Absolutely Fabulous.......2004-09-01

Every time I listen to this CD, I melt. Dave McKenna's mastery of the languid style is non pareil. Eschewing the frenzied style of too many notes all blurred together, Dave instead makes every single note count. There's just enough lay-back to create a subtle sense of tension that is relieved with each succulent phrase. Don't let this mislead you into thinking this performance is slow. It's not, by any means. Dave manages to create extraordinary energy from simplicity.

My only regret in this recording is the microphone technique. It is clear that the microphones were placed inside the piano, far too close to the hammers and strings, giving the instrument a false stereo separation, and a sound that is almost electronic. The instrument is tuned nearly perfectly, at least. I wish these Maybeck recordings were done with better microphone technique, because the performances are all superb.

There are only a few recordings that move me profoundly. Richard Goode playing the late Beethoven and Schubert sonatas; Andras Schiff playing Bach's English suites; and now, Dave Mckenna's recital at Maybeck, playing the greatest music this country has produced. BUY THIS RECORD!

A Pianist's Pianist.......2002-04-30

Since the evolution of the acoustic bass and improved recording technology, most jazz pianists have neglected left-hand technique, using the appendage less for rhythmic purposes than to fill out the harmony a bit and to "position" themselves in the chord sequence that the right hand is improvising upon. As a result, solo piano represents a formidable challenge for most players--virtually all of whom either allow the rhythm to be implied or overcompensate by playing with lots of additional notes in the right hand. Dave McKenna is the most notable exception in jazz.

And unlike the remaining "two-handed, two-beat" players who risk sounding dated by imitating the "stride piano" style of Fats Waller or James P. Johnson, McKenna reproduces the 4/4 rhythmic foundation of post-swing era musicians. He walks bass lines with the harmonic independence and rock steady time of the best bass players and drummers--while improvising independent, no-frills melodies in the right hand.

This recording of a live concert date before a small but "knowing" audience captures the virtuosity as well as the essence of McKenna better than any other album by him. Besides demonstrating his musicianship, it reveals his enormous repertory and his taste and imagination in selecting tunes and grouping them in medleys. Who would have ever thought of coming up with a "Knowledge" medley, and who would have known ten different tunes answering to the theme? This is one of the recordings I play not simply for pleasure but, in more ways than one, for knowledge.

Impeccable solo piano.......2002-04-16

Dave McKenna is one of the few pianists who actually has a sense of swing & time that is better than most drummers & bassists. Concord usually records him in a solo setting & that's actually his best format, showing off his unique combination of delicacy & barrelhouse power. He has a formidable amount of pop songs in his head, & likes to medley them in themed groupings: the medley here is about "Knowledge", & includes a wonderfully hard-hitting "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", a gentle "I Didn't Know about You" & a rousing "I Never Knew". The encore is a "Limehouse Blues" that nicely shows off in succession his dreamy & swinging sides. McKenna is never less than excellent on any of his recordings--he's a pro's pro--& this is as solid as any of them.

A special piano CD........1999-08-17

The opening song, Dream Dancing, is a textbook example of solo piano at its best. First, a dreamy introduction, showing rich chords and a delicate touch...then he shifts into a mid tempo, the left hand providing a walking bass line, then a guitar like strumming sound before a graceful ending. This is a special performance by a unique artist who actually excels in a solo setting.

When Emil Gilels made his first appearance in the West--in Florence on June 11, 1951--at the height of the Cold War, he must have felt the weight of history riding on his shoulders. He was the first Soviet musician sent to perform for Western audiences since Sergei Prokofiev had been entrusted with a similar mission 30 years earlier. As we can judge from Volume 5 in Doremi's Emil Gilels Legacy series, Gilels rose to the occasion magnificently. He opens Beethoven's "Appassionata" with great (though unexaggerated) pathos and progresses to climaxes of tremendous grandeur. His gale-force tempos in the finale may not scrupulously observe the composer's cautionary "Allegro ma non troppo," but Gilels never shortchanges the music's passion. He accelerates to an even more phenomenal tempo for the "Presto" in the coda, while negotiating it with laser-beam accuracy. The pianist plays the Russian works (by Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, and Balakirev) with his characteristic beauty of sound and magisterial command. Even in the furious onslaught of Islamey, Gilels still manages to make Balakirev's exotic textures luminous, glinting with colors that seem to come from another galaxy. The then 35-year-old pianist was not yet the stylish Mozartean he was to become 20 years later. Nevertheless, he invests each note in Mozart's anguished C Minor Sonata with a wealth of emotion. The result is a magical web of sounds--not authentically Mozartean by current standards, perhaps, but a performance in which the composer's profound humanity is palpable in its tenderness. --Stephen Wigler

Jose At HIs Best!.......2000-07-24

If you have read my review of Carreras' "My Romance" album from a couple of years ago I stated that he should stay away from show tunes because of diction problems. I stated that he is at his best when he is in recital. This album "The Recital" was recorded live at the Vienna Opera House in September of 1988; just 14 months after being diagnosed with leukimia and undergoing several months of treatment which included two bone marrow transplants that eventually saved his life. The voice was saved. Now here comes this jewel of a recital from when Jose, in my opinion, was at the top of vocal career. I immediately noticed that opera arias are missing. But this is okay. The art of song is what this recital is all about. Included are many songs appearing for the first time on disc from Jose. I could go track by track and breakdown the emotion and musicality of Jose, but I won't. You just have to hear it for yourself. Then you will realize that Jose was, at the time, the best and most in demand tenor in the world. Vocal decline has fallen upon the great Carreras the past few years and we are all sorry for that. This disc is a must for your collection because it is presented with Carreras in terrific voice and stamina. Buy it. You won't be sorry. A similar recital is also available on video from Kultur. I am not sure if it is the same concert but it has many of the same selctions as the new disc (including the encores). The video is for sale here at Amazon.

Carreras At His Best!.......2000-07-22

Jose Carreras lost little after his bout with a life threatening illness. Although he excluded operatic arias in his recitals this still is a must cd to have. Many of these songs are relased for the first time on any audio format. Inlcluded here are songs from Liszt, Puccini, Tosti, Massenet, and others. This is the best format to hear Jose Carreras. Live in recital with only a piano. Jose clearly shows that he has shunned death and returned to treat us all.
