Haydn with Period Panache!.......2007-04-21
That's how one prominent review tabbed this set! Went on to compare with Dorati's recording of same, and found this one relative equal, but with somewhat faster tempos and period faithfulness.
Having fallen in love with hearing Symphony #38 on radio with its dazziling oboe part, had to have that recording and in the bargain found many more of this 1760ish collection of Haydn's works to equally love.
Especially fond of No. 31 with its superb horn work and double bass, and also the 30th with its addition of trumpets and drums.
For the price brilliant five disc set to enjoy these in Haydn's symphonic cycle.
Worth acquiring at any price.......2007-02-23
Some say Haydn's ingenuity is even greater than that of Mozart's or Beethoven's. When listening to this brilliantly played set, I find myself becoming a convert of the belief. Haydn experimented with a variety of musical tools in these works. Surprising twists and turns are abundant. You will hear chamber serenade, harpsichord run, or violin solo in the most unexpected spots. Instruments are sometimes played in very unconventional ways resulting in exotic sounds - similar to what Berlioz and Mahler did later. Structure is toyed with in many symphonies, especially in the early ones.
In Austro-Hungrarian Orchestra, Adam Fischer finds an all-in chef's toolkit needed to cook these delightful ingredients. The woodwinds not only sing but also coo and meow. Strings melt your heart to a puddle with their exquisite pianissimo. Horns are expressive yet stylish. The whole orchestra knows how to knock themselves out when the music calls for it. The overall timbre is unlike any other orchestra I've ever heard, period or conventional. It's bright, edgy and folksy at the same time. It sounds like a virtuosic chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra except in the big symphonies. I believe the closest thing to their sound is Vienna Philharmonic playing Johann Strauss waltzes. Throw in a hint of gypsy flavor then it would be even closer.
Because this is a massive 33-CD set, there are inevitably a few imperfections. In a handful of spots the strings are not perfectly together. Adding to this, some of the violins have very distinctive tones which don't blend well with others when the music gets energetic. As to the engineering, some of the symphonies recorded early in the cycle are captured with too much reverberation, especially some London symphonies which sound soft-edged. But let me assure you the vast majority of the 100 plus symphonies have been recorded with crystal-clear brilliance.
One may find more sophisticated and smooth playing in some conventional performances (Colin Davis and Jochum) or crisper articulations in some period recordings (Bruggen and Pinnock). But Fischer and his hand-picked orchestra deliver more character and expressiveness than in any Haydn performances I've ever heard. Harnoncourt comes close but Fischer's set has more smiles. And his orchestra has the devilish ability to accommodate any mood Haydn's score throws at them - whether it's charm, wit, panache, or pathos. Their playing in slow movements is simply inimitable.
This set will be the source of joy for many Haydn lovers whether they are beginners just opening up the treasure chest or seasoned collectors with many other Haydn CDs. According to others' opinions, it compares favorably to Dorati's box, the only other complete set which I have not heard.
One final point - I wrote the review without the consideration of the price. In other words, this set is worth acquiring at any price.
Great Haydn .......2005-07-06
A superlative recording of Haydn symphonies. These perfomences are very enjoyable and i highly recommend them
Excellent........2004-03-15
To record the complete Haydn symphony cycle (107 symphonies or so, depending on which reference you choose) is no doubt a daunting task to say the least. Haydn's genius is evident in every one of these works, from the earliest to the experimental middle periods (but they are all experimental in some way), to the late, great works of the '90s. His symphonies not only provide almost endless formal and musical variety - they are an unusually accurate (if the current Hoboken numbering is corrected) documentation of a great composer's steady growth as a composer. This is why boxed sets of symphonies such as this series offered by Fischer and the Esterhazy Orchestra are so important, not only for those who love Haydn in particular, but for those who are interested in the development of the orchestra, the symphonic form, and the history of Western music in general.
As this set follows the incorrect Hoboken numbering system, the set recorded here includes a few of his earliest symphonies written in the late 1750s as well as those written during his "Years of Transition", to use Geiringer's apt term for those works written during the experimental years of the 1760s. These include the early masterpiece, no. 31 in D major, "The Hornsignal", the beautiful no. 21 in A major, the famous no. 22 in the "wisdom" key of E-flat major, "The Philosopher" (the first symphony to my knowledge that uses English Horns), and 2 minor-keyed works (I don't include no. 34 in this category because only the first movement is in d minor), nos. 26 in d minor, "Lamentatione", and no. 39 in g minor. (Incidentally, both of these minor-keyed symphonies had an obvious influence on Mozart - his d-minor fugue for 2 pianos and his "Little" g-minor symphony are the most obvious respective debtors to Haydn's examples here.)
This recording is excellent throughout. The sound is wonderful, the tempi and interpretations are clear, simple, and forceful and the playing is first rate. These sterling qualities are present in each of the symphonies recorded here and the only quibbles I have are merely interpretive. The technical difficulties written for the horn parts are played with absolute aplomb and even the occasional concertmaster and other string solo passages not written in the score (this is a liberty taken by Fischer) usually add to the interest rather than detract. Fischer occasionally prefers grace over fire and the occasional attempts to make the music more charming by using such devices as extremely clipped articulation or sudden (and sometimes nonsensical) volume changes or backing away from a forceful cadence are minor distractions. Overall, the interpretations are very good.
For this price, Nimbus is offering quite a bit of wonderful music that is handsomely packaged and extremely well recorded. The liner notes are succinct, yet informative and I guarantee learning will take place while listening and reading up on this great set of works. I highly recommend this recording.
(By the way, Amazon's advertisement for this set includes 2 works not included in the recording due to a mistake: Symphonies 'A' and 'B' are non-numbered symphonies and are not the names of two symphonies. They were included in Haydn's symphonic cycle after Hoboken (whose numbering system is mostly followed) had died. Symphony 'A' and symphony 'B' are included in this recording. Nos. 45, "The Farewell", and 71, an even later work, are NOT included in this recording.)
the cycle is complete.......2001-11-29
Well it took 14 years, but this 5 disc volume completes the 32 disc collection of Haydn symphonies.
As with the previous volumes this one is fully digital, the technical quality of these discs is excellent.
I have all 8 volumes and have been happy with every one of them.
The sounds of Adam Fischer and the Austro-Hungarian Orchestra are splendid. This group of symphonies (21-39) is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Pinnock - pretty good Haydn, but not the best.......2006-12-08
As I type this review, I am listening to the recording of Symphony #52 from this set.
Earlier today, I listened to these recordings of Symphonies 51 and 43 as well. I have owned many of these recordings since they first came out. In fact, this is the first recording of 43 I had ever heard, but the symphony never grabbed me until I heard a different recording (conducted by Aadland on Imp classics, hard to find). Pinnock races through it and misses a lot of the character and the sense of inevitability that this symphony has to offer. The recording of 51 is better with Derek Solomons, more character in the horn solo slow movement (though I have some reservations about that set as well!).
Overall, it seems that Pinnock just doesn't dig deeply enough into these wonderful symphonies. Yes, they are fast and lively. But there's not enough articulation, oomph, depth to make this the set to own.
My favourite set of symphonies.......2006-08-13
This recording is one of my "desert island discs". I have listened to it over and over again over the last four years and I am still finding new and exciting things in this music. Haydn's symphonies are very important to me and I feel very at home in this music. Why? I am not sure. This is musical music - music which celebrates music. I realise that this doesn't make much sense. Mozart's symphonies are always very clever and always full of Mozart's brilliance and superb sense of style and form. Haydn's symphonies aren't "obvious" - they require a little more effort for someone like me to appreciate, and this is their strength - once this music is appreciated, it stays that way!
Mr. Trevor Pinnock, directing The English Concert [on period instruments] from his harpsichord, provides us with a wide window into these works - 19 symphonies, over 6 CDs. The playing is very attractive and colourful. The wind and brass players are in fine form, particularly the horn players. The strings have that transparency and incisiveness which period violins, violas, 'cellos and basses and original styled bows bring to 18th century music.
I can imagine a different approach and interpretation of some of these works, but I cannot imagine anyone doing it better than Pinnock and his ensemble.
If you're a fan of the "Sturm und Drang" style, although much of this music is far from stressful or stormy!, you will probably enjoy comparing these symphonies with those of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
Unpleasant Recording Spoils Set.......2005-10-13
Note added later: I now urge potential buyers to consider as an alternative the Nimbus set with Fischer, symphonies 40-54. Wonderful performances with recording that goes much further in capturing some of the beauty of a violin - without the disadvantage of earlier harsh digital sound.
Amazon does us all a huge favor by allowing us to voice our thoughts away from the endless commercial shilling of the music industry. Yes, not everybody agrees all the time, but it is not difficult to determine if reviewers hate an artist and just have it in for her or him, or simply find fault with a performance or its engineering. I happen to admire and respect both the conductor of this CD issue and his band.
Since what I heard put me in a minority of one - to judge by those who took the time to read my review - I replayed several sides of this CD again the other day on a friend's far superior system. I should add that together we have over 100 years of listening to recorded sound, and my collection goes back to the 1890's. So we have some fair grasp of this medium. After less than a minute of the first CD, he turned to me, and winced. Moreover we could not find any improvement in the sound on any of the other sides.
As for the other reviewers glorious reviews - be open-minded; trust yourself to take a few minutes and compare Pinnock's band in the opening to Symphony 48, Maria Theresia, to Janigro's group on Bach Guild, ATM-CD-1495. Afterall, it's your money. One performance sounds imperial, and the music sounds most appropriate for an Empress.
Original instruments do sound very nice - as anyone who has heard live one of the better Cremona masterpieces can attest. And those violins were built long before Haydn was even born! Don't believe all "original violins" must sound like they do in this recording.
Again, for a far better sounding CD issue do yourself a huge favor - try the budget priced Bach Guild CD of the Sturm and Drang symphonies conducted by Janigro. Again. ATM-CD-1495. It has a superior performance of the Maria Theresia, #48 in a robust C Major.
And just to be fair - Janigro's recording of the Boyce symphonies is disappointing, whereas Pinnock's is excellent. Perhaps there is something to leading in music of your own culture.
The absolute best set of the Sturm and Drang symphonies you will ever find.......2005-08-18
I didn't buy this boxed set, but aquired these wonderful discs one by one. I love the whole set, but I bought the one with symphonies 35,38,39,59 first. It is my favorite of the six. That one is really one of those desert island discs. There is such a rhythmic drive and electricity in volume one that I hardly ever hear in classical music. If you're kind of feeling down, these symphonies by the English Concert, will definitely bring you out of the doldrums. Volumes 2-6 are equally as well played, but I personally enjoy Volume one better. Trevor Pinnock is superb as usual. He's definitely one of the greatest conductors of the baroque and classical periods. I would like to see him venture into the romantic period to see how good he would do with that style. The sound quality of this set is just superb. Everything sounds crystal clear in these recordings. If you don't like these performances, check your pulse because I think your dead.
Lively and energetic Haydn - many "surprise" gems here.......2005-03-12
I find myself turning to this modest box of 6 CDs containing 19 mostly little-known Haydn symphonies far more often than to any other Haydn symphony recordings on my shelf.
The complete cycles I own are certainly great achievements that I would never want to be without. Dorati's magnificent complete cycle (see Amazon asin # B0000042DP) is a classic that has stood the test of time. Brilliant classics has ressurected the Adam Fischer cycle from the Nimbus bankruptcy (see Amazon asin # B00006GA50), though the price is now much higher than it was when Brilliant Classics originally released it in 2002. For some of the more famous symphonies, like the London Symphonies, there are many stellar paerformances, such as the Colin Davis/Concertgebouw recordings available on 2 Philips Duo offerings.
But none of the above, or other unspecified recordings, hold a candle to these Pinnock recordings when it comes to an all around enjoyable musical experience. The Minuets have a swaggering quality that is intoxicating. You'd think Haydn invented dance music. Who needs the Strauss family? The Allegros have vitality about them that brings you to the edge of your seat. And the slower movements have phenomenal penetrating depth and wide ranging dynamics one would never expect from Haydn.
And unlike some critics, I don't think there is anything "unfaithful" to the score about these readings. Pinnock doesn't resort to Stokowski-like modifications or liberalities to make the music come alive. What does come across is that all of the musicians appear to be having fun. And when musicians are having fun like this, you do too.
And for the bargain basement price, this a must have.
Not a Haydn fan? Get this set and you will be.

Authoritative.......2003-09-02
These wonderful recordings of the Haydn symphonies are a testament to the value of using authentic instruments in the performance of music of the classical era--provided they are played by virtuosi directed by an inspired leader, as here. The texture is clearer, the rhythmic momentum greater, and the tonal color more pleasing than was ever possible on 19th century-style instruments. I think Haydn himself would have been awed by these recordings had he been able to hear them.
Be sure to snap up the Hogwood/AAM recordings while you can, by buying used or perhaps on German Amazon. Hogwood and his band have been treated shabbily by their recording company, which has discontinued the albums almost as soon as they were released. Indeed, the future of the series is apparently in doubt--a huge shame; after all, Haydn got better with age, and the missing five volumes promise to be the very best. Let's hope the AAM can find a way...

Exploring the Haydn Symphonies -- Nos. 26,35,and 49.......2004-09-20
In spite of the disparity in their numberings, Haydn composed each of the three symphonies on this CD in 1767 and 1768. Two of the symphonies, nos. 26 and 49, are examples of Haydn's "Sturm und Drang" (storm and stress) period. They both were written, apparently, as religious "passion" music in celebration of Easter. The two symphonies are full of emotion and tragedy and are among Haydn's earliest compositions in the minor key. These two symphonies show well how Haydn was able to take and use the old, even archaic, forms he had inherited even while transforming them with his own creativity. The third symphony on the cd, no. 35, is a lighter, more gallant work.
The symphony no. 26 in D minor, "Lamentation", is in three movements. Karl Geiringer's "Haydn: A Creative Life in Music" observed that "[f]rom the stirring syncopation of the beginning to the passionate lament of the minuet, this work strikes a note of suffering and despair." (p.238) The opening allegro begins with a stern tragic theme followed by a quiet, speaking theme in the major. It features solos in the oboe. The second movement, andante, is quietly meditative. Again, the lead is given to the oboe and other winds. The oboe first sings out over a walking theme in the lower strings and then is counterpointed against a separate theme in triplets in the violins. The movement increases in solemnity and stateliness as it progresses. The final movement is a minor key minuet in the strings with a brief trio in the major in which the strings answer the winds. The work comes to a quiet end. This work is stylistically early, but Haydn infuses it with meaning.
The symphony no 49 in F minor is known as "La Passione" This work too is written in a style old in Haydn's time. The first and third movements are slow and the second and fourth movements are fast. The work strikes me as something Gluck might have composed if he had been a symphonist, with its angular, directed themes. Geringer writes of this symphony that "[t]his work displays, particularly in its second movement in F minor, a feverish fierceness of expression that few musical or poetical works of the eighteenth century surpassed." ("Haydn, A Creative Life in Music, p. 239)
The opening minor key adagio is in the form of an overture in which the tension slowly builds and develops throughout. The tension finds release in the second movement, allegro di molto, also unremittingly in the minor, which is stormy and passionate throughout. It features large falling intervals in fifths and octaves. The third movement is a slow minuet with a stately, walking theme. The finale, presto, hearks back to the second movement with is swirling intense themes. As did the second movement, it uses wide skips in intervals, in this case ascending octaves. This is a work in the ancient form of a church sonata which Haydn fills with passion and fury.
The third work on this CD, the symphony no. 35 in B flat major is a lovely flowing work with little of the storms of its companions. The opening allegro di molto begins with a flowing theme in the strings with accompanying passages for the horn. The horn figures preemininently in the development as well, and in the recapitulation it is featured in passages at the upper limits of its register. The second movement is a flowing andante for the strings. Listeners sometimes overlook how lovely Haydn's slow movements can be. This movement reminds me in its gracefullness of a slow movement from a Mozart piano concerto. The minuet has large passages for winds contrasting with the strings. The trio is in triplets for strings alone, and is based on the minuet proper, at a quicker pace. The finale is a quick, lively celebratory movement for a lyrical and accessible early symphony.
This disk is part of a compilation of Haydn's entire 104 symphonies on the budget-priced Naxos label. The Naxos series uses a variety of conductors and orchestras. The performances here are by Nicholas Ward and the Northern Chamber Orchestra. The performances are done with passion and brio. The CD is an excellent introduction to the early Haydn.
Great Music, Not Just A Way To Fill-In Your Haydn Collection.......2003-07-07
When I first got into classical music, purchasing all 104 symphonies by Haydn seemed like a monumental, if not impossible task. I simply couldn't afford something as grand as the Dorati Complete Haydn Symphonies Box Set (though one of these days it will be mine!). With so many choices available for the "Paris" Symphonies up through the "London" Symphonies, I have had a great time purchasing and comparing interpretations by various conductors - Bernstein, Szell, Davis, Beecham, Jochum, Furtwangler, Klemperer, Kempe, Karajan and Ansermet among others. However, if you are looking for Haydn pre-Symphony No. 82, your choices diminish drastically.
While I have generally steered away from Naxos when it comes to the standard repertoire (I just enjoy the "great" conductors and performers of the century too much), the label has never let me down when trying to get recordings of more obscure works. I am now the proud owner of nearly a dozen Haydn Naxos Symphony CDs, including this title, Volume 6 of Symphonies 26, 35 and 49 with Ward and the Northern C.O. While they are different symphonies from the "great" conductor accounts I mentioned above, in terms of overall quality and sound, the performances are completely on par, well at least to my intermediate-level listening ear. At this rate, I may continue backwards with Haydn's Symphonies on Naxos until I reach el numero uno. And another nice thing is that with Naxos that might even be an affordable undertaking.

First rate.......2005-03-15
More praise for these performances you will find if you search Kuijken Haydn on Amazon, and I can only add: Go for it! This bargain box is a collection of Kuijken's interpretations of 14 of Haydn's symphonies: three earlier symphonies, then the six Paris symphonies, finally the five symphonies between the Paris and London sets. I wait eagerly for BMG/Deutsche Harmonia Mundi to reissue Kuijken's London set. Price does not matter, as far as I am concerned, nothing compares to Kuijken's direction. But the price is ridiculously low, so go for it!
My taste on Haydn? Before I have the 12 London symphonies with Eugen Jochum, good, spirited, although Jochum's forces are too heavy; his is a Haydn looking forward to the romantic era, a charming mix of Enlightenment and Romanticism.
PS: August 2006: If you search Amazon B000EBDCUA you will find the London symphonies to a nice price. Great!

Customer Reviews:
Pretty Damn Good.......2004-07-06
I received as a gift the box set of all four Hooked On Classics CD's. As an avid fan of classical music, I was quite shocked to hear DRUMS in the background! I didn't really know what the Hooked On Classics series was, so I didn't know what to expect. As such, I eventually got used to the percussion, and found that I liked the fourth CD the best of all of them. The drums are more tolerable, and the recording quality is much improved over the other volumes. The playing is superb; on par with any legitimate recording made by any professional orchestra. The selections are diverse, and the arrangements are refreshing. HOC 4 was my link to many of the full-length versions of the excerpts featured, and I especially like the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, and 8th tracks (the 8th track is simply an extended version of the 1st, which makes it a much better rendition). The harpsichord playing in the 7th track is outstanding, as are the arrangements for this track. The climax will give you chills. All in all, an excellent album. I give it four stars only because as a die-hard purist, I don't suppose Bach and Vivaldi and Scarlatti would be too happy if they were to hear percussion along with their music. It would be interesting to see what the tracks would sound like without this.
Great CD, specially the adagio........2004-01-28
I love this CD in particular, because it introduced me to various greatest hits of baroque. I used it to practice my music as a teenager. I recommed this to you, specially if you have kids, because the drum sounds, make it easier to listen to the new generations. I loved the Pachelbel, and the adagio part is Super Excellent.
It's No Louis Clark & the Royal Philharmonic... But it's ok.......2003-12-07
Back in 81 when I got the original Hooked on Classics record as a gift (which I still have), I discovered the beauty and power of classical music in a different way. Now, classical music makes up 1/3 of my music library because of that compilation of classics (thanks to Louis Clark and the Royal Philharmonic).
So would I say this volume 4 has the same effect? I'd answer no, but I did like tracks 2 & 7.
No So Great.......2003-10-29
Once again another pathetic attempt at recreating what Louis Clark did with the original Hooked on the Classics. He succeeded by getting many of us hooked to the classics...something this album probably can't and won't do.
