Album Description
Music by Phil James for voice, Japanese shakuhachi flute, harmonium, piano, pedal steel guitar, Native American flute, percussion, turntables, and electronics.

Already Gone (six variations) marks Phil James' return to sharing his music publicly after a 15-year hiatus. This album reflects his in-depth study of alternative tunings and of traditional Japanese music as well as an interest in the breath as a primary rhythmic and structural basis for composition. As an exploration of impermanence and as a memorial to those who have died young, each variation uses the audible rising and falling of the breath as an underpinning, but each time in a different way. The work also uses space, especially extreme distance of sound sources, as an important compositional element.

In all of his recent music, the overall feeling of a piece is determined in part by the juxtaposition of several different non-equal temperaments. For instance, the first variation features a drone on harmoniums electronically retuned to two ancient Chinese scales, a pedal steel guitar in just intonation, and a shakuhachi flute playing around an Indonesian slendro scale. Despite this use of world tunings and instrumentation, the often dense polymodal textures are chosen for emotional/musical effect rather than cultural reference.

Album Description

"I have had an opportunity to play with the Beautiful Girls over the last few years and they always connect with a cool, groovin', summertime vibe!" - G LOVE

"They're catchy, familiar, but still refreshing." - THE DRUM MEDIA (Australia)

"With the melodies of Ben Harper and the sheer power of Bob Marley in moments, you can listen to the vocals of Mat McHugh all night." - SNAP (Australia)

We're Already Gone exceeds expectation in instrumentation, performance and songcraft. Keyboards, a brass section, melodica and harp solos move the album forward, and the rhythm section's time spent on the road is evident. It swings!

Like its predecessors, We're Already Gone is a raw album and a collision of styles. It occasionally dips into the same pool of influence as other material from TBG, but that's where the similarities end. The songs, for the most part, are darker - though there are still trademark moments of melodic beauty. Mostly, it is a collision of structure and riff; a mix of art, dub and rock.

5 out of 5 stars BOB MARLEY'S ILLEGITAMATE SONS ROCK REGGAE.......2006-10-20

I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS BAND BEFORE I PICKED UP THE CD. I PICKED UP THIS CD BECAUSE IN ONE REVIEW IT SAID: "THE MELODIES OF BEN HARPER AND THE SHEER POWER OF BOB MARLEY." THE TRUTH IS THAT THEY ARE 100 TIMES BETTER THAN BEN HARPER, AND IF BOB MARLEY WERE ALIVE TODAY, HE WOULD HAVE THIS BAND OPEN UP FOR HIM FOREVER! BOTTOM LINE: THIS IS THE BEST CD I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFE, AND I'VE HEARD OVER 100,000 CD IN MY LIFE - SO FAR. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: 1. PRACTICALLY EVERY SONG IS A FUTURE CLASSIC. 2. THE MUSICIANSHIP IS STUPENDIUS! 3. YOU WILL LOSE ABOUT 5 POUNDS A DAY FROM ALL OF THE UNCONTROLLABLE DANCING YOU WILL BE DOING ONCE YOU PRESS PLAY ON YOUR CD PLAYER. AND FINALLY, IF YOU ARE DEPRESSED IN ANY WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, YOU WILL BE SMILING, HAPPY, AND 100 PERCENT CONTENT AFTER JUST ONE LISTEN TO THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS.

i got this cd after i had "learn yourself" for about a year and i love it ten times more. this cd is not really that alike to their first album and i would reccomend buying this one first if you have never heard them because it kind of touches ground on their different talents within the group moreso than learn yourself which is mainly acoustic.

3 out of 5 stars Good Songs - Only Two of Them.......2006-11-04

I enjoyed the songs, but I didn't realize there were only two songs on the CD. I didn't pay more than just a few dollars, so the value is very good. I guess I just wasn't very clear on the fact it's more like a single. I'll have to read better next time. Overall, I think I still would have purchased the CD even if I did realize it had just the two songs.

    4 out of 5 stars A wonderful re-interpretation of the 1977 classic..........2004-10-22

I never buy CD singles, but I'm glad I bought this one. Thankfully, Wilson Phillips decided not to emulate Fleetwood Mac's 1977 classic...instead, they came up with their own heartfelt, melancholy rendition of "Go Your Own Way". The slower tempo (albeit with a nearly identical running time) works remarkably well and it reveals the more intimate possibilities of this song.

I'd give this five stars if it weren't for the lackluster rendition of "Already Gone". This renditions sounds too much like the original and offers nothing new.

    1 out of 5 stars In a word...Awful!.......2004-07-15

Hardcore Fleetwood Mac fans better stay away from this one! The only good thing I can say about this remake is that it is definitely not anything like the awesome original hit. It was painful listening to these ladies sing this entire, slow, boring, uninvolved song. Sorry Wilson Phillips, I hope there are better songs on your new release to help you get back on the comeback track!

    5 out of 5 stars WENDY.CHYNNA.CARNIE.......2004-07-04

Well this ladies had it goin on again, although many people has stated that they don't understand this version of GO YOUR OWN WAY, I could, This clever ladies, said!, well if were gonna make a acover of Fleetwood Mac, well, to not disrespect the original, let's do a completely different version, and they did, a version were the tracks are slow and with a lot of harmony. For me they have in their hands a really deep version not in a point of comparison with the original, but this is so delightful to hear....it's really heartbreakin', Carnie, Chynna and Wendy are heading to a great album, but with the slow infution RADIO has given to this track, let's hope SONY don't give up on this project and promote a second single cos there's a lot of material in CALIFORNIA, this track it's superb!

3 out of 5 stars Gone Another Way.......2004-06-05

Sometimes, comebacks really don't seem to be all that they are cracked up to be. When I heard that Wilson Phillips was going to reunite, I really was excited. Unfortunately, when I heard the comeback song, it just really didn't get to me. The remake of Fleetwood Mac's legendary hit, Go Your Own Way, is a very much simple version of the song, that seems more like it is stripped down the way Stevie Nicks and company would perform it. This version of the 70's song really doesn't have what I thought of it, to make it a suggestive single. Although Wendy, Carnie & Chyna do have great taste in songs, it is a mixed bag here. Otherwise, try going back to Fleetwood Mac's version, for longtime fans here.

          Album Description

Australian roots rock trio the Beautiful Girls, give fans of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper another reason to be cheerful. The group, fronted by singer/guitarist Mat McHugh, has a charming feel set in motion by the loose, breezy vibe. The Beautiful Girls reveal emotional and artistic depths that seem rare for such a young band. At times the group draws on Sublime's stumbling surf bum vibe which gives desperate lyrics an optimistic reggae thump.

The Beautiful Girls are one of my favorite bands, if not #1. This Cd certainly departs from their acousitc roots, but I enjoyed the change. I also liked how they introduced some horns in this album, like in the first song, "We're already gone." This is the preeminent cd to chill with on the way to the beach. Check out 311, Slightly Stoopid, G-Love and Special Sauce, and OAR for some similar chillish.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Girls Make Beautiful Music.......2006-01-22

I love the Beautiful Girls. Their rootsy blend of folk, rock and reggae is a breath of fresh air in today's music scene. 'We're Already Gone', the Australian group's third album, marks a step in a new direction, as they leave behind most of their acoustic roots for a little harder sound. Those who enjoyed the layed back sounds of 'Learn Yourself' and 'Water' will be surprised to hear a great deal more distortion on this album, as well as more prominent drumlines and even some horns! Some highlights of this new style are the head-bobbin' "...and We'll Dance on the Ashes of What's Left", the Sublime-esque "The Biggest Lie I Ever Told", and "Girl, Lately Things Have Been Changing" -a blatant '60's rock throwback. However the cost of this experimentation may come in the form of the Beautiful Girls playing the genre game alittle bit. For example, it is easier to hear how certain songs fall neatly into the reggae or rock categories on this album than ever before. This isn't so bad, except that on some songs it seems to drown out some of the creative and original vibe that this band has so much of. For those who liked their first two albums, acoustic ditties like "Let's Take the Long Way Home" and "When I Had You With Me" will not disappoint. All in all, this is a solid album and a good listen. Just know that this is not just a new pouring into the same old mold as before, and be ready to see a new side of the Beautiful Girls... one you may not have seen before.

          5 out of 5 stars Great diversity.......2005-09-24

The Beautiful Girls are one of my favorite bands ever. This new release from them adds another dimension to their limited yet incredible music library. Any comparisons to Jack Johnson, who I also enjoy, should be tossed out the window after this release. TBG embarks on a more musically diverse and lyrically dark journey with "We're Already Gone". You will hear much more of the reggae and dub influence. The band jams a bit more and their new harmonica player adds a dimension. You'll get some of the classic acoustic stuff on this as well, but you will be treated to a heavier, more electric sound but with the same groove roots vibe to all of it. Took me a bit to get used to, but feel this is a great record. Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars almost gone - a short review and poem inspired by the album.......2000-08-04

i wanted to say something about this album, and what you read now is my third attempt. the most accurate thing i could say is that it taps into a joy that is beyond description. my desire to tell you more than that is really my desire to hand you this album for you to experience for it yourself.

a few words on the music are in order. as you may know, not everything in this Classical section is truly Classical. some of it has come here simply because there is no catagory that aptly describes it. Already Gone is such a case. a couple of the pieces are mildly reminiscent of "Passion: Music from The Last Temptation of Christ" by Peter Gabriel. But where that album wore a far east flavor, Already Gone quickly slips away into a more universal sound that owes as much to its multi-ethnic instrumentation as to its apparent abstraction of the mundane elements of life.

while i have listened intently to this album many times, i think i like best to play it while i am performing the various tasks of my day. it seems to add a shimmer to the air, and also demands a sort of acceptance - similar to, but not nearly as extreme as the acceptance one needs to successfully listen to "Metal Machine Music" by Lou Reed (one of my favorite albums, by the way). The result, for me, is a vague but very real sense of gratitude that lasts for hours beyond the albums final note.

a poetic interpretation of Already Gone:

the subtle juice of life/ rushing through these fragile veins/ fury and purpose/ crimson lapping/ the mind alive in reverance,/ with direction,/ and a stillness beneath the eternal hum.//

to take time to honor internal soldiers/ that press through the insanity's mounting waves/ with the silence of conviction aflame in the heart/ knowing no futility by which to fall//

steady as the ocean walk the legs of life/ shaping the sands with their plodding footfalls/ applauding all that gets seen or stepped upon/ singing every song to young and old/ with the soft deliberance of wisdom//
