The Best of the Moody Blues.......2007-07-08

This is truly "The Best" of the Moody Blues!! It brought the 60's & 70's back to me. I always loved their music. Great dancing music,wonderfully put together. I highly recommend this music for us ,"old hippies", and others who appreciate well performed music.

Best Compilation Available.......2007-06-20

It is so hard to create a CD that has the "best" Moody Blues songs, because you inevitably have to leave something out. The only thing I would have changed about this album, however, is I would have omitted "Go Now" and included "Driftwood." Then this would be perfect. Nevertheless, it's pretty close!

More complete than "Voices in the Sky: The Best of the Moody Blues" :).......2007-06-18

"The Best of the Moody Blues" ("Best Of" for short, in my review) is probably the most complete single CD collection of Moody Blues hits and classics to date ... A fine choice of tracks featured on this collection, and I love the album cover (The most recent version featuring the dove and the starry night-time sky) ... Looks like the cover of a movie soundtrack! :)

First time that "Go Now" is featured on a Moody Blues best of compilation, isn't it? I agree with those who felt that this song was out of place on this release, compared to the rest of the songs, but no big deal ... The sound quality in the mastering/re-mastering is pretty good for a mono sound recording.

It's a shame that the alternate mix of "Tuesday Afternoon," from the 2006 Deluxe Edition SACD release of "Days Of Future Passed," wasn't discovered at the time of the making of "Best Of." While the stereo separation wasn't so hot, the mix featured a clean ending to the song, featuring an extra bar of the instrumentation and Justin Hayward chanting, and without any orchestra added, too. No big deal, once again, but such a mix would have made "Best Of" unique, just to acquire a different mix of the song. On this "Best Of" edit, turn the volume to your stereo system all the way up, during the fadeout, and you will hear a quick burst of the strings from the orchestra on the very last note of the song, just before the tune is completely faded out ... Something amusing to note, when it came to attempting to fade out "Tuesday Afternoon" before the orchestra took over the remainder of the song. :)

Before this non-orchestral version of "Nights In White Satin" made an appearance on "Best Of," it was previously featured on the 1985 compilation "Voices in the Sky: The Best of the Moody Blues" ("Voices," for short) ... The sound quality is really good on this mix. It's loud and crisp, plus the sound quality sounded magnificent for the mix on "Voices," at a time before the remastered CD's came out!

The mix of "Ride My See-Saw," also taken from "Voices," returns here ... Notice how this mix fades out several seconds earlier than the mix from "Legend Of A Band" ("Legend," for short). On that release, The Moodies chant "Ride My See-Saw" three times, as the song fades out, but the mix featured on "Best Of" (And all future compilation mixes of "See-Saw") cuts the tune short right on the very last chant of "See-Saw," so it sounds like "See-Sss" ... Just another little something I couldn't help but notice, as I raised the volume to catch the fadeout! :) In that case, I would rather the record company selected the "Legend" mix. It featured a more professional fadeout.

I guess for those who couldn't stand the orchestral remakes of both "Question" and "Isn't Life Strange," from "Legend," "Best Of" makes things right by giving the fans the originals. :)

When the earlier version of "Best Of" was released, it featured the "Time Traveller" ("T.T.," for short) edit of "The Story In Your Eyes." When the more recent version was released (featuring the different album cover), there was a great improvement, as the single version of "Story" was substituted (Previously found on "Legend," and later appearing on "Anthology" and "Gold"), which was about twelve seconds longer than the "T.T." mix. The CD booklet even changed the running time of the track, on the later edition! :)

"Best Of" features the single version of "I'm Just A Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)," with the loud crashing drums in the intro, not the cross fade from "When You're A Free Man," as heard on "Seventh Sojourn" and the edit job on "Legend." This mix previously appeared on "Voices" and "T.T."

The mix of "Blue World" was taken from "T.T." You can tell when raising the volume during the fadeout, as the edit features the ending to "Blue World" cross faded with the sound of the synthesizers that open up "Sitting At The Wheel!" Here, the sound is cut short, as the tune fades out. It's too bad that "Best Of" didn't feature the original mix of "Blue World" from "The Present," for something refreshing, as the mix chosen here was a carbon copy of the "T.T." mix.

The remaining songs are the same as their original versions and those that appeared on "T.T." I also agree with the opinions on excluding the Justin Hayward only tracks, "Blue Guitar" and "Forever Autumn," from "Best Of," since none of the other Moody Blues performed on either track. On the up side, though, both songs are beautiful, brilliant, well done, and just as enjoyable as any Moody Blues tune. I don't mind the appearances of these two songs on the future compilations, though, as most of them were 2-disc CD collections, anyway. My personal alteration for "Best Of" would have been to replace the Justin Hayward tracks with the awesome "The Other Side Of Life," which was one advantage "Legend" had over this release. No biggie, yet again. Just a fantasty concept I had for "Best Of." :)

What I like more about "Best Of" than "Voices" is that there is more song variety and a bigger track listing here. True, "Voices" had an advantage over this release with classic songs like "Never Comes The Day," "After You Came," and "Veteran Cosmic Rocker," but I prefer a collection that is able to utilize as much CD space as possible. My all time favorite single Moody Blues compilation, however, is "Legend." True, "Legend" has a shorter track list than "Best Of," but I enjoy the former collection because it includes the rare orchestral remakes of "Isn't Life Strange" and "Question," which are difficult to come across, these days. Also, I prefer the full, orchestral versions of "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin," also found on "Legend." Plus, like I mentioned above, "Legend" features "The Other Side Of Life," as well as a properly faded out mix of "Ride My See-Saw." Still any Moody Blues compilation is a winner, in my book, and all of the songs on "Best Of" are some of the best The Moodies have got ... Just listen for yourself! :)

One more thing. Here's something really bizarre that I've discovered, in regard to the earlier version of "Best Of" ... I used to have a copy of the earlier version, and there is one point in each of the following songs where the songs go from stereophonic sound into mono for one second: "I'm Just a Singer (In A Rock And Roll Band)" (Right after the first time The Moody Blues sing this line), "The Voice" (At the beginning, when the synthesizers begin to fade in ... Both versions of this release have it), "Your Wildest Dreams" (After the second set of verses, when they sing "Once upon a time in your wildest dreams," also featured on the mix from "The Universal Masters Collection: Classic Moody Blues"), and "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" (Right on the chorus, following the verse that begins with, "The words that I remember..."). Check this out with your headphones on, if you own a copy of the earlier edition of "Best Of!" :)

A Proper Introduction To The Moodies..........2007-02-26

Here we have a long playing CD capturing the great Moodies on a CD that if we were living in the age of the Long Player record would undoubtedly be broken down into 2 LP's...the first album showcasing their renown 1960's 1970's period and the last 8 tracks clearly at their post Seventh Sojourn album peak.
While their great 1960's r&b single "Go Now" is included and is totally unlike the remaining disc, it is a bonus, in good sound (unlike the Magnificent Moodies cd) kicking things off historically on collecting tracks from their remaining catalogue.
Indeed, the Moodies were an album bands(definitely their first 7 albums) and it is a disservice to juxtapose them on a best of package but such is the case here and since this is a collection of no new material it still sounds fresh collecting "hits" and is still a nice compilation with notes and photos within giving an overview of their good melodies and quality that is them.

Great collection.......2007-05-21

A very nice collection of works from British singers and groups of the 1960s. This 3 CD set, as some note, costs a bunch, but it takes one back in time very nicely. Also, in the version that I acquired, there is a bonus CD that includes some of the best works of that decade--The Animals sing "House of the Rising Sun"; Marianne Faithfull does "As Tears Go By"; there are Herman's Hermits classics, "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" and "There's a Kind of Hush." Of course, there are obvious absences, such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, etc. Some strange songs show up, too. Is "Winchester Cathedral" really a song to be included here? Do we need four cuts from Dusty Springfield, good as she might be?

That said, many of these songs are classics of the 60s. Think about these:

The Troggs ("Wild Thing"); The Mindbenders ("A Groovy Kind of Love"); Gerry and the Pacemakers ("Ferry Cross the Mersey" and "How Do You Do It?"); Manfred Mann ("Do Wah Diddy Diddy"); Donovan ("Mellow Yellow"); The Searchers ("Love Potion Number Nine"); The Yardbirds ("For Your Love"); Petula Clark ("Downtown"); Lulu ("To Sir with Love"); and so on.

There is a nice booklet going with this CD set. It provides some nice photos, a brief essay on the British music of the 1960s. Worth the price? If you're someone interested in the British music of that decade, then, yes, it is probably a good investment.

I totally like the song selection! SOME of the songs were recorded in stereo, and they sound TERRIFIC! However, my disappointment is that some -like Gimme Some Lovin' were recorded only in mono. I have a top-end music system, and I was really looking forward to getting a "room-full of sound"...with different instruments/voices coming out of different speakers.

Had all of the songs been stereo, I would have given this a perfect five. As it is, however, I WILL concede that even the "mono songs" were recorded well. That is, they don't sound tinny like poorly recorded CD's. do. Pricey, but there's a TON of songs! I'm glad I bought it.

Being a fan,but not a fanatic of Elvis,I came across this new collection of hits from him and thought it was a great time to buy. I had purchased an old hits of his from the 80's, on cassette.Of course,I know the standard hits.Alison,Pump It Up,Accident's Will Happen and my fave, What's So Funny...,among a couple of others. Noticed a whole bunch of songs I wasn't familiar with and look forward to hearing them,when I receive this new set.Of late,I am digging deeper into many classic artists I listen to.Elvis fits into that. For that reason,I am giving this collection,4 stars.For the songs I know. After listening to the others,perhaps I can raise it to 5 stars.

"The Only Elvis That Matters" Done Justice.......2007-05-20

In my opinion, this is the best single-disc Elvis Costello compilation anyone has ever released. In fact, it may even be the best introduction to E.C. out there (He's so stylistically diverse that no single album is an effective introduction, and both of the more extensive collections - "Girls Girls Girls" on Columbia and "The Very Best of Elvis Costello" on Rhino - would probably be overwhelming to someone unfamiliar with the majority of his work). Also, the collection "Rock and Roll Music," as is evident in the title, ignores his non-"Rock and Roll" songs.

But this disc finally gets it right. There was a "The Very Best of Elvis Costello & the Attractions" single-disc issued on Rykodisc in 1994 that came close, but as good as that disc was, this collection makes three substitutions that are actually improvements: "(The Angels Want to Wear My) Red Shoes," "New Lace Sleeves," and "Almost Blue" replace "Watch Your Step," "New Amsterdam," and "Love Field."

Not only are the substitutions slightly better songs in my opinion, they also paint a more complete picture of Elvis Costello as an artist and writer. Especially "Red Shoes" - if you'd only heard the ballad "Alison" and the reggae-influenced "Watching the Detectives" from his debut album, you'd have no idea what to expect from the rest of the CD, but "Red Shoes" really sets the tone for the rest of that disc (and it's just an amazing song). Some people complain that these songs have been repackaged too many times, but I have a hard time arguing with the final result.

The remastering of this collection sounds as good as the Rhino remasters (which managed to be a slight improvement over the already great-sounding Rykodisc versions), and I really don't understand why some people complain about the sound (but I never owned any of the vinyl records, so maybe I am missing something). Still, the sound is the best that I've heard on CD, and in terms of song selection, this is a near-perfect set. For some, this will be all the Elvis Costello they ever need. For others, it will be the beginning of a long journey into the career of one of the best, most insightful and most interesting singer-songwriters in popular music. Either way, it's hard to go wrong with this collection.

Same Old Music in Yet Another New Sleeve.......2007-05-15

Now that thirty years has passed since his debut, it is apparent to me that Elvis Costello has a lot more in common with his namesake than a singing career. Case in point - Almost immediately upon his arrival at RCA, Elvis Presley's recordings were packaged with little regard to the consumer, and then re-packaged so relentlessly that nobody except the most dedicated, wealthy, and mentally unbalanced collector could possibly hope to amass all of Presley's catalog. With blithe regularity, RCA executives would abuse their position as the historic caretakers of a rock and roll legend by digging deeper and deeper into obscurities, then packaging them with recycled classic recordings. Very, very little was genuinely `new' except the package itself. These collections are innumerable, and I pity the poor soul who suffers the disease of being a completist collector, because it can cost you your bank account, your house, and maybe even your marriage, all in the pursuit of owning all that is Elvis.
It now appears as though the same type of abuse has befallen the recorded works of Elvis Costello. I should know. I was one of those `mentally unbalanced' individuals who felt the need to own every Elvis Costello item released on the marketplace. In the beginning, it was kind of fun. Costello had numerous singles with non-LP b-sides, and plenty of `alternate' versions to keep fans quite busy. I was a part of that vinyl junkie set, a cult of obsessed lunatics who lived to find the rarest single, or an alternate package. After three years and hundreds of dollars spent, I remember feeling betrayed when Columbia issued "Taking Liberties," a collection of Elvis' rare b-sides. In an instant, one five-dollar album made twenty rarities commonplace. Nevertheless, I soldiered on; buying 10" collector's singles, alternate mixes, and all sorts of oddities. Then, the CD era began, and it started to happen all over again. Elvis changed labels (from Columbia to Warner Brothers), and his catalog albums were subjected to not one, not two, but three separate repackagings, each of them containing unique `rarities' that could be obtained nowhere else. A dedicated collector would require four versions of each Elvis Costello album. At this point, I finally surrendered, but I already spent enough to finance a Hawaiian vacation for some record executive and his family of four. Nowadays I simply stand by, amazed as the repackaging craze continues unabated. By my count, the above named collections represent the 10th and 11th re-compilation of Elvis Costello's `hits'. I'm not saying they are bad collections. The booklets contain song lyrics, which is a nice touch, especially for the older material. Naturally, the songs are great and I should know, because I bought each of these tracks at least a half-dozen times already. If you still don't own them, then go ahead and buy them. You will enjoy them. I, however, will stare at my room full of Elvis-related plastic and acknowledge the reason that I never made that trip to Hawaii myself.

i swore i wouldnt buy the elvis cannon again=LPs,Singles,3 sets of CDs etc., unless it was on SACD,and i wont.But the 2 comps were worth a listen,rock and roll for the unreleased stuff{how is it possible?}and 10 years for the 4th remaster.Seeing Elvis's Lexus commercial with him enjoying surround sound just makes me sad for what could have been.Rock on,EC!

+1/2 -- The best early Costello single CD yet.......2007-05-09

You can't hardly swing a dead cat without hitting Costello's early material in reissue form. With Ryko and Rhino both having taken ever-lengthening passes at his albums, Hip-O picks up the catalog years of 1977-1986 for another round. In addition to a new pair of compilations (this one and "Rock and Roll Music") that skim the initial decade's eleven albums, their May 1 release date also marks the re-re-re-reissue of the albums on CD and the catalog's digital download debut (initially from iTunes, later from addtiional services).

After so many Costello reissues and compilations, this collection is mostly a retail shelving refresher and a beacon for Hip-O's album reissue and digital programs; all 22 of these tracks have been available on CD before. And as with other single-disc Costello anthologies such as Sony's 1990 19-track "Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions" and Ryko's 1994 22-track "Very Best of Elvis Costello and the Attractions," there's simply too much worthy material in Costello's initial eleven albums (not to mention assorted singles and B-sides) to fully essay in 80 minutes.

What you get here is a well drawn sketch that provides the neophyte a sense of Costello's incredible torrent of early creativity, the sustain of his first few years, a few missteps in the mid-80s, and a stronger-than-ever comeback with 1986's "King of America" and "Blood & Chocolate" LPs." Though fans of the albums will mentally flinch at the inter-album segues (and thus the missing classics), condensing Costello's career arc does demonstrate how his punk-era angst and blistering song-writing aged and then reasserted itself in a more mature, but no less powerful form a decade later. Reducing 10 years to a single CD also creates a bit of genre whiplash as Costello applied himself to rock, punk, pop, soul, R&B blues, and jazz.

As on Ryko's 1994 collection, Costello aided in the track selection. No surprise then that there are 19 tracks in common with Ryko's earlier release. The three substitutions add the essential "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes," "Almost Blue," and "New Lace Sleeves" in place of the expendable "Watch Your Step," "New Amsterdam," and "Love Field," making this the best single-disc Costello anthology on the market. Costello fans are better off making their own anthologies from the original albums, but those just coming to his work decades after the fact will find this an excellent primer. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. Echoes is a double-CD collection of some of Pink Floyd's best songs. It's also a fascinating document of the band's history. They began life as Syd Barrett's phantasmagoric plaything before clasping the wings of Icarus and ascending toward the sun on an epic space-rock odyssey, eventually turning left once they reached the dark side of the moon and burning up on reentry, crash-landing on every earthlings' home hi-fi. And it's all here--30 years of the Floyd's awesome back catalog trimmed down to two handsome CDs. It's worth remembering that, despite a fondness for pyrotechnics, Pink Floyd were never a prog-rock band. Sure, some of their songs are a bit long, and they never released singles (at least not for 11 years), but the same could be said for Led Zeppelin. Clinically devoid of the faux-classical overtures and vainglorious musicianship of that era, Pink Floyd were a pole apart; Meddle's epic maritime tone poem "Echoes" remains the Floyd's apogee. But here, on this collection, "the albatross" which "hangs motionless upon the air" has had its wings clipped--seven full minutes are missing, but you'd never be able to tell. The sonar bleeps, the screeching seagulls, the howling winds are all retained, and whoever wielded the editorial axe, Eugene, did so carefully.

Interestingly, the album's nonchronological track listing works--the summery, childhood enchantment of "See Emily Play" is right next to the school discipline of "Happiest Days of Our Lives"--and at least this way no one will switch off when material from A Momentary Lapse of Reason comes around. Despite the curious omission of "Atom Heart Mother," this really is the very best of the Floyd--from the throbbing "One of These Days" to the pop operatic "Great Gig in the Sky" to the genius silvery fluidity of Dave Gilmour's guitar work. This is timeless, as many members of Sigur Rós, Radiohead, and the Beta Band will attest. --Kevin Maidment

If you only could have ONE Pink Floyd Disc, this is the one........2007-07-02

Most would think that would be DSOTM. It's a close call. But, since this set has most of the best cuts from DSOTM, and the best cuts from every other release, this would be my choice.

Disc 2 of this set has been my bedtime CD for over a year now.

Only two comments. I could do without "Bike". That song just creeps me out, especially the freaky noise at the very end.

Secondly, I'm disappointed that they cut Gilmours Blues solo in SOYCD.

I still give it 5 stars though.

Not the very best of Floyd.......2007-06-19

Even though this is supposed to be the "Best" of Pink Floyd I would beg to differ. Right now I have a list in front of me of Pink floyd songs that were unjustly omitted. On the other hand, there are a handful of songs here- mainly in Floyd's later years- that are mediocre at best and have no business being on this album. It's still a sure bet for die-hard Floyd fans, however. The best Floyd albums are The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, and Wish you were Here.

Great Introduction to Pink Floyd.......2007-06-11

Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd, is a great introduction to this classic ahead of its time rock group. For those of you not born in the 50's or 60's that could have enjoyed the classic Dark Side of the Moon during its release, this is a tremendous way to find out what all of the fuss was/is about. I am certain that this great CD set will inspire people to purchase much of the Pink Floyd collection, especially some of the bigger hits like The Wall and Dark Side. Many of these songs are simply haunting, while others prove to show how versatile this super group has been over the years. An outstanding value. 5 Stars!

If you're gonna side-step the actual albums and simply dip into a compilation of this seminal band, then this is a safe bet for a solid primer. This collection is substantive, richly entertaining and demonstrates the enduring appeal of one extraordinary band.

Things I don't like about it:
Some favorites and well known cuts missing. Welcome to the Machine, Final Cut, Pigs or Dogs, Have a Cigar, Young Lust... Would it have been better for David to have cut out Momentary (which has Sorrow but no Dogs of War or On the Turning Away) and Division Bell cuts (no Take it Back) and just kept it to the 67-83 material?
Echoes and Shine On You Crazy Diamond edited but if they're going to be on a collection, it's not that bad.

It serves me well on roadtrips and I'm not skipping any cuts, so I do listen to it all the way through.

The Title Says It All.......2007-06-06

This is a great intro to one of rock's greatest band. For a single CD, this is the one to one. It truely is the very best of purple.

A tale of two concerts.......2007-05-16

For whatever reason, the footage of the Copenhagen concert rarely shows Ritchie Blackmore playing, even during his intros or solos. Somebody needs to track that cameraman down and slap him silly. The New York concert footage is better, but the majoity of the tracks on this DVD come from the Copenhagen show. Overall this DVD is a disappointment, enjoyable sometimes, but a disappointment nonetheless.

The very, very, very best?.......2007-02-02

Well, yes and no! There're a couple of things that you should know about this release: first, the liner notes claim that this is the first collection of the CD era, which is not entirely true, since the previous "Deepest Purple" compilation was already available (However, the remastering is most welcome!). And that's probably my only complaint (I would actually rate this item with 4 and a half stars, but since the format won't allow me to do that...) about this compilation: it offers very little additional material, only 3 songs that were not included in "Deepest...".

Its title notwithstanding, this CD is a "greatest hits" compilation and not (necessarily) "The Very best", but semantics aside, there are a couple of exceptions of songs that were not issued as singles (Space Trucking and Child in Time, for instance...). I originally didn't care much for the covers of "Kentucky Woman" and "Hush", but I understood their inclusion here since those were the first hits the band scored with in the U.S (the territory this CD is meant for). But the tunes eventually grew on me, leading me to get their first 3 records.

It's a shame that no additional material from the band's second coming in the 80's could be included though, but that is simply a record company issue: the latter part of Purple's catalog was released with a different record label. In the end, this is a great compilation, and if you want to have a taste of some of Purple's best material, this is a good place to start. However, if you, like me, were looking for a more comprehensive package, including music from all the lineups (including the criminally underrated Mk IV, completely ignored here...), you might be a bit disappointed...You can always get the boxet "Shades", but... that's a different tale... But casual fans looking for nothing but the hits rejoice: here they are!!! And for roughly 8 bucks, you can't really ask for more...

Rock And Roll At Its Best.......2006-12-07

One of the biggest and best bands of the late 1960s' / early 1970s' classic rock movement was undoubtedly Deep Purple. Featuring some of the finest musicians rock hard to offer as well as one of the best lead singers ever (Ian Gillan), in their heyday they were truly a force to be reckoned with.

This 16 track colection collects all of Deep Purple's most popular hits, such as "Hush", "Kentucky Woman", the epic "Child In Time", "Highway Star", the legendary "Smoke On The Water" (a song that joins "Stairway To Heaven" and "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" as one of the echelons of overplayed classic rock anthems, which is not to say it's a bad song), "My Woman From Tokyo" and many others. The sound quality is fantastic, and the liner notes make for a really good read.

I highly recommend this collection.

A solid Deep Purple sampler.......2006-10-16

This is a pretty good collection for a single disc. But really, shouldn't one of the greatest hard rock bands of all, deserve more than this. But if you are just starting out with your exploration of Deep Purple it's good enough. But, also be sure to pick up their 1972 live album, Made In Japan. Deep Purple became legendary through their concerts back in the day and this CD will give you a clue why. Having both, The Very Best of Deep Purple and Made In Japan, should help paint a semi clear picture of this great band.

The groundbreaking work of this British psychedelic-blues supergroup deserves more thorough study, but this 20-song compilation provides a useful overview for newcomers. Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker--virtuosos all--expanded the parameters of rock by incorporating a jazz sensibility into their distorted blues jams. This compilation mixes their odd original hits with a number of souped-up blues covers. The live version of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads" remains one of the greatest blues workouts a rock band has ever produced. Where would we be without bands like Cream?.......2007-04-27

It's rather amusing to think that Cream formed over 40 years ago. They were so revolutionary, just about everything they did left a huge influence on rock bands to come. Ginger Baker is an insane drummer, and was one of, if not the very first, to use a double bass drum the way he did. Jack Bruce invented and perfected that fade-in bass technique and Eric Clapton...well, when you hear the man rip it out on this album, you know these guys were something special.
Cream was one of the first power trios around. Right after them emerged bands like Blue Cheer, Rush and The Jimi Hendrix Experience, but seriously, how many guys were playing like the boys of Cream were in '66? Now, honestly speaking, I was fairly skeptical when purchasing this, at first at least, due to the fact that I saw Clapton listed as the second greatest rock guitarist of all time. Anybody who ranks high on a list has got to be there for a reason, and he proved it to me. I literally started laughing when I heard the blazing solos on songs like "Sweet Wine" and "NSU". The last time I heard a guy that great was somebody like Eddie Van Halen or the legendary Jimi Hendrix, (I got into Hendrix before I became a guitarist, and VH just as I started.)
Clapton, Bruce and Baker form a magnificent band and the songwriting is just as strong as the musicianship. From the epic lyrics in "Tales of Brace Ulysses" to the timeless riff on "Sunshine Of Your Love", these guys could do it all. They went from psychedelic rock, blues rock, proto-metal, jazz fusion, jam rock, and a fusion of all of those elements to make a signature sound that made them the prototypical blues-rock trio that they were.

Pros:
- You get 20, great songs on this album.
- I've seen it on sale for as low as ten bucks.
- The liner notes are great, and you gotta love the psychedelic colors in the inner and outer covers!

Cons:
- Not too many negativities here, except for the recording technique that was used on the tracks from their debut, "Fresh Cream". All of the instruments are to the right and the vocals are to the left, for the most part. I would've thought that the record company would've fixed that! Oh well, it's just for a few tracks that the production is messed up.

Overall:
If you're just getting into Cream, this will make for a great album. Don't have any doubts when buying this, because you get plenty of songs at a great price. It's too bad these guys only lasted for a short time, but they really made magic in the period that they did. Cheers, and peace!

The greatest trio of all time.......2007-03-14

I have to admit, if I never heard another Credence, Motown or Doors song, I wouldn't feel like I was missing out. To be frank, many of the sounds of my boomer youth have been so overplayed on classic rock stations or used in angst-ridden movies that I find myself unable to listen to them any more. However, Cream is not one of those bands, and listening to this disc reminded me how very rich and muscular the best of that period's music could be, before it evolved into art rock like Yes, and that ilk. With the exception of Clapton's work with Derek and the Dominos, and I don't think any of these guys ever played as well as they did here, and I can't say enough about how good these songs are, even the goofy ones. Buy this, even if you're way too young to remember the band when it existed!

Remastering?.......2007-03-01

I used to think the term "remastering" was a come on dreamed up by Jimmy Page to sell old Led Zeppelin albums. I was wrong. Whoever is in charge of re-releasing the Cream catalogue should be ashamed of themselves. One of the greatest - I will dare say it - perhaps the greatest rock combo ever - has been ill served by the keepers of the catalogue. I had a cassette version of Cream's greatest hits that put the sound quality of this CD to shame. ERIC, JACK, GINGER - intervene and make sure your recordings sound crisp for posterity. You desreve better than what the corporate masters have dished out. Anyone with discriminating ears will immediately recognize that the sound quality is a triumph of profit over Cream's artistic genius. Shameful. Again (The BBC recordings are horrendous).

The Very Best of (1995) A Cream compilation album.

Because they are my favorite band, it's hard for me to ever really be satisfied with a greatest hits album. However, I can't complain too much, because none of the songs on here are bad. In fact, they didn't really leave anything out chart-position wise, but there are some gems that would have been nice to see on here. However, people who are just casual listeners will most likely be satisfied with the selection. My only suggestion, though, would be to check out the "Gold" album. The track selection is slightly better and includes live material, though it is more expensive and is a two-disc collection.

From "Fresh Cream": Wrapping Paper, I Feel Free, NSU, Sweet Wine, I'm So Glad, Spoonful. The track selection from this album are spotless. I've no complaints about this, and I'm glad to see that they included "Wrapping Paper", one of the more overlooked Cream songs, which is not on the CD version of "Fresh Cream".

From "Disraeli Gears": Strange Brew, Sunshine of Your Love, Tales of Brave Ulysses, SWLABR, We're Going Wrong. All good, though I would have substituted "World of Pain" for "We're Going Wrong".

From "Wheels of Fire": White Room, Sitting on Top of the World, Politician, Born Under a Bad Sign, Deserted Cities of the Heart, Crossroads. This one is really subjective; all the tracks from this album are excellent, so it's more of choosing which ones you wouldn't mind being left off. Personally, I would have switched "Deserted Cities" for "As You Said".

From "Goodbye": Badge. This was a popular song, though I don't care for it. The final album wasn't very good, so if they had to pick something, it would have to be this one. "Anyone For Tennis" was released purely as a single and belongs to no album.

Overall, the track selections may leave something to be desired. If you're a tried and true Cream fan, just buy the albums, there's only four of them, and only the first three are the ones you want.

I got this CD as a Christmas gift for a friend, and she absolutely loved
it. I was impressed with the timely manner in which it arrived. I would
use this vendor again.

While they're best remembered for "House of the Rising Sun," the Animals had more than one track. What about "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "We've Gotta Get Out of this Place," to name but two, as well as a later incarnation's "San Franciscan Nights," Eric Burdon's ode to the flower power of 1967? Always rough and ready, the Animals were a blues band from Newcastle who never looked completely comfortable in their suits, but who nonetheless produced some great pieces of music--although whether there was ever quite enough to fill an entire album you have to judge for yourself. --Chris Nickson

Not The Original Album.......2007-05-26

Although the cover of this is identical to the 1966 Album - this is NOT a reissue of that album. That album had 11 songs - two of which are NOT on this issue, which has 15 songs. It's a very good album and very representative of this oeriod of their output, but it should not be mistaken for a reissue of the 1966 MGM release.

Best of the Best.......2007-04-30

This is one of those classics that taken out of the cabinet - 30 years later - is still one of the greatest albums, blues, rock and roll or otherwise ever put together. My record is so scratched from over use and abuse through the years that I was forced to go to Amazon and buy the CD. Despite the skips, that rich, true groove, plastic fantastic and scratched album of mine will be sorely missed. I just couldn't bear to not hear the music.

Great Band.......2007-03-31

This band produced alot of good songs back in the 60's.
Their most well known song and a huge hit was House Of The Rising Sun.Thats got a tune that just seems to stick in you head.Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood is another one of my favorites here.Eric Burdon and the band had a special sound.We Gotta Get Out Of This Place is another big hit i love that tune.It's My Life is another well known song from the Animals.
Bands like this were around for a short time,but made some of the best songs.

The Best of the British Invasion.......2006-10-17

The Animals were one of the more grittier of the British Invasion bands. This collections features their hits from the original line up. After this line up the band changed dramatically and it is difficult to compare the two except for the fact they both have Eric Burdon as the front man. House of the Rising Sun is a classic, but other lessor know tunes are just as great like Bo Diddley and Carry my Body. I've enjoyed this CD for a long time and you will to if you enjoy R&B\Blues influenced rock.

Buy Retraspective instead.......2005-09-14

You will better off buying The Animals Retrospective because it has more hits on it.Like White Houses, Sky Pilot and San Franciscan Nights. This is cheap Greatest Hits and missing allots of hits

Dusty Springfield's voice is one of the great pop instruments. Showcased here on 20 tracks from her '60s and early-'70s heyday, her sensuality and strength wrap themselves around everything from big-beat rock and roll like "I Only Want to Be With You" and "Stay Awhile" to seductive masterworks like "Son of a Preacher Man" and "The Look of Love." Very Best ends with a vulnerable reading of the Carole King/Gerry Goffin taking-stock anthem "Goin' Back"--a rarity in the States, where it appeared only briefly. This album was purchased in a fit of nostalgia, as I recalled Dusty Springfield as having a sultry and singular voice. What a disappointment to listen to a string of overproduced ditties. The production techniques effectively masked whatever talent this voice once displayed. Or was it just my wistful imagination all along?

This cd set has all the familiar to US listeners songs, plus many that were not heard in USA, but they are all good,this cd set is an excellant value and a great pleasure to have and listen to.I highly recommend it for Herman fans and British invasion fans.

There are some real gems on this CD but there are far too many duds in between. If you are interested in the whole range, it's worth hearing all the way through... once.

If you believe the insert notes to this album, and Noone and Whitwam's websites, the Hermits were third only to The Beatles and Stones in the pantheon of British sixties pop. Well, that's not how I remember it. In terms of critical acclaim and enduring public support, The Who, The Kinks, The Hollies and The Tremeloes were up there, while the Hermits were distinctly second league. That's nothing to be ashamed of, I'm just saying let's not exaggerate. They became big stars on both sides of the pond and sold over 50 million records, so they deserve attention, but let's not pretend they scaled the musical heights - they enjoyed a brief romp in the foothills.

They had just one British number 1. That was their first release, I'm Into Something Good. This Goffin/King song is very characteristic of the time, with its teen-love lyrics and catchy tune, and remains the trademark Hermits song. The other tracks are a mixed bunch. The arrangement and harmony singing on Years May Come, Years May Go are embarrassingly trite. Equally ludicrous are the ill-judged attempts to scramble onto the social comment bandwagon, with The Man With The Cigar and Here Comes the Star. But when they stick to tuneful, unpretentious pop, like I'm Into Something Good and Sunshine girl, they are well worth a listen. Track 8, disk 1 (Dream On Dream On) and track 21, disk 2 (I Gotta Dream On) is actually the same, the former being a remastered version. The Noone 1971 solo, Oh You Pretty Thing is interesting because it features the song's writer, David Bowie, on piano.

They were never Herman's Happy Hermits, as a look at the rival websites of Noone and Whitwam will testify. The Hermits were talented and wanted to progress musically. Instead, they remained the backing to Noone's frothy pop. Briefly, in the sixties, they billed themselves as Peter Noone and Herman's Hermits, betraying the behind-the-scenes disputes. Today, groups headed by Noone and Whitwam still appear separately and very confusingly as rival Herman's Hermits.

Peter Noone (Herman) was a child star of a British soap set in his native Manchester. His was a cheeky, cheerful, chirpy appeal, and any picture of him not grinning broadly would have been dismissed as a forgery. Last I heard, he was in a daytime soap stateside, and still going strong.

It was in Manchester that I saw actor Trevor Peacock in Waiting For Godot and it comes as quite a shock to learn that he wrote the Herman's hit Mrs Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter. This was one of a trio of quaintly British novelty songs - along with Leaning on a Lampost and I'm Henery the Eighth I Am - that were the mainstay of their US success but were quite rightly never released as singles in the UK. There, they would have been seen as old material that had already been performed better by other artists. George Formby fans in particular will consider the Herman's version of Lampost as nothing short of sacrilege.

It was another irritatingly cheerful Mancunian with a permanent grin and limited singing talent, Davey Jones of The Monkees, who spelled the end of the Hermits' US success. The market was not big enough for both of them.

Despite these negative comments, the Hermits were an essential part of the sixties scene and this is a comprehensive, good quality, good value collection of their work. So it gets 5 stars and a 'relax, enjoy it, but don't expect it to change your life' recommendation.

I'VE BEEN A HERMAN HERMITS' FAN SINCE THE MID-60'S AND ALTHOUGH I HAD 45'S AND ALBUMS THAT HAVE COME AND GONE, I REALLY WANTED TO FIND A GOOD CD THAT HAD ALL THOSE SONGS ON A AND B SIDES OF THOSE 45'S AND ALBUMS. I HAVE FOUND ALL OF THAT AND MORE ON THE "VERY BEST OF HERMAN HERMITS'".

And to those of you that haven't had the privilege of seeing Peter Noone in concert then or now, you should be very pleased after seeing the energy and fun the Herman and the (new) Hermits project live in concert. Well worth going to.

I don't like reviewing music as it's more often than not a matter of taste. "watching the detectives is one of my all time favs. Great reggae rythem and great lyrics" A handful of other songs are ok but it's a 2 CD set and not cheap and boy oh boy do I wish I had just bought the original CD with "W.T.Detectives" The hand full of (small baby hands) will be ripped to PC & the rest can gather dust on a shelf. Yawn!

Oh, I just don't know where to begin............2007-05-29

While virtually impossible to come up with a "Best of" collection that will satisfy everyone, this compilation comes about as close as you can get. Pair this up with the 2-disc Armed Forces (E's best...IMO) and you'll be all set for a two hour tour-de-force through the catalog of a true 'Man Out of Time'.

The RE-Mastering on this "Best of" is terrible. The sound is blown out and distorted. If SOUND QUALITY is an issue for you then don't buy this album.

The very nearly Very Best of Little E.......2007-05-22

This I believe is the most complete collection of Costello's work to date. It's great in quantity (42 songs), and the selection is almost inarguable...and yet it's still imperfect. The problem with any Elvis compilation is that while he performed perhaps only ten or so truly great songs, there are at least 50 that could be included in a "best of" set. Why not "Welcome to the Working Week," "My Mood Swings," or even a few more Warner Brothers tracks like "Clown Strike"? They're at least as fun as "My Funny Valentine," a marginal cover of an already exhausted classic.

I do appreciate the arrangement, though. The rolling mood is a nice break from the common chronological order of hits albums. And the older tracks seem to have been cleaned up and equalized well, considering how badly most magnetically recorded stuff sounds 20 years later. For a great selection of Elvis's finest, this is the best to date, though I feel the ultimate collection is down the road when higher density discs can store more data.

I've Heard More About Costello Than Hearing Him; I'm Glad To Have Heard His Music Finally........2007-03-29

Elvis Presley and Elvis Costello. One is a musical pioneer, a musical genius, whose music I enjoy listening to, head and shoulders above the other Elvis as well as most other entertainers. The other one is referred to as the King.

I heard about Elvis Costello since I was a teenager, when Costello was starting out and billed as the prototype of '80's music (this was the late '70's). I since heard his Saturday Night Live performance, but I never heard enough of his music to be familiar with him.

This project has fulfilled that. The songs I most enjoyed were "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love & Understanding", "(I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea", "Radio Radio", "The Other Side Of Summer", "Sulky Girl", "She", and "God Give Me Strength".

One comment. I did enjoy the sound of this album, and for listening pleasure I think the approach was the best. However, to get a sense of his career, I would have preferred the chronological approach.
