Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

3 out of 5 stars The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

5 out of 5 stars One of the world's greatest mezzos.......2005-03-09

Von Stade has a voice made of emotion. Her Cherubino (you can hear it on Solti's recording of Le Nozze) is simply THE BEST that there is, so it's vital that they included her "Non So Piu" on this CD - a very interesting arrangement, too, with violin. Not so good as with orchestral accompaniment but still it's nice. Now, I bought this CD for the Mignon gavotte and was not dissapointed. The notes are light and airy. Her voice compliments the natural beauty of the music. Equally gorgeous was the Massinet and oh! The Offenbach is wonderful. It drips with Von Stade-ness. I've heard Anne Sofie Von Otter sing the same aria and she seemed to overdo the comic aspect of it - although I am aware that after all, it is Offenbach. But my philosophy is play it straight and the funniness will shine through. Anyway, this is an excellent CD. Every piece on it is a gem. If you want a good sampling of a great singer, try this CD!

Vesselina Kasarova has a truly glorious voice: its range and palette of colors are enormous; it can be both dark and radiant and seems to have a core of burnished copper. She has appeared in opera houses all over the world and released recordings of Mozart and Rossini arias as well as entire operas such as I Capuleti e i Montecchi, but has only recently branched out into lieder recitals. This is her debut lieder album, and the beauty of her voice is fully in evidence throughout. However, Kasarova seems to weigh every word and note and has given so much thought to the relationship between them that she has lost the most essential quality of the German romantic lied: its simplicity. She exaggerates phrasing, dynamics, and character, changes tempi instead of moods, and breaks up melodic lines with overinflection. The disc includes some of the greatest and best-loved songs, as well as a few unfamiliar ones, by three supreme masters of the form, chosen with obvious care; not surprisingly, Kasarova is most persuasive in the dramatic ones, in which her basically operatic approach works best. Friedrich Haider is a good pianist and a supportive--perhaps too supportive--partner. --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unconventional and fresh.......2002-09-01

I have always wondered why should German lieder be sung in accordance with some indefinable standart of "simplicity"? To me-it`s all about sincerety, air of intimacy and versatility. That is exactly what you`ll find on Kasarova`s record. She`s imaginative and emotional-something very important when you sing pieces that are so popular and want to make them sond new and fresh. The only thing I don`t like about this disc is that the singer is recorded too close. But anyway- it doesn`t spoil the overall quality of the performance.

5 out of 5 stars Unusual but stunning.......2002-04-14

It's true, this is not the typical lieder approach. Indeed, it's often daring, pushing the limits of what a song can bear before it turns operatical. And yet, Vesselina kasarova manages to pull it off marvelously. She has such a variety in tonal colour that she brings something new and fresh to every song she sings. The Schubert selections are great, and the Schumann as well, but she is simply magnificent in the Brahms lieder. I wonder if there will ever be such a perfect, touching, almost heart-rending rendition of "Feldeinsamkeit". Listen to the emotional build-up in "Von ewiger Liebe". This is simply a beautiful disc, giving immense pleasure every time you put it on. Minor quibbles about imperfect German or a too close recording fall into nothing besides the sheer qualities of this disc. A desert island one, no question about it...

5 out of 5 stars Magical!.......2002-02-21

What a marvellous disc! Truly amazing! A young singer whose Lieder recital has something to say and does it so beautifully!
I don't know where to start the praise - maybe with the voice itself, which is simply astonishing in its richness. Kasarova has great powers of communication and the courage to `speak her mind' in which she reminds me of Brigitte Fassbaender. Also her voice, though beautiful in a more conventional way, has some of the qualities of the great German artist's. Like Fassbaender, Kasarova is a great story-teller; she knows that Lieder singing is about telling a story and not `just' singing it. And how she tells them! Her approach is a perfect illustration of a very important quality in Lieder singing which seems to be forgotten nowadays - singing should be like pure speech. One of the greatest Lieder interpreters, Harry Plunket Greene, called speech in song "one of the most moving human gifts". Unlike many young (not only!) singers, Kasarova possesses this gift and together with Bartoli and Terfel shows that `speaking' through singing is the best way of communicating with the audiences.
Kasarova is neither the first nor the last singer to sing in a foreign language and her German sometimes sounds idiosyncratic (though I better leave this problem to the native speakers), but she is certainly one of the few among today's young Liederists who actually is not afraid of pronouncing words clearly. If that can occasionally lead to overemphasis, as some native speakers may quibble, it is certainly a minor offence. Clear pronunciation in singing becomes harder and harder to come by; it is like in movies, where the ill-conceived virtue of `expressing oneself' makes everything else irrelevant, never mind that the viewer has a hard time understanding what is being said, however beautiful it may be. It has become customary to criticize such great singers as Elisabeth Schwarzkopf for paying too much attention to `the meaning of the words' which creates the impression of a lack of spontaneity! Nothing could be more absurd! In this recital, you get the most spontaneous and sincere singing imaginable but you can be sure that lots of work and time went into creating both the programme and the final effect. And the final effect is one of those recitals that are simply difficult to talk about and even more difficult to argue with. How can one argue with such sincere conviction and technically supreme singing? If there is a high point in this sequence of gems, it certainly is Brahm's "Von ewiger Liebe". This `big song', as Gerald Moore called it, certainly gets a big `treatment' here and leaves the listener in a state of wonder. Almost every song brings something new - as somebody on this page said, Kasarova and Haider deliver these songs as if they have no knowledge of what has been done before. I couldn't put it better. But it is obvious that it is not self-indulgence that guides them. As I said, it is a very well-prepared programme that sounds fresh and sincere, with no signs of calculation or mannerisms, enemies of any Lieder singing.
Too operatic a voice? Not at all! What is a `Lieder voice' after all? It is a voice that can make poetry speak through the singer and that is exactly how Kasarova uses her instrument here. Her voice is indeed caught very closely but this closeness adds to the overall atmosphere of the recital (though I understand that some reviewers were rather bothered by it) - it is like participating in an exceptional Liederabend with a well designed programme that has only one flaw: it leaves you hungry for more. Imagine her Erlking, The Dwarf or The King of Thule - some of the most haunting stories told in Lieder. I wish Kasarova recorded more Lieder, but judging from her recordings and appearances all over the world, she is rather involved in standard operatic repertoire with an emphasis on belcanto. Since I am no fan of bel canto, I am left with the impression that she doesn't exist. Happily this disc together with her debut and Mozart arias albums are such joys that can make up for this apparent loss (she also released a disc with Berlioz's "Nuits d'ete" and Ravel's "Sheherezade" but I haven't heard it yet).
This CD is now one of my top favorites among the recent female Lieder recitals next to von Otter's Schumann and Schubert discs. It will always have a very special place in my record collection and I don't hesitate to put it among the recitals of the greatest Lieder singers! (Kicek)

4 out of 5 stars Thrillingly individual.......2000-07-04

Having followed Kasarova's meteoric rise in the world of opera with keen interest I was torn asunder by this release: could this glorious mezzo really adapt her art to the intimate realm of Lieder, especially this particular repertoire which is, after all, already overpopulated by the full spectrum of the sublime to the horribly bad? The answer for me is a resounding "yes", although I can understand any misgivings others might have. I do not find her approach too operatic. It is one of the dichotomies of the disc: the voice is huge, but the approach is intimate to the point where, as the editorial review points out, she seems to almost over-interpret the words. A handy comparison would be to listen to Jessye Norman in similar repertoire - now that is an operatic approach! What differentiates this disc from so many others is that Kasarova and Haider deliver the songs as if they have no knowledge of what has been done before. Their delivery is sometimes quirky and almost uniformly unusual. Is this good? Once again: I think so. Standards like Schubert's "Im Fruhling" and "Auf dem Wasser zu singen" suddenly sound fresh and new. The mood darkens considerably for the Brahms section of the programme, the sublime "Von ewiger Liebe" being given a marvelously calculated performance. The Schumann section is again slightly lighter, but equally satisfying.

Kasarova's timbre is really a miracle. She can shade the basic coppery character into a veritable pallet of colours. Her diction is close to perfect, although her German is sometimes idiosyncratic, to say the least. Haider's accompaniment is very satisfying indeed. The artists seem to truly share a common vision and it works wonders. Years of working together in recital (often with Haider's wife Edita Gruberova) have obviously paid off.

I have only one quibble about this disc, which is why it receives four and not five stars from me: Kasarova is recorded too closely. Although it is good to hear the singer breathing the close recording unfortunately overaccentuates the way in which she chops up phrases for interpretive purposes as well as her tendency to lisp.

In summary: if you are the kind of Lieder connoisseur who believes that the Elly Ameling approach is the begin-all and end-all of Lieder singing, this one is not for you. If, on the other hand, you are more adventurous and tend to believe that traditions are there to flirt with, you might just love it, as I do.

1 out of 5 stars Turn down the piano, please!.......2000-06-30

How does a disc this bad get released? It's impossible to evaluate the performance, because the piano all but drowns out the singer. The singer sounds like she's in the next room; the piano sounds like it's in your lap.

Metropolitan Opera soprano Heidi Grant Murphy and her husband, the pianist and conductor Kevin Murphy (also of the Met), conceived the concept for this recording with guidance from their friend and Met colleague, Ken Noda. The intent was to convey a feeling of infinite tranquillity, reverie, dreaminess, and tenderness. Though the disk's packaging--including its title--may strike some as slightly drippy, the recording deserves high praise on musical grounds. The selection of repertoire is excellent, and as a result, the disk's overall feeling is one of serene continuity. As interpreter, Heidi Grant Murphy brings out the many subtly-shaded moods in this music, and her voice is stunning without calling undue attention to itself. It is by turns quiet, close, tender, and yielding. It's a special disk to have. --Gwendolyn Freed

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Truly lovely.......2006-08-23

Ms. Grant Murphy has an exquisitely tuned and toned soprano, and her husband, Mr. Murphy, accompanies and supports with great delicacy and musicality. The selections are wide-ranging and eclectic, and I found most of the disc utterly entrancing. Heidi Grant Murphy's voice is clear, high, pure and uniquely beautiful in timbre. I had the great pleasure of hearing her live in concert in 2005 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, in Mahler, and on the strength of that decided to purchase this CD. If pressed to find what I considered to be a weak spot, I would have to say that I did not find Ms. Grant Murphy's voice particularly suited to "O quand je dors", although the duo performance of that song was as thoroughly musically informed and well-conceived as any of the other selections included. I think this is quite a remarkable collection and I would definitely recommend it to lovers of art song.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant!.......2003-12-30

Seems like Laura, who gave a terrible review, is a bit jealous! She must have been competing with Heidi and was not picked. It is obvious she is terribly resentful of Heidi's beautiful voice and talent. Heidi's voice is angelic and peaceful. I highly reccommend all of her CD's. Her husband Kevin and she make a great pair and their talents are amazing! Keep them coming Heidi. As for you Laura, keep trying. Besides the attitude and resntment, you must not have the talent you thought you possessed.

Looking at the high praise this mediocre recording receives in the other reviews, I'm wondering whether I listened to the same one. I bought this recording with high hopes, but having never listened to her voice - I regret it. The material she performs is good (if somewhat standard), but her voice is really...weird. It has a Beverly Sills (past the golden years) wobble in it that she seems to think is a healthy vibrato. I know she was pulled out of Indiana U early for a Met contract, and I think they did her a disservice - her technique is horrible. She does have good control of her pianissimi, but as a whole, the recording is most disappointing. In the Rach, her fortes are frighteningly bad, almost embarassing. How does this woman sing at the met?

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Voice.......2000-02-25

Heidi Garant Murphy is an exceptional singer. The magical tone of her voice is matched by intelligent musicianship. I recently (Feb 10) saw her as Sophie in Der Rosenkvalier at the Met. A wonderful performance, in which she was clearly the interpreter closest to what I think Strauss had in mind. She also had the most beautiful voice (although Fleming was also in excellent voice) This disc is another wonderful example or her singing. Kevin Murphy, who is her husband, provides a sensitive piano accompaniment. This disk is not background music. The sensitive interpretations require your complete attention to be appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars Buy!.......2000-02-15

Judging from most reviews in the classical genre, I am not qualified to evaluate Twilight & Innocence for its technical merits, but let me say that Heidi Grant Murphy has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. The selections, and lovely piano accompaniment are a perfect showcase for her talent. I've worn out my repeat button on V'adoro, pupille...heidi and kevin, encore!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer Dieskau with Deutsche Grammophon.......2005-11-08

"An die Musik", aptly named after the famous Schubert lied of the same title, is an excellent overview of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's recorded output for Deutsche Grammophon over the past 56 years. On the CDs, there are six Schubert lieder from Fischer-Dieskau's 21 disc set with pianist Gerald Moore, (dating from ca. 1970) and other lieder by Wolf, Richard Strauss, Brahms, and Schoeck. Also included are two chansons of Claude Debussy, and arias from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" and "Don Giovanni", both conducted by Ferenc Fricsay; small part of Fricsay's Orff "Carmina Burana" (rec. 1949), Schubert's "Dichterliebe" cycle with pianist Jorg Demus; and the 4 Ruckert lieder with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic. Fischer-Dieskau is amazing, with such a wide repertory, and such enthusiasm for singing such varied and different styles of music.

The bonus DVD, lasting about 28 minutes, is very interesting to watch and listen to. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and pianist Sviatoslav Richter peform 8 famous Schubert lieder in the great room of a hotel in a remote Bavarian village, in utterly charming and rather informal surroundings. The camera work is minimal, the sound, very fine but a little low level mono: filmed in 1978. Fischer-Dieskau looks alot younger here than more recent photos of him, but a little older and more classy than the photos I'm used to seeing of him, which date from the late 1960s. Fischer-Dieskau and Richter work as one, and their partnership and great working relationship is evident from measure 1. There is no doubt watching this that they had alot of fun performing for the cameras.

I am grateful DG released this set: 2 very full discs at over 70 minutes of music each, + the DVD of a telecast not seen since 1978. The sound is very good, even in the mono tracks, and if you like lieder and opera excerpts, you will be delighted. I mention this as one who's experienced Fischer-Dieskau's recordings for 25 years, and been usually delighted by them.

5 out of 5 stars The brahms colletion.......2007-07-05

I really enjoy these recordings that are at great tempi, they are great for diction and the musicianship is a fine quality.

5 out of 5 stars Norman is wonderful in Brahms, too grand in Schumann.......2006-01-05

This budget Philips two-fer is certainly worth the price since Jessye Norman is in prime voice here. But the early (1980) Brahms recital is much more simple and direct, while the Schumann recital finds her adopting a grand manner that is fairly fatal to Schumann's immediate, spontaneous gift. The Frauenliebe und Leben soundw diva-ish, and although it fares better becasue of its larger dramatic scale, the Liederkreis Op. 39 is also weighed down by Norman's platform manner. Three stars.

As a lieder composer Brahms needs help to sustian interest. His melodic gifts are always evident, but it's much easier to listen to Schubert and Schumann at a stretch. In part this is because Brahms was essentially a mature personality inclined toward fervor in the form of religion or reflection rather than immediate passion. He was also a genius, of course, so Jessye Norman has no problem in this 1980 recital gathering 12 masterpieces (most lieder recordings contain more like 20, but this feels like quite enough).

Her style is often deliberate and hushed, which is welcome since Brahms can be deliberate, period. She wants us to feel the thrill inside each song, and her plush, powerful voice with its many beauties does just that. I cannot think of a better Brahms recital on CD--my other favorites are by Von Otter and Quasthoff.

By contrast, Norman adopts a platform manner and too much dignity in her two Brahms recitals for DG with Daniel Barenboim (now available as a budget two-fer, as is this recording, which Philips has paired with Norman's somewhat overblown Schumann recital). Nor can I sit through two hours of Brahms lieder with uninterrupted rapture.

For me the highlight here is the first song, Von ewiger Liebe, which Norman takes very slowly but with convincing passion. She's impeccable in every song, really, and one only wishes that her accompanist, Geoffrey Parsons, had risen to her fiery level more often. He remains British throughout. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Jessye Norman Sings Brahms and Schumann.......2005-08-01

There is little in music with the intimacy and intensity of the art song when performed by a beautiful voice and a responsive pianist. This two-volume CD on Phillips by the beloved American soprano Jessye Norman (b. 1945) is part of a multi-volume retrospective of Ms. Norman's work titled simply "The Jessye Norman collection". It includes a CD devoted to the lieder of Brahms and a CD including two song-cycles by Robert Schumann. It is an outstanding disk.

Jessye Norman is an inspiring figure as a singer and as a person. Born in Augusta, Georgia to a musical family, she has performed throughout the world in a diverse repertory of opera, (including Gluck's "Alceste") lieder, spirituals, and jazz. In December, 1997, she received the Kennedy Center Honor Award, the youngest person ever to achieve this distinction. She is also widely revered for her humanitarian activities.

Ms Norman sings beautifully and powerfully in this collection of lieder. She has a powerful, dramatic voice, but it serves her well in these simple, intimate songs. The first CD includes 12 lieder by Johannes Brahms accompanied by Geoffrey Parsons. I have heard Parsons accompany Sir Thomas Allen in a collection of Brahms lieder on the Virgin label, and he is one of the finest of pianists for this music. Brahms composed songs throughout his career. They generally are of a simple, strophic and lyrical character and show a markedly different side of this composer than do his larger pieces. They also remain relatively unfamiliar except to lovers of art song. The higlights of this collection include the songs "Von ewiger Liebe", "Meine Liebe ist grun", "Wie Melodien Zieht es mir", and "Die Mainacht". The CD also includes Brahms' two songs opus 91 for voice, piano, and viola obligato in which Brahms combines lyricism and romanticism with his knowledge of the baroque. The simplicity of Brahms's art songs belies the musicality and effort just under the surface. This CD will make an ideal brief introduction to Brahms's songs throught the interpretive power of Jessye Norman and Geoffrey Parsons.

Unlike Brahms, Robert Schumann was at his best in small forms as a composer of song. The second CD in this collection includes two song-cycles the "Frauenliebe und Leben" opus 42 and "Liederkreis" opus 39 with pianist Irwin Gage accompanying Ms. Norman. Both these cycles consist of intense, personal, romantic music composed when young Robert Schumann was deeply in love with his hard-won and treasured wife, Clara.

"Frauenliebe und Leben" ("A woman's love and life") is a cycle of eight songs set to embarassingly bad and sentimental poetry by one Adelbert von Chamisso. But regardless of the poetry, Schumann projected the feelings of love into these songs which range widely in style from the operatic (No. 2, "Er der Herlichste von allen") to the most intimate, to the elegaic (No. 8, "Nun hast du mir den ersten Scdhmerza getan"). There is a fusion of voice and piano in these songs, as in the best of Schumann, which is a joy to hear.

The second cycle, Liederkreis, opus 39, consists of 12 songs set to the poetry of Joseph von Eichendorff. These songs are carefully arranged musically and thematically. They are generally mysterious and romantic and take place in the woods or in solitude and speak of love lost or love found and of death. The songs are in a variety of forms and include the ballade "Waldgesprach" (no. 3), the lovely and intense "Mondnacht", (no. 5) the song of longing, "Wehmut" (no. 9), and the final "Frulingsmacht" (no. 12) which concludes with the words, reminding the listener of Schumann and Clara, "She is yours, she is yours"! This cycle is Schumann at his greatest.

This CD includes informative liner notes about the songs and about Ms. Norman. Unfortunately, it fails to include the texts and translations of the songs, an omission which is most glaring for the Liederkreis. This all-too-common omission to one side, this CD offers a not to be missed experience of Brahms and Schumann transformed through the musical artistry of Jessye Norman.

5 out of 5 stars desert island disc.......2002-08-29

Hans Hotter is a wonder. The voice has a remarkable agility and breadth of expression, that has justly earned him the admiration of several generations. He is an expert at chiaroscuro, sometimes lightening the tone, as in Ständchen, while in Loewe's "Edward", he adopts a minatory timbr that is chilling. It is well known that Hotter was THE Wotan of the post-war years, but he is not inferior to any lieder singer. These songs are mini-dramas in his expert hands. Testament is quite generous with these re-issues of classic singers, packing 27 songs onto this disc. It is a recording worth having.

5 out of 5 stars A great Hotter anthology.......2002-06-19

This compilation comes from 1966 and 1968, when the experienced Hotter had a high level of refinement. Very few people have been so succesful in fusing elements of both singer and actor into one entity as Hotter could. This CD is more proof of that. To a newcomer, his voice will sound quite dark and rich, but has vibrance. His characterizations are intense, but not exaggerated. And amazingly, both these elements are completely integrated. The works represented here need no introduction - if any of them cannot convince with Hotter singing, there is little alternative. To compare Hotter with Fischer-Dieskau is neither simple nor right, it is really up to one's taste. Yet the CD is also good for someone new to lieder. The recording quality is exceptional, even for the mono selections (about half the disc).

5 out of 5 stars Compilation release.......2005-11-24

This release is a remastering of the two previous releases: Sweet Power of Song and On Wings of Song. Both original CDs are still available if you hunt for them. The original releases do have the texts included in the booklets (lamented by a previous reviewer of this compilation release). The lack of text is not a problem for me. I just listen to these incredible singers. I don't need to read what they are singing.
