Joyous surprises!.......2006-06-01

Every once in awhile I run across an album that excells, not because of the shining brilliance of one artist, but because of the collective impact of several. Here, in this album, are some little-known gems from Christmas music literature. I was captivated by the lilting and primitive joy in "Jesus, the Light of the World," which I had never heard before. Then there is Chanticleer and its rendition of Charles Ives' "Christmas Carol," a classic too little known. There are others. If you look for unique renditions of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas music to enhance the joy of the season, this album is a must-buy.

The minute I heard Thomas Hampson sing the first few notes of Adeste Fideles, I knew I had to have this album. It is a marvelous compilation of Classical Christmas favorites (excerpts from the Bach, Vivaldi and Corelli Christmas Concertos and The Nutcracker) and standard Christmas favorites, as well as some of the lesser heard Christmas gems.

Originally recorded between 1964 and 1985, this generous 2-CD compilation ranges from carols dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries to timeless, mostly traditional popular favorites. The arrangers include such eminent composers as Vaughan Williams, Gustav and Imogene Holst, Arthur Sullivan, Peter Cornelius, and Felix Mendelssohn, as well as the Choir's own Directors, David Wilcocks and Philip Ledger. The 50 carols are carefully chosen for maximum contrast of tempo, mood and character; the settings, too, endeavor to create variety of texture and dynamics between the often numerous verses by alternately using solos and choruses, male, female and combined voices, creating cumulative build-ups, and adding a descant to the final strophe. However, even all these techniques and devices tend to become predictable, so it may be advisable to enjoy the program in judicious doses. Among these riches, listeners will find their own favorites, but it may be worth noting that "Silent Night" appears twice, once in English and once in German, and that two of the most famous carols--"O come, all ye faithful" and "Hark! The herald angels sing"--are accompanied by a very loud brass band playing fanfares with incongruous, "up-dated" harmonies--the only false note in the program. By contrast, the organ, employed in several introductions, as well as to provide powerful chordal support and all kinds of tinkling, bell-like effects never seems out of style or character. The singing is splendid. Basically "white," without vibrato, the sound has a wonderfully pure, truly celestial quality, but can rise to full, rich, ringing sonorities in the climaxes. Intonation, balance and ensemble are impeccable, the soloists are excellent. The reverberant acoustics of the Chapel of King's College, where the recordings were made, cushion the voices without obscuring the clarity of the lines. --Edith Eisler

I was very disappointed when I listened to CD 1 and realised it was club music.Having now read the other review I don't think I will get satisfaction,therefore I cannot rate this item properly.

CD 1 Wrong Music.......2004-12-21

I put the CD in and was met by club music, I thought maybe it was some strange take on "Morning in the City of David" nope, the CD had been burned with the wrong image. I sent it back and received a new copy, it had the same issue. I listened to the second CD and loved ever moment of it, but until EMI/Amazon can rectify this issue, I cannot fairly rate it.

My favourite christmas songs on one cd!.......2003-07-16

I love Christmas music sung by cathedral choirs. This cd sung by the Westminster Cathedral choir is one of the best. Ian Simcock on the organ is great. The trebles are fantastic, Mark Kennedy does a solo on "Once in royal david's city" and Aaron webber on "in the bleak midwinter". "In dulci jubilo" is sung for unaccompanied choir. Stephen Alder, baritone does a beautifull job on "Three kings" . There is also "Of the fathers love forgotten" one of the great mass hymns. The plainsong melody is in "Piae Cantiones". "Sing lullaby" another tremendous hymn is the last of the three carol anthems of the year 1918-1920 by Herbert Howells. Actually they are all wonderfull. I can't forget to mention "0 come, o come, emmaniel" the advent carol which is the fervent plea to the saviour to come and redeem mankind. This was arranged by James O'Donnel. The spirit is one of quiet assurance and timeless devotion. Which is how he conducts this collection of timeless carols.

Out of all the many 100's of choral cds mentioned in the Penguin and Gramophone CD Guides, there are precisely only two that get both a Penguin rosette and a Gramophone award. Both these CDs are on the Hyperion label (CDA66114 and CDA67017), both are radiantly beautiful, and both are by the same choir - the Westminster Cathedral Choir.

I think this is a very successful performance, which brings out new aspects of the pieces. The point that dismays other reviewers could be that Mr. Hunt doesn't go for virtuoso show-off playing; he uses pastel and soft tones instead of scarlet (that is, heavily rhythmic playing with extreme dynamic contrasts). Most of these pieces have a streak of the late romantic era, so it would be tempting to bring in heavy colouring and lots of pedal. Hunt goes for bringing out the lines of the music and the subtle shifts of kley, and the strategy pays off in Howells' Siciliano and Vaughan Williams preludes.
The Siciliano, to my mind, is the high point of the disc; the slow-moving lines of the music are evoked with precise feeling, and the music spirals to a climax which is so moving because it doesn't pull off a big crescendo. I don't find the tonal colours muted or "distant" here, but they should be heard in contrats with the mellow bass register of the organ.
The "Plymouth Suite" is fine too, with a strong tinge of old English hymn and dance traditions.
The instrument is definitely not some kind of B-3 organ. Most organs these days have part electronic action. So the name "Bradford Computing organ" could mean the company donated money for the organ.
A really good disc with music which is little known outside of Britain.

If there are any redeeming graces to this particular CD, I have a hard time finding them. Less-than-stellar playing and distant sound quality come together in this mediocre recording. A great number of other CD's come to my mind if one is looking for a general recording of English organ literature-and all of them are played on real pipe organs, not the sorry substitute recorded here.

This is the worst CD I own.......2001-03-21

I love English organ music, but not when it is recorded this badly. The performance here is terrible. Hunt adds beats to measures (specifically the opening bars of Vaughan Williams' Hyfrydol prelude) and his playing is generally very sloppy. The instrument is not impressive either. Sounds as thought it may be electronic. This would explain why it is called the Royal Bradford Computing Organ. The recording sounds muffled and distant. I wish Naxos would reissue the repertoire on this disc with a different performer playing a real organ.

Quintessential Choral Music for Christmas.......2002-10-29

This release consists of "Christmas Night" (Collegium 106) and "Christmas with the Cambridge Singers" (Coll 111). If you don't already have these two CDs, purchase this now! John Rutter is without peer as composer, arranger, and conductor of choral music, and these CDs are everything you could want in choral music for the holidays. The Cambridge Singers perform with flawless diction, tonality, and musicianship. The arrangements are rich and bubbly or pristine and elegant but always, always gorgeous. I also recommend "Christmas Day in the Morning" (Coll 123). Rutter's "Gloria" (Coll 100) is also stunning, and that CD includes some great examples of his non-Christmas work. Just listen to any of the Rutter samples you'll find here at Amazon, and I promise, you will be enchanted.
