Rather than simulate sounds of nature, in his "The Seasons: Vermont", violinist/composer Malcolm Goldstein just goes out and grabs them. There are recordings of everything here, from birdsongs and gushing brooks, to chainsaws and persnickity car motors: all are used to evoke the seasonal changes one may experience during a typical year in rural Vermont. This recording also contains Goldstein's ten-minute "Soundings for Solo Violin" (1997). While I prefer some of his 1980 offerings, the piece does provide a glimpse of Goldstein's trememdous talents. He has a surgeon's control over his horn. And his storm of ideas is wonderfully drenching: he reminds me of a brilliant conversationalist completely taking over a dinner party.

...Goldstein is a talented violinist equally attuned to Cage and Vivaldi in this composition. He begins with Summer and uses recordings of the Vermont environment electronically transformed in a manner consistent with his reading of the seasons.
