the last disc of 3.the greatest set in music history. .......2005-08-18

this is the last disc of the 3 disc set.its supposed to stimulate the creative juices.it gets your seritonin going like prozac.well,ok.but,anyway,its quite good.my favorite song on it just goes to show how inspirational the genius mozart was.he was alive in like 1770 and was dead by 30.he did this song and it was catchy.much later it was put to words with the tune still intact as "twinkle twinkle little star".so itll help the kids off to bed,but then someone else took the old indian created english alphabet and put it to music."the abc song" was also put to the same tune and now teaches millions of children to take thier 1st steps towards learning to read and write every day.it was also the very first recorded music when thomas edison 1st tested the phonograph sucessfully.its what he used.on this album thier are many fast paced[as fast as they get]songs that stimulate your brain.i dont personaly need any help in the creative department and just listen for the wonderful music.the twinkle twinkle little star song is like 12 minutes long and the performer uses mozarts innovative style to play it in literaly dozens of different ways.ballad,bedtime,frenzied,more notes,less notes,you name it!then theres a whole bunch of other great songs on it.if you call yourself a music lover and havent at least heard these songs,then you are sadly mistaken.a musical landmark!

Upbeat, but pleasant.......2002-02-02

I'm not the hugest classical afficianado, but this CD is very appealing. I bought the first in the series, Strengthen the Mind, and found mostly the same old crap on it that I had on three other Mozart CDs.

Franz Joseph Haydn said of W.A. Mozart(1756-1791) to Leopold Mozart (his father):"I tell you before God and as an honest man, your son is the greatest composer I know in person or by name, he has taste, and in addition to that, the greatest knowledge of composition."
Between 1770 and 1773, Mozart made several visits to Italy which influenced him greatly in his writing of Church Music, for he encountered the music of Palestrina and Allegri et al , a tradition which extended back to those composers, but also included concerted church music in the modern or 'rococo' style. This style with its instrumental 'sinfonias' and florid vocal writing alternating with sober, seemingly archaic movements in the strict style was a mixture of austere and decorative settings and is very much alive in Mozart's Salzburg church music, notably the Vesper Psalms.
Mozart completed the Mass in C major,K317, in January, 1779. Many long-standing but probably erroneous explanations of the nickname 'Coronation Mass' have been put forth, but in fact, there is no real evidence for any of these ideas, so we don't know why, but it doesn't matter at all to us
who love his music.
In his last two years at Salzburg Mozart wrote his 2 Vesper Cycles, one of which is 'Vesperae solennes de confessore' K339, in 1780; the liturgical texts are Psalms 109 to 112, Psalm 116 and the Magnificat canticle, each of these 6 parts ending with the doxology.
The Italian operatic tradition held mostly at bay in the Salzburg Masses and vespers had earliler poured forth at its most undiluted in the solo motet 'Exsultate, jubilate', K165. It was composed in 1773, and must surely rank as the most popular of Mozart's vocal work.
What an incredible genius this man was, and will forever be in the eyes of history; I always wonder what else would have come forth from this 'marvel'!?
For the most part, I do like the singing on this disc; especially the Choir, but Trevor Pinnock is a reliable name in the field of music, so one can trust what he puts together. The soloists are good; my preference is for the Soprano (Barbara Bonney); her rendition of 'Laudate Dominum' is superb. in fact , memorable. It's all enjoyable and well-done!

This is a wonderful recording with the highlight being Barbara Bonney's soprano. Her voice is rich and uplifting. My favorite is the Agnus Dei of the Coronation Mass where her voice is almost angelic.

A Mozart Mass with a Difference. Buy It........2006-08-20

The 'Coronation Mass' or 'Mass in C major K. 317' by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is just a bit different from the half dozen of Mozart's other masses I've been listening to lately. It is certainly at the other end of the spectrum from the great and famous 'Requiem' or 'unfinished' Mass, so famous from the end of the movie 'Amadeus'. This stands to reason, as the Coronation Mass is a celebration, while the Requiem is a funeral.

The CD is rounded out with two pieces of liturgical music Mozart did for the Archbishop of Salzburg, who happened to like his Masses and other church music to be short. That's why Mozart's masses finish up within 45 minutes while Bach's grand masses run for close to two hours or more.

If you aren't necessarily set on owning a performance of every single Mozart mass, this is a good bookend to your copy (probably more than one) of the 'Requiem'.

While the period instruments used in this performance are nice, I feel no big difference between it and Mozart done with a 20th century ensemble.

Beautiful Mozart Choral Compositions.......2005-10-27

This is a beautiful recording. Very clear, an excellent choir and wonderful Mozart compositions. I would recommend this CD to any lover of classical choral music.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo proved itself pliable enough when the a capella group was heavily featured on Paul Simon's Graceland. Other crossover collaborations have followed, but few work as seamlessly as this collection, which features old LBM songs, Zulu traditionals and European classical material done in collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra. The rich vocal sound literally fuses with the classical musicians in much the same way as a classical choral group does. To its credit, the orchestra (and arranger Isak Roux) loosens up to fit the more oral/aural traditions of the singers--the music is less precise and reliant on virtuosity. The orchestra provides a particularly sympathetic counterpoint on the traditional "Awu Wemadoda" and is downright playful sounding on "Dona Nobis Pacem." Sounding as elegant and reverent, Ladysmith more than meets the orchestra halfway on the famous Bach choral piece "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." Making borders and boundaries irrelevant, this is a work of startling beauty that couldn't be improved upon. --Tad Hendrickson

I have been a fan of Ladysmith for many years and have a few of their albums but this is simply amazing! Music truly has no boundaries and they have used their God given talent to touch the lives of many people. It doesn't sound like it's possible, but they have really crossed many boundaries and this album is just another example of how far one can go if only they believe!

This CD has multipal messages, but the one that strikes me most is the juxtaposition of European "classical" and African "classical". The human soul is one and at the same time unique. That message comes through clearly, and as a bonus, the powerful messages that each track provides in both content and style must not be missed.

I had never heard of this group before and since I like to investigate different types of music, I decided to give it a try. I have truly enjoyed this CD. The more I listen, the more I like. I would highly recommend.

When I first saw the album, I thought---what???? Traditionally, Ladysmith Black Mambazo sings acapella with the notable exceptions of the times they accompany Paul Simon. The group sings a beautiful, close harmony and uses vocalese techniques to provide the occasional percussive click or ululation. Still, the lineup was hard to resist.

"No Boundaries" is pretty amazing stuff, let me tell you. With the help of the English Chamber Orchestra directed by Ralph Gothoni, the two groups meet together on each other's common ground. Ladysmith sings traditional "Amazing Grace", Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" Schubert's "Sanctus." Then the orchestra gets into the African groove for music from South Africa.

Altogether a beautifully arranged, sung, and orchestrated work. If you are new to Ladysmith, this is a good CD to start. If you're an old fan, you'll definitely want "No Boundaries" to complete your collection.

The collaboration between Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the English Chamber Orchestra cannot be improved. The sound that both ensembles make together truly is beautiful indeed, as the original Mambazo songs (of which includes "Jabulani (Rejoice)", "Lifikile Ivangeli (The Gospel Arrives)"), the Zulu traditional selections ("Awu Wemadoda (Hey, Man)", "Walil'Umntwana (The Child is Crying)") to the classicals "Dona Nobis Pacem", a joyous song in its own right, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Ave Verum Corpus". This album definately and distinctly proves that music has no boundaries. Mambazo founder and lead singer Joseph Shabalala and Orchestra conductor Ralf Gothoni (along with arranger Isak Roux) have brought to their many fans a selection of compelling and captivating tunes.

I very much enjoy Wolfgang Holzmair and enjoyed his Beethoven and Haydn songs. They are not the last word in this music, however. Recordings of Beethoven's "An die Ferne Geliebte" by Thomas Allen and, especially, Stephen Genz, sweep away the Holzmnair version.

Both the Englishman Allen and the German Genz have bigger voices they use to greater advantage than Holzmair in the raw emotional sections of Beethoven's only song cycle. In addition, the Genz CD contains 18 of Beethoven's German songs and Allen's contains a wonderful concert recorded by British radio that includes songs by Haydn, Beethoven and Wolf.

Allen does not have Holzmair's sensitivity but he more than makes up for it by blowing the top of the building he sings in. His immense vocals are overpowering but still no match for Genz, one of the most brilliant young singers to come around in many years. He matches Allen's vocal power and exceeds Holzmair's sensitivity to the text.

Fans of Holzmair can hear him at his very best in the Schubert song cycle "Schwanengesang" on Philips, if it is still in print. This is a venue that is most well suited to Holzmair's voice, style and delivery and is a cycle where he can excel against all comers. In Beethoven, I'm afraid he is of the second rank.

German lieder not by Schubert.......2001-06-05

Franz Schubert so dominates the world of German art song, both in quality and quantity, that it's easy to forget that other composers have contributed beautiful examples. Holzmair's current CD attempts to redress the balance by offering works by the great Viennese Classicists: Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, some familiar, others less so. Certainly Beethoven's _An die ferne Geliebte_ and Mozart's setting of Goethe's _Das Veilchen_ match anything by Schubert in emotional profundity and matching of music and text. The late Masonic "Cantata," K. 619, by Mozart is also a real find. Haydn's songs, while pleasant, occupy on the whole a somewhat lower musical plane.

Holzmair and his pianist Imogen Cooper offer elegant, highly polished performances. The baritone has a light, smooth voice, almost tenor-like in timbre (he soars to easy high Gs and A-flats), and though he is never less than fully committed emotionally, at times one misses a weightier tone quality, especially in the Beethoven cycle. His diction in the Haydn English songs is not always easily understandable (admittedly the poetry is florid and old-fashioned). Still, this CD makes for much enjoyable listening of frequently unfamiliar repertoire.

Holzmair gives us a very sweet and fresh performance here. His interpretation of some famous lieder( for example, Beethovan's An die ferne Geliebte ) gives new insight, and always in a delicate mood .In fact this is the best An die ferne Geliebte I've listened to. While with great Beethovan and fair Mozart, In my opinion the most outstanding part in this cd is Haydn's lieder. These sweet songs are almost forgotten by singers, and very few listeners know THERE WERE Haydn's lieder. Holzmair sings these songs with earnest and true understanding. And I think, If Holzmair could focus on words more, brings out the deep insight and power of every word in lieder, he will and must be a shining star in the lieder-singer world .Cooper's piano is excellent, the acostics balanced as well .

holzmair with his new cd's make me love him more. his voice are very beatiful. Holzmair's plangent, tenorish, gently vibrating voice just the right combination to all of this songs.The interpretations themselves abound in verbal and musical perceptions yet nothing is ever in the least exaggerated. this will be certainly one of my favorite cd's of the year.
