5 out of 5 stars True masterpiece.......2007-01-11

The Passacaglia of Bach is one of my favorite musical pieces and I really liked to hear five versions of it. Each is completely different and gives different view to this masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars 5 versions of a Bach passacaglia.......1999-11-24

This is a recording of 5 different versions of the same Bach Passacaglia. It's amazing to see how different the same piece can sound on a very old organ, a piano, a romantic piano, a version for 4-hands piano and a version for orchestra. The notes are all the same in all 5, but the interpretations are completely different. I highly recommend this to any Bach fans. It's absolutely fascinating!

    5 out of 5 stars Powerful selections.......2007-01-14

Although there has always been some uproar about transcribing Bach's music, especially his keyboard music to piano, I see the Bach transcriptions as an eloquent homage to the old master. Arrangements and transcriptions have been made for over two hundred years and for the reason that Bach's music will always be effective on other mediums. Busoni and Godowsky were perhaps the greatest transcribers, with Liszt following closely behind. The piano is such a versatile instrument and can please both the Baroque enthusiasts and the Romantic lovers. Only the piano can imitate the fleeting polyphony and yet transform the music with sonorous beauty.

This disc contains a stellar, almost perfect, selection of Bach arrangements. The works featured here are not only played with profundity but also nobility and feeling, characteristics sometimes absent from the automaton pianists out there. Risto Lauriala applies both a fidelity to Bach and an understanding of the Romantic emphasis of these transcriptions. I think Lauriala's Romantic expressive power tends to take control, but this is not a bad thing. Bach's music is not harmed by this; it's instead taken to a new level.

Saint-Saens's arrangement of the overture of BWV 29 is given an excellent treatment with just the right balance between Baroque and Romantic flavoring. The piano colors the ecstatic polyphony quite well. I find this arrangement the safest of them all; it should please Bach and piano fans alike. Siloti's arrangement of the Adagio from BWV 1018 is a melancholy escapade into gorgeous continuous melodies. Lauriala plays with feeling and an unerring stream of contemplation. This is no robotic interpretation but one of human thought. Siloti's transcription of the Chaconne from BWV 1005 is, unfortunately, not as impressive as Busoni's masterful efforts. Musically, though, this music is one of Bach's most inspired creations and perhaps the best on this disc. This is a 16 minute epic work with glorious harmonic variations and endlessly sublime lines of music. Lauriala plays to the best of his ability, but the transcription is frankly inferior to Busoni.

I also prefer Busoni's transcription of the Toccata and Fugue BWV 565 over Reger's here. But Naxos is still to be commended for placing a lesser known arrangement in the spotlight. Don't get me wrong, Reger still makes great drama and technical splendor out of this work. The music is impossible to dislike, and Reger clarifies and carefully embellishes the fugal voices with skill. The two major triumphs of this disc are saved for last, however, with d'Albert's Passacaglia and Kabalevsky's Dorian arrangement. The Passacaglia in C minor is a colossal work of grandiose variations on an awesome bass line. d'Albert's transcription employs more daring than the previous arrangements. Bass doublings and rich harmonies lend to making this piece an imposing pianistic tour-de-force. The last transcription, though, is my favorite. Kabalevsky's efforts with the 'Dorian' Toccata and Fugue are simply monumental. The toccata has all the majesty of Bach and the rhythmic vigor of a wonderful toccata. But the Fugue, with one of those simple but ingenius subjects of Bach, is taken on a Romantically-infused ride that leaves me breathless after each trip. Lauriala showcases his reflective side in the exposition; d'Albert's arrangement is sufficient enough that one can hear the entrance of new voices. But once the fugue has plunged into more episodes and restatements, the main subject is augmented and given increasing organ sonority on the piano. Indeed, the piano takes the throne as the king of instruments here. I don't even think the organ can rival the depth of the piano's lower registers. This is an absolute gem in the Bach piano arrangements and the most unique transcription on this disc.

Bottom line: Bach is simply exalted through the piano. In these transcriptions, his music retains all the natural polyphony and yet it experiences a metamorphosis from the Romantic spirit that manages to express Bach's ideas as never before. Risto Lauriala's playing is distinguished for fusing Romantic passion with the intellectual complexity of Bach. If that wasn't enough, there are two masterpieces of transcriptions that beg my full endorsement: d'Albert's Passacaglia and Kabalevsky's 'Dorian.'

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-06-04

This recording showcases some lesser-known transcriptions of Bach's works, which I feel should become more mainstream. The Siloti transcription of the Chaconne, for example, is sublime, and Reger's treatment of the Tocatta & Fugue in D minor is nothing short of amazing. There have been transcriptionists and arrangers throughout musical history, and it's time that more than just Stokowski and Busoni -- both with tendencies to let their ultra-romantic sensibilities overshadow Bach's Baroque writing -- that these others should be known, and heard. Naxos has once again provided the listening public with an affordable entrance to the more obscure facets of classical music. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars An almost legendary pairing........2006-11-28

How wonderful of DGG to reissue these performances, documented nicely as to what LPs they came from. The singing is astonishing. How many sopranos could range from Oscar (in Ein Maskenball) to Marie in Wozzeck. But Evelyn Lear does so, with some incredibly lovely Lieder singing in between. Morike Lieder are not so often performed as to make this a duplication in many CD catalogues. Stewart's Wotan's Abschied is beautifully felt, with the Berlin Philharmonic in its glory behind him. It cuts off, however, just before the start of the fire music, so we don't get Wotan's last line. Still the level of singing here is outstanding. The duet album offered from another label - Don Giovanni, Aida, etc. - is less impressive because Ms. Lear is forced to singing more heavily (and less pristinely) than usual. Now if only Sony-BMG would reissue the incredible Ives LP on CD again. It was honest, straightforward singing, with no pretension except in one or two "precious" songs. Rather than overkill with too many excerpts, these cover the highlights of two sensational careers. Buyer need not beware. This is world-class singing.

5 out of 5 stars Two great American singers who conquered Europe.......2006-09-27

Now somewhat forgotten except by those with long memories, Evelyn Lear and husband Thomas Stewart achieved greater success in Europe than any other Americans of their generation except Leontyne Price. Stewart was Karajan's Wotan in his recorded Walkure from 1967, and also in Siegfried, while about the same time Lear was Karl bohm's Pamina in Zauberflote. It was unheard of for two Americans to be signed up on the yellow label for DG, but here we have just a sample of their recordings--just in time to commemorate Stewart's recent death at 78.

For me, he's the real star here. His Flying Dutchman soliloquy 'Die frist ist um' is riveting--a good place to start if you don't know how intense and foxused an artist he was (for a while he held the record for repeat appearances at Bayreuth, I believe). The high point for Lear as a solo artist is probably the long stretch devoted to Strauss and Wolf lieder, where her warm, musical style is most evident. Orchestrated lieder by Wolf are a rare commidity, and Stewart performs a batch with incredible intensity. These discs range over a huge range of songs, duets, arias, and scenes, however--too many to summarize.

As for their duet recitals, we get only 3 Stephen Foster songs from an LP that made quite an impression in the Sixties--all beautifuly sung, without a trace of operatic crossover pretension. In that vein we get Dvorak's Moravian duets and ohters from Brahms and Schumann. Devoted as they were to each other, I think Stewart does best on his own, so my recommendation centers chiefly on him.

5 out of 5 stars Five stars for the Raff!.......2005-07-06

Joachim Raff is the Rodney Dangerfield of classical music -- he don't get no respect. But he should! Raff, who was productive in the era from about 1855 to 1880, was considered a titan in his time but was eventually eclipsed by Brahms and Wagner. A master orchestrator and lyricist, with a genius for melody, Raff is the epitome of the Romantic composer -- beautiful works, well-wrought, intended to please. There is no sturm und drang, but he will bring a smile to your face and leave you humming along.

The Ponti/Kapp recording of the Piano Concerto is energetic, appropriately lyrical in the slow movement, rollicking in the heroic finale. Raff was a student of Liszt and the concerto is reminiscent of Liszt's own, but is more melodious and less bombastic (though it has its share of that.) I find Raff to be superior to Liszt in his orchestral works (indeed, Raff, as an employee of Liszt's, orchestrated some of Liszt's tone poems); the Raff concerto is the sort of thing you listen to and say, "Why isn't that performed more often?" Ponti was the pioneer in making sure it was performed, and this recording, albeit a couple of decades old, still has good sound and a vibrant polish undimmed by time (or by Vox's sometime reputation for tinny sound).

If you're bitten by the Raff bug after this, may I suggest a few symphonies to try?: No. 3, Im Walde; No. 5, Lenore, No. 8, Sounds of Spring. Raff is easily the equal of any number of better-known Romantics such as Liszt, Saint Saens, Rimsky-Korsakov, Smetana, and Bruch. His reputation is gradually being restored, and Ponti has done his part.

(Also of interest in the set is the Stavenhagen concerto, written by a virtuoso pianist of Liszt's day. A pleasant bonus!)

5 out of 5 stars A must in your collection.......2004-04-17

Let`s talk about Liszt^s maldition. Ponti creates a dark atmosphere without making fireworks.
In Bronsart`s concerto the piano flies and evokes us a true landscape of caleidoscopic images. It`s played with conviction and majesty. The last movement like many endings of Brahms`works concludes with gipsy tunes. In the romantic tradition, austere and honest.
But Raff`s concert steals the show. What Ponti makes with these concert is melting with the score. The piano is played with such kind of histamina and also passion without loosing the "savoir vivre". It`s a jubilee a celebration of life. Absolutely radiant. And in the finale Ponti makes a statement of elegant bravura and happy resolution. Raff was undoubtly not only a virtuoso but a gentleman drowned by the nature`s love so representative of the pures romantic tradition. In this sense Raff seems anticipate the echoes of Debussy`s preludes. In fact, he was a Liszt`s pupil but creating and suggesting ; and that`s the clue who carries to the musical impressionism. Ponti , in this sense attacks the work having this concept in his mind.
Obviously, Raff is not at Schumann`s level, but that isn`t a sin. Raff altogether Mozart loves the life.
The orchestra an Mr. Ponti, that evening were absolutely convinced and engaged with this concert. The rapport is inusual.
The rest of the CD is worthy and you`ll be rewarded ever.

      4 out of 5 stars Raff-Ponti Rave.......2000-09-20

Other than the Liszt and the Raff, the other concertos on this compilation are mostly of historic interest, ranging in aesthetic value from mediocre to pretty poor--the Mosonyi especially seems to give one an idea of what a composer of limited talent and awareness would produce back in the depths of the 19C.--BUT the Raff Concerto is brilliant-a bit slick, but enormous fun. It is like a Germanic, somewhat finer Saint-Saens 2nd Piano Concerto. Ponti is absolutely scintillating--it is a wonder that he has not been asked to travel round the world concert halls engaging audiences with this highly entertaining concerto. The last movement is particularly irresistible. I would give this set 5 stars if it only contained the Raff and the Liszt!

5 out of 5 stars A FEAST OF FORGOTTEN DELIGHTS!.......1999-09-27

This is, arguably, the best of the entire series of VOX's worthy "The Romantic Piano Concerto" CDs. This set has the strongest "batting order" of any of them, leading off with Joachim Raff's delightful c minor concerto. This work, superbly played by the brilliant Michael Ponti, is a real find. It is a tuneful virtuoso romp, well orchestrated and full of fire works. I'll take this concerto over Grieg's hackneyed a minor any day. As the commercials used to say "but wait, there's more!" The set (devoted to the efforts of Liszt pupils and associates) also has wonderful concerti by Eugene D'Albert, Bernard Stavenhagen, Hans Von Bronsart, Mihaly Mosanyi, as well as Liszt himself (the early Malediction for Piano and Strings). Any piece on these CDs sounds like Beethoven compared to anything by a no talent hack like Elliott Carter! These CDs are highly recommended, especially at this price.
