5 out of 5 stars The picture.......2006-12-11

I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

4 out of 5 stars Brandon's Review.......2004-02-09

I am a trumpet player who has studied under the tutalage of Bernie Nero principle trumpet of the Austin Symphony and am also a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, therefore I feel that I am in a unique position to coment on the quality of this recording. Although the music assembled for the recording is an excellent combination of contrasting styles, the musical prhasing is not played charicteristically correct for that time period of music, and stylistically lacks cohesivness. None the less it is still a very good recording, that is why I give it a four rating.

5 out of 5 stars Consistent excellence.......2002-05-20

The Canadian Brass never disappoints. There are some great arrangements of Baroque classics on this album. It may be hard to imagine an organ piece like Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor played by a brass quartet, but it actually works. Overall, this album is consistent in delivering great music.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with the Canadian Brass.......1999-12-06

You really can't go wrong with any CD by the Canadian Brass; they're such an outstanding group. Because of this, it can oftentimes be difficult to choose which of their CDs to purchase. However, if you are looking for a Canadian Brass CD focused around the more classical aspect of music, "Go For Boroque!" is an excellent choice. Compared to the other CB baroque CD, I feel this one is the better. It has a lot more tracks, and the songs, in my opinion, are better. It has everything from my personal favorite, "We Hasten with Eager Footsteps," to "Trumpet Voluntary," to "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," which is more closely associated with "Phantom of the Opera." I highly recommend this recording.

Product Description

This album takes the listener on a musical excursion through the history of the famous Regiment-, Division- and Panzerkorps- "Grossdeutschland", presenting military marches and soldier's songs in a compilation that chronicles this elite German military unit's evolution from the "Wachtruppe" - the army guard detachment stationed in Berlin during the Weimar Republic - to the mighty combined arms force of the late war years. Brandenburg Historica has searched the globe to assemble the priceless 78rpm records (dating from 1928 to 1943) that at we have transcribed for this compilation. Eighteen of this album's TWENTY tracks feature marches and soldiers' songs that are performed by the unit's own choruses and/or bands, while the remaining selections highlight central aspects of Grossdeutschland's unit history and wartime career. These rare source recordings have been restored for maximum fidelity while preserving their unique period ambience. Included in this collection are not only "Grossdeutschland's" official parade march and its presentation march (performed in a rarely heard "honor guard" arrangement with the German national anthem), but also a rare transcription of "Grossdeutsche Grenadiere", the regimental song of GD that features music by GD Obergefreiter Hans-Martin Majewski and lyrics by Infantry Regiment Grossdeutschland's commander in the French Campaign, Oberst Gerhard Graf von Schwerin. Also presented is a selection of the parade marches and songs of the German mechanized forces of the Second World War (including a rare vocal version of the much requested "Panzerlied"), as well as those traditional marches played during guard changing ceremonies and parades in which the "Grossdeutschland" units were regular participants. Painstakingly researched and produced, the album is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated twenty four-page booklet that presents a detailed overview of "Grossdeutschland's" career, the history of its two bands and detailed background information on the featured musical selections.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GD CD.......2007-07-09

This CD is excellent and well worth the price, the sound quality is first class and includes rare music that you probably will not hear elsewhere.
There is also a very detailed history of the Division included with the CD, something that goes beyond the expected. Purchasers will have no regrets when buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Groß Deutschland music........2007-07-06

As an re-enactor I like to know as much as possible about the people I re-enact. In my case Groß Deutschland 1 Co. 1e zug, in Holland. That's also the reason why I purchased this CD. German army was know to be a foot-soldiers army and marching with songs and music was common. This CD contains the music of GD's own marching band and it sounds as good as it should be. There is also a piece in wich the "wachregiment" is givven verbal orders and continues marching on the bands music. Also the "Panzerlied" "Erica" and "Westerwald is sung on this CD wich gave me the oppertunety to learn the lyrics on music, so our "troop" can also sing them when on the march. Fot what it's worth, I like the CD because the music is very recognizeble for the period of time and is very well played by the GD band.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation.......2006-06-26

The twenty tracks on this CD are relevant not only to GD, but to German military music in general, with many well known pieces. Sound quality is excellent, better than I had expected from this kind of archival material. The accompanying liner notes booklet is unusually comprehensive and provides both a brief history of GD and of the various musical selections. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Grossdeutschland CD Is well worth the money.......2006-06-02

Vary well reserched bookle, with a lot of good details, excelent sound quality!!

Philip Jones brass ensemble shows you musicality on a high level. The feelings they are playing with are suberb...music is feelings, not technical.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing better than this!.......2006-07-11

There are many brass recordings available today with ensembles which are even technically more advanced, but nothing can compare with Philip Jones, because the PJBE is not only pure precision playing, it's musicality too and it's smart arranging. Jones understands how to use the characteristics of each instrument. He lets room for Tuba or Horn too, its not just Trumpet always playing the big parts like Empire Brass does.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome Back PJBE.......2001-10-19

It is ironic that London/Decca waited until many of the important members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble were dead before finally releasing this collection of highlights from the ensemble's considerable catalog. Don't misunderstand me! I am thankful for this substantial 2 cd set. For fans of the PJBE there is real cause for celebration; and for those who are just discovering the work of this important brass ensemble, you are in for a treat.

The remastering is first rate and you can't beat the 2-fer pricing. Get this set while its available because the wait for more will at best be a long one. Thankfully, I still have most of the PJBE recordings on vinyl and a good turntable for playing them. But I would still be near the head of the line to snatch up any subsequent reissues. Years ago I saw several of their recordings on cd, but foolishly passed on them, thinking they would be in circulation for awhile. Silly me. Like I said, grab this before they post the infamous notice "no longer available."

When the PJBE made it's first American tour back in the 70s I was already a huge fan. I went to hear them play, never expecting the concert to sound as good as the recordings. They opened with the Tylman Susato Renaissance Suite and their playing immediately blew away any Memorex memories of their recordings. Unfortunately, we will never again hear live such virtuosity and musicianship. The recordings DO serve as a fine memory of the first and foremost brass ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Great start! Now where is the rest?.......2001-05-31

I have always been a huge fan of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. They set a very high standard of playing and the recordings, most of which are not available on CD, are excellent.

Where are their landmark recordings of such works as the Hindemith works for brass ensembles: Concert music for strings and brass, Morgenmusik for brass, Concert music for piano, brass and harps which they played flawlessly?

Where is their outstanding recording of the Gunther Schuller Symphony for Brass?

Please, Decca, give us more of the full course, not merely the teasers and encores.

4 out of 5 stars A Soothing And Unique Collection of Bach's Music.......2003-12-29

THE BACH ALBUM is a beautiful and relaxing collection of Bach arias. Most of the pieces included in the collection are not instantly recognized by the average listener (I include myself in this category) which makes the collection unique and in my opinion gives the collection more of an appeal. I often use it as background music when I am trying to complete a project or wish to create a relaxing atmosphere. Listeners expect great musicianship from both Kathleen Battle and Itzhak Perlman and both deliver exceptional performances. Both compliment each other and neither seems to be competing for attention. The Orchestra of St. Luke's, under the direction of John Nelson supports the two principal musicians well. This album is a must for Bach lovers and anyone else who appreciates the musicianship of these two extraordinary talents.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Heartfelt.......2003-01-14

This CD is a serious candidate for Battle's best - her voice is flawless and at its most expressive (which is saying a lot, considering how gorgeous her voice ALWAYS is), the recording quality itself is warm and intimate, and Mr. Perlman's playing forms an exquisitely tender accompaniment to Battle's singing. I find myself returning again and again to this recording - it will always hold a treasured spot in my collection. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Candidate for the most beautiful piece of music ever written.......2002-08-15

I believe that track 5 of this CD, "Bete...", is a candidate for the most beautiful piece of music that Bach ever wrote, and therefore for the most beautiful piece of music ever written.

4 out of 5 stars I'm Enjoying This, My First Real Exposure to Bach, Immensely.......2001-01-31

What I love about this album is that some of the selections have an air of rustic simplicity being, as they are, composed predominantly to showcase a single voice and violinist. Ms. Battle's lovely voice, though classically-trained, never overwhelms the (mostly) sacred intent of the songs on this album and her diction and attention to the text is a wonderful thing to behold. None of these songs are dazzling in the way, say, the Queen of the Night's aria (with all of those high F's) is but they are all beautifully rendered here. Itzhak Perlman's playing complements Ms. Battle and one never gets the impression that these two musicians are trying to outshine the other (regardless of what Ms. Battle's reputation may have you believing!). The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because after an hour the music seems a bit monochromatic. I'm not faulting Perlman or Battle for that, I'm sure that these songs are performed exactly as J.S. Bach wrote them. This is the kind of album one could play to unwind after a long day at the office or school. The tone of the album is a tranquil one without any peaks (or valleys) but, while this may be boring for some, I find the uniformity soothing. Again, I must take my hat off to the accomplished playing of Itzhak Perlman and singing of Kathleen Battle. (The inlay has an essay that is informative though dry, while the English translations of the lyrics are poetic and, for the most part, accurate.) Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Bach, Battle, & Perlman at Their Finest.......2000-07-06

The magnificence of each J. S. Bach composition featured in this performance is equalled only by the incomparable mastery of coloratura by Kathleen Battle and the cello virtuoso of Itzhak Perlman. I must take exception on two points made in the review of the "music fan from Boston" when reference is made to the "prima donna antics" of Ms. Battle. First, we are reviewing the unmatched soprano skill and vocal talents of Ms. Battle, not her person. I am reminded of the first time I ever heard of Maria Callas. It was not because of her musical ability that I was first introduced to her, but in a newpapaer review that lambasted her "blatantly obnoxious, immature and reprehensible behavior, unbecoming of one of her professional stature." Yet this and other unfavorable characterizations never diminished or tarnished her reputation as a noted soprano. Secondly, the "fan from Boston" says that Ms. Battle's "German is a little suspect." Has anyone ever heard Pavoratti sing in English? A far cry from perfect execution of the language, but, again, we are reviewing the vocal artistry here, not linguistics. The reviews from both S. Africa and Autralia are absolutely correct in their assesments of this remarkable CD and are a refreshing alternative to the brain-washed opinions resulting from over-exposure to U.S. opportunistic/sensationalistic media who delight in the unprofessional and childish practice of bashing Kathleen Battle. Kathleen Battle ranks as one of greatest soprano voices ever. You only have to listen to this performance of Bach's music to confirm my assertion. Her abilities speak for themselves.

With Herbert von Karajan leading the Berlin Philharmonic in any performance, there are some automatic expectations: the music will be delivered with exemplary polish, balance, and a clear, logically implemented overall concept. These values will be pursued, if necessary, even at the expense of dramatic impact--the kind of impact you expect and get from Muti and Giulini, but there will be a beauty and a coordination in the performance that compensates for any lessening of purely theatrical excitement. As a matter of fact, there is plenty of theatrical impact in this Don Giovanni, and there are moments when the singing lacks the ultimate polish, but von Karajan's touch is evident everywhere, and it makes a tremendous difference. --Joe McLellan

4 out of 5 stars The Most Beautifully Sung Don G But Not Dramatic or Moving.......2006-02-28

CAST: Samuel Ramey [Don Giovanni] ** Paata Burchuladze [Commendatore/La Statua] ** Anna Tomowa-Sintow [Donna Anna] ** Gösta Winbergh [Don Ottavio] ** Agnes Baltsa [Donna Elvira] ** Ferruccio Furlanetto [Leporello] ** Alexander Malta [Masetto] ** Kathleen Battle [Zerlina] ** Chor der Deutschen Oper Berlin ** Berlin Philharmonic ** Herbert von Karajan (conductor)

This early 1980's recording compliments the film version of the production by Karajan both at the Met and Salzburg Festival. A perennial favorite, it's blessed with the great talents of Maestro Karajan and his illustrious Berlin forces, bass Samuel Ramey in his prime and a vocally beautiful cast. While many operaphiles love this recording, I don't find it especially moving or dramatic. It is almost strictly for fans of Samuel Ramey or Karajan's take on Don Giovanni. Far from the more vigorous 60's Don Giovanni performances, this recording finds Karajan in the last decade of his life - the 80's. Consequently, his treatment of the score is less fresh or dramatic, and is so easy for him it feels like he could conduct it with his eyes closed, a tendency of his. The strength of this recording is the beauty, most likely because the musicians and the singers are young and trained by an old master. Kathleen Battle was in her prime and this role was one which garnered her much acclaim as a Mozart soprano. As Zerlina, she sings with sweet youthfulness, purity of tone and a refined, feminine allure. She makes Zerlina too flat, however, and lacks any character. This Zerlina is not feisty, scheming and or conflicted, which is how she should be portrayed. "Vorrei e non vorrei" "I can and I cannot go with you" she tells Don Giovanni in the famous "La Ci Darem La Mano" duet. She is betrothed to the peasant Masetto, and earnestly in love with him, but she has a definate attraction for him, especially because he has promised to better her social status. In such dramatic moments as when Zerlina is about to be raped by Don Giovanni at his own ball and screams out "Genti! Genti! Soccoridimi!" (People! People! Help me!)she doesn't sing with any real intensity. Frankly, Kathleen Battle could have cared less if her Zerlina was any good. She is on here to show off, to be seen and take part of a production with the great Karajan while he was still alive. But if you are a fan of Miss Battle, this one is for you.

Mezzo soprano Agnes Baltsa was a versatile and gifted singer, just as successful in her Mozart and bel canto roles as she was in the dramatic mezzo soprano roles of Italian opera - like Princess Eboli in Don Carlos or even Venus in Wagner's Tannhauser. As Elvira, she sings with a supreme mastership of Mozart's music and recitative, she is far more committed to the character than Kathleen Battle's Zerlina. She sings with genuine dramatic integrity and still sounds beautiful. I love her account of "A Che Mi Dice Mai" and the coloratura showpiece -" Me Tradita Il Alma Ingrato". She is warm, round, a full mezzo voice with enough flexibility to essay the highs and lows of the character. She's feisty, passionate, vindictive and yet never borders on hysteria. Elvira suits her so beautifully. She's even better than Kiri Te Kenawa who sang Zerlina to much acclaim.

Ferrucio Furlanetto's Leporello is well-executed from a vocal perspective. His voice is rich, Italian and he is an intelligent singer. He is far better as Leporello than Don Giovanni, a role he also sang, often switching with Samuel Ramey. As Leporello, he is everything the grumbling servant is supposed to be. Paata Burchuladze as the Commandatore is superb as the Commandatore. To my ears, he's the finest interpretor. He is masculine, strong, fatherly and even God-like. It is the Commandatore who sends Don Giovanni to hell after all. It should be sung with vigor and this is what Burchuladze does. Alexander Malta sings the role of Masetto. Like another reviewer states, I much prefer a lighter baritone as Masetto, for Masetto must come off as a good guy next to the bad Don Giovanni. But unlike Don Ottavio, Masetto must also come off as romantic and winsome. Malta is too gruff and growling as Masetto. As for Gosta Windbergh, he truly understands how to effectively portray Don Ottavio. Ottavio's character is written to bore the audience. Without being too overt about it, Mozart must have intended for audiences to have a sneaky suspicion that Ottavio holds no real charms for Donna Anna. He may be protective, dutiful and romantic, but Dona Ana must find him lackluster and dull next to the more exciting Don Giovanni. Though this is always open to interpretation, a lot of people say this about the Ottavio/Anna relationship. Thus, Windberg sings the arias "Dalla Sua Pace" and "Mio Tesoro" along with other scenes with the appropriate boring quality, even a mechanical voice. Soprano Anna Tomowa Sintow was considered a "Karajan" voice - beautiful but strong in the dramatic department. Tomowa-Sintow's Dona Ana is dramatically satisfying. She is able to sing everything just right! I loved her "Or Sai che L'onore" and her "Non Mi Dir" plus all her other scenes. She is actually taking the modern approach of Dona Ana. She is no rape victim who is also demanding justice for the death of father. Rather, she is somewhat attracted by the man who murdered her father and this is what's bothering her. Don Giovanni is virile and attractive and far more exciting than her dull boyfriend/fiance Ottavio. In order to rid herself of the attraction to the Don, she wants Don Ottavio to extract revenge and have him killed. Thus, everything she sings has a tension to it and a strong passionate intensity. The Dona Ana of Edda Moser most effectively implies this, but so does Anna Tomowa Sintow's.

Samuel Ramey as Don Giovanni was perhaps his greatest success as a bass-baritone. In the 80's when he sang the role, audiences felt his interpretation was modern, bold and completely different from previous Don Giovannis they had seen - Ezio Pinza, Cesare Siepi and Eberhard Wachter. Rather than performing with the old school conservative style, Ramey makes the Don unabashedly sexual and seductive. His voice is actually a "basso-cantante" and there is nothing truly dramatic about it. He scored huge success singing Rossini and Italian bel canto. Everything he sings in the bass range is beautiful but seldom dramatic. Thus, when I hear his Don Giovanni, I hear the most beautifully sung Don Giovanni. He doesn't strike me as a rogue or villain. His style is just too beautiful to hear. While many may find his Don Giovanni to be one of the best, I don't think so. This same "too sexy and sweet to be a rotten guy" technique is also present in his Scarpia under DG with Mirella Freni and Placido Domingo. His "Devil" roles were also beautifully sung. Everyone just loves Samuel Ramey because he sings so beautifully. This recording is great for what it is but I think you can choose from better Don Giovannis, like the following:

Mozart Don Giovanni: Ruggero Raimondi, Jose Van Dam, Kiri Te Kenawa, Edda Moser, Teresa Berganza, Malcolm King/Lorin Maazel

Mozart: Don Giovanni/Eberhard Wachter, Joan Sutherland, Luigi Alva, Gottlib Frick, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Giuseppe Taddei, Piero Cappucilli/ Carlo Maria Giulini

Mozart: Don Giovanni/Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Sena Jurinac, Maria Stader,Imgard Seefried, Karl Christian Kohn/ Ferenc Fricsay

Mozart Don Giovanni: Eberhard Wachter, Fritz Wunderlich, Leontyne Price, Walter Berry, Elisabeth Schwartzkopff/Karajan

Mozart Don Giovanni/Cesare Siepi, Birgit Nilsson, Leontyne Price, Fernando Corena/Leinsdorf

3 out of 5 stars Some great singing, but this Don has a steel spine.......2006-02-27

The timing for this recording couldn't have been better vocally speaking: Samuel Ramey was ascending as an eminent Don with the best bass voice for the role since Siepi, and the rest of Karajan's cast, except for the Don Ottavio, is first-rate. So why does this feel like an over-disciplined conductor's show, with almost no humor or humanity? Karajan was capable of much better, yet somehow both this and his Decca Figaro feel steely and impersonal, despite all the musical skill being applied. If others admire the technical accomplishment, I can't disagree. It's just a feeling thing.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious!.......2006-02-14

This is a marvelous recording. The more I listen to it, the more deeply in love with it I fall. While von Karajan's tempos can be a little slow, he is very precise, and every amazing note of Mozart can be heard. His dynamics are dead-on, although I disagree with some of his articulations (I am thinking specifically of the inexplicable forte-piano on Donna Anna and Don Giovanni's driving tritones in the "Non sperar, se non m'uccidi" section of the opening).

These were the glory days of Samuel Ramey. While he is slightly wooden in the role of Don Giovanni, his voice is beautiful. His forceful introduction in the first scene is very memorable, as is his beautiful rendition of "Deh, vieni alla finestra." The dark gold tones of his voice are also perfectly capable of the fire necessary for his final scene. He and Furlanetto (Leporello) performed these roles together often, even alternating them at times, and their wonderful chemistry communicates itself in this recording--an essential thing, as the relationship between master and servant is crucial to the opera. Their voices blend beautifully, as well.

Ferruccio Furlanetto is my favorite Leporello. He transforms Leporello from a ridiculous clown to a fascinating, sympathetic character, which comes across in the recording. At the same time, Furlanetto is wonderfully comical, and seems to be having a blast. These were also his glory days; Furlanetto's voice is big and juicy, but rich and dark, like chocolate sauce. There are times, even in his comic "Madamina" aria, when he sounds like he is caressing the music. His "Perdon, perdono, signori miei" section in "Sola, sola in buio loco" is sublime.

While Agnes Baltsa (Donna Elvira) is perfectly good, she uses a little too much chest voice for my taste in some numbers (particularly "Sola, sola in buio loco). "Mi tradi" is sung well enough, but without a great deal of fire on her part. On the other hand, there were moments, particularly "L'ultima prova," when I was simply enchanted by her. She has a beautiful voice, and a great passion in that last scene which does not express itself in gasps and grunts which detract from the music.

Anna Tomowa-Sintow is a little old for the role of Donna Anna, but sings it with gusto nevertheless, her voice a perfect fit for the music. "Or sai chi l'onore," one of my favorite arias, is powerfully and masterfully done. Winbergh has a beautiful, beautiful voice, bringing some wonderful expressions to "Dalla sua pace" in particular. He and Tomowa-Sintow sing "Fuggi, crudele, fuggi!" with both fire and tenderness, proving themselves worthy of the roles in this amazing duet.

Kathleen Battle is a sweet-voiced Zerlina, charming and innocent. I have had the privilege of hearing this singer live, and her silver-bell-tones are a delight. Her Masetto is Alexander Malta, an older but unique Masetto--he is a gruff but ultimately cuddly Masetto. His "Ho capito, signor si" is wonderfully spiteful. His voice is not my favorite, however; I would have liked to hear a smoother baritone in the role, with less growl. Somehow, I cannot like this recording any less for it--he is still a fantastic Masetto, and his voice is far from unpleasant, just less than idealistic.

This recording is wonderful for hearing most every note. It seems to be one of the few times Leporello's "Ah, cosa fate!" in the Act I finale is sung instead of shrieked, and the same can be said for the screams of Donna Elvira and Leporello in the Act II finale. The orchestra is marvelous; the strings in "Dalla Sua Pace" sound ecclesiastical, with a blend as blissful as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The recitative is crisp, and very much where the characters are expressed and developed. The sound is crystal-clear, allowing the layers of beauty in each voice to be heard. Altogether, a wonderful recording.

one can not simply write a review about mozart ... there are certain levels of creativity that traverse methods of critique ,for they represent the (standards) which everything else is measured by ...

Don giovanni has been called the perfect opera because it has delivered a wide spectrum of emotions as a satire mixture between comedy and tragedy ...

i would never imply a musical evaluation of (Don Giovanni) for the above mentioned reasons ,rather ,i would give my (own) likings in this wonderful tour de force.

The Stylistic ingenuity was clear in the finale of the first act ... the three dances which perfectly incarnated the different social states of characters which we are about to encounter ...

Moreover ,the evil D Minor key which is utilised throughout the opera is a strong indication towards the macabre murder of the Commendatore on the hands of the depraved Don Giovanni ... again ,that key conveys fury and terror near the end when Don Giovanni confronts the stone statue ,and the dramatic descent into the depths of hell ...

The performance is outstanding ,and karajan with his militaristically steady -and the unusual slow tempo - conductance - adds the drastic touch which enriches this dark voyage ...

4 out of 5 stars A Don Giovanni That Is Tried And True.......2005-09-19

I would love to say I selected this set after research and careful comparisons with other sets available, but I did not. In the late 1980's/early 90's the Metropolitan Opera in New York staged a new production of the work and it was broadcast on PBS. There was something about the production that made me decide I had to have the recording. The following day I purchased the only set available which was this set. It was a set of cassettes. I put the first tape in my Walkman and it served me well until I got a compact disc player and now the CDs serve me well almost fifteen years later.

Since that time I have listened to many other versions of the opera and there are many fine recordings of the work. While there are some recordings from the 1950's and 60's that are standouts, this set does have some strengths. First would be the Giovanni/Leporello pairing of Samuel Ramey and Ferruccio Ferlanetto. Ramey is one of the better Giovanni's of his generation, and he has performed the role with Ferlanetto as his trusty servant and at time partner in crime for many years. In some productions the two have traded off roles, as was once the tradition since the physical characteristic of the Giovanni and Leporello are supposed to be similar. Their onstage camaraderie finds its way into this recording. Anna Timowa-Sintow is excellent as Donna Anna and we are treated to a young Kathleen Battle singing Zerlina, one of her better roles. Karajan favorite Agnes Baltsa is Donna Elvira. While she does bring some gifts to her interpretation, there are times she can be a bit too strong and somewhat rash, but if you're playing a woman scored, this may not be a bad thing.

One of the criticisms of this recording is Herbert von Karajan's conducting. Some see his tempo as a bit too slow and that he doesn't bring enough out of the Berlin Philharmonic. This is interesting because when it comes to Karajan, usually the criticisms leveled are the opposite: the tempo is too fast and that he's too heavy handed. I will agree that the pace is somewhat slower, but it gives the work a darker more sinister tone which is appropriate for an opera about a womanizing murderer who come to a bad end.

Whether this is your first choice, or you're looking for a good second choice of this great work, you should have plenty of enjoyment from this set.

In telling the story of Gustav Mahler's socially tempestuous wife and fellow composer-songwriter Alma, director Bruce Beresford faced great challenges. But they would seem to pale in comparison to the task of composer Stephen Endelman, who was variously asked to highlight Alma's largely unfamiliar songs, economically echo Mahler's most sweeping works, and compose an original score that meshed seamlessly with the Mahlers' music. Though purists may grumble somewhat, Endelman has largely succeeded here, capturing the rich drama and emotion at the heart of both Mahlers' disparate music while compacting it to fit the medium's constraints. Soprano Renée Fleming voices Alma's "Bei Ist Es Traut" and "Laau Sommernacht" in new recordings with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet, as well as Gustav's "Ruckert Lied No. 5" backed by the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. Edited catalog Vienna Symphony performances of Gustav's Symphony no. 3 conducted by Claudio Abbado and Symphonies nos. 5 and 6 by Pierre Boulez are also featured, along with the feverish violin music of Gypsy musical savant Janos Bihari, performed here by Roby Lakatos and Ensemble. Endelman's underscore is used sparingly, forging measured emotional links betwixt the Mahlers' own stormy compositions. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-03-16

I had no idea of Alma Mahler's composing talents until I listened to this CD! She is very different from her husband who is heavier and moodier. Her music is lighter and sentimental at the same time. Listen and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars great movie and story - see it soon.......2005-08-14

this is a great movie about the life of alma mahler/schindler. her life and her work are inspiring - it's too bad that more people haven't heard about her. however, such is the story with many powerful women of the past. hopefully the future will not be the same.

2 out of 5 stars renee fleeming sounds sublime, but to little her from.......2003-08-04

Sure renee fleeming's voice was giving the ears a treatment of the silky and the beauty. When you listen to the soundtrack you then find her voice is only present on three short tracks.A little more imagination they should of had.For renee fleeming they should have more used.It happends all this cd is,except for renee fleeming's contribution,is a hospodge of mahler music that has been for the most part already recorded to death anyway.Where was the vision and the fire with these recordings. Are they still trying to turn more people away from classical music.I must also say that the cover art is ugly and the eye sore that gauges the eyes.Furthermore to much blue on blue to make a vomiting hue!!!I gave it two stars instead of one because of the magic of rennee fleeming's singing and the intelligence of her interpretations.Alas, even renee could not totally redeem this recording due to the fact that the three songs renee sings are so short they don't even count together as ten minutes. I wouldn't buy this with money i found on the ground!!!!! Try another cd from amazon instead peace out!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Surprise!.......2001-06-17

I bought this soundtrack, even though I never saw the film. I put it in my portable cd player and was I surprised! It was such a great cd. I really like the female soprano. All the songs she sings are beautiful! Even though they are in German!

For the lightness and lilt, one need look no farther than Herbert von Karajan's New Year's Day 1987 offering with the Vienna Philharmonic. Playing to the manner born, the Viennese are on their very best behavior for Karajan and summon every last nuance out of the music. Kathleen Battle sings the Voices of Spring exquisitely, and every one of the performances vibrates with life. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Still A Splendid New Year's Concert Recording from the Wiener Philharmoniker and Herbert von Karajan.......2007-04-11

In 1986 the Wiener Philharmoniker decided to invite annually a guest conductor to conduct its popular New Year's Day concerts, which still do garner interest from devout classical music fans around the globe. The first conductor so honored, Herbert von Karajan, made the concert his own memorial tribute to the Strauss family (Johann Strauss, Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss), emphasizing such popular pieces as the "Die Fledermaus" overture and "Voices of Spring" waltz, featuring an elegant solo from acclaimed American soprano Kathleen Battle. It still remains one of the finest concert recordings in the history of the Wiener Philharmoniker's annual concerts, holding its own against recent recordings featuring the likes of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Mariss Jansons, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta and Riccardo Muti among others. Devout fans of the Strauss family, Wiener Philharmoniker and Herbert von Karajan won't be disappointed with this memorable concert performance, which this single CD has captured almost virtually in its entirety.

5 out of 5 stars A great and moving valedictory.......2007-02-16

Despite his long association with the Vienna Phil., I don't believe Karajan was invited to conduct a New Year's concert until this event in 1987. He wasn't a beloved personality, but as the DVD shows, he seemed tiny and frail that night, and he delivered the traditional New Year's greeting to the audience with obvious emotion. Death was not far from anyone's mind. For me, Karajan is the pre-eminent conductor of Johann Strauss in his generation, and all his recordings of waltzes and polkas, going back to an EMI disc made literally in the rubble of post-war Vienna, are must-listens. Here he's not as lively or alert as in the past, but the orchestra still plays beautifully and thhere's a patina of nostaliga in every bar.

Musically the high point is a ravishing Voices of Spring sung by Kathleen Battle in her most magical style. Look to other Karajan recordings for more sparkle and zest; look to this one for a once-in-a-lifetime event.

5 out of 5 stars The best Strauss collection on CD.......2001-06-02

If you're looking for a single CD of the Strauss family's music, look no further than this recording of the 1987 New Year's Day concert (which is also available on DVD, and is perhaps the most recommendable Karajan concert film).

Every work is marvellously conducted, played, and recorded. Highlights include the wonderful Fledermaus Overture, Spharenklange (Music of the Spheres), and Fruhlingsstimmen (Voices of Spring, with Kathleen Battle in superb voice). As for the Blue Danube, has it ever been played more magically than on this record?

The only snag is the absence of any notes in the fold out booklet.

4 out of 5 stars Missing Battle? :-(.......2000-02-29

I am a big fan of Kathleen Battle and the Vienna Philharmonic. The quality of the recording was excellent as is the case for all the New Year's Day concerts. The main reason I purchased this Cd was to hear Kathleen Battle. Although she is said to perform 3 selections this is not the case. Miss Battle only is present on one selection-Voices of Spring.

5 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle's "Rite of Spring was indeed the highlight........1999-06-18

Of the entire Strauss repertoire presented, none could compare to the splendid soprano solo by Kathleen Battle on "Rite of Spring." Ms. Battle demonstrates why, despite her Met dismissal, her colloratura remains unequalled in classical music, past and present. Certainly there has never been and will never be a soprano who can match her voice control and tonal precision. Without a doubt, hers is one of the greatest soprano voices of the century.

After years of being one of the foremost singers of light lyrics, Kathleen Battle, searching for challenging new musical expression, tackles the dramatic Mozart repertory. Blessed with one of our generation's prettiest soubrette voices, Battle breezes through the technical challenges of the Countess and Constanze, but sounds like a little girl trying on Mommy's shoes. She lacks the vocal variety and depth to successfully bring these pieces to life. Her renditions of the soubrette repertory, especially "Ruhe sanft," are Mozartfully graceful. In the Magic Flute excerpts she demonstrates that merely singing Mozart's written notes is enough to bring its beauty to life; practically all necessary expression is written into the musical lines. -- Barbara Eisner Bayer

5 out of 5 stars The Best Battle Album........2007-02-10

I have most of Kathleen Battle's albums and must say this is my favorite. Her distinctive voice is crisp and sails effortlessly through the music, James Levine on the piano is fantastic and compliments her as if the two had been made for each other, the repitoire is expertly selected, and the recording is crystal clear. This is Battle in the prime of her career -- this is one of those albums you will find yourself coming back to.

5 out of 5 stars Ah, Kathleen!.......2006-03-04

I have been looking to reacquire this album for forever!! It's great, and I love Kathleen's voice here.

I have to say, though, that the Amazon.com editorial review must have been written for another album, for neither 'Ruhe Sanft' nor anything from 'Die Zauberflote' is on this disc.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest of recital albums, part 2.......2005-09-04

It's hard to simply repeat what someone else has written, but before I noticed the review above, I was going to say that this is the greatest vocal recital I've ever heard. It's a pleausre to be the second to voice that opinion.

Why is the editorial review about Mozart? Amazon nods.

5 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Kathleen Battle Has Done It Again!!.......2002-03-04

Go Kathleen! I often dream of what music will sound like behind the Pearly Gates of Heaven-my dreams are no more, I have found what I've been searching for. Just push play and then be prepared for your body and soul to leave this earth behind. Believe me new and established fans-she IS that good.

From the first to the last track "La Battle" captivates and stuns her audience into a cult-like stupor. Indulge in Purcell's "Music for a While". After listening to a 30 second clip, I knew I needed this CD. She slowly and sensually lulls you with her perfected pronunciation. Her performance is like rich imported chocolate melting in your mouth. On Mendelssohn's "Neue Liebe" "La Battle" does an about face and speeds things up a bit. This tounge-twisting, finger-snapping performance is outstanding. Only a great opera Diva can handle such difficult piece of work, but as well all know, Kathleen never disappoints!

Kathleen masters Mozart's " Ridente la calma, Das Veilchen and Un moto di gioia". She paints such wonders with her voice that Monet must be rolling around in his grave. ;)
The 4 Spiritual at the end deserves only the utmost Praise. "Honor, Honor, His Name So Sweet, and Witness and He's Got the Whole World in His Hand". Check out her fantastically flawless super-HIGH notes! These songs are reason enough to get this CD.

I will forever be a Battle fan because of this recital. Thank you for making the Opera world a better place. We LOVE you Kathleen!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest of recital albums!.......2002-01-16

Kathleen Battle In Concert has been a part of my classical listening experience for many, many years, and many, many repeated playings. Every time I play it, I feel real joy at hearing Kathleen Battle in the opening bars of Purcell's "Come All Ye Songsters."

Miss Battle brings a high level of musicality, an impeccable use of phrasing and some truly beatiful high notes to a wonderful mix of lighter art/love songs, and more serious, but very joyous gospel classics, as in her rendition of "He's Got the Whole World In His Hands."

It's been too many years since Kathleen Battle has recorded such a delightful recital album. If you're reading this Miss Battle, please please record another! We miss your voice greatly!!!

If you've read this far, you're probably considering purchasing this CD because you're a fan of the fine British air war films and their soundtracks from which the selections contained therein are taken. Except that they're NOT, in fact, taken from the soundtracks: they're copied, very poorly, by a British "concert" band, the kind you can hear on any Sunday afternoon on any bandstand in any public garden in Blighty. Buyer beware then, mate. But I say, old boy, it would be awfully jolly if you could manage the genuine article sometime, what, there's a good chap. Pip, pip, cheerio!
