a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-04
Every piece that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791)wrote bears the mark of the unique genius that caused Haydn to say to Leopold:"I delcare to you upon my honor that I consider your son the greatest composer I have ever heard."
Mozart's sixteen completed Mass settings all date from before 1781, the year in which he quit his native Salzburg to try his luck as a freelance composer in Vienna. While it is true that little sacred music dates from the time of Mozart's greatest maturity, the best work of his teens and early twenties show him deploying his easy skills in counterpoint and fluid vocal melody to produce music of elegance and charm, which, while not greatly radical, nevertheless married his strengths successfully to the accepted Austrian church idiom of the day.
Since the city of Salzburg had a long tradition of church music, generally with a brass-heavy orchestral accompaniment, Mozart retained this sound in his Masses, with their trumpets and trombones, and in the case of the 'Coronation' Mass, horns as well.
Mozart's earliest Mass, the so-called 'Waisenhaus-Messe', was not in fact composed for Salzburg but for Vienna intended for the dedication of a new orphanage church.
The 'Missa Trinitas' was composed five years later in Salzburg for the Feast of the Holy Trinity in June 1773.
When Mozart wrote the C major 'Credo' Mass in November, 1776, it was in a lively and cheerful vein and quickly became very popular thruout the Salzburg region.
The two Masses K317 and K337, both again in C major, were written for the Easter celebrations of 1779 and 1790, respectively, and they show a rising maturity. The K317 'Coronation' Mass was performed in Vienna during the celebrations for the coronation of Emperor Leopold in 1790.
Whenever I see the name Stephen Cleobury and the Choir of KIng's College, I know I've got a quality production!..And this is no exception. The wonderful tuneful voices of the boy sopranos and male altos add so much to the sound of Mozart as well as any other early composer, The soloists, however, were brought in for this disc, and are not members of the choir. They are: Margaret Marshal(soprano)-Ann Murray (contralto)-Rogers Covey-Crump (tenor)-David Wilson-Johnson (bass)-Suzanne Mentzer (soprano)-Bernadette di Nissa (contralto)-Neil Mackie (tenor) and Stephen Roberts (bass). THERE WERE NO COUNTERTENORS SINGING SOLO PARTS.
Two very finely performed recordings.
I needed this for K139.......2006-11-10
I needed this recording for K139 only as our chorus was preparing for a performance and solo auditions were pending. I was interested in the alto solos and was a bit dismayed that the first few were done by a countertenor.
However, it was a good quality recording for the price and was helpful in learning my part for the choral sections as well.
Young, bright voices effectively sing Mozart.......2006-02-24
The King's College choir is composed of mostly young, brightly toned voices, which make for a crisp, clean sound on this recording. Therefore, it is excellent for use as either a rehearsal aid when performing any of these Masses, or purely for listening enjoyment. Good, clean recording.
Explicitly Wonderful!.......2004-07-14
I have had the great privelage of writing several other Mozart related reviews, and I was absolutely belated with this wonderful CD. This CD will offer a very detailed and clear performance of the 5 masses presented. It has been said that Mozart wrote the bulk of his sacred music with "a deep, childlike and unquestioning faith." His masses are astounding in practically every aspect. This was an overall satisfying CD.

Top-notch.......2005-11-12
A wonderful recording. This twosome is now available as a bargain two-fer, and the new transfer helps these older recordings immensely. I have always loved Karajan's interpretations of Beethoven's later works (as another reviewer said). His 9th's, the three I have heard (1962, 1977, 1984) are all excellent, but the 1962 version is the best of that bunch. Similarly with the Missa Solemnis, between this release and his later digital (1985) effort for DG, this (1966) version features an all-star quartet as well as the BPO at its performing peak. I cannot recommend these recordings strongly enough. And the "Coronation" Mass is fabulous too! Listen to his rendition of the 'Credo', simply wonderful!
This is my choice for this recording. The only real competition I see for the Missa Solemnis is the Solti/Berlin performance from 1992, which features better sound and faster pacing, but a similar overall "Beethovenian" feel.
Karajan's Missa Solemnis times five.......2005-10-09
Karajan made a specialty of this great and difficult work, which he recorded no less than five times. I don't believe in duplicating reviews here at Amazon, but I am posting this one under each performance--they range from a live radio broadcast in 1959 from the Salzburg Festival to a digital recording from 1985 in Berlin. In general the sound improves as time goes on, and except for the last recording, the soloists are uniformaly world class.
Since Karajan's readings rank among the best ever made, I'd like to give a brief rundown of each:
1959 Salzburg (EMI): In many ways this is the dream recording. The orchestra is the Vienna Phil, the chorus the Vienna Singverein, Karajan's favorite--they appear in all his recordings. The solo quartet captures Leontyne Price in her prime--her glorious soprano is incomparable in this part. Christa Ludwig, Nicolai Gedda, and Nicola Zaccaria join Price in a passionate, involved performance that brings more excitement and commitment than any other. The big downside is the tubby mono sound--you are aware of listening to a gigantic work through your home radio. If you can adjust your ears and listen through the sound, as it were, this was obviously a great event.
1960 Philharmonia (Testament): This EMI commercial recording came out originally in mono, only later in muffled stereo. It's been cleaned up by Testament for reissue, but the chorus is still fairly murky and distant. Otherwise, this is a deeply satisfying performance, the second best of the five in my opinion. The solo quartet is marked by actually singing, not shouting, and the four voices blend beautifully, which only makes sense, because Schwarzkopf, Ludwig, and Gedda had sung together for years on EMI. They would go on to make a superlative Verdi Requiem under Giulini. The bass again is Nicola Zaccaria, another old hand at EMI but not quite up to the other three. Karajan's conducting lacks the fiery intensity of the live Salzburg performance from the year before. Eerything is relative, though. This is still a strong entry, commanding in every way.
1966 Berlin (DG): From here to the end all recordings are with the Berlin Phil. This one came out nose to nose with the famed Klemperer set from London (EMI), and on the whole Klemperer is superior, thanks to somewhat clearer sound and an unsurpassed chorus trained by Wilhelm Pitz. Karajan's quartet is once again stellar: Gundula Janowitz, Christa Ludwig, Fritz Wunderlich, and Walter Berry. Wunderlich was the greatest lyric tenor in Germany and sounds wonderful. I don't care for Janowitz's piping, hooty soprano, which sounds more like a woodwind instrument than a fully expressive voice, but I concede that I am in the minority. The sonics are a bit glaring, and they get ocngested in the massed passages with chorus and orchestra. DG may have improved the sound in the 1996 reissue on a bargain two-fer; I haven't heard it, although there's no doubt this recording is at times uncomfortably shrill.
1975 Berlin (EMI): Karajan has proceeded with at least one new Missa Solemnis per decade. This recording features another stellar quartet, with Janowitz held over from the DG set and sounding excactly the same. She is joined by Peter Schreier, Agnes Baltsa, and Jose Van Dam. All except Schreier were Karajan favorites at the time. They sing very well, even though one hears a noticeable drop from the earlier quartets. The recorded sound here is just as congested in tuttis as on the DG set. In general the performance shows no advance on earlier readings and in my opinion is the most negligible of the five.
1985 Berlin (DG) : For the first time one notices a leap forward in sound quality, thanks to digital multi-miking. From the outset there's more orchestral detail, cleaner separation of voices, and good highlighting of the vocal quartet. The engineers weren't stuck with a single microphone placement, which never could capture chorus, orchestra, and soloists satisfactorily. Unfortunately, when the big tuttis come in the Gloria, the chorus and orchestra become just as congested as before. This is due to Karajan's insistence on using a very large chorus; it always muddies when the music gets very loud. Over the years Karajan didn't drastically change his approach to the Missa Solemnis, and since this 1985 recording has the best sound, one wishes it could be recommended as the best document. It is badly let down, however, by the quartet, consisting of two unknown women--Lella Cuberli and Trudeliese Schmidt--who aren't exactly great discoveries, along with the light-voiced tenor Vinson Cole and a dry, aging Jose Van Dam.
With enough time and space, one could detail hundreds of differences between these performances. In 1985, for example, the Gloria shoots out at rocket speed compared to the other four performances. But this way madness lies. For me it's enough to know that all but the 1985 are great performances, the sound is about even between 1966 and 1975, with 1960 in serviceable stereo, while the live 1959 Salzburg must be counted one of those events that no one will ever forget who was fortunate enough to be present.
An Absolute Mess!.......2005-05-19
I remember listening to this recording at 14 and understanding even then that this was absolutely one of the worst performances of any work I've heard! Now, 11 years later, I still lament the fact that I learned this work primarily through this recording (and the Davis/LSO recording, not much better). At that point, because of this I thought performances of this work were SUPPOSED to be a bunch of people screaming at the top of their lungs and a big jumble of instruments not being played together correctly in time. Then when I was old enough to be able to read the score I realized that this recording was a disaster in so many ways, as it still sticks out in my mind today.
Sometimes I still think about this recording and laugh. I have once or twice entertained the notion of buying this recording just so I could scoff at it, and to gain a better apprecation for the truly great recordings that are out there (GARDINER, Solti/Berlin, Toscanini)
Didn't any of you notice that the orchestra and the chorus are rarely able to play together? They seem to be playing on two different planets... and it just ends up sounding like a murky, muddied mess. What happened with getting it all together at the "Et resurrexit/Et ascendit?" Or what about the Quoniam? It seems Karajan overlooked the "Allegro" in "Allegro Maestoso," and just trudged along with sick sounding tenors and violins that can't outdo each other enough in allargando. As it is, there isn't one time in the whole piece where Karajan keeps a steady tempo.
And the tone of the chorus -- ah, the chorus! How truly irritating! When I first heard "Qui sedes ad dexteram patris," I went straightway to an encyclopedia to check if there had been any casualties -- It truly sounded as if the concert hall had collapsed!
I guess this was the style back in Karajan's day in the early 60's, and I'm utterly thankful that I didn't have to live through those times. Now, I fully realize that there were many great conductors doing wonderful things during that period. I'm a large fan of Fruhbeck de Burgos, as I have worked with him many times, as well as a great admirer of Solti, Levine and Boulez. I guess that as a Generation Xer (or whatever we twentysomethings are called nowadays), what we envision when we think of the 50's and 60's is the demigod Karajan, and all his big, over-the-top glory. Frankly, I have never had any use for his conducting... I don't understand it. I don't understand the big "conductor" pretenses -- the serious facial expressions, the grandiose tempi and the use of heavy orchestral sonorities that charcaterize him. I guess I belong to a generation of musicians that was taught that the composer has already incorporated the correct interpretation into the score, and that a clear and precise reading by conductor and musicians draws that out, not that the conductor comes to the score with all his crazy "interpretive" ideas and plays it in a way that might have been fashionable for 1960's Europe, but is more likely nothing the composer would even recognize as his own work. (Not to jab at Beethoven's obvious auditory impairment)
I have been spoiled for the last 10 years by the wonderful recording done by John Eliot Gardiner and his forces! I can't help but be devoted to this recording. The period instruments movement has been the movement of my generation, and I believe it can arguably be considered one of the most successful movements in modern music history. Thank goodness there are folks like John Eliot Gardiner, Trevor Pinnock and Marc Minkowski on that bandwagon, because if left in the wrong hands, I realize it had the potential to fail miserably. We all owe John Eliot Gardiner a debt of gratitude for his superb, enlightened performances, especially of Bach, Handel and Beethoven, but even of Holst and Kurt Weill!
As for you, Karajan, you were an enigmatic man... one that I admittedly will never understand. But now you've gone on and we have your baffling recordings to remember you by. They may be unfathomable, but they sure keep me thankful for the strides we've made in performance today!
Oh yes, I almost forgot... the only thing that saves this recording is the late Fritz Wunderlich; no other like him, really!
The Mount Everest of Missas Solemnis.......2003-02-09
Testament to the extraordinary level of achievement the long
tenure of Karajan in Berlin built up. And the 4 soloists are
simply sublime. Janowitz' shimmering soprano irradiates
spirituality, the so lamented Wunderlich shows why he is
considered irreplacible, and the couple Berry/Ludwig are at
their reliable best.

Customer Reviews:
Little known delights.......2003-12-07
This set is an adventure providing many wonderful discoveries. The C minor Mass K.427, the Coronation Mass, the Spatzenmesse, the Credomesse, the Vesperae solennes de confessore K.339, the Litanies Lauretanae and "de venerabili altaris sacramento", the Kyrie K.341--these are all vintage Mozart. The only disappointment is the Requiem, which lacks the clarity and intensity of Hogwood's.
Excellent recordings, maybe a bit much for some..........2001-02-12
I found the overall quality of the recordings and the artists to be consistently very good. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this collection based on the quality of the production--this is a great way to get a complete collection of Mozart's chorals at one shot.
Having said that, it's obviously going to be a bit repetitive; it is overkill for the average listener. Unless you're certain you really want the complete collection, buying a few individual recordings will be more cost-effective. I don't regret the purchase, but I think it all depends on your level of interest.
Music to pray by.......2000-11-09
I'm a non-musician, but have listened to a lot of Mozart. I was cataloging books at my library and popped this in, the first two CD's brought me to tears. I can picture myself praying in a gothic cathedral while listening to this. Oh that "church music" of today could even try to emulate the beauty.
full of discoveries.......2000-06-24
First, let me make it clear that I didn't buy the whole set. The price and the volume is a bit intimidating, to say the least, and the sheer ubiquity of Harnoncourt recordings these days tends to breed a certain resistance in me. Therefore this review is based on the three discs I own (8, 9 and 10) - I'm withholding a star based on ignorance, not criticism. That said, I found the recordings delightful and more than once a pleasant surprise. The Masses can sound somewhat repetitive at times, but for me the real discovery was the many small and fragmentary pieces, which one doesn't come across often in other recordings. The Kyrie K.89 is a haunting vocal canon, so unlike a Mozart; the Miserere K.85, dark, powerful, with just a hint of Allegri; Kyrie K.322 and 323 little gems. The singing is clear and forceful. Contrary to the Amazon review above, I didn't find the baroque instrumentation to be a problem. I don't know if it's a good idea to buy the complete set (Amazon doesn't offer them individually, I think), but it's certainly a lot of CDs for the money -.- , and one thing I can say for sure is that there are bound to be similar discoveries for everyone.

Amazon.com essential recording
American-born soprano Barbara Bonney provides the sparkle in this ebullient account of Mozart's gem of a cantata, Exsultate jubilate (K. 165). Harnoncourt and his charges do a lovely job with the orchestral pages of the setting, originally written to accompany the singing of the castrato Venanzio Rauzzini. Equally well done is the youthful C Minor Missa solemnis (K. 139), which in many ways looks forward to the great C Minor Mass (K. 427) and to the operas of Mozart's mature years in Vienna. --Ted Libbey

Overall good but one problem.......2006-05-24
You can tell the music is well performed and there is the sense of passion from the performers. No complaints in that aspect. The problem is these do not sound like CDs. They sound like tape re-recorded to CD. Those that remember the underlying static that was on almost all cassette tapes. That is on these CDs. And as you turn the music up to fully enjoy it the distrubance comes through even more. I have tried these on 3 different systems, and all have the same results.
Going to try to clean it up by converting to MP3 and back again. I know you lose some quality but it may make the overall enjoyment better.
Please don't get me wrong, the performance on these CD's is exceptional. And it is truley a shame that there is this issue. If you have a way to cancel noise then by all means this should be a good buy. If you play it softly then you will not notice noise on the recording. At the price I am not upset at this but I am a bit disappointed at it.
100 MASTER pieces..........2006-01-31
I am so impressed and moved by the music, the selection, the quality of the recordings. An incredible collection at an unbelievable price. I can not imagine a better overall set of this magnitude and quality. If you need Mozart, want to know Mozart, have never listened to Mozart, you need this set. Happy 250th!

Distant recording for historical reasons.......2005-01-01
Peter Neumann’s 1988 recording for EMI Electrola, made at the “Deutschlandfunk” (the old West German national radio station) in Cologne, seems to be an attempt to re-create the original performance of the “Coronation Mass” at Salzburg Cathedral during the Easter celebrations of 1779. The Collegium Cartusianum (boasting a number of well-known musicians from the Cologne-Basel early music axis) does entirely without violas as is thought to have been the case at Salzburg in Mozart’s time, and the instrumental forces are reduced to five each of first and second violins, two cellos and one double bass (plus the usual pairs of bassoons, trumpets and horns and three trombones, timpani and organ). As historical research has proved fairly conclusively that the singers and instrumentalists were placed in four different galleries of the cathedral, the recording engineers have moved the microphones well away from the participants, which does, as the liner notes assert, yield a very blended sound, but I must add that this is at the expense of clarity: alto and bass soloists Ulla Groenewald and Franz-Josef Selig can barely be heard at all, and the whole impression of listening at some distance is unusual and a little disconcerting. Having said that, the performance is very good indeed, and there are some delightful passages in the winds and a lovely “Agnus Dei” with Patrizia Kwella in fine form. The main emphasis is, of course, on the choir, but unfortunately the liner notes offer no information whatsoever concerning the Kölner Kammerchor (Cologne Chamber Choir), although from listening it seems obvious that it is a comparatively small choir with female sopranos. The “Missa Solemnis”, composed a year later than the “Coronation Mass” (the name of which appears to have originated from its use by Antonio Salieri at the coronation of the Emperor in Vienna some years later), is mainly a choral affair and is subject to the same concept in the performance given here.
I was able to compare and contrast the “Coronation Mass” with the recording made of the same piece two years later by Christopher Hogwood for Decca’s now-defunct early music label L’Oiseau-Lyre. Hogwood uses larger instrumental forces in the strings (seven each of first and second violins, five violas, four celli, three double basses) and a larger choir, in which he uses boy trebles instead of female sopranos (the Winchester College Quiristers join with Winchester Cathedral Choir). The sound is fuller and recorded with more transparency and directness; the soloists (and here particularly the heavenly Emma Kirkby) are placed more in the foreground and can be heard much more distinctly. The fullness of sound may not be quite so strictly authentic as on the Neumann production, but it produces more excitement in the choral and orchestral passages and allows one to hear and enjoy the singing somewhat better than the EMI recording which sounds, in the end, rather like one would expect a radio broadcast to sound. Hogwood has also chosen a different “Epistle Sonata” to follow the Gloria, and his tempi are, as one might expect, a little different from Neumann’s, although the variations are not really significant.
In the end, I would say that although the Neumann/EMI is a good period-performance recording, it cannot really match the superiority of the Decca recording combined with Christopher Hogwood’s superb choral forces. Emma Kirkby as soprano soloist is also unbeatable; the other soloists are about equal on both recordings, but Neumann’s sound concept gives the Hogwood CD the advantage. The Hogwood/Decca recording is complemented by the Vesperae Solennes de Confessore K. 339, a delightful setting of five psalms and the Magnificat.

Mediocre.......2000-08-11
The greatest Masses of Mozart are included in this cd set. I bought this with a lot of doubts about the skill of the conductor and I was right: THIS PERFORMANCE IS LACKING IN FEELINGS, is cold. Peter Neumann doesn't know that Mozart's music is full of "breaths" and a good phrasing is fundamental. He has a good cast of soloists at his disposal; on the contrary the choir is a little bungling (it's difficult to distingush one part from an other).
Indispensable.
