I love this CD. The music is very uplifting. If you love Baroque Music then you can't go wrong with this CD. Great Price and Value.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Bargain-priced CD!!.......2002-02-13

I originally purchased this disc as an EMI Classics Red Line release (I think I paid $5.99 for it). It was a steal then, and remains so today on the Seraphin line (simple a reissue of the same EMI Red Line release).

Maurice Andre is a fantastic trumpet player, and he simply shines on this recording (featuring the Academy of St. Martins on the Field under Sir Neville Marriner). Bargain-priced CDs tend to get the proverbial bum rap, but Seraphin (as usual) offers a first-rate recording that can compete with any full-priced release. I've listened to this disc at least 20 times, and I never tire of it. Andre and Marriner bring to life these works, some by lesser-known composers (like Stolzel, Telemann and Torelli). I can't think of a better introduction to these underrated Baroque artists (with the exception of Sony's 'Baroque in Italy' CD, which sadly is now out-of-print, too).

This recording, as with so many others, will not be available forever. Given the quality of the recording and beauty of the pieces, I strongly recommend purchasing this disc before it, too, goes out-of-print. It's a great disc at a great price, and would be a welcomed addition to any Classical music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Better than a dab of Imperial margarine.......2001-03-01

This is a great feel-good record. Music to reign by.

The Stölzel concerto for four instrumental choirs is a particular gem, a great piece to cue up and wake up in the morning to. There is nothing particularly deep or heavy here. All of these pieces are light, in major keys. They are well recorded and well played.

5 out of 5 stars One of my best CDs.......2001-01-07

This CD is just a delight. If you enjoy Baroque, you will find this CD one of your favorites. It has a pleasant register and a lightness that is a pleasure to any ear. An excellent value.

Georg Philipp Telemann's string concertos position themselves somewhere between the polyphonic complexity of the Bach orchestral sinfonias, the urbanity of Handel's concerti grossi, and Vivaldi's innumerable and endlessly delightful works of this type. But his approach always remained the most international as well as the most local. Two of these concertos, for example, exemplify the "Polish" style appropriate for the Electors of Saxony (Telemann's employers, who were also kings of Poland), with their folky rhythms and groaning bass parts. Telemann offers a bit of the French style galant here or Italian theatricality there--he's labeled one of the movements "Arlechinoso"--as the mood and moment suit him. Reinhard Goebel and the Musica Antiqua Köln dress these motleys with typical panache, a liveliness that argues once again for the validity of the period-instruments approach. One can well imagine Telemann hearing his music performed this way and nodding in approval. What the players have brought to Johann David Heinichen and some of the Baroque composers of the Baltic states serves them perfectly here: the conviction that while not all 18th-century music may match Bach's profundity, much of it nevertheless shows us a very good time. And that Telemann, perhaps, can show us the best time of all. --Robert Burns Neveldine

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Give Me that Good Ol' Baroque.......2006-02-26

Another bizarre and quirky performance by the people who play most things just too fast and others with stylized bad musicianship - the 'anything to be new and different crowd.' Where are they getting these ideas from? Not from any history I've ever read. The first movement of the G major viola concerto is a case in point with its annoying thud on the strong beats. The third movement is strangely rushed and the fourth is just plain too darn fast. Is this a new European thing? - everything very fast? And, though old instruments can be made to sound wonderful, the sound here is simply not good. While this group has produced a number of recordings over recent years (under various leaders) that are banal and rushed, they are now wandering into the weird and ungainly. Not my Baroque.

3 out of 5 stars excellent recording, some mediocre content.......2006-02-21

The playing on this CD is excellent and the recording quality is fine. Some of the pieces are less interesting in terms of their composition in my opinion however. The later pieces on this disc with a more prominent solo instrument are perhaps the best here. If you are exploring baroque era music and are looking to try out Telemann you might consider his fantasias for solo violin or some of his excellent cantatas as a better place to start. He wrote some good table music as well.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Rendition!.......2004-02-29

Beautiful music, beautifully conducted and performed.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and unique performance-practice interpretations.......2003-11-26

I have listened to the entire CD, and it was thoroughly enjoyable throughout every single track. I bought this CD especially for the viola concerto and double viola concerto. Florian Deuter performs these pieces in a unique and totally convincing manner. The articulations (especially fast movements) are completely opposite of what one might normally choose to do in an interpretation of a faster movement. In this rendition, the 16th notes (2nd movement) are decidedly played off the string (short) and the 8th notes are on (long). I would never have imagined liking it that way, but I totally did! The orchestral accompaniment always sounds great in tone, and the balance between the soloist and orchestra is always very good. This is my new favorite recording of the Telemann Concerto.

Kenneth Martinson- professor of Viola at Western Illinois University, asst. editor of the American Viola Society Journal.

5 out of 5 stars Top-notch performance of a well-selected A-list.......2003-01-30

The Music Antiqua Cologne are my favorite ensemble; their playing is always top-notch. Further, this is a selection of some of Telemann's best works.

This is among the best CD's I've ever heard; great playing, great composing.

3 out of 5 stars Average.......2007-05-08

The recording does not have the depth of sound that I was seeking. The selections are okay but could be better--however, this is only a preference. I more or less use the album as background music/noise; do not confuse Telemann with poor music but the recording, yes.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-02-05

In his day, George Philip Telemann was more popular than Bach. But, as a Telemann fan, I GREATLY enjoy this CD. Additionally, I especially like flutes and violins. The CD includes one of Telemann's best pieces, Suite in A minor for Flute (Suite a-moll) which is a wonderful delight. Telemann also composed concertos for trumpet and one is included here as well. If you haven't tried Telemann, this CD would be a good bet. It's quite versatile too--can be just listened to, used as background music, meditated to, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Collection of Baroque Concertos.......2004-02-16

Telemann certainly was a prolific composer. For some forty-six years he composed much for both church and court.

Composing so much, he understood well the capabilities of each instrument and composed much for each. Here, for flute, oboe and trumpet, as well as strings.

The trio for oboes is especially charming.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, a great find.......2002-08-01

I really enjoyed this CD because I couldn't find the Suite in a minor by Telemann, until now. A beautiful Rejouissance I must say. I would love to hear longer samples of all the classical music, because I appreciate it so much.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly........2003-09-20

That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.

5 out of 5 stars A must have album!.......2001-09-17

The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.

5 out of 5 stars Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21

Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the trumpet player's library!.......1999-09-23

If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

5 out of 5 stars Great all around - especially Mozart.......2005-06-30

Every concerto/piece for flute and orchestra presented here can stand as the very pinnacle of performance and interpretation. Rampal and friends play with all the logic and song of the French school. I would like to commend the Mozart G Major concerto in particular, as Rampal's is the best performance I know (I've heard a better one, but that was on internet radio and I wasn't able to find out who performed it - I'm still searching). I have heard 10 other G Majors, all by worthy soloists with the likes of the VPO or LSO accompanying, and none can outdo Rampal's passionate yet low-key style with the absolutely glorious Israel Philharmonic (you might never have heard them - and you'll wonder why!) with a reasonably alert Zubin Mehta at the helm. The balance is wonderful, with the delicate middle string parts coming through clearly (shame on you, DG and Decca). If only Karl Boehm had been around to wave the stick for these Mozart recordings (The D Major and C Major here are also magnifcent, by the way), this would likely be hands-down the only set of Mozart concertos you'll ever need. Nevertheless, they are pretty darn close.

Every piece on these discs is wonderful, and I urge you to get them as quickly as possible. The style and wit of these recordings are not to be missed at any cost. As the English flutist William Bennett, whose recordings you should look into if you play flute, once told me, "Be a light person - like Jean-Pierre Rampal!"

5 out of 5 stars Rampal: master flutist of the 20th Century.......2003-08-17

The late Jean-Pierre Rampal, whom I had the pleasure to meet and chat with in the 1980's, is a "triple threat" man, in analogy to the football term. Some fine players impress with their technique. I am swept along by Rampal's renditions in a way that makes me forget all about technique - except for miraculous nuances every now and then that remind me that Rampal recreates every work with a creative, perceptive mind. For example, in Vivaldi's "Goldfinch" concerto Rampal, as almost afterthoughts, puts in exquisite little embellishments that literally makes a little bird come to life. It's a miraculous sound. Too bad Antonio Vivaldi couldn't have heard it.

Rampal has other qualities that stand out in his recordings. He was well aware that most of the best flute music was composed in the Baroque and Classical eras, and sought out the very best, well known or rare, in these genres - while not being limited to these periods.

Finally, Rampal was picky about the ensembles he played with and the recording companies who did the technical work for his recordings. The ensembles might be famous or little known, but always high-quality cooperators. The result is nearly always, as in this case, brilliant, clear, and balanced.

Five stars gets used frequently in recording reviews - it's too little for this recording.

This is a delightful record. Telemann, one of the most prolific composers of all time, wrote music that is technically masterful, endlessly inventive, full of surprises, emotionally mercurial, and continuously engaging. In these five concertos, composed over two decades, the solo flutist is often joined by one or more soloists from the ranks of the orchestra, who, as in Telemann's day, are all fully equal to the task. This results in a wide variety of combinations and colors, illustrating Telemann's skill in displaying each instrument at its best, so as to "give the player joy, the listener pleasure," as he himself put it.

These performances certainly radiate infectious enjoyment. The concertos all follow the traditional form, alternating four slow and fast movements, but are infinitely diverse in tonality, texture, mood, and character. There are carefree, sprightly, playful, elegant dances, humorous imitation games, brilliant passage-work and cadenzas, startling chromaticisms, and deeply expressive melodies that beguile the ear and touch the heart. The first movement of the opening Concerto is so reminiscent of a Bach Arioso that one of the two composers must have "borrowed" it from the other. The playing is superb in a modified period-style: the pitch is normal; the sound wonderfully pure, but rich and full; tempi are designed to invite both virtuosity and leisurely enjoyment of musical and expressive details. Pahud uses a narrow, restrained vibrato that underlines the flawless beauty of his tone. The other players, all like him present or past principals of the Berlin Philharmonic, match him in the perfection of their intonation, phrasing, and ensemble. --Edith Eisler

5 out of 5 stars Telemann: Pleasurable Instrumentation - Modern Flute + Oboe D'Amore .......2007-06-12

"Give every instrument what suits it best. The player will enjoy himself and you'll be pleased." (Telemann - quoted from liner notes)

A couple of years ago, I played this recording of these flute concertos so much that I feel I lived in this music. I took them everywhere with me and listened to them all the time for several months. They are very beautiful, lively and will definitely lift the listener's spirits. The three other reviewers, particuarly Matthew M. Yau, have written very good and complete reviews. My only addition is to particularly praise the combination of the flute and oboe d'amore in the Concerto in E (#13-16) and the Vivace (#16) in particular. It is unbelieveably beautiful! I am also extremely fond of the Concerto in D (#17-20) and the Andante of the Concerto in G (#1). The liner notes tell an interesting story of this movement's reconstruction/restoration.

5 out of 5 stars Elegance and Charm, Not to Mention Beauty.......2006-06-13

I'll leave the musical analysis to others here, but this is one of the most charming and lovely flute recordings I've come across. Pahud has the right felicitous touch for this charming---there's no other word for it---music from the prolific G.P. Telemann. I've listened to it many times and never tire of it. Really. It's terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Telemann Perfection.......2005-07-08

Every recording I've heard from the EMI catalogue featuring Pahud and whatever orchestra he's accompanying has been splendid. He must have a great sense about whom to team up with and when. I really have to hand it to him and to his agent. This recording is no exception. Sublime interchange between composer, orchestra and soloist! Maestro Vivaldi lives on mainly in the vaults of Venice churches, where you have to travel to to appreciate the true quality of his music...It truly reverberates only in those ancient, richly adorned tempples.

The CD builds, fresco by fresco.. Starting with the Adagio driven G Major Flute , then travelling rather quickly to the Vivace second movement. The entire CD tends to be a study in that sort of contrast, which is one of the reasons that no matter in what venue we are listening to Vivaldi, he always mangaes to keep us alert! He was one of the first composers to engage in that sort of dimminuendo, zzzzzzzzzzzz.
Quiet you down to the stage that you're ready to nod off and then set a fire cracker off near your right ear!

Maybe not that bad, but I think Beethoven got a lot of his ideas in contrasting modes from first Vivaldi, then Mozart. It's just my own little theory, and I'm definitely no music maven, so just chalk it up to UFO theory type conjecture.

Don't let any of that dissuade you from purchasing this CD, however. It's clear, distinct, exceptionally executed! I can't detect a flaw in the ointment! 5 stars, no debate!

5 out of 5 stars Pahud makes a strong case, with two debut recordings.......2004-05-26

TELEMANN: FLUTE CONCERTOS is a rarely beautifully compilation. The five concertos for flute chosen for this recording illustrates exactly what suits the instrument best and accentuates the instrument's beauty. Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) not only wrote concertos for one flute or two, but also variously combined the flute with other concertante instruments, showing the virtuoso flute in a wide range of different roles.

The five pieces heard in this compilation were composed over a period of more than 20 years and fully demonstrate Telemann's engagement with the concerto genre. In each of the five works almost every member in the orchestras at Telemann's disposal was capable of taking solo parts. The beauty of sound springs forth from the combination with softer tone of instruments such as oboe d'amore, viola d'amore or violone, which enhance the flute's brilliance and crispness, while an often astonishing playfulness could develop in the high registers when Telemann introduced a second flute or a violin, as manifested obviously in the Concerto for Flute, Violin, Cello, Strings and Continuo in A from "Musique de Table I" (5-8).

Concerto for Flute, Strings and Continuo in G (1-4) is a first recording because the only manuscript copy of the parts was in an extremely poor condition that the piece was sadly considered unplayable (until 2000). The concerto was composed for oboe as well as for the transverse flute of the time. The andante movement is the most beautiful movement, so elegantly and stately executed. Pahud makes such a strong case for the first recording of this concerto.

Concerto for Flute, Violin, Cello, Strings and Continuo in A from "Musique de Table I" (5-8) is probably the most beautiful concerto in Musique de Table. The agility and swiftness of notes best suited the festive occasions for which Telemann composed in 1733. This might be the most well-known and most played piece out of this compilation. Even Handel himself performed some of the pieces and some of his own compositions (flute sonata and oboe sonata) show the inspiration of Telemann.

Concerto for Two Flutes, Violone, Strings and Continuo (9-12) is also a debut recording for the piece, with a deep, velvety tone of the violone that creates an impressive contrariety to the agility of the flutes, notably when the flutes and the violone play together in parallel for long stretches.

Concerto for Flute, Oboe d'amore, Viola d'amore, Strings and Continuo in E (13-16). The Largo in D minor forms a sharp contrast to the vivacious movements to Part 1 of Music de Table. In the Siciliano, the repeated theme and expression is achieved by repetition of three concertante instruments without the continuo.

Listen for the only concertos with a combination of flute and two other different solo instruments in the final piece of the compilation, Concerto for Flute, Strings and Continuo in D (17-20).

Overall high marks for the agility, flow, and swiftness of all the performances in this compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable CD.......2007-03-10

One of the best CD's heard. I've been looking for something this good for a long time.

5 out of 5 stars CORNUCOPIA.......2006-05-18

This disc is perfectly brilliant, and I can't recommend it strongly enough. Strictly speaking, only two of the four works given here are concertos, the other two being standard orchestral pieces with prominent work for the horns. Haydn's is one of his early symphonies from his Esterhazy period featuring also solos for cello and violin in its slow movement and a long finale consisting of a set of variations in a kind of gavotte rhythm giving the spotlight to various other members of the orchestra, notably flute and viola da gamba. The Telemann `overture' is a suite in nine movements, along the lines of Handel's Water Music or Fireworks Music but with more pictorial and representational elements. The contribution from Handel himself is a short introduction and andante, suggestive of a formal occasion and with the introduction using material familiar from the Fireworks Music.

The real cracker is Schumann's short concerto, in the usual 3-movement layout. This was described by Tovey as nearly unplayable, but today's virtuosi seem to be afraid of nothing. They even restore some high notes that Schumann revised out of the score, and what a thrilling effect they make. The four soloists are the lead horn-players, American by nationality, in various European orchestras, and they cover themselves with distinction from start to finish. Four virtuoso horn solos naturally take the limelight off the orchestra, but the Sinfonia Varsovia acquit themselves splendidly, particularly in the Haydn symphony where the treatment of the instruments is more democratic and all sections of the band get their chance to shine.

The recording, from Warsaw in 2003, is excellent, and the liner-note, although brief, is helpful and informative, although I would have been glad to be told more about the Handel piece. There are also horn parts of startling difficulty in two of Handel's Concerti a Due Cori, and it would have been interesting to know how he managed to find players of this calibre. It is unusual for him to over-tax his English orchestral players, no doubt for sound reasons of experience, and he surely must have felt a high degree of confidence to write in this way for horns.

As usual with Naxos, there are potted biographies of the soloists and the conductor plus a short history of the orchestra. Also as usual, I wish to praise Naxos in the strongest terms for the imagination and flair they dependably display in finding unfamiliar music of high quality, making a superb job of the production of it, and giving it to us at such a modest cost - apart from anything else there is a full hour and a quarter of music here. I make no apology for constantly repeating this sentiment, indeed I only hope I shall still be doing just that for a good few years to come.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful sound........2006-03-24

This CD recalls the reason I had my daughter play the horn in school. The horn is one of the most important and lovliest instruments in an orchestra. Four is that much better.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2006-02-19

This is a great, explosive album. The choice of music is, of course, fantastic, and the execution of them pieces is well done. I highly reccommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Superb on All Counts.......2005-12-23

As a long time horn player and fan of Naxos, this is the perfect recording for those music lovers who don't know the richness of the four-horn literature. It it indeed limited when compared to most other interumental ensembles, such as a string quartet, but this is the best and most accessible recording on the market to introduce neophytes to this sonic wonderland. The playing is exceptional, as the AHQ is a solid, professional, touring outfit, the balances fine, the interpretations solid, and above all FUN. Buy it. Enjoy it. Encourage your friends and children to learn to play the horn, if they dare and want to play like this.

5 out of 5 stars The finest horn album ever.......2005-08-11

No, this album doesn't include any of the superb horn concerti by Wolfgang Mozart. But it does have some incredible works, played wonderfully by Barry Tuckwell.

Over an hour is devoted to the works of Johann Stich (concerti 5, 6, 10, and 11). There are concerti by Franz Joseph Haydn and by Michael Haydn. And by Leopold Mozart. There's a concerto by Telemann. A beautiful sonata for horn and strings by Cherubini. A concerto by Forster. And the piece I consider the masterpiece of the bunch, the Horn Concertino by Carl Weber. Tuckwell is at his best with this work, including the very difficult chords (!) that have to produced by humming one note while playing another.

I highly recommend these two disks.

5 out of 5 stars Andre & Karajan Make Magic.......2003-07-22

At first look, this disc may come as a surprise to you. Herbert von Karajan is not generally regarded as an accompanist, or as a conductor of baroque or classical-period material, yet here he is with trumpeter Maurice Andre in brilliant recordings of Trumpet Concertos by Hummel, L. Mozart, Telemann and Vivaldi. Another thing Karajan is not generally known for is the great recordings he made for EMI (and to a lesser extent Decca), as most associate him exclusively with the Berlin Philharmonic and the DG label. Many of his great EMI recordings have been released recently in the "Karajan Edition" series, but a few, like this title, have now been included as part of the "Great Recordings of the Century" series (though mostly his opera recordings). My only problem with this fine disc is that it is basically a straight reissue (aside from remastering) of the original vinyl LP, which means it only logs in at just over 45 minutes. But my dissatisfaction stems only from the fact that I am greedy, and would love to have had more to savor from this wonderful collaboration between Andre and Karajan.

5 out of 5 stars A Musical Marriage.......2003-11-04

The Barbirolli Society and Dutton Laboratories have reissued yet another brilliant session by the great British conductor Sir John Barbirolli. "Oboe Concertos Volume 2" finds JB with wife Evelyn Rothwell again making beautiful music together. The three Concerto performances by Haydn, Marcello and Corelli (from 1957, 1969 and 1968 respectively) are the highlight of the disc, which also features six chamber pieces. This is music that Barbirolli likely would not have played were it not for Evelyn, but it is a testament to their love that they found the perfect pieces to perform and share together. Like other releases in this series, the recordings have been digitally remastered from the original sources superbly by Michael J. Dutton. Barbirolli Society CDs are certainly a treat, but they don't stay around very long. Buy this JB title while you can!
