Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Barenboim's Beethvoen.......2007-06-27

I heard Bachaus play all Beethoven recitals at Carnegie Hall, in NYC. At that time he was the acknowledged master of the Beethvoen Sonata. With Barenboim, the old order changeth, yielding place to new. These recordings have fire, tempestuousness and passion, all emotions that belong in Beethoven.

5 out of 5 stars One of the very best ever.......2007-02-15

This set has to be experienced. The clarity of these performances is beyond belief. If it's not the best set of Beethoven Sonatas, it is certainly among the very best. Take for example the first movement of Sonata number 21. It is so easy to have a performer play all the notes just as Beethoven wrote them and yet leave the listener in a morass of confusion without the slightest idea of what he had in mind. Not here. The ideas pour forth in a white light that has to be experienced. It really has to be experienced!! I love these performances. I will play them until I die. Oh...and the recordings are technically excellent. At least when played through Levinson electronics and Maggies....superb!

2 out of 5 stars dead in the water.......2007-01-12

Sorry, I just don't like Barenboim's renditions. Beethoven is my favourite composer, depending on my mood that is, and nothing moves me as his music can. But I just don't get Barenboim's renditions... doesn't do a thing for me. Something of Beethoven's depth and richness gets totally "lost in translation".

Better off finding a better performance of these if you really want to be "blown away". My favorite "Beethoven" conductor would have to be Herbert von Karajan; and as for individual pianists my all time favorite is Maurizio Pollini, whose performances are exquisite, in both technique and expression! If you are a music lover you should really check his work out if you haven't already. My favorite Beethoven CD by him is "Die Spaten Klaviersonaten" (Beethoven) by Deutsche Grammophon in their "legendary recordings" series. It is a real gem! (the sound quality is excellent also)

5 out of 5 stars Sublime expression nourished by a colossal vision!.......2006-03-23

Thanks to this immense and untiring activity in the field of the orchestral direction, his vision as pianist has enriched himself quite a lot: Barenboim performs these well known Sonatas with a splendid architectural construction; according Schnabel `s tradition.

And that is a very remarkable good point in this musical moment where the pianist technique is eclipsing and even annulling the personal approach in the most of pianists all over the world. Honesty, conviction, vision and commitment dress those interpretations loaded of expression and personality.

In the great tradition of the great Beethovenian keyboard giants of the past, Daniel explores and plays every little bar with that well felt intensity of someone who in Beethoven `s there is much more than simple music. In Beethoven the music is not a goal by itself; but a revelation superior to any philosophy; all his musical legacy possess values that are placed of the standards. There is not art without second intention and that is precisely what Barenboim has made with this fabulous cycle of Beethoven Sonatas.

If you really want to listen remarkable performances far beyond of the trivial conventionalisms, go for this record.

5 out of 5 stars Performed with great enthusiasm.......2004-05-16

This is classic early Barenboim (he was just 24 when he started recording this set in 1966). He is very enthusiastic and expressive (if you don't like him, he "takes liberties" and "shows off"). The slow movements are veerrry slow, and the fast ones really rip. Pianissimo is extremely soft, and fortissimo rattles the windows! [My wife insists that I wear headphones for late-night listening.]

Personally, I think his style is just right for Beethoven (but perhaps just a bit much when he plays Mozart). I'm very glad that I bought this set, but some might prefer Brendell's (Phillips) or Kempff's (DG) more sedate versions.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful articulation is her hallmark.......2007-07-09

The collection is spectacular. Larrocha's nimble fingers and clear articulation make it a joy to listen to her interpretations of Mozart. The very familiar "A la turca" is given a lighthearted yet sensitive interpretation that makes it a great listening experience. This is definitely a set to own.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing performances of amazing music!.......2006-09-27

I can't compare this to other Mozart Sonata cycles, but after looking hard at which set to purchase, I bought these and have been extremely pleased. I have not noticed any recording problems with the 2nd and 3rd disks, but I am no expert. I think the whole set sounds wonderful! And you cannot beat the price. I just wish she had a complete cycle of Mozart's Piano Concerti available!

3 out of 5 stars Good Performance, bad recording.......2004-09-14

The performance of Laroccha is exceptional, the trills are fantastic and some of the sonatas are almost perfect. The whole compilation sounds very mozartian and may disturb some people that are used into more sweet and passion performances. However the recording of the 2nd and 3rd CD is terrible, it sounds like there is echo in the recording and it becomes very annoying and fuzzy. The key of a good mozart recording is brightness and music purity, which definately this compilation lacks.
Brendel's mozart sonatas sound better for me, however he has not recorded all of them in a single complilation such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Devoted collection by a mature virtuoso........2004-02-07

Listen to Alicia de Larrocha performing the exposition of the first movement of Mozart's Piano Sonata in Bb major, K. 333--my favorite of the great composer's sonata; the absolute pinnacle of Classical beauty. You will hear a consummate artist devoted to the detail and refinement of this glorious music. Collected here in 5 CDs are the complete Mozart Sonatas and a few minor works to fill out the discs. I don't believe in the concept of a 'definitive' performance or recording-especially for a body of work as extensive and diverse as this, and so would never claim such a title for this or any performance-but de Larrocha's set is definitely worth having. She takes a refined, subtle approach, never exaggerating or turning Mozart into a Romantic, but always emphasizing the Classical sense of balance. Even in as "romantic" a work as the Presto of the Sonata in A minor K. 310, she plays expressively and emotionally, but within a Classical aesthetic, always exercising great control and touch. Dynamics and tempi are varied, certainly, but within a more discrete range than some of our more flamboyant pianists. This, for me, is the charm of de Larrocha's approach-perhaps, for some listeners, its downfall. Here's where the concept of definitive recordings fails completely. Do we try to listen to Mozart in an historical context, as he himself might have heard it, or do we take a Postmodern approach? Having lived after the Romantic period and even the Twentieth Century now, do we perform and prefer Mozart played on an instrument he never knew, allowing innovations of interpretation developed after his death to shape a new vision of his works? Both are possible, and in today's world, where Bond and Maksim pass unremarked as Classical musicians to my great disgust, mass audiences give no favor to historical context. De Larrocha clearly prefers the informed, appropriate approach, although she plays on a modern grand piano, and the music glows under her loving hands. Listen, for example, to the lovely Adagio from K. 280, one of Mozart's earlier sonatas.

These performances are not newly recorded-once again, the recording companies are putting out new product by repackaging old material. But in this case, the quality of the material is so good that I can scarcely complain-its old wine in new bottles! The CDs were recorded in 1990 and 1991, when the Barcelonian pianist was almost 70 years old. I certainly hope that I'm capable of similar accomplishment at that age-so I'd better sign off now and get practicing!

Claudio Arrau played with seriousness of purpose that could make other pianists seem like dilettantes and with respect for the composer's score that bordered on veneration. He had nothing but scorn for pianists who played the opening of Beethoven's Opus 111 with two hands instead of one because there were fewer risks. If something was technically difficult, Arrau assumed that the composer had written it that way because the difficulties had an expressive value that it was the interpreter's duty to find.

Arrau's devotion to Beethoven is memorialized by this budget-priced, 14-CD collection of his recordings, mostly from the 1960s, of the composer's 32 sonatas, five concertos (with Bernard Haitink conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam), and most important sets of variations. His Beethoven is not always successful. His sometimes ponderous seriousness keeps early works, such as the Sonata No. 3 and the Concerto No. 2, from smiling, and his lack of spontaneity makes the whimsy in Sonata No. 26 and the "Diabelli Variations" sound labored. But in the composer's weightiest works, Arrau can produce revelations. Certainly, no one plays Sonata No. 32 better. The first movement sounds like thunder that comes ever closer and the finale's chains of trills, played with exquisite finish and expressive perfection, transport the listener to a higher realm. If Arrau could be single-minded in his devotion to the composer's score, he also believed that music could encompass everything. When Arrau was at his best--as he frequently is in this set--it does. --Stephen Wigler

5 out of 5 stars The one collection I cannot imagine being without.......2007-01-30

It would be absurd to recommend recommending one Beethoven cycle to the exclusion of all others, yet it is Arrau's cycle to which I repeatedly return, despite some flaws mentioned by other reviewers.

They are flaws which can be forgiven. Scherzi which would be brimming with mirth & vitality in the hands of others may come up short, but it is more than compensated for by the revelations to be found as Arrau explores every aspect of Beethoven at his most profound. There always seems to be something new to be discovered. Flabby? It is hard to imagine how someone could come to this conclusion.

Even the sound quality for recordings dating back into the 1960's has been remastered so as to be acceptable to all but the most spoiled of listeners, who apparently are satisfied only with the most seamless homogenized studio sound. Those who can't get past the slightly imperfect sound quality are focusing on the wrong details.

If the greatness of the performance were not enough, the price should be enough to convince any serious music lover to add these to a CD collection. One cannot overstate how rewarding this collection will be to anyone who does not yet know the artistry of Arrau.

5 out of 5 stars MASTERY.......2007-01-26

One man's viewpoint: Arrau amazes me as he sets the notes down with such clean deliberation! Total command. No matter how fast Beethoven is charging along. And as Arrau gets every note, we find the real Beethoven genius shining through - after all, as raw material, this is some of the finest piano music anywhere. Of course, this playing delivers passion and heart-and-soul communication too. And a sense of commitment and strength.
I suggest this set - with about nine stars! Mastery in art. *** For a lighter, more joyful touch - and great tone - ALSO get hold of O'Conor's set of the 32. I suggest this set - with about nine stars!

5 out of 5 stars Magisterial... mystical.......2006-11-03

I've been listening to Beethoven's sonatas for fifty years and have heard all of them by some, and some of them by all the available recorded performers. Overall, Claudio Arrau is my favorite interpreter of the sonatas. To me he has an inner affinity with Beethoven that is uncanny. Beethoven was a man of great character. And that greatness, detached from his person in the form of musical ideas, enters the listener through intermediaries such as Arrau. When it is done right, it works a sort of righteous therapy, and makes the listener a better person for the hearing.

Arrau describes Beethoven's greatness in his essay "Thoughts on Beethoven" in the 33 1/3 Philips LP edition. "Beethoven has always stood for the spirit of man victorious. His message of endless stuggle concluding in the victory of renewal and spiritual rebirth...his life was an existential fight for survival...In the sense that he mastered both his life and his art to reach the ultimate heights of creation and transfiguration, he will last as long as man's spirit to prevail lasts on this earth." Part of the greatness of Beethoven's character came from his ability to be intimately close and at the same time at an infinite distance above his listener. Arrau possesses this same character, and his qualities as a man and artist are why he is able to so aptly render the greatness of Beethoven.

A book titled "Conversations with Arrau" was written by Joseph Horowitz to celebrate the artists's 80th birthday in 1982. I've only read the extracts published with the Philips edition, but there is enough information to get a feel for Arrau's character. He guarded the purity of his environment. He shunned parties and avoided small talk. He never drank or smoked, never learned to drive a car, boil an egg, or even operate a phonograph. His only hobby was gardening. Horowitz describes him as the embodiment of the nineteenth-century model of the artist as solitary, suffering hero. He was small (5'6") and frail, but in 1982 at age 80 he was still playing more that 70 concerts a season.

Rather than launch a discussion of his individual works (this has been done admirably by many of the reviewers) I will remark on just a few. I never properly appreciated the Fourth and the Seventh Sonatas until I heard Arrau's reading of these works. His Fourth takes 31 minutes, 30 seconds. Annie Fischer, another great interpreter of Beethoven, plays it in 27 minutes, 30 seconds. And Ms. Fischer does not play at a hurried tempo.

Yes, Arrau plays the sonatas at a slower tempo than any other interpreter. He also achieves a mystical quality in his interpretations that is unmatched. The second movement of the Seventh comes in at 10 min, 30 seconds. It is the greatest 10 1/2 minutes of piano music ever conceived. When interpreted by Arrau it becomes a microcosm of Beethoven's life and work. The second movement of the Appassionata is a sacred hymn.

Arrau's five piano concertos are splendid. I've heard no other renditions of the concertos with slow movements that equal Arrau's. No one plays the middle movements with his expressiveness and sense of the numinous. And his rendition of the "Eroica Variations" is on a par with the top few recordings of this piece.

If you have any interest in Beethoven, at whatever level, this bargain is outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven + Arrau = Divinity.......2006-10-29

If you love Beethoven, Arrau's interpretation will certainly be a joyful addition to your classical music collection. For me, his is the definitive Beethoven.

Though some will likely disagree, I have listened to many other great pianists' recordings of Beethoven sonatas, and they are great (don't get me wrong). Yet Arrau is unique in his ability to bring to light subtleties in the melodies that no one else can, and these often turn out to be the most enlightening and resonant of passages. His Op. 111 is indeed unparalleled, and his recording of the 2nd movement is one of my favorite pieces in the world. On top of that, his rendition of the Moonlight Sonata, his Waldstein, his Concertos, every recording on this boxed set is a testament to the depth Arrau worked diligently and consciously to achieve; depth that transcends technical showmanship and for the intuitive listener can certainly elicit fleeting glimpses of divine ecstasy.

At any price, it's a steal - beauty of this magnitude is all too rare.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven himself would be proud........2006-06-19

This is a masterpiece. Don't listen to the one negative review, as this guy is tone deaf. This compilation of Beethoven's music is a treasure to behold. A bargain at twice the price, this is well worth the money. Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars It stays with them..........2005-10-24

I enjoyed reading the reviews of parents whose kids have recently discovered "Classical Kids." I'm about to order the boxed set for my kids, ages 21, 19 and 16 because the nineteen-year-old, who has a college radio show and loves a wide variety of music, remembers this series (then only on cassette) with great affection and wants to hear them again. Those of you wondering whether it's worth it or not to try to introduce kids to classical music this way, be assured it works. We've turned one of Mr. Bach's lines into a family "saying:" "the more you study, the more you know; the more you know, the more you appreciate; the more you appreciate, the more you love." A great series!

Many years ago I purchased my first CD in this series, "Beethoven Lives Upstairs." My children and I were delighted with it. I then discovered that there were more and searched them all out, one by one. My children, now 11, 9 & 5, have listened to these stories as they fall asleep for years. They each have a favorite composer and have gone on to learn more about them. These stories are a great introduction to some of our greatest composers. Not to mention a good intro to history, too!

Imagine my delight that they are now in one boxed set! Now when asked, I suggest this set. What a great way to get it ALL! I truly believe that by surrounding our children with a variety of good music (including POP music) and information they will grow up with a greater appreciation for music and the arts.

1 out of 5 stars Not What I expected.......2002-09-20

I love the idea, but I don't want to expose my children to the stories in these cd's. They contain children talking back to their parents, disrespectful language, sorcery, etc. If you don't like Harry Potter, you won't like these CD's.

5 out of 5 stars Music, history, culture, & intriguing story -Amazing!.......2002-04-08

My 6 year old son loves music...and stories! Here is the prefect combo. Lovely music of the composer accomapnies a fictional story which weaves the composer's life, the culture of his homeland as well as history...in an intriguing and fun way! Now, my son can pick out pieces he hears on the classical radio station. He really enjoys the stories and can tell people @ carnival in Venice, Italy and tidbits @ Beetoven and the Magic Flute by Mozart! A must for any child with any of these interests! We also have enjoyed the CD's and have learned lots!
I only can wonder...what took whomever so long to broaden our horizons in such a way! BRAVO!

5 out of 5 stars Great series, great collection.......2001-04-22

We've had the CDs in this boxed set for over a year now. The Classical Kids series has been wonderful. We have two boys (now 6 and 8) and this has been a great introduction to classical music. At first, the kids loved the stories which provide a sense of history and place and, ultimately, keep the kids interested in the entire CD. As they listened (time and time again), they started to pay more attention to the musical portions. Recently, we've been able to tell that they've picked up a sense of the music as we've listed to classical music on the car radio. Time and again, they perk up when listening to a piece of music and surprise us by saying "That's Beethoven". Sure enough - they've picked up something about the style of music that's characteristic of Beethoven. Sometimes it's the snippet of music from the CD and other times it's just the rhythms that are characteristic of that piece. As a family, we all recommend this.

3 out of 5 stars "Playing With a Lot of Energy".......2005-10-26

Clementi is such an important piano music composer that virtually no pianists can neglect his works. Yet, regrettably there is so little recorded Clementi available either in Amazon or elsewhere.

The pianist we have here is Balazs. He is Hungarian, a former pupil of Kocsis (a formost pianist/composer). For whatever it is worth, Balazs took 4th place in Leeds International Piano Competition in 1990. His father was a professor in Liszt Academy who also composed. The British press commended his playing for it's energy and imagination.

As pointed out by some other review(s), he is fast, as fast (and as even) as a machine gun. Technically, he is "brilliant" if not equally vibrant. There is indeed a lot of "energy" in his playing; his touch is nice too, all prerequisites of a virtuoso. But there isn't much in this record to show us the full spectrum of his imagination, let alone poetry, and the influence of the above mentioned two composers on him is yet to be discovered. Some slow movements in the sonatas are, however, rather charming.

On the whole, this is a very worthwhile reference especially at a budget price. And for those who have more time, they may as well check out Maria Tipo who has recorded quite a number of Clementi's sonatas for an Italian reading.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Piano Music Lover.......2005-08-02

EXCELLENT! EXCELLENT! EVERY single piece on this CD is great! I usually have a few favourites within a single CD but I love every single performance on this CD! And you can have this at an unbelievable price too! I found every piece exciting and just enjoyable. This is now my FAVOURITE classical piano CD and I think it will remain so for a very long time. I've listened to several other compositions of Muzio Clementi but this is by far the best.

4 out of 5 stars Overall, Well Done.......2001-12-08

The playing on this CD is not only technically brilliant, it's on the quicker side of the expected tempo range. Szokolay's comprehension of the music is such that he can deliver dynamic, rapid performances while still retaining the clarity of each individual note. My only complaint is that, as others have noted, these performances are somewhat lacking in feeling. Granted, there's a difference between the emotional content of a Clementi sonatina and a Beethoven sonata, but these pieces are all extremely well-crafted works by a minor master, and they do indeed have their passionate moments. It would have been nice to have more emphasis placed on these emotional spots. That's a small flaw, however, in an otherwise brilliantly-played collection of well-written music. I still admire Clementi's tuneful melodies and artistic balance ("Mozart Lite," one might say), and the playing on this CD, while somewhat flat, does nothing to deter me from that opinion overall.

5 out of 5 stars Fast, brilliant, exciting - one of my favorites.......1999-07-17

I bought the CD because my daughter was learning one of the selections in her piano class. I had no idea what to expect but the style of the composer and the technical skill of the performer have made this one of my favorite CDs (my collection exceeds 400 CDs). Clementi's use of thirds in the left hand lends his sonatinas a unique sound and the speed of the trills and runs makes this an exciting selection of pieces. Considering the pittance this CD costs I would think buying it is a no-brainer.

5 out of 5 stars Fast, technical but brilliant.......1999-03-23

The music is fast not gentle or romantic. Technically flawless but I find it lacking in mood. but still worth the price for real early piano buffs.

4 out of 5 stars Ruined by bad production decisions.......2006-07-14

The producer of this recording, Martha de Francisco, made a bad decision by including the applause after the live portions of the recording. It really spoils the peaceful mood generated by listening to this delightfully played music. Did she think that they had to "prove" that it was live? Did she think that the obnoxious clapping would "trick" the listeners into thinking that they were sitted on hardbacked chairs in an auditorium?

Nevertheless, Brendel doesn't let us down and delivers 69:55 minutes of perfectly executed Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Brendel at is best.......2006-03-01

This is an excellent CD. Brendel plays Mozart with such an elegance that you just want the CD to go on playing and playing.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart Informed by Beethoven and Schubert.......2002-08-04

It's the acute consciousness of Brendel that astounds. His conscious attention to each note--or, more precisely, to each phrase--its exact articulation--reminds me most (across cultures)of Miles Davis. Here the depth of Brendel's knowing of Beethoven and Schubert bracingly informs these Mozart sonatas. They lose any hint of the music box. Instead they are movingly expressive. Romantic? Perhaps. Yet with no implied program injected. The engineering is superlative. You have no sense, until the applause that follows the three sonatas, that these have been recorded live. Instead, you marvel that these are all "one takes." Though Brendel is self-effacing, these sonatas sound lived in.

5 out of 5 stars Brendel Remains Our Finest Interpreter Of Mozart.......2002-05-24

Alfred Brendel demonstrates that he is our foremost interpreter of Mozart in this splendid CD of several of Mozart's piano sonatas and the rondo. His performances are replete with both brilliant technique and keen musical scholarship which fans of Alfred Brendel have come to expect. Brendel's playing is elegant, without sounding at all Romantic; I suspect his phrasing remains consistent with Mozart's intentions. The only negative note is the audience's applause at the end of each piece; otherwise, the sound quality is what you'd expect in a well balanced studio recording.

5 out of 5 stars Alfred Brendel Plays Mozart.......2000-08-14

Brendel is an exceptional pianist. However, this recording is much to distorted-sounding. Brendel humms and coughs. It is a live recording which is not good for the fan of Mozart who wants to hear the sound. Not a good sound. Brendel is remarkable in capturing the clear and brilliance of Mozart piano sonatas. The Turkish Rondo is well done, the highlight of the work. The sonata is characteristic of Mozart who added a Turkish flavor to his regular sonata forms. This is not too unusual for Wolfgang. The Abduction of the Seraglio singspiel opera is a delightful combination of Classcical sound with Turkish music- cymbals, janissary and timpani. The Turkis effect in the Rondo is heard very clearly by Brendel and the conclusion resonates the Finale to the Seraglio.

5 out of 5 stars Mozart and Uchida.......2005-04-16

Of all of the names of composers in musical history, Mozart is one of most well-known. As a composer of the Classical era he was expected to write music both pleasing and accessible to the common musician. However, Mozart was not always so light and optimistic as he is commonly known. As often as he could, he placed in his music passages which during his time would have been considered dissonant and unpleasant. Perhaps one the most known of these works is his symphony no. 40 with its rather jarring first theme, but this other side of him can also be brought out in most all of his works in some section of each one of them.
As an interpreter Mitsuko Uchida brings out the darker side of Mozart while retaining the fresh, light sound he is so remembered for. Two things that stand out about her playing are her light tone and clarity. Nothing sounds lost or passed over. Also, the listener is given an excellent sense of direction without over-exaggeration on the part of the performer.

The first piece on the CD is Sonata in C, K. 545, the sonata that Mozart wrote for beginners and which almost every piano student today can testify to having played. The first movement is in sonata-allegro form, and Mitsuko Uchida shows us the bass notes as well as the memorable treble melody by clarity of tone. She distinguishes the recapitulation from the exposition by playing the first theme piano instead of mezzo forte as she did in the exposition. The ending coda goes through dynamic gradations of mezzo forte to forte to mezzo piano.

Movement two begins simply, a beginner's piece yet thoughtfully wrought out with a slow tempo and slight rubatos. In the third section of the movement, Uchida brings out Mozart's darker side with the ascending scales in the bass. All of a sudden all is quiet, and the movement rounds off with a coda.

The third movement is in rondo form. Uchida plays it in a defined manner with a clear sense of beat. By not playing it too fast, she reminds the listener that this sonata was written for beginners who do not have the technical efficiency that much of Mozart and other's music requires. She here brings out the happy side of Mozart, yet there is a certain caution that can be perceived. A heavy coda is followed by a silent ending.

The second work on the CD, the Rondo in A minor, K. 511 opens up with a pensive theme that could be mistaken for Chopin by an unwary listener. However, over the course of time this piece changes to a contrapuntal style not unlike that of Bach. After this section a series of ascending scales lead back to the main theme. Mozart playfully changes the accompaniment to the theme every time it returns. Near the end, bass arpeggios accentuate the theme played in Bach-like imitation between the two hands. Then there is a Romantic style coda and a quiet ending. Overall, Mitsuko Uchida makes this piece defined as a rondo by clearly bringing out the theme every time it appears in the music.

The final composition played on this CD is the Sonata in F, K.533/494. The first movement is, of course, in sonata-allegro form. The themes are Haydnesque, and are followed by modulating bridges consisting of imitation between the hands. The development section busies both hands also, but Mitsuko Uchida makes it sound simple and plays the arpeggios very clearly. In the recapitulation she brings out the bass notes that accompany the themes more than she did in the exposition. Theme two really sounds like a fugue with a solo entry in the bass.

Movement two then commences with embellishments and a melody reminiscent of that of theme one in movement one. Then there is a chromatic passage after which the second section displays loud, dark notes that turn into chords with downward arpeggios. This brings to mind the more pessimistic mood of Mozart's symphony no. 40. A light tune finishes off the movement.

The final movement is a rondo with a cheerful theme that is accentuated by Uchida's clear phrasing and articulation. The theme is variegated in its accompaniment each time it appears. All of a sudden in the middle of the movement one hears dark chords and arpeggios followed by a long trill. This whole part reminds one of a cadenza. The coda displays imitation between hands and the work is closed.

    -Contrapunctus

4 out of 5 stars Lovely as raindrops, and just as ephemeral.......2005-03-23

Mitsuko Uchida has an incredibly delicate touch and brings a childlike grace to these elegant Mozart pieces. Her sound is like falling rain: plaintive, glistening, and ephemeral. Though she certainly can play with force and power when the piece calls for it, she never abandons the elegance and precision of her characteristic style. You can hear every note and every harmony, and when the sound fades it leaves no bitter aftertaste.

Or indeed any aftertaste at all. I actually prefer somewhat warmer, more emotionally generous readings of Mozart. But I admit I can't think of anyone else who plays these elegant pieces with such crystalline calm and focus. I think Mozart would have liked these performances very much.

5 out of 5 stars Mitsuko Uchida is supreme.......2002-12-13

This artist has exquisite touch. If one could psychically move the keys of the piano, and express the delicacy of thought, it would sound like Mitsuko Uchida. You are hearing a soul when Uchida plays, hers or very possibly Mozart's. I would give any work of hers the highest recommendation possible.

    5 out of 5 stars Astonishing!.......2002-05-02

K545 is Mozart's most popular sonata, and Mitsuko Uchida interprets an astonishing performance. Very special.
