4 out of 5 stars Interesting 20th Century German Compositions.......2001-05-05

A common criticism of Wilhelm Furtwangler's interpretations from the classical period is that he makes these score sound like they are from the romantic period. Perhaps when it comes to 20th century music, that is not such a bad thing.

Much of 20th century music, particularly when it nears the atonal region, is very much out of favor today. Classical music has always been a process of discovery and growth. Sadly, much of present classical music all but ignores the contributions of the 20th century, and instead tries to rehash old forms and styles.

This is why this CD is so interesting. Furtwangler, as with many great artists, was a caldron of contradictions. One of the most fascinating was that he was considered one of the last romantics, yet he championed much modern music, and premiered a number of important 20th century works (especially by Bartok). On this CD, we can hear Furtwangler trying to reconcile these two conflicting aspects of his personality. While the Pepping symphony is more accessable than the Hymnisches Konzert, both present formidable challenges to the orchestra, and the listener. The key is that Furtwangler brings is inimitable concept of form and understanding of the piece as a whole that makes these compositions not only accessible, but enjoyable.

These compositions are perhaps not for everyone. Perhaps neither are the performances. But if you want to hear composers (and a conductor) struggling to find the path between Wagner and Schoenberg, this is an interesting place to listen.
