sample his other cds as well for the proof!

5 out of 5 stars Mellow out with this music.........2000-05-27

I discovered Eric Marienthal by accident. While visiting my children in southern Spain, I was left on my own, and decided to read awhile and listen to music. It was a soft sunny day, and I wanted something relaxing but soulful to reflect my "on vaction" mood. I did not recognize any of the CD's these 30-something kids owned (I listen to George Winston, and/or Classical quartet and quintet music by Shubert, Mozart, et al.--they don't).

I decided to listen to this CD because the fellow playing the Sax looks like my son. When I played the darn thing I liked it. In fact I liked it so much when I got back to the states I bought it plus 6 more CD's by the same artist.

When I want to "expand" feelings of contentment I listen to this CD. Some pieces are mellow and others a peppy but none of them blast you out of your easy chair. Also, I can cook or read while I listen to the music...but, it isn't Musak, it has character. Sometimes, I just listen to it.

In a way it reminds me a little of the music used in the tv series "Moonlighting" probably because of the instruments, sax, piano, soft drums and snares, and the occasional soft vocal. Marienthal has a distinct "sound" however. This boy plays a nice Sax.
