a wonderful collection.......2002-06-04

As the album title indicates, these performances were employed as the soundtrack for the film Un Coeur en Hiver, but for those who are looking for superior performances of Ravel's chamber music, this should be of no relevance. What is important is that here, on a single CD, you have idiomatic, deeply felt performances by excellent french musicians in very good sound of all of Ravel's chamber works with the exception of the string quartet (of which there are numerous recordings, most often coupled with the Debussy quartet) and the introduction and allegro (which is a 10-11 single movement work for string quartet plus flute, clarinet and harp-look for the recording by the Melos ensemble). No other such collection exists that contains so much of Ravel chamber music on a single CD. If you are interested in this music, buy it and enjoy.

Great film music is often described as music that doesn't make itself as noticeable, in order for the viewer to absorb him or herself to the character driven narrative of the film, while serving itself as a façade for the emotions that naturally arise from the progressive constrains of the narrative. This is partly true, as music has always captured an essence, which can strike itself as forceful or simple.

One could listen to the Ravel trio and say that it is a powerful composition, but this belief is often aroused because the Trio is a great masterpiece. So how could a film correctly use a legendary composition to serve its purpose without making the use of the composition, with respect to the movie, as trite and meager? The answer, as you watch the film, is quite simple: Make an honest, character-driven, cinematic masterpiece.

I've heard of the Ravel Trio and Sonatas before I saw the film, I don't remember what emotions aroused inside me as I heard the compositions, but I knew I was listening to one of the most passionate music that I've ever heard. So with great skepticism, I watched the film. So what were my thoughts after viewing the film? I must honestly say that I have never seen a movie that captured the internal expressions of the characters, while correctly translating the character-driven emotions to the soundtrack of the film, as magnificently used to the extent of "Un Coeur en Hiver."

The main character, Stephane, and his great love for music, while keeping himself isolated from those that love him by reasons that are of an unquestionably, enigmatic pragmatism, is greatly, yet surreptitiously, amplified by the premier movement of the Ravel Trio.

This is a great soundtrack that reveals the essence of one of the unfairly neglected series of composition. The "Un Coeur en Hiver" soundtrack is one of only a few albums that has these works of Ravel. I have heard every version in the market and this version, led by the energetic play by Jean-Jacques Kantorow, is, with the exception of the Shumsky and, to a less extent, Sitkovesky recordings, the highest in quality and execution.

Excellent recording of J-J Kantarow/Saint-Saens 3.......2007-06-05

Saint-Saens 3 in B minor is a war horse, make no mistake. It may not be as recognizable as Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Mendelssohn, or Beethoven but it certainly is in the same league as Sibelius, Wieniawski, the prokofievs and Bartoks. It's a techical masterpiece that is demanding yet entertaining. Kantorow plays it with aplomb, emphasizing the Gallic wit and pyrotechnics while still making a cogent musical argument. I would characterize him as a cross between Yehudi Menuhin and Joshua Bell. But he's got his own musical voice. This is very refined yet passionate playing. The Tapiola Sinfonietta are more of a chamber orchestra which is fine for this music. The recording quality is excellent. This recording is highly recommended. The filler pieces are just that, the concerto is the main entree.

Very nice performances, but............2006-01-24

Christian Lindberg is a master of the trombone, a virtuoso beyond compare, and a consummate musician. He can do whatever he likes with his instrument, which is why I looked forward to listening to this recording so much. However, on several listens, I have to say that these are NOT definitive performances of the concertos (Dennis Brain still wins by a mile!). The Tapiola Sinfonietta is superb, with the most beautiful textures, balance, and musicianship imaginable. The music sparkles and comes alive through their playing, but they constantly struggle to try and achieve the same clipped articulation style that Mr. Lindberg employs. He is lyrical when absolutely called for by the music, but he does not hold out phrases or notes as a regular practice, and does not use legato technique where the music simply demands it. Thus, the violins are always at odds with his phrasing whenever the lines are repeated between soloist and orchestra. I find myself constantly wishing he'd hold out notes for their full value, and not use an overly staccato technique. I admire the ability shown on this recording, but the solo part is distracting to me for this reason. Others may disagree, but I will search out other recordings by Tapiola, and continue to marvel at Mr. Lindberg's other recordings, while placing these performances well behind Mr. Brain's.

Wow.......2005-08-12

I was listening to the radio and heard what sounded like a Mozart horn concerto. But what in the world was it being played on? And who was playing it?

It was being played, stunningly, on a Conn 36H Alto Trombone! By Christian Lindberg. Um, it can't be easy to do that. Lindberg makes it seem so natural, and the concertos sound even better than they do on a French horn. I also like the cadenzas that Lindberg created for the third and fourth concertos.

Maybe the high quality of this music explains the program notes, which are the silliest I have ever seen. In the notes, Lindberg kids us by saying, along with other nonsense, that the concertos were not written "for the French horn, with its monstrous hand-stopping technique, but for the vastly superior hornbone."

This recording is terrific, and I very highly recommend it. If you haven't already heard it, you are in for a treat.

Finally.......2004-07-11

Many times I've wondered what's so great about Mozart. Now I know! Christian's interpretation of these famous Horn Concertos is flawless and in my opinion is it the best recording of those concertos. Christian has really brought the Alto trombone on a higher stage, first the Tenor and now the Alto. What's next?

This double-cd is worth to purchase for the second CD.On this are strong romantic works by Elias Parish-Alvars 1808-1849 .
One Harp Concerto in E flat major Op.98 ,witch is just a
beautiful romantic Harp Concerto. The Highlight of this Disc
is the Double Concerto for Harp and Piano , witch also is released as Concerto for two Harps. The contrast between the
Piano and Harp and the Orchestra is marvellous. In this very
melodic, about 22 Minutes long Concerto all works very well , the Piano-playing , the Orchestration ,-a real Masterpiece.It belongs to the best pieces for solo instruments and orchestra ever writen. Highly recommenable!
